Plowright was hilarious in this scene, as were Richardson's reactions to her.
I saw this on its first release in theaters. It's in need of restoration. It looked beautiful onscreen, shot in Portofino.

Polly walker was so beautiful. Why didn’t her career go anywhere?

I've only seen it once, in an extended family setting with lots of talking and wine. I remember laughing a lot. I really should see it again.

Loved this movie. The ending is killer. (In a good way.)

What happened to Miranda Richardson? It seemed like she was on track to become the next big British actress in America, with this, "Damage", "The Crying Game" and "Tom and Viv". But it never really happened for her.
A shame, as I thought she was excellent. Loved her as Eddie's neurotic friend on "AbFab".

I loved Polly Walker’s assumption about Michael Kitchen’s interest in her and his response.

R8 Miranda Richardson's scene with Jeremy Irons in their kitchen during Damage was oscar worthy.

Polly Walker's been working steadily for over 30 years, R5. She sends her love.

R5 Polly has had a wonderful long career. She was as R14 mentions exquisite in Rome, but she has been wonderful in several other performances. She got properly plump in middle age, but is still beautiful.

I feel the same, R8. Miranda had the goods, she was an exceptional talent. Either she turned her back on more famous projects, or there was something going on in her life we don’t know about. Very curious.

I remember Richardson getting a big build up in the old Premiere magazine when Empire of the Sun came out, shortly after her breakout role in Dance With a Stranger. Like she dominates the screen! Incredible acting! So when I saw it and she had a minuscule role, a handful of lines, I was confused. I mean, she was fine but not pivotal and several other actors were much more memorable.

It’s slow to start but worth it. I did find myself questioning what would become of Miranda Richardson in the last 15 minutes and where her happiness would come from and then I remembered the book was from the 1920’s and she’d have to make it work with Jim Brodbent 😔

R16- I was the one who mentioned her part in Rome not R14

I'm trying to banish memories of seeing the short-lived Broadway version, starring the brilliant Jayne Atkinson alongside overqualified and underused Michael Hayden and DL faves Elizabeth Ashley and Molly Ringwald. A snooze, despite the nude scene by Michael Cumpsty. The cast also included Dagmara Dominczyk -- the future Mrs. Patrick Wilson! (Next stop for her on Broadway: the disastrous THE VIOLET HOUR.)
