Michelle Obama is the closest currently living, but she doesn't have quite the same level of fascination from the general public as JBK did. She lacks the drama and tragedy, with a still-living husband who by all credible accounts is faithful. She's also polarizing (unfairly) because her husband is polarizing (also unfairly). It's hard to impose these Camelot-era notions of female celebrity in these divisive times. But Michelle O. comes close to JBK in this regard.

Diana was another one who came close in her day, because she had an iconic style, but also this veneer of tragedy about her once the truth of her marriage came spilling out. She elicited sympathy for that from the general public that was reminiscent of JBK post-JFK's murder, even as she was playing for the cameras and manipulating the press.

Melania, like it or not, embodies this for the MAGA crowd, but only really for the most committed and most stupid of that lot. She's fascist trash and a literal whore. Jackie played the game and always knew the score and where the goalposts were; "courtesan" is not incorrect to describe her. But a common prostitute? Nude photos? Never!

I lived in DC during the Obama years and I don’t really know how much about her made the news or was just local interest, but people were OBSESSED with where she went to dinner and if she went someplace, first, she went with Secret Service (obviously) but they didn’t clear the places. She was just one of many people there at that time. But then wherever she went, whether it was a very expensive restaurant or a small restaurant on 14th st, became THE place to go after she was there. She must have been so good for business to so many places in DC! She went to a Target in a baseball cap and blue jeans and it made the news and everyone was like “wait. Can she DO that??” Apparently yes! If she wanted to go to Target, she went to Target with as little fanfare as possible.

I can’t imagine Jackie O at a Target if they had been around in her time. Or wearing J. Crew.
