I don't understand a few things about the refugee thing happening now:
1. Why so many? Why now?
2. Why are people so insane with rage that they're being housed a few miles from them. Not next door - miles.
I don't get either thing.

They are generally the wrong color, that's the biggest problem.
I remember a friend of our family, he was German with a PhD. Rich, kind, all of that stuff.
The only tiny problem was that he had been a WWII/SS officer (doing very naughty stuff) and wasn't supposed to be in the country, oops. Never heard any bitching about him though.

Martha's Vineyard didn't stage riots when refugees arrived. In Staten Island they did. Sorry bitch.

Google “rapefugee”, there’s also a few propaganda documentaries that exploded online around 2016 trying to portray refugees as essentially an invading army that would tear white society to shreds - one of them was called the fire rises or something like that (symbolic fascist dogwhistling), probably couldn’t find any of it now but the far right was pushing stuff like that all over Facebook and YouTube and Vimeo and anywhere they could and got a lot of attention.

Op you are a fool and an idiot.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 20, 2023 4:23 PM |
Because right-wingers think refugees/immigrants are getting lots of government goodies and “handouts” that should be going to them instead. Also, there’s the white supremacy/nativism—a terrible American tradition!

by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 20, 2023 4:32 PM |
Meanwhile, with unemployment at a 50 year low, they're so desperate for workers that they're having to change the labor laws to let their teenage kids work. Immigrants would gladly fill those positions, and they'd work harder too. But no, those people are brown and speak a different language so it's out of the question.

[quote] How many refugees have you taken in, OP? I'll wait.
I didn't realize helping refugees could ONLY mean taking them into your own house. I'm sure that's what the fearmongerers would like us all to think.
For the last decade I've donated time, money and furniture via our church to settle refugees in housing. The total number of families in that time? 30 or so, which on average consisted of 3 to 4 people in each family, so somewhere between 90 and 120 people. That's how many I've helped.
How many hours have you spent, R12? How many dollars did you spend? Does your church claim to be representing Christ in any way? Go ahead, R12. I'll wait.

It's about racism. It's about "others." and the Republicans love it as an issue. We have had many occasions on which good legislation was offered, including by Republican Presidents and the Republican Congress voted against it every time. They have no interest in solving the immigration problem.. As with other "issues" they exploit, there is no interest in solving problems, just in using they to sow fear and division. And just like the sheeple they are, American people get all scared and upset. Immigrants are criminals, rapists and dopers. And sometimes they are BLACK!

Right-wing politicians aren't terrified. They are cynical enough to use right-wing inclinations toward racism to create fear, terror, so that voters will act on that fear and vote Republican. Refugees actually mean cheap labor which one would think so-called job creators would want, especially in an era of rising union support. People desperate enough for jobs will work as scabs.

Let's be thoughtful for a minute. Do you remember when Castro sent a few boatloads of Cuban "refugees" to Jimmy Carter? He emptied his prisons to do it. It made a mess for Carter. OK. Fast forward to Arab Spring. Maybe even before, including political unrest in Africa. Putin and his Wagner group were behind it. But the end result was Europe being flooded with immigrants from Muslim countries and from Africa. Thousands.. Hillary was SoS. Putin hated her, so it was especially sweet to him to create all this chaos with the immigrants. We also have the "Evangelicals" organizing caravans of immigrants from South and Central America. We have Haitian refugees, and we have pot stirring here. And every single attempt to deal with the crisis has been met with rejection from the "Republicans" in Congress. This issue has been a productive live wire issue for the Republicans for years. Going back to at least 1980. Do you think the refugees just found boats or other means to travel on their own? No. they paid. And the Russians helped organize it. The guy from the Wagner group who died in that "plane crash could verify a lot of this. Putin has been on a mission to weaken us and disband NATO so he can expand and restore Russia to what it was in the 60's. He and his oligarch have built their fortunes on controlling fossil fuel and minerals and other resources. He has always been about expanding so he could gain control of natural resources. It's why he went into Afghanistan and got humiliated by Carter. We need to remember our history. Read Blow Put by Dr. Rachel Maddow. Read Masha Gessen and Sarah Kenzior. or Craig Unger. They finally had a bona fide Russian asset in the WH with Trump. But he wasn't the only card . They have a lot of other cards in their hand and some of the fools aren't even aware they are being played.

getting the Covid shots for their jobs & are furious that the illegals can come across the border & get jobs with no jab.
A couple relatives (who voted for Obama) won't vote dem again based solely on this issue.

Tucker Carlson's "replacement theory" was that Democrats want to bring in refugees/immigrants so they will eventually become voters (for the Democrats).
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 21, 2023 9:14 PM |
It is definitely about Race. Our adversaries out there, (Putin especially) know that race is the Achilles Heel for America and they exploit it with ease. Division is an important strategy. Get people fighting against one another. Jews? Gays? Immigrants? Blacks? Go for it. There's only one time in recent memory that racism backfired on the racists. Black people were under prescribed for pain medication. So the opioid crisis is mostly white people. LOL!

My grandfather was raised when Italians, Irish, Eastern European Jewish, Chinese, Catholic people came to our country in large numbers. They were hated by everyone here. The ethnicities formed gangs to protect themselves.
It's rich when DeSantis makes such a big deal about people wanting to come to this country. All eight of his great-grandparents were born in Sicily. Allegedly, some of them came to America illegally.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 22, 2023 4:30 PM |
Some right-wing site was recently bitching about the fact that a lot of the people entering the country are doing so to escape their countries military conscriptions.
Well, no shit people.
A HUGE number of Prussian/Eastern European immigrants as long as 150 years ago were leaving for that exact same reason, it hasn't changed one bit.

Could someone else explain what these books are that supposed "liberals" are reading to grade school kids about blowjobs? They are really hysterical about porn being read to kiddies and I find that hard to swallow.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 22, 2023 6:51 PM |
Influxes of immigrants hurt black Americans more than white Americans because a disproportionate number of black Americans are in jobs where wages are depressed by immigrants willing to work for less than a (decent) living wage. It’s not racist to be infuriated by this.
But go ahead and keep ordering door dash to be delivered by some poor slob who doesn’t have medical insurance or auto insurance and is racing around like a maniac. And god forbid you should clean your own house or mow your own lawn. The important thing is that you aren’t racist and people who feel differently are. Because you say so.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 22, 2023 7:35 PM |
CNN has recently joined the outcry. The other day they were talking about the “crisis” and the surge of South Americans who are coming. Sounded a lot like the Faux News imaginary “caravans” that seem to pop up before every election.
I’ve always heard that most illegal people in the US are people who came in with legal Visas and didn’t leave when they expired. Most of them came by airplane, not sneaking across a border.
It’s just startling when a large number arrive all at once, like in Texas or the busses to New York. Congress definitely needs to address the problems, but immigrants & refugees are not automatically a bad thing.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 23, 2023 5:07 PM |
R36, your argument is transparent and false. Deporting every immigrant will not erase the country’s history of racism and caste systems. Neither will putting black Americans against migrants and Latinos.
While you may enjoy judging people who use food delivery or hire people to for house or yard work, those activities create economic activity and growth. That helps people feed their families. Your resentment of liberals with money does not.

The whole immigrants are rapists! thing is a Republican strategy. To scare. They have had dozens of opportunities to fix it. Even rejected legislation that came about through Republican PResidents. It is more powerful to use it as an issue than to find a solution. Right Wingers are scum.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 23, 2023 6:10 PM |
R36 nailed it. The wealthy have always favored immigration because it provided lots of cheap labor. Illegal immigrants are even better because they can be paid below minimum wage to do all the dirty work. It’s the working class traditionally who opposes immigration. . But legal immigration and what’s going on at the border are two different things. Countries have the right to determine who can enter their borders. Lots of Hispanics agree with the Republicans on this so calling people racist who are concerned is just another dead end.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 23, 2023 6:13 PM |
The Western countries cannot be expected to take in all of the world's people who live in corrupt, war-torn, or nonfunctioning countries. Nothing will get better in those places if we continue to do that.
Whenever immigration is discussed, there's all of these macro-economic factors that are trotted out to say it's a net benefit for an economy. Ok. BUT, when the economic gains of the last 30 years has been slanted toward the upper 10% or 1%, then it's not an increase that is enjoyed by all.
People are on the edge economically across the middle and lower classes with the costs of EVERYTHING.
Let me also add - we have a MAJOR HOUSING SHORTAGE here and in most countries. And we're not building at a fast enough pace to even keep up - it keeps getting worse.
Realistically, where the FUCK are these people supposed to live? And it drives up prices/demand for housing for regular people.
I'm pissed off at letting in tens or hundreds of thousands of people WITHOUT any plans of where to house them or direct jobs to funnel them to.
No country is building enough housing for this. And we can't be the release valve to take in the unfortunates from every country around the world.
