The few times I heard of other women being outright homophobic would be them hurling gay slurs at straight men after being rejected by them.

Of course the far more common straight women offenses are the "Use your gay buddy like an accesory" mentality that has been EVERYWHERE in the media for the last 30 years, including in very progressive, modern shows like Sex and the City, and also (I had one gay male friend complain to me about some women doing this) how some women emasculate gay friends by changing clothes in front of them or otherwise treating them like female friends. I'm a gay-friendly woman, and in my experience homophobic women are usually mirroring homophobic men they love, whether fathers, partners or sons. Many women conform closely to the men they love, in a way that most men do not reciprocate.

I've rarely met a woman who was homophobic because she thought men were "getting all the good ones". Physically, the men who appeal to men and the men who appeal to women are frequently quite different anyway.

Women who disapprove of promiscuity, whether gay or straight, are always going to be judgy, and that comes from an innate sense that all people of high moral fibre do and think as they do. In other words, total naivety.

Why can't straight women be homophobic? I know on average, women are more tolerant to LGBT than men. But women are not always above men on the moral/ethical side of things. Now the reason there are homophobic women is the same reason there are homophobic men, heteronormative/homophobic culture, religion (which women tend to be more religious/spiritual than men on average) and perhaps bad experiences (maybe they had a bf/hubby who was gay/bi didn't tell them or maybe they were bullied by a gay man).

Bigotry is not confined to the male species. Women are just as ignorant and short-sighted as men. I think women though tend to be more willing to sympathize and even learn different perspectives which is why even conservative women are more accepting of an LGBT person for instance than a conservative man. But even then these women may still hold conservative/heteronormative and passively homophobic views. All types of homophobia are bad, so it's not okay either. But I don't understand why if men are raised to be homophobic, it would not also apply to women.
