Open Floor Plan in homes- yay or nay?

Do you like an open floor plan in homes? I usually take this to mean combo kitchen / diner / living room on the first floor, or main area.

What say you, DL?

I hate cooking smells, and I don’t bake nice smelling things like cookies or apple pie, but prepare bacon, fry garlic and so on. So open plan is my idea of hell.

Fray’s LOVE open floor plans. “They’re open and airy”, they say ad nauseam on HGTV. They play the mama bear, watching, seeing and hearing everything. The husband and kids have no privacy without mommy frau watching their every move.

Interestingly, many kids who grew up in those homes hate the concept. They like houses with separate rooms.

Open floor plan is not conducive to watching porn on the big screen and masturbating.

It’s okay but it doesn’t leave you with much wall space to hang art.

Why would I want to mix with the help out in the kitchen? It's never a good idea to get too friendly with any of them, unless it's a pool boy name Paolo.

Plus, why own several sets of china and silverware, if you're not going to let your guests see the service in all its elegance laid out on beautiful table in an actual dining room?

Way too basic and overdone

I miss walls.

I don’t like it all but I really only get angry when they do it to old homes.

by Anonymousreply 8September 14, 2023 10:35 PM

I like old homes that had a room with a door for everything. I’d love a big kitchen with lots of counter space, big windows, and to have it completely closed off.

IMO, The only place "open concept" really works is in the foyer.

You want to have people wait in that big open space, while your butler or personal assistant leaves them there to announce their arrival.

And you don't want to have any furniture there for them to sit on. .. Just let them stand there, so they can look around and admire the art work, sculptures, light fixtures, etc. that you own and imagine what it would be like to slide down the banister of your grand staircase.

There is nothing better than a dining room.

Open floor plans were very 2000's. Dirty kitchens exposed, bad smells, no privacy. Horrible. All new renovations will be building the walls back up now.

The host should always have an area in the kitchen that is out of the guest's eyesight to hide the last minute gruesome recoveries of a meal gone wrong.

These idiot islands that look for all the world like an office desk with a sink, hovering out in the middle of a condo, are ridiculous. What is the host supposed to do, toss fish to the guests at the table like they're seals in a zoo?

I despise fully-open concept kitchen/dining/livingroom.

Developers just cutting costs, and convincing you its 'all the rage'.

Is the trend ovah?

I wonder how many times the phrases "open floor concept," "large kitchen island," and "stainless steel appliances" have been uttered on HGTV?

by Anonymousreply 15September 23, 2023 9:18 PM

I don’t mind open floor plans per se. The thing I hate is when you can see the kitchen as soon you walk through the front door, which can happen in new open floor builds and old closed up homes. I also don’t like front doors that open directly into one large room containing the various spaces (living, dining, kitchen). Feels like a warehouse. Open floor plans with some formality at the entry are usually tolerable. Basically the “openness” needs to be away from the front door.

The labeling of spaces at r16 as hobby room, flex space, cafe, and gathering makes me want to put my fist through the wall.

by Anonymousreply 17September 23, 2023 10:27 PM

The Flex Room is where one stashes the rent boy, and The Hobby Room is where all the toys are, including a fold-out massage table and ceiling attachments for the sling.
