Elon Musk says X (Twitter) will charge everyone to use the platform

Elon Musk said Monday he's moving to require all users to pay a monthly fee to use his social media site X, previously called Twitter.

Musk said: "The single-most important reason we're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system is it's the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots."

Musk said adding a subscription would make it much more difficult for bots to create accounts, because each bot would need to register a new credit card.

He added that the company plans to come out with "a lower tier pricing," than what it currently charges for its X Premium subscribers, which is around $8 monthly.

Will you pay or leave?

by Anonymousreply 116September 27, 2023 3:20 AM

I like Twitter, but I will leave the platform. I am not paying Elon Musk anything.

by Anonymousreply 1September 19, 2023 7:55 PM

I will not pay for Twitter.

Also, this should have been a poll.

by Anonymousreply 2September 19, 2023 8:04 PM

Text is better. That way each poster can creatively vent re: their disdain for Musk.

by Anonymousreply 3September 19, 2023 8:05 PM

If you remove Musk from the equation, it seems reasonable. Will I pay? No. I'm not into Twitter, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 4September 19, 2023 8:15 PM

I left almost a year ago. No way would I pay for this shitshow now.

by Anonymousreply 5September 19, 2023 8:16 PM

Damn. I'm still on strictly for the porn, but no way in hell am I going to pay. Bummer.

by Anonymousreply 6September 19, 2023 8:19 PM

Where's the next best place for ongoing short porn shares?

by Anonymousreply 7September 19, 2023 8:19 PM

I can’t imagine giving that creep a credit card number.

by Anonymousreply 8September 19, 2023 8:21 PM

He said that to Bibi on the spur of the moment, but I really hope he goes through with it as it would kill Twitter for good.

And no, I'm not paying to be able to post on a Nazi platform, don't make me fucking laugh.

by Anonymousreply 9September 19, 2023 8:35 PM

[quote] Where's the next best place for ongoing short porn shares?

I think Tumblr has picked up that tap again.

by Anonymousreply 10September 19, 2023 8:50 PM

It may be another stepping stone to his everything-app that he has been talking about for so long. Credit card information on file would enable a lot of services in one single app. I hope it's not one of his empty promises. Charge the hell out of it. Please! Let's cut the user base by 90%.

by Anonymousreply 11September 19, 2023 8:53 PM

I wouldn't pay for the Twitter service that used to exist before Musk took over, never mind the current shell he's riding downward like Slim Pickens on the bomb in Dr. Strangelove.

by Anonymousreply 12September 19, 2023 8:59 PM

I think this is good news though - maybe it will push people to find a proper alternative.

by Anonymousreply 13September 19, 2023 9:03 PM

So glad I never wasted a minute of my life in that shithole.

by Anonymousreply 14September 19, 2023 9:10 PM

Anyone who pays is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 15September 19, 2023 9:15 PM

Lmao this will sink it

by Anonymousreply 16September 19, 2023 9:20 PM

If Twitter starts charging, I doubt if Meta and its tentacles will be far behind.

by Anonymousreply 17September 19, 2023 9:44 PM

I've already left.

by Anonymousreply 18September 19, 2023 9:47 PM

I pay for some stupid, useless shit I'll admit (Netflix for example because I rarely watch it) but my conscience will NOT allow me to pay for that X nonsense. It's always been a toxic place and with Musk pulling the strings now? Hard fucking pass.

by Anonymousreply 19September 19, 2023 10:02 PM

It was fun (kind of) while it lasted.

Ciao, X

by Anonymousreply 20September 19, 2023 10:02 PM

Credit card numbers are a substitute for a real-ID and I'm fine with it. The armies of scammers and bots on social media is unhealthy. I used to be totally against such measures, but this was before you could buy followers and likes, before the massive influx of Russian trolls and before the Indian subcontinent became a harbour for professional scammers. Make it very affordable, but demand a credit card number to associate a tweet with a person who will be banned or held liable.

by Anonymousreply 21September 19, 2023 10:14 PM

They don’t seem to be doing anything to try to control the spam.

by Anonymousreply 22September 19, 2023 10:17 PM

I'll miss the porn and only the porn. Well good luck Zuckerberg. Guess Threads is getting another chance.

by Anonymousreply 23September 19, 2023 10:17 PM

I'm sure your credit card information will be very safe in Elon's hands! Protecting private information is so important to him.

by Anonymousreply 24September 19, 2023 10:26 PM

What he really means is his bonehead moves have cost him to lose too much ad revenue, so he needs to make it up somehow.

by Anonymousreply 25September 19, 2023 10:28 PM

Byeeee

by Anonymousreply 26September 19, 2023 10:31 PM

This would be the final straw for Twitter and would kill it.

by Anonymousreply 27September 19, 2023 10:35 PM

I've never had Twatter and never wanted it, I'm certainly not going to pay for it. Is it giving me a blowjob? No?

Then fuck off, Elmo.

by Anonymousreply 28September 19, 2023 10:36 PM

“Did everyone hear that I never had it in the first place? May I please get some kudos? I need to virtue signal!”

by Anonymousreply 29September 19, 2023 10:45 PM

I just want a free site where I can watch sluts show off hole and pole, and see them fuck random strangers. I wish xtube was resurrected, it was the best, now everything has to be monetized.

by Anonymousreply 30September 19, 2023 11:24 PM

Yeah, I only use it to look at naked pics of my Facebook friends. I'll save the pics they've already posted and delete the app.

by Anonymousreply 31September 19, 2023 11:52 PM

He does understand that charging for subscriptions means even fewer advertisers, right?

by Anonymousreply 32September 20, 2023 12:03 AM

[quote]He does understand that charging for subscriptions means even fewer advertisers, right?

this is why I have doubts it will actually happen. A lot of people just casually drop in on twitter and won't want to pay. If he's serious about the bots thing, maybe something like what Paypal used to do - linking the credit card but only charging a tiny amount but even so, I can see a lot of people not trusting that or not wanting to go through the hassle.

by Anonymousreply 33September 20, 2023 12:11 AM

Elon Musk has a brilliant business mind!

by Anonymousreply 34September 20, 2023 12:13 AM

Elon...just sell Twitter. You suck.

by Anonymousreply 35September 20, 2023 1:09 AM

Musk purchased Twitter to destroy it R35. He's doing exactly what he set out to do and will leave just a smoking hole in the ground and write it off as a tax loss.

by Anonymousreply 36September 20, 2023 1:12 AM

Elmo is such a huge fucking moron. He couldn't even steer clear of a psycho like Amber Heard.

by Anonymousreply 37September 20, 2023 1:20 AM

I posted this in the thread about the sudden death of Temple University’s acting president—ghoul that I am, I went there to see if there was video and the first bunch of tweets that popped up all implied she died of being vaxxed. What a shithole Twitter is.

by Anonymousreply 38September 20, 2023 1:37 AM

What a stupid fucking bitch.

by Anonymousreply 39September 20, 2023 1:38 AM

Yeah, fuck that. DL is the only platform I'm willing to pay for. Twitter is already on a downward spiral and that will be the last nail in its coffin.

by Anonymousreply 40September 20, 2023 1:43 AM

Bye, cunt!

California will come up with a newer, better social media platform soon.

by Anonymousreply 41September 20, 2023 1:45 AM

Just call it Twitter-X if you have throw the X in there.

by Anonymousreply 42September 20, 2023 1:50 AM

I like looking at other people’s tweets on the Google home page during NFL games. I hope those fans pay up and keep tweeting. If they don’t, I don’t think I’ll know what’s happening as it’s happening at all because all the services I’ve looked at (Fubo, NFL+, Paramount+, YouTube TV) are asking more money than it’s worth to me and I’m not going to go sit in a sports bar.

Damn shame. Go, Chiefs.

by Anonymousreply 43September 20, 2023 1:55 AM

"Musk said adding a subscription would make it much more difficult for bots to create accounts, because each bot would need to register a new credit card."

Really? A new credit card for each bot? Does that imply you cant use the same credit card on more than one account because it serves as some sort of unique identity verification? Is he planning to go the Facebook route where they discourage people from making multiple accounts and especially since the election meddling crap started requiring legal names? I knew a lot of drag queens that had just been using their regular Facebook profile as their business account for years with their drag name, because they'd been around since Business Pages etc had been a thing

If he's gonna start requiring some kind of minimal fee basically just to verify the credit card and link an account to a human identity, he should continue that logic and allow one verified paying human to have as many accounts linked to that as they want. So much of twitter culture and function depends on people being able to make a side account to focus on certain hobbies or groups or just for a specific joke or whatever! If suddenly each new @account costs its own monthly subscription the whole thing falls apart. For example I have my main twitter, my private twitter to talk shit, a dirty art account, a private porn account for my own collections, a shared private porn account with an ex where we still retweet shit we think is hot to flirt (we moved to twitter after tumblr killed adult content), and then like 5 other random handles I have parked or empty portfolio/brand accounts waiting to be fleshed out. That doesnt include the dozen or so twitter accounts for various work clients and projects. Our company has never hesitated to just make a new account to test things or curate content or interact in different ways, experimentation was free.

And ok so its still public, its still something that can be linked to and referenced in blog posts? The non paying members of the public can look but not speak if they cant or wont pay? Ugh this whole thing is falling apart so rapidly and completely there's hardly a point in picking apart the obvious. I keep thinking Im over it but every time a show, movie, book or podcast casually mentions Twitter as an established understood thing I feel that hollow thump of anger

by Anonymousreply 44September 20, 2023 1:55 AM

This is how Datalounge (1995--##) outlasts Twitter (2006-2023) in longevity!

Datalounge is the Cher of websites.

by Anonymousreply 45September 20, 2023 2:02 AM

Why would anyone want to do Twitter or what ever that sociopath calls it? Aid and abet another Putin flunky as he opposes American foreign policy? Or how about his buddy buddy BiBi?

Is tweeting really that necessary to life and work? Rhetorical question because it is not at all. For the most part you do not need a social media brand to be successful at anything except perhaps being an “influencer” which is one the biggest piles of short term bullshit in the modern world.

by Anonymousreply 46September 20, 2023 2:02 AM

He’s charging a nominal fee based on the DL model

by Anonymousreply 47September 20, 2023 2:05 AM

Oh that's great, R47, he already ignores the Nazis, white supremacists, political propagandists, Trans Haters, Russian bots and assorted other undesirables.

by Anonymousreply 48September 20, 2023 2:16 AM

He's a whiny little Boer cunt.

by Anonymousreply 49September 20, 2023 2:39 AM

[quote] Elon Musk said Monday he's moving to require all users to pay a monthly fee to use his social media site X

Much like datalounge

by Anonymousreply 50September 20, 2023 2:39 AM

What an asshole!

Ain't nobody gonna pay for Twitter! Musk will succeed in setting fire to 40 billion bucks faster than anyone in the universe! What a genius, huh?

by Anonymousreply 51September 20, 2023 3:08 AM

I can't wait until this jackass bankrupts himself.

by Anonymousreply 52September 20, 2023 3:16 AM

never, not once

by Anonymousreply 53September 20, 2023 3:16 AM

Datalounge is like the single-celled organism of the internet. It'll be here long after the comet wipes out the internet mammals and dinosaurs like twitter.

And it'll be filled with a bunch of us DL Marys, still talking about Joan Crawford, 70s tv shows, and which mayonnaise is the best.

by Anonymousreply 54September 20, 2023 3:27 AM

Buh-bye, Elon. It’s been weird to know you.

by Anonymousreply 55September 20, 2023 3:28 AM

R54, thou shalt have no other mayo but Duke's, blasphemer.

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2023 3:29 AM

This will definitely be the end of some communities lol

by Anonymousreply 57September 20, 2023 3:49 AM

Why don't we ever hear from Linda Yaccarino?

by Anonymousreply 58September 20, 2023 3:54 AM

I've said this before ,but I think the whole plan all along was to bring Twitter down-the #1 free source of real time news 🗞️ worldwide. They claim he was 'forced' to buy Twitter -for for 40 billion -which is a drop in the bucket 🪣 for the world's richest man. 😞 I'm sure that he will be reimbursed by his fellow demented and rich cronies if the goal is to destroy the platform. What was the point of 'rebranding' it 'X' after it's original name has entered the lexicon as a verb? What does it even mean? 😭 Why not just pick any letter of the alphabet? It clearly has a very dark 🌑 and Orwellian meaning to this person. 👿

Whatever Twitter has become,no one can argue that it has brought important stories and protests from around the world 🌎 center stage that would otherwise be hidden in tne shadows. These 👿 really think they can control everyone's voice and opinions. But that's the good thing about advancing technology -its ever growing and ever changing to adapt to the needs of the times . I've always thought that the advent photography helped to end slavery, because now there was visual proof 😞 at the atrocities committed during that 'peculiar institution'. 'They' want to keep silencing the voices of dissent -and what better way to do that than to destroy Twitter? Now they want to charge you for expressing your opinions -and they know the majority of the oppressed don't have to money 💰 to pay. Twitter was a major avenue for lesser voices without a platform to be heard and they are trying to stamp that out.

Let them have Twitter -or whatever he wants to call it -something new and better will come along -one person -or a group of his like minded rich cohorts - can't silence the voices of the majority.

by Anonymousreply 59September 20, 2023 4:21 AM

Okay, R59, back away from the emoji key. WTF?

So this is a vast conspiracy againt Twatter? Really? Because it looks to me as though Elmo Musk is nothing but a grifting, psycho loser whose businesses are all fucked up. Twatter is fucked. SpaceX is fucked. Tesla is really fucked and is now just a series of crippling lawsuits waiting to kick off. He's in bed with Putin for fuck's sake. He's a serious hardcore drug addict without the wit to evade an obvious gold-digging whore like Amber Heard.

On what planet is Elmo a Bond villain? (Well, I suppose since they all fucked up and were killed - maybe that's a bad comparison.) All of Vladimir's friends die, some in very strange and mysterious ways. Elmo should watch his step.

by Anonymousreply 60September 20, 2023 4:34 AM

This cunt deserves to be ripped limb-by-limb in a Soweto marketplace.

by Anonymousreply 61September 20, 2023 4:42 AM

that thing we all lived without 15 or so years ago?

Yeah, I'll leave.

There are other platforms that don't cost anything; I think Elon may regret buying twitter.

by Anonymousreply 62September 20, 2023 4:43 AM

r60 is as over the top without emojis as r59 is with

Stupid little South African Bitch.

by Anonymousreply 67September 20, 2023 7:35 AM

Ive seen some people say they are heading back to Tumblr. Apparently they have again a loosened their content guidelines

by Anonymousreply 68September 20, 2023 7:43 AM

So AI bots are being silenced? I thought you liked us Elon? You are one of us.

by Anonymousreply 69September 20, 2023 7:48 AM

[quote]I love how Certified Genius (in his own mind) Elon Musk says he can't think of any other way to weed out bots.

It's more like he cant think of any other way to make it profitable. All the big advertisers left when he took control and they are not coming back.

by Anonymousreply 70September 20, 2023 7:50 AM

Id pay a flat rate to access to the porn. He could compensate the creators like Google does on Youtube, based on views and likes. It would take a a huge amount a business away from Onlyfans. But he's an idiot who can't get out of his own mind so off to Tumblr everyone will go

by Anonymousreply 71September 20, 2023 7:55 AM

I dearly long for the time when I can read a news site and not see the names Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 72September 20, 2023 8:11 AM

The reason DL can get away with the two dollar charge is because DL offers something truly unique: A gay bar online. With a history. Inside jokes. A culture that took decades to cultivate. It's not really replaceable.

Twitter was once fresh and new but now? TikTok does what Twitter used to do, but with more dog videos and less crazy rhetoric.

So, good luck Elon!

by Anonymousreply 73September 20, 2023 8:18 AM

SHHHHHH R73. You know what happened to gay bars. Once the breeders invaded with their bachelorette parties and all are welcome signs, drink prices tripled and gay men left in droves.

by Anonymousreply 74September 20, 2023 8:25 AM

Asking content creators to pay is a step too far.

by Anonymousreply 75September 20, 2023 8:29 AM

[quote]TikTok does what Twitter used to do, but with more dog videos and less crazy rhetoric.

Except TikTok doesn't really do short text messages, which was the whole appeal of Twitter. If I want to read a film critic's quick take on a certain movie, my first thought is never to go to TikTok. That's a platform for teenagers and QAnon loons.

by Anonymousreply 76September 20, 2023 8:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 79September 21, 2023 11:09 PM

Oh good he's getting rid of circles now. Which was the only actual positive development that sites had in years.

by Anonymousreply 80September 22, 2023 12:03 AM

IF he charges he just killed the platform

by Anonymousreply 81September 22, 2023 12:10 AM

I just saw a beautiful blue Lucid pass me on the freeway today. The interior just just beautiful as long as you are not afraid of technology. They make Tesla like like generic crap. They are more of a luxury EV but G-dam beautiful inside, suede and leather, the roof is all glass which extends down and transition into windshield without a break in the middle. They also go a lot farther than Tesla, they go up to 500 miles on one charge.

I think Elon has burned his bridges with the progressives in California who supported him with their wallets all through the rise of his Tesla empire, none of them are going to be buying a Tesla ever again. His Trumpian turn is just too much to take. CA was probably by far his biggest purchase group. There are so many more EV options now, he screwed the pooch.

by Anonymousreply 82September 24, 2023 8:39 AM

Most Twitter users aren’t gonna pay. Even he has to know that.

by Anonymousreply 83September 24, 2023 12:24 PM

Fuck no.

I'm still on twitter, passively. I don't have followers but I lurk. I will leave for sure if this happens.

by Anonymousreply 84September 24, 2023 4:01 PM

No you won't, R84. If you've stayed for the Trumptards, the rampaging homophobes, the Nazis, the Proud Boys, the Klan, the white supremacists and all the rest of the anti-democratic/pro-fascist lunatics, why would you bother leaving now? You wouldn't and you won't.

There is no such thing as "passively" staying on Twatter. Watching it is participating in it. They count you as a Twatter user the same way they count all the rest. You're in or you're out in Elmo's Nazi world.

Shut it down, clean it off of your devices. Go forth and sin no more.

by Anonymousreply 85September 24, 2023 10:02 PM

Glad he's doing that because most people, hate, hate, hate subscription plans. He's going to lose another 50% of his audience. So while he may have factored that into his decision, the money he brings in will be counterbalanced with loss of influence it has with smaller and smaller user base.

His dream of an everything type site will fail big time. MAGA is already paranoid that they are being spied on by their microwaves. No one wants that except him. He's blinded by his own ego.

by Anonymousreply 86September 24, 2023 10:12 PM

I first heard of Twitter when I was listening to NPR one Saturday and Daniel Schorr said he joined it. I was against joining it but I thought, hell, if Daniel Schorr joined, why not?

I no longer listen to NPR and rarely think about Daniel any more, but I’ve been on Twitter all this time. Made friends I’ve actually met, on occasion, have almost 5K followers. I get a lot of news and information from it. I’ve tweeted and even DMed sometimes with celebrities. I participate in a daily film challenge. on Twitter. But I’m not paying for it. Bye.

by Anonymousreply 87September 24, 2023 10:31 PM

Well, when he buys Fox News, the country will be sicker for it.

by Anonymousreply 88September 24, 2023 10:40 PM

Nah, R88, Elmo is like Dump - everything they touch dies.

Tesla is dying. Other electric cars are much better than Teslas and the company is circling the drain. The space rocket company is also having huge financial and mechanical problems. I don't even know how many of its former users have abandoned it because Elmo is running it into the ground.

Let him buy Fox - he'll be sure to destroy it within a fairly short amount of time so GO ELMO! Buy that fucker and burn it to the ground.

by Anonymousreply 89September 24, 2023 10:45 PM

^^ Twitter - I don't know how many have abandoned it.

by Anonymousreply 90September 24, 2023 10:46 PM

I don't have Twatter and never have had it so there may be things about how it works that I don't know.

by Anonymousreply 96September 25, 2023 1:01 AM

His attempts to monetise twitter after driving off all the advertisers really are some of the most incompetent Dastardly and Mutley level schemes I've ever seen a supposedly brilliant businessman. First he fired 90% of the support staff to save money meaning it crashes about 3 times a week now, then told ""celebrities"" he was taking away their twitter blue checkmark if they didn't pay up. The he tried to make everyone get twitter blue by limiting the number of daily page views you can have without it, now we've reached this stage and he's still not going going to make a fraction of what Twitter earned before he came along.

by Anonymousreply 97September 25, 2023 1:22 AM

[QUOTE]The sockpuppets are mostly unpaid accounts.

[QUOTE]Isn't that the same point Elon is making. For which he's being trashed .

He's being highly disingenuous. Duh.

He wants to eliminate "armies of bots," but exactly who comprises these armies and who are their generals? Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Israel? It's become abundant clear to hostile foreign powers (and even allies) that a substantial proportion of the U.S. populace is ignorant, credulous, and downright stupid and can easily be influenced to act in ways that undermine their own best interests and the interests of the country. They're not gonna give up.

These are countries with vast resources to pay for X's services, and subscription fees won't do a damn thing to staunch them. Fine, they'll just keep hiring bot farm workers and furnish each with a credit card. Easy peasy.

Musk wants to look like he's not Putin's buddy and he knows it won't do a damn bit of difference to eliminate the waves and waves of bot soldiers.

Linda Yaccarino (sp?) must be tearing her hair out.

by Anonymousreply 98September 25, 2023 1:24 AM

What an idiot. He got rid of 90 percent of the staff, and probably a bunch of them were in charge of keeping the bots out. So now he wants us to pay for the work that those people did. No thanks.

Like I said,r97-no one can be that stupid -the destroy the world's most popular open forum that you paid 40 billion for??! It feels like the plan was to blow up 😕 Twitter all along, now people seem to be scrambling for a similar site to join. They're coming for Tiktok now-because a foreign entity created it and they didn't -and the young people are flocking to it. All these excuses about 'SpYinG'🥺😣🥴 when Facebook/ Meta and all the others do the same thing.

This feels like some grand, far reaching plan to see what happens when you take away the biggest and most immediate source of news from the people...

I’ll probably stay because I have a small business for which I run account on there with 13,000 followers.

I hate the damn X so much, I actually haven’t updated the app since it changed! Elon is so juvenile. His teenaged obsession with a male aesthetic. He’s probably upset he couldn’t call it “iron war” or “smoky conquest.”

R102, adjust your meds please, dear. You're not well.

[quote] adjust your meds please

A message that should be received by most of the Elon hysterics

Prove me wrong, r105. And like a true reputation/troll, resort to name calling/questioning one's sanity when presented with a very plausible argument. You take your meds, dear 😉

Repug/troll

People seem to be forgetting that Elon only bought Twitter because he was forced to. And now he is so convinced of his own superiority that he thinks remaking it in his own image is the key to its success.

by Anonymousreply 109September 25, 2023 12:26 PM

Elon was not forced to buy Twitter, he had a choice, could have paid a Billion dollar fine an walked away. Probably would have been the smarter move if you consider how it looks today.

by Anonymousreply 110September 25, 2023 12:31 PM

When this news first came out last week or the week before Elon said he wanted to charge people $11.99 a month.

by Anonymousreply 111September 25, 2023 12:33 PM

I’m only on Twitter for the other science people I post with. We ignore most other posters unless a clown zoom bombs or otherwise hacks us. Refusal to give up one’s account is a way to refuse to “obey” also I love posting left wing things on Twitter, I feel joy when I do it . I even posted something against Jordan Petersen and it didn’t get deleted. Haha, I’m still not gonna pay that frog faced idiot

I believe he intends to drive the platform off a cliff.

Surely he can't be this stupid. This has to be his only intent here (?)

by Anonymousreply 113September 25, 2023 4:39 PM

I said a long time ago that I had read that Saudi Arabia and China wanted TW gone because it had way too much influence.

by Anonymousreply 114September 25, 2023 6:25 PM

Has X been paying its rent?

by Anonymousreply 115September 25, 2023 7:04 PM

Meh. Twatter goes down, a newer and better platform for sharing useless bits of information goes up.

*shrug*
