How can I watch the movie Caligula?

I want to see Peter O’Toole perving it out. With Helen Mirren.
How can I watch the movie Caligula?

Most people use their eyes.

And that's "Sir, may I watch 'Caligula,' Sir?"

by Anonymousreply 5September 15, 2023 1:40 AM

Looks like AIDS!!!

by Anonymousreply 6September 15, 2023 1:41 AM

Thanks R3. Love the subtitles.

by Anonymousreply 7September 15, 2023 1:41 AM

Its very interesting. It is two different movies spliced together in one hardcore mess.

by Anonymousreply 8September 15, 2023 1:44 AM

Famously, John Gielgud said to Helen Mirren, as she was appearing topless:

[bold]Helen. Boobies, boobies, boobies![/bold]

by Anonymousreply 9September 15, 2023 1:55 AM

as R8 said. I'd love to see it as it was originally filmed from Gore Vidal's Screenplay. I saw the original release with all the porn inserted and the real historical stuff cut out. I'm sure its a very different film. I once had the chance to talk to Peter O'toole before he died and couldn't help but ask him about this. He gave me that famous laugh! A memory I'll never forget.

by Anonymousreply 10September 15, 2023 1:56 AM

I don't know, how CAN you?

I've heard it's a shitty movie. Why put yourself through that?

by Anonymousreply 11September 15, 2023 2:16 AM

Hey was such a great man. I wish I had more time to spend with him. One of my life's regrets.

by Anonymousreply 12September 15, 2023 2:16 AM

I love the commentaries on the film and its filming. Everyone admittedly signed on because of the big money, and of course the result was a hideous freak, like "Man with Two Heads," as R8 noted. It's just dull, despite the camp of failed promise and the incredible collection of talent that simply were wasted.

Not just wasted. More like a group of greats and near-greats paid and then realizing they were just to be hit with thick spray of hog shit and then set afire. You'd think THAT would make the viewing tremendous fun.

Or maybe chemicals would improve the experience of watching it.

by Anonymousreply 13September 15, 2023 2:19 AM

Tiberius loved his little fishes

by Anonymousreply 14September 15, 2023 4:12 AM

Peter O’Toole is FABULOUS.

by Anonymousreply 15September 15, 2023 1:07 PM

There are lots of naked men in it, so there's that.

On another website about the film there's a quote by John Gielgud in which he reportedly said, "I've never seen so much cock in my life".

by Anonymousreply 16September 16, 2023 6:17 AM

You're not going to see Peter getting it on with anyone.

by Anonymousreply 17September 16, 2023 6:50 AM

Malcolm McDowell does some nudity.

by Anonymousreply 18September 16, 2023 7:03 AM

I saw the movie a few years ago, I'm pretty sure it was on streaming, but damned if I can remember where! Youtube??? If so, was it PPV or something that was taken down after I saw it?

FYI it was unspeakably bad. And it made me never want to have sex again.

by Anonymousreply 19September 16, 2023 9:01 AM

I know you can watch it on fmovies

by Anonymousreply 20September 16, 2023 10:08 AM

For all the hype about the debauchery, it’s a boring film. We rented it when I was in college with great expectations for fun but terrible raunch, but it was mostly just terrible: flat and unengaging, even on a smut level.

by Anonymousreply 21September 16, 2023 12:07 PM

It's deadly boring. There are a couple of graphic sex shots that are so fast you'll miss them if you blink. The rest of the movie drags on and on.

by Anonymousreply 22September 16, 2023 5:29 PM

In the longer version there are several minutes of hardcore sex that Guccione edited in. You see one guy ("Lucky Fellows") with a big cock getting a blowjob and cumming. In another scene, two uncut cocks ejaculate cum into a bowl.

by Anonymousreply 23September 17, 2023 6:48 AM

I’ve tried watching it twice in my lifetime and it was as others have said, intensely boring. Just a complete mess.

by Anonymousreply 24September 17, 2023 12:47 PM

The version streaming at R3 has all these scenes. Yes it's boring, there is little character development and nothing really happens other than (nasty) sex and executions. But the sets are pretty good and some of the Italian extras are hot. The scenes where he turns on Macro are decent. And it's probably a realistic portrait of imperial Rome, at least when you believe Suetonius.

by Anonymousreply 25September 17, 2023 2:38 PM

Does it still have the scene where the lesbians pee on each other while giggling?

by Anonymousreply 26September 17, 2023 2:42 PM
Hey was such a great man. I wish I had more time to spend with him. One of my life's regrets.

Who -- Caligula? My, you ARE old, aren't you?

by Anonymousreply 27September 17, 2023 2:44 PM

Watch Satyricon instead.

by Anonymousreply 28September 17, 2023 5:10 PM

BBC's I, Claudius is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 29September 17, 2023 5:21 PM

I want to see SIR JOHN GIELGUD get it on.

by Anonymousreply 30September 17, 2023 5:22 PM

Gielgud was originally approached to play Tiberius but he chickened out and played a very asexual Nerva instead.

by Anonymousreply 31September 17, 2023 5:37 PM

"Watch Satyricon instead."

You mean the Fellini version? I saw it back in the day, and it's also an incoherent mess. Not nearly as bad as "Caligula", but it isn't good.

by Anonymousreply 32September 17, 2023 6:25 PM

I agree R32 - “Satyricon” is essentially Fellini’s “New York, New York.”

by Anonymousreply 33September 17, 2023 6:39 PM

Malcolm McDowell said on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast he wanted to do a one-man show about the production of the film.

by Anonymousreply 34September 17, 2023 6:59 PM

The hardcore shots were added when Guccione realized the movie was shit and he had to find a way to sell it.

by Anonymousreply 35September 17, 2023 7:05 PM

Haven’t seen it in years. The disembowelment shocked me.

by Anonymousreply 36September 17, 2023 7:41 PM

Guiccione? I remember my pervy dad and his friends couldn’t wait to see it.

by Anonymousreply 37September 17, 2023 7:56 PM

I love the derision heaped upon poor OP for asking a simple question. DL, don’t ever stop being you!

by Anonymousreply 38September 17, 2023 7:59 PM

Why derision, R38? I enjoy the conversation. And, yes, Fellini's Sartyricon is a mess and has not aged well either, R33.

by Anonymousreply 39September 18, 2023 1:59 AM
BBC's I, Claudius is amazing.

Though not enough dick.

by Anonymousreply 40September 18, 2023 2:04 AM

"I, Claudius" has BAFTA-winning performances by Sir Derek Jacobi and Dame Sian Phillips as Claudius and Livia. It was the forerunner of shows like "ROME", "The Borgias", "The Sopranos" and "Game of Thrones".

by Anonymousreply 41September 18, 2023 6:57 AM

OK why does McDowell always play characters with paranoid schizophrenia? He was as cute as a button and manly af.

OToole was good in the film but the story from McDowell about how wasted o toole got for the disembowlment scene where he accidentally knocked the guy out .So exciting to see them performing together. Helen Mirren was used as a prop. I’m thinking that Gielgud was cool to be in it

There are a lot of size meat sightings available especially at the end of the film

by Anonymousreply 42September 18, 2023 3:23 PM
OK why does McDowell always play characters with paranoid schizophrenia?

Have you seen his face?

by Anonymousreply 43September 18, 2023 4:29 PM

OP? You must have better things to do. Believe me.

by Anonymousreply 44September 18, 2023 5:54 PM

R41, I think Brian Blessed is awesome as Augustus too. He does not look the part (in conventional terms) but he is very convincing. Better than Roddy McDowall for sure.

by Anonymousreply 45September 18, 2023 5:59 PM

R45, I agree. I think Brian Blessed's performance as Augustus is one of the highlights of his career. He won the New York Film Critic's Circle Award for it.

The scene where Augustus lines up his daughter's lovers in a row and interrogates them is great. ("Is there anyone in Rome who has not slept with my daughter?!").

His death scene is another highlight.

by Anonymousreply 46September 19, 2023 6:32 AM

there is a totally new cut of Caligula coming this year. Uses all different takes and shots than the original. Also looks great when its cleaned up...

by Anonymousreply 47September 19, 2023 6:57 AM

Awesome R47. How can they make a movie out of entirely different takes and shots? Did they have several cameras rolling simultaneously?

by Anonymousreply 48September 19, 2023 12:26 PM

Oh honey, I saw that thing on its original release. I don't care what they do or find or re-edit....it's AWFUL.

by Anonymousreply 49September 19, 2023 2:05 PM

Watch Sebastiane instead. It's a lot gayer.

by Anonymousreply 50September 19, 2023 3:11 PM

I saw it decades ago on homo video or HBO or something. All I remember is that it was very weird how hardcore sex scenes were spliced in, and that none of it was very sexy or titillating. Just weird. Would not recommend. I concur with R44, you have better things to do.

by Anonymousreply 51September 19, 2023 4:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 52September 19, 2023 4:22 PM

What is wrong with his skin in OP's pic?

by Anonymousreply 53September 19, 2023 4:40 PM

r48 A young film historian spent a few years collecting everything there was to find in terms of different cuts, reels, the original director has done hundreds of interviews, then interviewed him some more, spoke with crew members and finally met with the new Penthouse CEO who wanted to help him--then they hit the motherlode--New Penthouse CEO found out about an old storage unit that the previous owner stopped payment on. They were days away from throwing it all out. The entire Caligula archive was found. All of the production books, hundreds of reels of film (some pristine, some degrading), etc. It's also easier and cheaper than ever to do color correction, remove scratches, add back damaged frames with AI. Same with sound. So this should look better than it ever did.

They also found edits from the original director's rough cut. When the guy who owned Penthouse fired the director, he hired a new editor and they started editing from scratch. So aside from the hardcore porn that was dropped in, the cut of the version we've previously seen wasn't anything like what the director intended. The new editor also bizarrely kept in weird camera zooms. they're kind of cool but distracting and were never intended to be put in the movie, they were resetting the shot (the cameraman was getting a wide shot, then zooming in for a closeup to be edited separately, and they kept the zoom)

by Anonymousreply 54September 20, 2023 8:12 AM

Did Helen show her tits, ass and pussywillow in this?

by Anonymousreply 55September 20, 2023 9:55 AM
at least when you believe Suetonius

The original Robin Leach

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2023 10:49 AM

R 54, thanks for these insights! I was always puzzled by these weird zooms. Can’t wait to see the new version. I think the sets and costumes were fabulous, love the use of red colors.

That fisting scene on the grooms wedding night by Caligula was startling.

by Anonymousreply 60September 20, 2023 1:26 PM

He fisted some poor fool on his wedding night

by Anonymousreply 61September 20, 2023 2:55 PM

Not just on his wedding night. At his wedding, in front of the guests.

by Anonymousreply 62September 20, 2023 5:32 PM

Is that Liam Neeson that Mirren is munching on at R59? Or did she suck an extra?

by Anonymousreply 63September 20, 2023 5:36 PM

No one has answered my question so I will take a guess and say the character had syphilis? Yea or nay?

by Anonymousreply 64September 20, 2023 5:50 PM

Syphilis was not around in antiquity, R64. It’s a case of badly done bad makeup.

by Anonymousreply 65September 20, 2023 6:36 PM

No, the makeup was meant to indicate syphilis, because nobody involved in the production could be arsed to look up the history of STDs.

by Anonymousreply 66September 20, 2023 9:29 PM

Whose is that cock in Mirren's gob?!

by Anonymousreply 67September 20, 2023 9:41 PM

Caligula is a surefire cure for sex addiction.

by Anonymousreply 68September 20, 2023 11:16 PM

Well, now you sent me on a quest for knowledge.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 69September 20, 2023 11:28 PM

Helen Mirren is barely in the film, blink and you will miss her

The non porn portion of the film are poorly lit and cheap looking. The pornography is very hardcore, not pg anything and defies all logic.

No one is gonna sit through two hours of a bad TV movie to see two minutes of porn even if it is very hardcore.
