“Only In My Dreams” (1987) is Debbie Gibson’s best song

It’s also her very first single and breakout song, reaching #4 on the Hot 100. It was a BOP. I loved it. Debbie was my girl!! Loved her. Moreso than Tiffany.

I liked her too. Remember when she tried to move into Broadway later?

by Anonymousreply 1September 21, 2023 4:03 PM

She had other songs?

by Anonymousreply 2September 21, 2023 4:06 PM

R2 yup. A handful of hits

by Anonymousreply 3September 21, 2023 4:11 PM

I still have my Electric Youth perfume! It was all the rage back in the day!

by Anonymousreply 4September 21, 2023 4:14 PM

Shake your love, Lost in your eyes. Electric Youth, Out of the Blue, Foolish Beat - she had lots of hits including #1s. But she sort of peaked after three albums.

by Anonymousreply 5September 21, 2023 4:14 PM

I always preferred her debut album to her sophomore one

by Anonymousreply 6September 21, 2023 4:16 PM

This is my favorite of hers as well, OP.

by Anonymousreply 7September 21, 2023 4:16 PM

My top 9 Debbie songs:

1. No More Rhyme

2. Anything Is Possible (PWL Remix)

3. Lost In Your Eyes

4. Out Of The Blue

5. Electric Youth

6. Foolish Beat

7. Shake Your Love

8. Only In My Dreams

9. We Could Be Together

R5 that happens to most teen pop idols. Their shelf lives are usually short lived. Some are able to transition well with the industry’s always changing sounds and to a more mature sound with age but most fall off.

by Anonymousreply 9September 21, 2023 4:18 PM

OP, I went CRAZY for this song when it first came out. I bought the cassette and wore it out. I think I was in 8th grade. It is a perfect pop song. So, so catchy, and so nimbly captures middle-school puppy love angst.

by Anonymousreply 10September 21, 2023 4:23 PM

Her 1995 album “Think With Your Heart” was supposed to be her big comeback, with a more mature sound to cater to the once kids and teens who loved her when she was a teen, who were now older like herself. Sadly it crashed and burned a deadly death. Most people don’t even know that album exists, that’s how bad it did. Sadly too, as I thought it was good.

My mother was one of the handful of people who actually bought it and would play it all the time.

I loved “Didn’t Have The Time”.

No to Deb. Just a big fat no. Not even for camp. Even back then she was teen crap for the vanilla crowd.

by Anonymousreply 12September 21, 2023 5:00 PM

I'll take Debbie Gibson over Cardi B any day. I miss when music was wholesome. Glorifying strippers, drug dealers and gang members is not what I thought we were all moving towards as an evolving culture.

Devo was right.

Wikipedia just reminded me she did Playboy.

by Anonymousreply 15September 21, 2023 5:19 PM

Olivia Newton John and Chrissie Evert had a baby and her name was Deborah

by Anonymousreply 16September 21, 2023 5:27 PM

I miss the days of more wholesome pop too actually. American music is tripping over itself in its rush to amp up the vulgarity. I’m over it.

When it comes to Debbie’s stuff, i never liked her voice that much. I liked her personality, I liked a few of her songs, but overall she was very meh to me.

by Anonymousreply 17September 21, 2023 6:44 PM

Deb wrote possibly the dumbest lyric in the history of popular music (and that's no mean feat): "I just fell, don't kno why" from Lost in Your Eyes. Uh, perhaps you should get an MRI, Deb.

by Anonymousreply 18September 21, 2023 6:53 PM

R18 The ‘fall’ is a metaphor, dear.

by Anonymousreply 19September 21, 2023 7:16 PM

Fell doesn't work as a metaphor if its not followed by a preposition. It just sounds like you have a neuromuscular condition.

by Anonymousreply 20September 22, 2023 6:12 AM

I get down 'tween your thighs

And I feel your penis rise

And brush against my chin

Is it love that I am in?

I am down on my knees

May I suck your penis, please?

And I am a ho

'Cause it's this dick I can't let go

by Anonymousreply 21September 22, 2023 8:51 AM

R18 maybe the song has been about a woman the suffering from a neurogenerative disorder all along Gigi ever think about that? I mean the other lyrics talk about muscle weakness and confusion so clearly that's what she was getting at.

by Anonymousreply 22September 22, 2023 10:34 AM

“Lost In Your Eyes” 2023 version, r21.

by Anonymousreply 23September 22, 2023 10:46 AM

Debbie and Tiffany were both great. Both had some great songs, but between the two, Tiff had the voice. Girl could SANG. Her mature, throaty vocals made Deb's girlish warbling pale by comparison.

Meh. I always liked Deb more.

Taylor Swift is today's Debbie Gibson - completely saccharine and no soul.

by Anonymousreply 26September 22, 2023 11:05 AM

Taylor is too big a star to be compared to anyone from the 80s. Taylor’s career imitates Madonna in size of stardom if we are comparing her to an 80s pop icon.

by Anonymousreply 27September 22, 2023 11:09 AM

Or, of course, MJ. But I was speaking in terms of female pop stars.

by Anonymousreply 28September 22, 2023 11:10 AM

OP is correct. It’s the only DG song I have in my music library. It a perfect pop song.

I had a friend who loved to sing the lyrics to Shake Your Love to

🎶 Fuck that butt, I just can’t fuck..THAT BUTT! 🎶

by Anonymousreply 29September 22, 2023 11:10 AM

[quote]Taylor is too big a star to be compared to anyone from the 80s.

I don't think that was a comparison of the size of her career. In terms of talent and presentation, Taylor is totally today's version of milquetoast Debbie.

by Anonymousreply 30September 22, 2023 11:12 AM

Fallen Angel and Out of the Blue were two other standouts from her first album. The former has exquisite backing vocals and harmonies.

by Anonymousreply 31September 22, 2023 11:19 AM

Tiff was def the superior singer.

by Anonymousreply 32September 22, 2023 11:20 AM

R17 God you’d be awful to know. Too vulgar? You miss the wholesome? Jesus. There’s nothing good about you.

by Anonymousreply 33September 22, 2023 11:24 AM

R32 no one cares. Deb had the bigger hits and two big albums. Bigger voice doesn’t equal better all around.

by Anonymousreply 34September 22, 2023 12:02 PM

Loved that song

by Anonymousreply 35September 22, 2023 12:05 PM

R17 That’s why Taylor Swift is so popular, she’s really the only pop singer that’s wholesome.

She attempted being edgy with the “Reputation” album and it didn’t work so she ran right back to vanilla.

by Anonymousreply 36September 22, 2023 12:11 PM

In what world in TS still wholesome? Her Midnights album is all about sex, including lavender sex which means queer sex.

by Anonymousreply 37September 22, 2023 12:14 PM

Taylor Swift literally cast a trans man as her love interest and made a song with rapper Ice Spice. “Wholesome”.

by Anonymousreply 38September 22, 2023 12:15 PM

r38 Sh "literally" did, huh?

by Anonymousreply 39September 22, 2023 12:18 PM

Despite all of Taylor's attempts at being "edgy," she just doesn't have edge in her. She's completely vanilla, and it makes her attempts at edge come across as forced.

You do, obviously. Tiff's first album was a Billboard 200 #1 and 3 of the singles were Hot 100 top 10s with 2 of them going to #1. Deb's only #1 from her first album was Foolish Beat, and the album peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200.

by Anonymousreply 41September 22, 2023 12:45 PM

Gerg! Gergie-gergo-Gerg… gergie-gergie-gerrrrrrg, gergo-gergie-Gerg!

by Anonymousreply 42September 22, 2023 1:30 PM

[quote][R17] That’s why Taylor Swift is so popular, she’s really the only pop singer that’s wholesome. She attempted being edgy with the “Reputation” album and it didn’t work so she ran right back to vanilla.

You mean wholesome on Cruel Summer where she sings about being drunk in the back of a car? Or No Body No Crime where she kills a man she suspects of killing her friend's husband and framing the mistress? Or of course Blank Space where she plays up to the media role of a tragic man hungry crazy woman.

Taylor Swift isn't a natural dancer but she's a singer songwriter musician who is so far ahead of her peers it's unfair.

by Anonymousreply 43September 22, 2023 1:47 PM

R43 exactly. She was once wholesome but she hasn’t sang songs that were wholesome in years. Not being able to dance has nothing to do with wholesomeness.

by Anonymousreply 44September 22, 2023 1:49 PM

I have to admit that the Bad Blood video and song made me think less of her. So much so I deleted it from 1989 on my phone.

It felt like mean girl bullying. But she made amends to Katy on You Need To Calm Down.

by Anonymousreply 45September 22, 2023 1:52 PM

I like that she gave a shout out to Janet in "Snow on the Beach."

by Anonymousreply 46September 22, 2023 2:30 PM

Terrible, shitty, awful song from a terrible, shitty, unoriginal singer.

by Anonymousreply 47September 22, 2023 2:42 PM

[quote]R17] God you’d be awful to know. Too vulgar? You miss the wholesome? Jesus. There’s nothing good about you.

I’m crushed you would say that Anonymous.

by Anonymousreply 48September 22, 2023 4:42 PM

Didn't Tiffany also flash beav, though she might have done it in a more downmarket rag like Muff Parade

by Anonymousreply 49September 22, 2023 4:49 PM

Tiff and Deb did Playboy.

by Anonymousreply 50September 22, 2023 6:41 PM

Debbie and Tiffany fall down like toy soldiers

by Anonymousreply 51September 22, 2023 8:07 PM

Nobody asked you Martika.

by Anonymousreply 52September 22, 2023 9:17 PM

A few people here are VERY passionate about this light topic

by Anonymousreply 53September 22, 2023 9:28 PM

Tiffany had the better voice... on record. I have seen old vids of her singing live during her biggest years in the late 80s, though, and it was a different story. Really bad. But I agree, Debbie's voice wasn't remarkable, nor was her presentation. She was sort of similar to Kylie Minogue in the early years, but Kylie had a certain something more and, when she broke out of the confines of her original, teeny-bopper image, people accepted it, whereas Debbie sort of disappeared after trying the same.

by Anonymousreply 54September 22, 2023 9:39 PM

Kylie barely had a career in the states. Outside of a handful of songs.

by Anonymousreply 55September 22, 2023 9:42 PM

Debbie was all sweetness and light. She never had a song like Tiffany's "Spanish Eyes," which lyrically describes a young girl losing her virginity to her leather-wearing Latino boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 59September 23, 2023 2:18 PM

r58 You're "sorry?" How odd.

by Anonymousreply 60September 23, 2023 3:04 PM

Tiffany’s music wasn’t as good, honestly.

by Anonymousreply 61October 2, 2023 9:13 PM

Tiff was the better vocalist. “Danny” from her first album is superior to anything on Deb’s first.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62October 2, 2023 9:16 PM

R62 nah. Better vocalist doesn’t equal better overall. Also her vocals were good in a studio. Never very good live. At least Debbie sounded the same live.

by Anonymousreply 63October 2, 2023 9:19 PM

she was uniformly terrible and had NO best song

by Anonymousreply 64October 2, 2023 9:21 PM

Feelings of Forever, also from her first album, bested anything from Deb’s debut.

I’m intrigued about her sexual orientation, though.

She has always pinged.

by Anonymousreply 66October 2, 2023 9:53 PM

Didn’t Debbie date Freddie Jackson at one time?

by Anonymousreply 67October 2, 2023 9:59 PM

I’ll always respect Debbie Gibson for writing songs, composing music and her sense for music production.

by Anonymousreply 68October 2, 2023 10:08 PM

R13 would probably rather glorify a guy who laughs about grabbing women by the pussy

by Anonymousreply 69October 2, 2023 10:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 70October 2, 2023 10:29 PM

I love Deb. Always have.

R1, she did quite well in theater and on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 71October 3, 2023 1:31 AM

I don't see Tiffany doing bumpers for rewind TV like Debbie does so yeah.

by Anonymousreply 72October 3, 2023 7:13 AM

Debbie and Belinda did some tv show together this week

by Anonymousreply 73October 3, 2023 7:23 AM

She was such a fun popstar when she came out. Loved her! Tiffany sucked.

by Anonymousreply 74December 6, 2023 11:27 PM

Tiffany was just boring.

by Anonymousreply 75December 6, 2023 11:57 PM

Oh man, this takes me back. Thank you OP

by Anonymousreply 76December 7, 2023 12:28 AM

Tiffany was really tacky. I mean even for the 80’s she was tacky.

by Anonymousreply 77December 7, 2023 2:30 AM

Debbie is sort of overdue for a comeback. I mean, look at NKOTB, for fucks sake. Those talentless dorks had that huge tour recently. I think Debbie's challenge is she doesn't seem to let others write and produce her and, for me, she has an annoying vocal thing she does and needs to stop. It seems all her songs feature, in either the main vocal or the backing, this ear-piercing high note, where she'll sing a line in this grating high pitch and it sounds nasal and I just want to smack her til she's unconscious. But, other than that, her music can be delightful.

by Anonymousreply 78December 7, 2023 4:07 AM

This came out last year and started getting airplay this summer for some reason but then faded.
