Who was in the right?

Oh my god. I read the article but you really don’t need to in order to know who was wrong. Tased a band director for not stopping his high school band??

That is an outrageous abuse of force.

by Anonymousreply 1September 19, 2023 8:23 PM

Sad. Band kids are usually the good students. For them to see their band leader treated like that ... It's like the cops wanted to purposely embarrass him. Why? I could kind of understand if it was something to do with a noise code / law, but it apparently wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 2September 19, 2023 8:25 PM

What in the hell? Wow.

by Anonymousreply 3September 19, 2023 8:28 PM

[quote]According to both Mims and the Birmingham Police Department, officers asked Mims to stop the performance so they could clear out the stadium. Mims responded that the song was about to end and the performance was agreed on by both schools.

Wait. So, there wasn't an issue, they just wanted to clear the stadium since the game was over? They couldn't wait one minute for the performance to end, so they tased the band director?

What is wrong with people - and with regard to police it appears I must start using the term "people" loosely these days.

by Anonymousreply 4September 19, 2023 8:30 PM

The donut shop must have been closing soon and they were in a hurry.

by Anonymousreply 5September 19, 2023 8:39 PM

Be glad they didn't shoot and kill him.

Jesus H. Christ, can't you take a few seconds to proofread a thread title before you post it?

by Anonymousreply 7September 19, 2023 8:48 PM

Back when I was a student l I would have cheered anybody who used a taser to silence the high school band.

by Anonymousreply 8September 19, 2023 8:52 PM

Aww ... I liked hearing our HS band play at games. We had a pretty good band.

by Anonymousreply 9September 19, 2023 9:00 PM

I was in the marching band for four years and it was customary to play a song - or several - as the stands were clearing out: it gives the fans something to listen to as they go to their cars, and it loosens up the traffic so when the band kids are loaded onto the bus, they can head back to the school without waiting for an hour to get out of the parking lot.

by Anonymousreply 10September 19, 2023 9:04 PM

Just put sniper towers in all the schools and if you break a rule three times, lights out!

by Anonymousreply 11September 19, 2023 9:06 PM

R4 the goal of nearly every cop is to be involved in and inflict as much violence as possible on any given day, they're looking for ANY reason to do it and get away with it. In this day and age only the lowest of the lowest brute would even consider applying for such a position.

by Anonymousreply 12September 19, 2023 9:08 PM

Jfc. Roided out cops doing juicehead shit

by Anonymousreply 13September 19, 2023 9:11 PM

Unbelievable. Add this to the ten zillion other examples of unnecessary police violence against black citizens caught on camera. It’s truly like they think their chosen profession gives them to right to act like the Gestapo.

by Anonymousreply 14September 19, 2023 9:18 PM

Remember when tasers were sold to the public as a gun substitute? Now they'll tase you for any little thing.

by Anonymousreply 15September 19, 2023 9:21 PM

I think people fundamentally or intentionally misunderstand the call to “defund the police”. It doesn’t mean we don’t want police. We want police. We just don’t want them militarized. We don’t want them having military weapons (which I realize a taser isn’t) or using military tactics to solve small issues like this.

The military’s job is to go to war and kill. Police are supposed to protect and serve. Not harm and kill (which happens all too frequently).

by Anonymousreply 16September 19, 2023 9:23 PM

Tasing is for violent threats, not uppity Black men. Jesus christ I am so sick of these cops.

by Anonymousreply 17September 19, 2023 9:24 PM

R17 Can I assume you are using the term “uppity” ironically? If not, perhaps you forgot to sign your post Dee Plorable?

by Anonymousreply 18September 19, 2023 9:35 PM

The police are evil. Because no one is a cop today who isn't a shit.

by Anonymousreply 19September 19, 2023 9:39 PM

Fucking awful cops. They couldn't have figured out a way better to handle this situation? No, they just had to show authority and put fear into everyone.

by Anonymousreply 20September 19, 2023 9:47 PM

R18, you are an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 21September 19, 2023 10:00 PM

R7 Alabaster bundt detector tsked-tsked by head lice for not schlepping sooner at sky high gays

by Anonymousreply 22September 19, 2023 10:06 PM

He reeks Nation Of Islam.

by Anonymousreply 23September 19, 2023 10:15 PM

The cops became an official gang when Castle Rock vs Gonzalez went through the courts. No requirement to protect or serve.

Also legal immunity makes the cops utterly lawless

Plus, we’ve got a bunch of brainwashed right wingers in this country. They are just world theorists and think everybody gets what they deserve when they didn’t actually do any crimes at all. They can just slap convictions on to people and all the right wingers in society agree with it, even if it is wrong.

Put those factors together and you get fascist bullies

As a teacher, I have to admit I kind of like this idea!

"Uppity"? Would you use that word to describe a white man?

by Anonymousreply 27September 19, 2023 10:24 PM

I'm pretty sure the user of "uppity" is being sarcastic.

by Anonymousreply 28September 19, 2023 10:30 PM

R23 he's wearing a tux and said he was a Christian and called to forgive. You reek of your dog's raped asshole

by Anonymousreply 29September 19, 2023 10:31 PM

R7. Years ago we had a PREVIEW feature that let us fix mistakes. DL should bring it back.

by Anonymousreply 30September 19, 2023 10:32 PM

F&F R23.

by Anonymousreply 31September 19, 2023 10:45 PM

This video pissed me off. I was in band for 4 years, my senior year I was the drum major. That band director did NOT deserve that. The cops were acting like complete fools. Let the band finish then tell them to go. The director even said he knew they were leaving soon. I'm surprised none of those students went after those cops.

by Anonymousreply 32September 19, 2023 10:47 PM

So much for the cops deescalating the situation.

Why did they arrest him when he DID stop not too long after he was told? Is it because he didn’t stop sooner?

by Anonymousreply 33September 19, 2023 11:04 PM

I hope he gets a lawyer and sues that Police Department for a Zillion Dollars- he's got an entire Stadium full of witnesses.

by Anonymousreply 34September 19, 2023 11:19 PM

Why were the police used to stop the band performance? No one from the school can communicate to the band leader?

by Anonymousreply 35September 20, 2023 2:27 AM

[quote] So much for the cops deescalating the situation.

It's Alabama. Those cops likely didn't even know how to spell "deescalating", much less know how to do it.

by Anonymousreply 36September 20, 2023 12:57 PM

Conducting while black.

by Anonymousreply 37September 20, 2023 1:23 PM

Listen to his explanation; it just seems ridiculous. Police weren't trying to stop his halftime performance - the game was over and the lights were turned off. The home team director complied and had his band stop playing, but he didn't. Although he didn't deserve to be tased, there is no reason on earth that he couldn't have cut off the band. His whole rationale is silly; he seems like an egomaniac.

Great retort, R39. Give your reasons for your opinion or eat shit.

by Anonymousreply 40September 21, 2023 12:52 AM

ACAB

by Anonymousreply 41September 21, 2023 1:38 AM

I’m surprised this case hasn’t gotten bigger national representation.

by Anonymousreply 42September 21, 2023 3:43 PM

Backstory - this is a “battle of the bands” type of thing that happens at some games which has led to altercations, so some of the school districts have banned music after the game and made a rule that the stadium/field has to be cleared by security and lights turned out.

The band leader knew this district had this rule in place. He was told to stop or they’d arrest him and he said, “Yeah, cool.”

So….it’s a case of the “victim” escalating as well as the police escalating. If a school district feels there’s enough of a problem that they come up with a solution to the problem, you gotta go by their rules. You can’t just exempt yourself. It’s not a good example to the band kids.

by Anonymousreply 43September 21, 2023 6:12 PM

I think both sides carry some fault, but the police obviously overreacted.

by Anonymousreply 44September 21, 2023 11:17 PM

A lot of people say America isn't racist.

by Anonymousreply 45September 21, 2023 11:56 PM

The cops are black, R45. But thanks for playing, Trolly McRussianTroll

by Anonymousreply 46September 22, 2023 12:59 AM

STFU R46. Americans criticize cops too. The institution is corrupt. That includes non-white cops,
