My dad had a sort of a Sean Connery air about him....tall, semi bald, brown eyed, heavy eyebrows (which I inherited) kind of distinguished in a very 1960's Hollywood "turtleneck and houndstooth jacket" sort of way. He did have a fair amount of scottish descent so that probably helped.

My mother resembled Princess Diana (they were the same age) in bone structure and eye color, and played up this resemblance by copying Diana’s hair styles and fashion. When Diana died, my mother did a Diana scream of her own, and felt a great kinship to the man in the video when I showed it to her.

When I was growing up my dad just WAS a morphed combo of Jackie Gleason/ Alan Hale Jr / Carroll O’ Connor. After he died and The Sopranos started we were floored by how much James Gandolfini’s Tony had the same build and mannerisms as my dad. He was pretty much “THE guy in the room. My lovely mother who is now weakened by arthritis and dementia was the “ warm and Sunny” Mary Tyler Moore - not the cool depressed one!

I was perhaps 7 yo with my redhaired mum in the supermarket. I noticed this man following behind her. Aisle after aisle. I got scared and ran telling her " Mummy this man is looking at you"! Mum keep glancing over her shoulder till we were done shopping.. We checked out and as we were rolling the cart to the station wagon the man approached us. Timidly he cleared his throat and said " Pardon me Miss but I just had to tell you, you are beautiful like Rita Hayworth!" He fled. Mum blushed, looked at me saying" Get in the car and never tell your father about this!" Of course when we got home I immediately told Dad who broke into a big smile. Wasn't news to him.

Maybe an intentional "error" to thrill the audience, but still there was a decided resemblance. Meantime, my mother looked like a young Ingrid Bergman. Don't look at me like that--it's all true!

A few years ago, I found this great black and white photo of my parents when they were dating. Probably from around 1955 when they were like 18 and 20. I was a surprise baby, and they were 39 and 41 when I was born, so I never knew them when they were young and beautiful. I had it retouched and blown up and have it hanging in my house. They are both gone now and I love seeing the photo every day. It’s interesting to see people’s reactions to it…they were always attractive even when they got older, but they really did look like movie stars when they were young. My gay friends in particular are always going off about how hot my dad was, which kind of creeps me out!
