Vivek Ramaswamy’s team responds to Ann Coulter’s calling his clash with Nikki Haley ‘Hindu business’

She's awful, but I did chuckle...

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter is facing backlash for racist comments she made about the two Indian Americans running for the GOP presidential nomination.

During Wednesday night's Republican presidential debate, Coulter characterized an exchange between former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy as "Hindu business."

"Nikki and Vivek are involved in some Hindu business, it seems," Coulter tweeted. "Not our fight."

"Ann can tweet whatever she wants to," Ramaswamy’s senior adviser and communications director, Tricia McLaughlin, told NBC News. "Vivek shares and lives by the same Judeo-Christian values that this nation was founded on — and the way Vivek lives his family life offers a positive example for their own children and grandchildren."

Ramaswamy is Hindu. Haley was born into a Sikh family and is a Christian, which she has been vocal about in her public life.

The heated exchange Coulter appeared to refer to wasn’t even about religion but rather U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel.

Both conservatives and liberals criticized Coulter for her comment.

"Nikki Haley was born Sikh and is a practising Christian, you racist troglodyte," a person tweeted in response.

Coulter didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ann is correct. Indians who simp for Republicans deserve nothing but scorn

by Anonymousreply 3August 27, 2023 5:45 AM

I’ve been married to an Indian for 20 years and I have to agree with R3.

What the fuck did Ramaswamy expect from conservatives?

He’s delusional and there’s no end to his stupidity.

The left wing gays fight for civil rights for POCs including brown skin Indians , muslims , and they turn against gays eventually . As a gay man, I only care about fellow left wing gay people from now on

Vivek does keep implying he's Christian, when he's actually Hindu.

He has a "10 Commandments" thing around his campaign and [bold]#1 is "God is Real"[/bold]

Thing is , Hindus believe in several gods so, while technically he does believe "God is real," by not being specific as to which god he's referring to nor pluralizing God as Gods he's being deceptive.

The dude is an A-1 bullshit artist and rightwingers eat that shit up.

by Anonymousreply 15August 27, 2023 7:30 AM

I heard a good description Vivek's campaign today. He surveyed the market (Republican primaries) to see what product its consumers (voters) want, and he's producing it. He doesn't care what the positions are, just as long as he's selling the product, including throwing around meaningless tag lines like "Vivek shares the same Judeo-Christian values that this nation was founded on." Doesn't matter whether he believes in them or not, just so long as long as the consumers (voters) buy it. Snake oil salesman.

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2023 7:55 AM

American presidents have always been Christians, and only two were/are Catholic, and even that is a tad too exotic for the American people. There’s no way a Hindu will be nominated, despite the bullshit, bootstrapping myths fed to him his whole life. Girl, you should have converted to Christ when you had the chance! And gotten some skin bleaching too, like the Bollywood stars.

by Anonymousreply 17August 27, 2023 8:25 AM

He's not only Hindu, he's vegetarian which is the real unforgivable sin

by Anonymousreply 18August 27, 2023 8:45 AM

I have an adult student who is retired and conservative. He asked for my opinion about the debates. He wasn't impressed by Vivek's brashness and insulting manners, nor did he like his foreign policy answers - but he acknowledges that his youthful energy was a positive. His favorite was probably Nikki Haley. He seemed surprised when I said that the demographics of the current Republican party are 1/2 evangelical Christians, who will NEVER vote for a non-Christian - EVER - because they are so certain that the US is a Christian nation. In fact, most of that half is not only evangelical Christian but white Christian nationalist, so anyone of color is also not going to get their vote.

VR’s Wikipedia entry makes sure to point out that he practices “monotheistic Hinduism”, probably to assuage the fears of the Evangelicals he’ll have to win over.

The idea that Hinduism is monotheistic one is a new one to me but apparently since all of the hundreds of gods are just different manifestations of one supreme godhead then it’s monotheistic.

by Anonymousreply 29August 27, 2023 11:09 AM

The main reason Hinduism has been defined as a monotheism in America is for tax purposes. Polytheistic faiths are ineligible for categorisation as religions in this context.

Nobody is mentioning how he got rich. He’s a Harvard educated timeshare/MLM salesman and pharmaceuticals are the new timeshares. Remember this - PharmaBro Martin Shkreli did not go to prison for raising the price of a leg saving medication. To greatly enrich himself. That is legal. RamiSmarmy bought drugs that have been R&D’d by pharmaceutical corporations and shelved - because they didn’t work, or it wasn’t worth it to manufacture and sell them - at bargain basement prices, then started his own pharmaceutical companies to sell the drugs at greatly inflated prices. Then the price falls, but he has already made his money and squirreled it away.

Here’s a 2015 Forbes article about what a fantastic, brilliant, charming guy he is and how it’s great he’s making a fortune selling things like an Alzheimer’s drug that seems to improve patients for about 6 months, then the disease continued its progression.

Basically the article says “whether the drugs work or not, this is a brilliantly innovative way to get rich! And he’s so charming.”

It’s been said he’s running for president to avoid a subpoena over one of his Bermuda-based Pharma companies.

These PharmaBros are the scummiest of scum and they rich as fuck and dint care because America says it’s legal to rip off sick, desperate families.

Recently read an article about how Russia targets individuals who are smart and hungry (aggressive) and over a period of years they introduce, then convince them of, kremlin policies, so they will parrot these policies in public. . Doesn’t it seem strange that foreigners come here, make billions by grabbing US govt funding, then become rightwing parrots in favor of Russia? Peter Theil, Elon Musk, Martin Shkreli, Vivek Ramiswamy? When you call out this influx of anti-democratic foreigners/1st generations who are scooping billions out of the US economy and creating an oligarchy, you’re called a xenophobic. It’s brilliant. The media isn’t afraid to criticize 2nd or 3rd generation Americans, but they’re afraid of appearing xenophobic or racist doing deep dives on immigrants/children of immigrants.

R29, that’s always been my understanding of the religion. The one god is Brahma and he has three manifestations: Brahma the Creator, Shiva the Preserver and Vishnu the Destroyer. These three manifestations have their own submanifestations, and sub-submanifestations and so on. I’m not sure how hard this is to follow along if you haven’t been around it a lot— the closest parallel I can draw is Catholicism and the saints— the way people pray to certain saints when they need certain favors— Hinduism is a lot like that.

But it’s an Indian concept, and as such, it’s simultaneously as simple as that, and also infinitely more complex than that.

R62, India is made up of different ethnicities depending on the region. North India had been invaded by Iran, South India was populated by Austro-Aboriginal people, there were/are indigenous tribes, Central Asia (the Stans) comes into play; in the far north eastern area, many Indians have strong East Asian features, etc. Many Nepalis who move to India have eastern eyes, adding to the mix.

Other say it is the other way around, that South Indians (not to be confused with south Asian which encompasses the entire subcontinent) came to Australia, and there are also other theories. No one seems to know for sure on that part, but anyway, India is made of indigenous people and the descendants of people from neighboring regions, and all mixes thereof.

They believe an angry, murderous old man in the sky, his magical son who lived on earth, and a magical bird who's not a bird but a "holy spirit" are all the same "one God." They believe this while claiming belief in more than one god is a dire transgression. They refuse to explain this belief either, it's just a "mystery" and don't ask about it.

Jews believe the entire world and everything in it was created in 6 days. They believe a big flood killed everything except a male/female pair of each species who were saved on a giant boat built by an obvious lunatic and that those pairs of animals went on to repopulate the earth with their offspring. They believe they're God's special BFFs, and that he spoke to Moses through a burning bush, sent "plagues" to their enemies and parted the Red Sea just for them.

You want to see some batshit crazy religious beliefs? Crack open a bible.

India has different religions, too.

Nikki Haley is Sikh.

RamiSmarmy is Hindu.

There are Jains, Buddhists and of course, Muslims.

Iranians moved to India when Islam took over Persia. They preserved their Persian religion, Zoroastrianism, the belief in the Sun God Ahura Mazda, the creator deity, Lord of Wisdom. The language of Iran/Persia is Farsi and the followers of Zoroastrianism are known in India as Parsi. Freddy Mercury and Zubin Mehta were Parsi.

The British greatly favored the Parsi because they didn’t freak out over holy cows (Hindus) or over pork (Muslims). They didn’t mind killing insects, so they wouldn’t allow indoor insect infestations as a result of karmic beliefs. The British saw the Parsi as sensible go-betweens who could handle deals between the British and other Indians. There are very few Parsis left today because they don’t allow male conversion. Pretty much all ,Parsis can trace their patrilineal line back to Iran and they’re pretty adamant about it. Like the British, the Parsis realized that having fewer children meant less poverty and they chose personal familial wealth rather than uncontrolled population growth and abject poverty.

There are Christians in India. There were Christians documented in India by 600s AD. Tradition says that there were Jews in Malabar before the birth of Christ. St Thomas came from Israel to convert them to Christianity. They are eastern rite Christians who follow Syriac Christianity. The Portuguese founded a colony in Goa India in 1400s and converted/married locals to Catholicism. Christianity is the third largest religion in India.

India will surpass China in population due to refusing enforced population control.

India has been aligned with Russia since before partition. Russia saw the British empire as its greatest rival in Asia and helped support Indian rebellion against the British. During the Cold War, Russia continued supporting India against the west and against its eastern rival China.

India is Russia’s largest ally. When the USSR broke apart, Russia began supporting the rightwing in the US as its best weapon to sow dissension, distrust and disarray in America. It’s no surprise that Indian immigrants to the US support the rightwing, who are the allies of Russia within the United States.
Uh, because we could be using that money for programs to keep urban youth of trouble. And a lot of other things.

And I think we all know we wouldn't be. In fact, we could right now switch 2-3 percent of the Defense Budget to other programs, including "keeping urban youth out of trouble." But we all know nothing of the sort is going to happen, ever.

by Anonymousreply 102August 27, 2023 11:13 PM

Also, it would just cost us more money when Russia starts to invade Eastern Europe.

What the idiot going on about “urban youth programs” is referring to is called appropriations. It doesn’t pre-empt the moral and geo-political imperatives of helping Ukraine. Urban youth and Ukraine are not mutually exclusive concerns.

I love the fact that his campaign is trying to suggest that the differences between a Hinduism and Christianity are no bigger than the difference between being an Episcopalian and being a Presbyterian.

Hinduism is polytheistic - a couple of days in India makes that as clear as day. It has a philosophic wing that comes up with the 'Trinitarian style but still monotheism' version that R58 expresses, but that no more represents actual Hinduism than some Late Antique Neo-Platonist represented Greek and Roman polytheism.

by Anonymousreply 106August 28, 2023 11:30 AM
VR’s Wikipedia entry makes sure to point out that he practices “monotheistic Hinduism”, probably to assuage the fears of the Evangelicals he’ll have to win over.

He's never going to assuage "Evangelicals" unless he confesses Jesus Christ as his one Lord and Savior. Monotheism per se cuts no ice with them—unless I've missed where they've stopped hating Muslims and trying to convert Jews.

Charity starts at home, and Ukraine isn't even a NATO member. But it is a money pit, as we can see. And lucrative one for those on the receiving end.

So who is getting rich off aid to Ukraine?

Cui bono?

by Anonymousreply 112August 28, 2023 6:49 PM

Telling Russia, and indirectly China, that you don't get to just grap a lot of territory because your economy is a useless fucked up mess and you hope this will be a fun distraction is worth the very modest cost of helping Ukraine defend itself. Even better if Russian defeat leads to the demise of Putin and Putinism, which it might.

Other than the Hindu nationalists who are, for the time being, just a loud minority, the majority of Hindus love Jesus. As the old quotation attributed to Gandhi goes something like "I love your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ." In my husband's state, many people buy a birthday cake on Christmas to celebrate the birth of Christ, although they're Hindu.

A long time ago, he told me something that may help explain the Hindu worldview a bit better-- he said Hindus believe that everyone is Hindu, regardless of their religion. Jesus is another manifestation of god, just like the hundreds of others. People can say they're Christian, and they can believe they're Christian, but they're just a different type of Hindu-- the Jesus brand is custom-fit to this part of the world.

It must be said, for those who don't know or may have forgotten, in a country with that many people, with dozens of different languages that are not all mutually intelligible-- they have different customs and beliefs within Hinduism. There's no one Hinduism just like there's no one Christianity. Like all religion, different groups interpret it differently. There's a lot of room for interpretation. I've been to the temple a hundred times and never heard a talk about how one should conduct oneself. You come and pray when you want to whatever god you need to pray to, however you do that, and then you leave when you want. It's a 45 minute drive for us and we spend 10-15 minutes there, which seems to be the norm for the non-elderly attendees. I'd rather just do that at home and not give up my Saturday or Sunday afternoon for a ten minute temple visit, but Indians are social. The culture values its interdependence, as opposed to ours, which values independence. It's quite a switch.

The Indians I know do love America, and they're proud to be here. I've seen the kind mentioned here pejoratively, and yes, there are trash Indians just like there are trash any other group. The kids usually turn out OK when all is said and done. These immigrants also contribute a lot to the economy, social security, etc, at a time many 'regular' Americans are part of The Great Resignation, WFH-holdouts, etc. The complaints about the US I do hear are fair-- kids aren't pushed enough and the family units/family-friend support systems are weak.

by Anonymousreply 114August 28, 2023 7:56 PM

Not just vegan, ElderLez, he's said "It's animal cruelty to eat meat". MAGATs can't even understand a guy on his 6th bypass surgery whose cardiologist told them he would die if he ate another burger. They HAAAATE vegetarians

by Anonymousreply 115August 28, 2023 8:15 PM

R114, is nothing but double talk. They say that Hindu nationalists are a vocal minority, but ignore the fact that the Prime Minister and ruling party are, and have been for ten years, Hindu Nationalists.

The final paragraph provides the real talk. To paraphrase:

Some Indians aren’t backwards religious nuts, and the majority which are don’t matter because the kids are somewhat liberalized by being raised here. Regardless, they are good for business and you should be happy they are here working white collar jobs for much less than anyone with sense would and being mindless worker bees that would sell our coworkers down the river for a attaboy from management. While we may say we’re proud to be American, we look down on you, your children, and your culture for being the lazy, decadent Westerners you are.

by Anonymousreply 116August 28, 2023 9:10 PM

But just to be clear: He isn't Jewish or Christian. He's Hindu.

His pathetic pandering of "I share your values" is transparent and pointless. They're never going to accept him as Christian-adjacent. He's brown and he's Hindu, which basically makes him al-Qaeda in their books.

He's like a gay Republican, chasing after Nancy Reagan and Alan Keyes and saying "Please don't kick me out! I'm just like you! Besides, I'm only a top, so I'm not a REAL fag!!!"

by Anonymousreply 117August 28, 2023 9:16 PM

But Americans will believe anything, R117. They don’t know or care how Viv made his billion dollars. They have no idea he’s swindling sick people …oh what the hell, they don’t care. Greed is good, money makes right.

If Viv says he shares their values, they think he does because Viv hates “socialism,” “communism, wokeism.” He hates democrats and says they’re traitors. He loves Russia and hates Ukraine, He lives trump. That’s all they need. They’ll vote for him. He’ll claim he will give money to Christian churches and allow prayer in school. Anything they want to hear, he’ll say. He just wants his mitts on those classified documents since trump normalized stealing top secret information from the national archives. He wants to deregulate all businesses and create monopolies.

by Anonymousreply 118August 28, 2023 9:24 PM

R115, insanity to think it’s cruel to eat meat but be in favor of broiling every living thing alive by flooding the world with fossil fuels. That’s some Kali worshipping level madness.

I am surprised the veganism wasn’t brought up at the debate.

by Anonymousreply 119August 28, 2023 9:40 PM

But I'm White! WHITE!!!!

by Anonymousreply 120August 28, 2023 9:47 PM

Oh, fuck off, R112. The Ukraine isn't a money pit. You don't know what you're talking about, you Russian puppet.

The Ukraine will never join NATO because NATO wouldn't want to run the risk of triggering Article 5 and starting a WW, stupid.

Reconstruction in Ukraine will be a boon for developers, exactly the sort of thing Conservatives usually love, y'know, if it were happening on their watch.

The Ukraine is the best of both worlds for the U.S. - we can sell munitions w/o getting into a war.

by Anonymousreply 121August 28, 2023 9:47 PM
He's brown and he's Hindu, which basically makes him al-Qaeda in their books.

Not really. They will vote for brown or black rightwingers. Look at Hershel Walker. The man is brain damaged and he lost by only 2%.

Hindu Piyush Jindal was elected governor of Louisiana. Deep fucking south. Because he called himself Bobby after the Brady Bunch and underwent a conversion to Catholicism, they said “Fine.” His wife is Indian from a Hindu family. Cannot find whether or not she “converted” to Christianity,

Brown Sikh Namrata Randhawa was elected in South Carolina. Like Piyush, she gave herself a western nickname, unlike Piyush, she married a westerner and got rid of that foreign surname. She had a Sikh and a Methodist wedding. She attends Methodist and Sikh religious ceremonies.

Viv has decided to keep his Hindu name and hasn’t formally attended a ceremony to purportedly change his religion, but so far he’s getting away with just saying he shares Judeo Christian values.

He’s come pretty far with such a small effort.

Americans will believe what people tell them if it conforms to their beliefs. Dress neatly, speak well, smile a lot tell Americans what they want to hear. Be rich. .. that’s important. It didn’t used to be, but since the 1980s it’s one of the top admired things by americans.
