Elon Musk says X (Twitter) will charge everyone to use the platform
Elon Musk said Monday he's moving to require all users to pay a monthly fee to use his social media site X, previously called Twitter.
Musk said: "The single-most important reason we're moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system is it's the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots."
Musk said adding a subscription would make it much more difficult for bots to create accounts, because each bot would need to register a new credit card.
He added that the company plans to come out with "a lower tier pricing," than what it currently charges for its X Premium subscribers, which is around $8 monthly.
Will you pay or leave?

Credit card numbers are a substitute for a real-ID and I'm fine with it. The armies of scammers and bots on social media is unhealthy. I used to be totally against such measures, but this was before you could buy followers and likes, before the massive influx of Russian trolls and before the Indian subcontinent became a harbour for professional scammers. Make it very affordable, but demand a credit card number to associate a tweet with a person who will be banned or held liable.

this is why I have doubts it will actually happen. A lot of people just casually drop in on twitter and won't want to pay. If he's serious about the bots thing, maybe something like what Paypal used to do - linking the credit card but only charging a tiny amount but even so, I can see a lot of people not trusting that or not wanting to go through the hassle.

"Musk said adding a subscription would make it much more difficult for bots to create accounts, because each bot would need to register a new credit card."
Really? A new credit card for each bot? Does that imply you cant use the same credit card on more than one account because it serves as some sort of unique identity verification? Is he planning to go the Facebook route where they discourage people from making multiple accounts and especially since the election meddling crap started requiring legal names? I knew a lot of drag queens that had just been using their regular Facebook profile as their business account for years with their drag name, because they'd been around since Business Pages etc had been a thing
If he's gonna start requiring some kind of minimal fee basically just to verify the credit card and link an account to a human identity, he should continue that logic and allow one verified paying human to have as many accounts linked to that as they want. So much of twitter culture and function depends on people being able to make a side account to focus on certain hobbies or groups or just for a specific joke or whatever! If suddenly each new @account costs its own monthly subscription the whole thing falls apart. For example I have my main twitter, my private twitter to talk shit, a dirty art account, a private porn account for my own collections, a shared private porn account with an ex where we still retweet shit we think is hot to flirt (we moved to twitter after tumblr killed adult content), and then like 5 other random handles I have parked or empty portfolio/brand accounts waiting to be fleshed out. That doesnt include the dozen or so twitter accounts for various work clients and projects. Our company has never hesitated to just make a new account to test things or curate content or interact in different ways, experimentation was free.
And ok so its still public, its still something that can be linked to and referenced in blog posts? The non paying members of the public can look but not speak if they cant or wont pay? Ugh this whole thing is falling apart so rapidly and completely there's hardly a point in picking apart the obvious. I keep thinking Im over it but every time a show, movie, book or podcast casually mentions Twitter as an established understood thing I feel that hollow thump of anger

I've said this before ,but I think the whole plan all along was to bring Twitter down-the #1 free source of real time news 🗞️ worldwide. They claim he was 'forced' to buy Twitter -for for 40 billion -which is a drop in the bucket 🪣 for the world's richest man. 😞 I'm sure that he will be reimbursed by his fellow demented and rich cronies if the goal is to destroy the platform. What was the point of 'rebranding' it 'X' after it's original name has entered the lexicon as a verb? What does it even mean? 😭 Why not just pick any letter of the alphabet? It clearly has a very dark 🌑 and Orwellian meaning to this person. 👿
Whatever Twitter has become,no one can argue that it has brought important stories and protests from around the world 🌎 center stage that would otherwise be hidden in tne shadows. These 👿 really think they can control everyone's voice and opinions. But that's the good thing about advancing technology -its ever growing and ever changing to adapt to the needs of the times . I've always thought that the advent photography helped to end slavery, because now there was visual proof 😞 at the atrocities committed during that 'peculiar institution'. 'They' want to keep silencing the voices of dissent -and what better way to do that than to destroy Twitter? Now they want to charge you for expressing your opinions -and they know the majority of the oppressed don't have to money 💰 to pay. Twitter was a major avenue for lesser voices without a platform to be heard and they are trying to stamp that out.
Let them have Twitter -or whatever he wants to call it -something new and better will come along -one person -or a group of his like minded rich cohorts - can't silence the voices of the majority.

I just saw a beautiful blue Lucid pass me on the freeway today. The interior just just beautiful as long as you are not afraid of technology. They make Tesla like like generic crap. They are more of a luxury EV but G-dam beautiful inside, suede and leather, the roof is all glass which extends down and transition into windshield without a break in the middle. They also go a lot farther than Tesla, they go up to 500 miles on one charge.
I think Elon has burned his bridges with the progressives in California who supported him with their wallets all through the rise of his Tesla empire, none of them are going to be buying a Tesla ever again. His Trumpian turn is just too much to take. CA was probably by far his biggest purchase group. There are so many more EV options now, he screwed the pooch.

His attempts to monetise twitter after driving off all the advertisers really are some of the most incompetent Dastardly and Mutley level schemes I've ever seen a supposedly brilliant businessman. First he fired 90% of the support staff to save money meaning it crashes about 3 times a week now, then told ""celebrities"" he was taking away their twitter blue checkmark if they didn't pay up. The he tried to make everyone get twitter blue by limiting the number of daily page views you can have without it, now we've reached this stage and he's still not going going to make a fraction of what Twitter earned before he came along.

He's being highly disingenuous. Duh.
He wants to eliminate "armies of bots," but exactly who comprises these armies and who are their generals? Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Israel? It's become abundant clear to hostile foreign powers (and even allies) that a substantial proportion of the U.S. populace is ignorant, credulous, and downright stupid and can easily be influenced to act in ways that undermine their own best interests and the interests of the country. They're not gonna give up.
These are countries with vast resources to pay for X's services, and subscription fees won't do a damn thing to staunch them. Fine, they'll just keep hiring bot farm workers and furnish each with a credit card. Easy peasy.
Musk wants to look like he's not Putin's buddy and he knows it won't do a damn bit of difference to eliminate the waves and waves of bot soldiers.

Like I said,r97-no one can be that stupid -the destroy the world's most popular open forum that you paid 40 billion for??! It feels like the plan was to blow up 😕 Twitter all along, now people seem to be scrambling for a similar site to join. They're coming for Tiktok now-because a foreign entity created it and they didn't -and the young people are flocking to it. All these excuses about 'SpYinG'🥺😣🥴 when Facebook/ Meta and all the others do the same thing.
This feels like some grand, far reaching plan to see what happens when you take away the biggest and most immediate source of news from the people...

That Lucid is nice, but does it come in different models outside of that geeky sedan?

I’ll probably stay because I have a small business for which I run account on there with 13,000 followers.
I hate the damn X so much, I actually haven’t updated the app since it changed! Elon is so juvenile. His teenaged obsession with a male aesthetic. He’s probably upset he couldn’t call it “iron war” or “smoky conquest.”

R102, adjust your meds please, dear. You're not well.

[quote] adjust your meds please
A message that should be received by most of the Elon hysterics

Prove me wrong, r105. And like a true reputation/troll, resort to name calling/questioning one's sanity when presented with a very plausible argument. You take your meds, dear 😉

People seem to be forgetting that Elon only bought Twitter because he was forced to. And now he is so convinced of his own superiority that he thinks remaking it in his own image is the key to its success.

Elon was not forced to buy Twitter, he had a choice, could have paid a Billion dollar fine an walked away. Probably would have been the smarter move if you consider how it looks today.

When this news first came out last week or the week before Elon said he wanted to charge people $11.99 a month.

I’m only on Twitter for the other science people I post with. We ignore most other posters unless a clown zoom bombs or otherwise hacks us. Refusal to give up one’s account is a way to refuse to “obey” also I love posting left wing things on Twitter, I feel joy when I do it . I even posted something against Jordan Petersen and it didn’t get deleted. Haha, I’m still not gonna pay that frog faced idiot

I believe he intends to drive the platform off a cliff.
Surely he can't be this stupid. This has to be his only intent here (?)

I said a long time ago that I had read that Saudi Arabia and China wanted TW gone because it had way too much influence.

Has X been paying its rent?

Meh. Twatter goes down, a newer and better platform for sharing useless bits of information goes up.
*shrug*
