In my occasionally faulty memory, I remember watching the very first episode of The Price is Right and recall the very first game played was "Cash Register", where the player had to get as close as possible to $7. This could be done easily (and for years) by buying 28 packs of gum which cost 25 cents each. You could tell who watched the show and knew this easy trick, as many quickly won the game just by buying gum.

He was really good at the role. There were some hilarious moments, like the time some big hugger was on and she won something and he raced around the stage to avoid another bear hug.

But the stuff with the models crossed the line. (Guess he was a product of his time.)

Also, Drew Carrey looks HORRIBLE at R2. Is that what he looks like these days? Barf, with that hair.

R31 oh fuck off. He fired Holly in 95 for not lying to protect him and the rest in 2000 for the same reasons. It has nothing to do with when he was born and more to how awful he was to those who worked for him. I still watch and enjoy old episodes on the barker era channel but we don't have to pretend he was a saint especially when it came to how he treated women.

by Anonymousreply 62August 26, 2023 8:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 66August 26, 2023 8:39 PM

Yeah, he was way too friendly to the military hunks and other hot male contestants. Plus, watch how delicate he was with his hands on the props. He was a mean old bitch but will forever be part of my childhood.

by Anonymousreply 67August 26, 2023 8:41 PM

He didn't exude warmth. There was something unwelcoming about him. He wasn't like Dick Clark (Pyramid) or even Richard Dawson. I'd say Bob Eubanks also had a coldness to his personality.

[quote] Plus, watch how delicate he was with his hands on the props.

Have you guys seen "Perfect Bid"? It's a documentary about a DLer who watched TPIR every day. He created spreadsheets about the prices of the items on the show. He tried, several times, to get "cast" as a contestant. Finally, he made it on the show.

by Anonymousreply 117August 27, 2023 6:34 PM

The New York Times is very capricious in how it presents obituaries. if you have sone connection with New York, you get more prominence. If you’re a writer you get more prominence than anyone else in the humanities. If you’re in classical music you can usually forget about it unless you’re one of the biggest names if you’re a jazz musician you’ll probably get a fair bit of attention. At least Barker was a king-standing fixture of American life

There are conflicting stories of Dian and what went down with Barker. She decided to do Playboy. She claims Bob was fine with it (this was after he stopped fucking her). He claims he was against it. I tend to believe Dian. Bob was fine with Janice and Anitra doing nudity around the time they joined the show in the early 70s. I think even Mark Goodson claimed Bob was fine with it too, but there was an enormous backlash against her. Janice and Holly weren’t even on speaking terms with Dian for about 10 years prior to her leaving. Dian ultimately quit due to the affair ending and the flack she received doing the Playboy pictorials.

by Anonymousreply 129August 27, 2023 7:42 PM

Another example of Barkers perverted ways the public knew little about.

by Anonymousreply 130August 27, 2023 7:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 134August 27, 2023 8:13 PM

R94 One thing I truly fucking hated during the "One Bid" were contestants who took so fucking long to give a damn bid.

by Anonymousreply 135August 27, 2023 8:17 PM

R94 There's nothing wrong with the $1 more bid. imo. .. And due to the way they rotate how the bidding starts, every contestant is given the chance to do that, if they think it's something that might get them up on stage for more play.

What's more problematic to me is that a contestant can't go over the actual price. You can have someone who's over by one measly dollar losing to someone who's thousands of dollars under. Yeah, those are the rules; just like the ability to bid $1 more is.

by Anonymousreply 136August 27, 2023 9:19 PM

[quote] What's more problematic to me is that a contestant can't go over the actual price.

This rule was enacted just so that people don't have to bust their brains, doing both addition and subtraction, to see who got closer. It would be a more fair way to run this stupid game show, though.

R13, it’s Dicker and Dicker of Beverly Hills.

Bidders not going over the retail price is a holdover from the original version of the show, which was played auction style. Players started low, then bid increasingly higher or froze if they thought they were close enough. A bidder who went over lost automatically, just as an auction bidder "lost" if they paid more than the item was worth. Just a nod to tradition, and something familiar for people watching the very different Barker version.

If you've never seen it, check out the first few minutes of the link just to see how the original was played. First round starts around 3:00.

“

”

WTF? That’s not how an auction works. The bidder determines the “worth” for himself, with his bid! Christ almighty.

by Anonymousreply 148August 28, 2023 1:31 AM

R147 That made me laugh out loud.

by Anonymousreply 149August 28, 2023 3:13 AM

That's why I put "lost" in quote marks, R148. Any item is worth what the purchaser pays for it in their eyes. When you use the concept of an auction as a game, which is what we were talking about, there are winners and losers. Sorry to have triggered you.

I thought Dian was so pretty. But Holly was my favorite.

[quote] Gay actor Mike Doyle just posted a clip from the episode of TPIR he was on in memory of Bob.

Reminds me that Russell Todd was on the TPIR as well. Video of him and his (male) crew in the audience used to be around, but I can only find this still photo of him when he graduated to playing on stage.

R152 My mom told me that she recalled Lou Ferrigno being a contestant on the show but I've never seen a clip of him yet.

Have any other celebs been on the show with Bob as the host?

I just did a Lou F. search & this is the only thing that popped up but my mom swears he was up on stage as a player in the 1980s & nearly broke the wheel. He didn't win his game & didn't make it to the final either.

The premiere: bid on the Chevy Vega
the price starts with a 2! If you don’t make it on stage you’ll still receive a Max Factor gift of the beautiful new fragrance “Aquarius.”

Bob hadn’t quite worked out the kinks. The audience did not know to “act.” Anitra was in full fuck me mode.

Yes seeing that, in 1972 that was an exceptionally impressive looking lady. That style should return.

Bob Barker's cause of death has been revealed as a result of Alzheimer's disease, TMZ has learned.

According to his death certificate, obtained by TMZ, the 99-year-old 'Price Is Right' icon suffered from Alzheimer's, something he's never addressed publicly before. It's unclear exactly how long Bob battled the disease, but the docs say his death came "years" after his Alzheimer's began.

You'll recall, Bob also suffered multiple falls over the years -- he had minor battles with skin cancer, and took 2 trips to the hospital for issues with his back in 2018.

For those unaware, Bob -- who has been a vegetarian for over 4 decades -- teamed up with PETA back in 2013 to highlight the benefits of the diet, saying giving up meat can help prevent the onset of the brain disorder.

TMZ broke the story, Bob's rep told us he died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26 ... and his passing has been met with an outpour of love across the globe.

CBS thanked Bob for "making countless people's dreams come true" for decades on "The Price Is Right" ... and PETA said his longtime involvement with the org cemented him as "a national animal rights treasure."

A majority of Bob's estate is to be divvied up and donated to over 40 different animal rights organizations and military nonprofits -- still giving back to the community, even in death.

Anyway...

I hope his death gives his victims some closure.

Another lazyass who couldn't stick around until he turned 100, just like his fellow animal lover Betty White.
