I know Rogan and his guests are problematic but I think they may have a point? I've always thought the true numbers of LGBT in society are probably around 5%.
Joe Rogan questions the number of LGBT individuals

Nah. Gays + Lesbians + Bisexuals make up at least 7% and probably 10% of the population.
Anecdotal evidence (which isn't scientific), when I first started working out of college in the late 80s, I worked at a tech company (before tech was cool). The buildings were laid out so that there were ten offices per hallway, each office held one software engineer -- not exactly a profession known to be a magnet for gay people.
After working there for a couple of years and getting comfortable enough to know people and make connections and such, I realized that, coincidentally, there was exactly one gay person in each hallway. That's literally one in ten people I worked with being gay.
The percentage was MUCH higher in the tech support area, but for software developers (a total nerd fest in the 80s), it was exactly 10%.

20% is huge stretch. You literally have to include every straight person who had at least one same sex experience to get anywhere close to that number.

When they stopped persecuting Left handed people in schools (remember those Nuns going around WHACKING any kid trying to write with the 'wrong' hand with a ruler??), the reported number of left handed people shot up... and then leveled off. It's not that there were more left handed people. It's just that when people were free to be themselves and not hide, more were reported.
It's the same thing here. Gen-Z doesn't have the same stigma against LGBT+ people that every generation before them had. So I guess when you add up all the gays + lesbians + bisexuals + nonbinary + trans + gender-non-conforming people, it's going to be pretty much something like 10-20% of the population.

When you are allowed to keep adding letters to the LGBT alphabet you can annex as much of the population as you please

Graph that includes the above graph, along with one showing self-identification of generations as LGBT+
It's not "skyrocketing"... it's just returning to normal after having been oppressed/repressed for generations.

That's why I hate all this "queer" identity bullshit. Just because you're a hipster douchebag, doesn't mean you're not still cis and straight. But, of course, those things aren't cool now, so kids have to "identify" as something else.

Usually it’s a misreading of headlines that are dealing with the current gallop survey.
7.1% of all Americans are GLBT according to Gallup. Slightly higher than other sources but not by a lot.
The Z generation had a big up tic in numbers .
But that up tic was all about people claiming a bi experience. A slight rise for lesbians and trans as well no up tic within that Z generation that self identify as gay men. Gay males remained steady.
