The answer is yes. When I 1st came here people were bitchy but not mean for the most part. There were some really funny people who have all but disappeared. Since Trump & covid there has been an anger on this board that wasn't here before. On the other side of the coin though I think there are discussions about things that get serious answers which didn't use to happen here. So like all things, things change but hopefully it will settle down and not scare others away.

The reason that young people aren't on DataLounge isn't because we're too mean, it's because they have no interest in many of the things that DataLoungers never shut up about, like bad seventies sitcoms that most people forgot decades ago.

The younger people I know are wrapped up in other stuff online. My nephew showed me his phone and social media activity. There was a whole page of ongoing conversations with friends, he could see when they were online, you can easily stalk your friends with the huge variety of apps and social connection sites. Some are constantly posting their most recent thought, fart, or meal, not to mention gaming, which is very time-consuming.

Regarding the meanness, it comes with the territory here. It can be more than pointless bitchery and can be downright cruel. I don't think it's age related though, it seems to be all over the place.

Probably but lets face it there's a million and one other content and layout related reasons why anyone who isn't already at least a spiteful elder gay at least at heart isn't paying to join this place beyond hurt feelings.

As an elder gay I see FB and most social media sites a waste of time and energy. FB is pathetic and does not represent who people truly are or the lives they really live. Life is not always a bed of activities,travels and fun times.

I guess that, at 50, I have a little more sympathy for the youngsters. I think it's understandable they would retreat into an online existence and "safe spaces" and language policing etc - because it gives them some sense of control in a world where they grew up feeling like they could be shot dead every time they went to school, oh and the Earth's natural environment is fucked too. This is the legacy we gave them.

There's a general, but palpable undercurrent of rage (as I like to call it) in society at large at the moment. And it's not limited to the elders. If I were a young person today, I'd be mad as hell. Most can't afford property, have mental health issues in many cases related to their over reliance on social media, (ex. self esteem and anxiety issues) and are at odds with the working world's old school ethos which they are hopefully going to change (work from home, work life balance, getting measured on your commitments rather than office presenteeism). I'm rooting for them.

Society is in decline, so is the planet, all thanks to people generally, young and old. Elders have had the advantage of acquiring wealth/property etc just based on timing. This is not a great time to be alive, based on history.

I think we should be kinder to young people. And I think that we should just ignore hateful and venomous posters if they add nothing to the conversation. Too many times people just keep going back and forth trying to get the last word, and it's irritating. Unless it's related to the topic at hand, just move on.

I recently put another poster on Ignore and saw that he had scores/hundreds of posts from common threads. I skimmed through a few and almost every post that I looked at contained an insult. It wasn't bitchiness, it was just rage.

I'm ignoring, then checking to see if I was too heavy handed after looking after their posts. I'd say 80% of my blocks are on-target.

I think most all anonymous chat boards have people who are overly sharp in their discourse. I don't think there's a thing you can do to change that other than forcing everyone to post under a registered name. It's like putting video cameras on school busses.
