The Medusa Touch (1978) Let's Talk About this Forgotten Richard Burton Horror Mystery

In honor of the upcoming spooky season, I present this 1978 thriller obviously green-lit to cash in on the Omen/Exorcist craze of the 70s. I was a teen when this came out and never saw it until earlier this week. I was surprised how effective and eerie it is, and the scene where he seems to will a plane to crash into a building is very effective (despite the so-so practical effects). A lot of folks consider this a camp classic but I think it's got strong atmosphere, terrific direction and a creepy script. Anyone else remember this?

Here is the dreadful poster that probably chased people away.

"Film critic Roger Ebert, then co-starring on the television program Sneak Previews (1975) alongside Gene Siskel, named this picture "The Worst Movie of 1978"."

I used to watch movies this like as a kid & thought that if I thought hard even about something ("we are not having green beans again for dinner!") I could make it happen. Even today, if I could pick any superpower, it would be mind control.

OP here. I neglected to state the obvious that this was made also to cash in on the popularity of Carrie

by Anonymousreply 4September 12, 2023 9:18 PM

OP, what are "practical effects"?

by Anonymousreply 5September 12, 2023 9:32 PM

Why does he decide to take out the royal family at the end?

by Anonymousreply 6September 12, 2023 9:33 PM

It is, of course, on Tubi. I may give it a whirl.

Osama bin Laden loved this movie when he was a school boy.

by Anonymousreply 8September 12, 2023 9:35 PM

Guess Richard Burton was short on cash in 1978.

And, Wow! The ravages of one too many scotches....

SPOILERS BELOW ******************************************************

I think the shock ending would be more effective without the corny voiceover. Just end with the realization he is coming for the nuclear plant next.

That truly is a depressing movie poster. If you're trying to attract the Omen crowd they should've highlighted some of the spectacular death scenes, such as the parents getting pushed off a cliff by a driver-less car!

Who had to clean up all the broken car parts at the bottom of that cliff.

by Anonymousreply 12September 13, 2023 11:24 PM

I can declassify things just by thinking it.

R5 Practical effects are special effects that are created by hand rather than produced through digital or computer imaging. That’s the very short answer.

R14 thank you.

[quote]Guess Richard Burton was short on cash in 1978.

He died in '84 and supposedly nearly died in '74 from acute alcoholism, so I suppose this movie is his wife's (Sally?) attempts to get just a little more out of him before the old lush drops dead.

by Anonymousreply 16September 14, 2023 10:34 AM

SPOILERS The suicide scene is really laughably bad.

by Anonymousreply 17September 20, 2023 11:34 PM

That's a rough 52.

by Anonymousreply 18September 20, 2023 11:39 PM

I always confused this with "The Fury."

It has all the parts of a great movie:

Based on a best selling book. Directed by Jack Gold, who was coming off the successful Ace's High.

A good cast- Richard Burton, Lee Remick, Jeremy Brett, Derek Jacobi, Harry Andrews, Sir Michael Hordern, etc.

But it fails.

by Anonymousreply 20September 20, 2023 11:40 PM

I always get this confused with Hennessy. Lee Remick, Rod Steiger, Sir Trevor Howard, Eric Porter, Patrick Stewart, and the great Richard Johnson.

Never heard of it but it's on YouTube. It has Lee Remick in it so I'm completely in.
