Prednisone

Taking this for the first time ever, and wow. I'm just on 20mg and this is quite a ride. How do you people who take high doses cope?

by Anonymousreply 25August 25, 2023 8:43 AM

Which ailment are you taking it for OP?

by Anonymousreply 1August 23, 2023 8:36 AM

I had Lyme disease, and took it until it subsided. My hands would swell terribly. Made me somewhat irritable.

by Anonymousreply 2August 23, 2023 8:41 AM

I got some major insect bites and the doctor out me on this and powerful antihistamines.

by Anonymousreply 3August 23, 2023 8:49 AM

How fat did it make you? Everyone I know who has been on it for any length of time swelled up dramatically.

by Anonymousreply 4August 23, 2023 9:10 AM

There is a terrible withdrawal situation OP. Good luck.

by Anonymousreply 5August 23, 2023 10:24 AM

I took it and it did nothing for me

At the highest level, 60 mg, which I've been prescribed thee times in my life for three different ailments, the energy it gives you, and the way it kicks you butt and makes you move, and the insomnia and inexplicable lack of fatigue that comes with it was only paralleled for me by the use of methamphetamine. But then again I only ever eat/ate meth (didn't snort, plug, IV or smoke it) and I got zero euphoria from good meth (which sent my friends spinning), and this observation made me think that I had undiagnosed adult ADHD and the TBI that may have led to late onset hyperactivity turned out to be one of the three times I was prescribed 60 mg prednisone for months.

I don't remember the specifics about the withdrawal but I remember sleeping 12 hours a day for months, and when you take it for a long time you need to taper, taper, taper, because your body gets lazy and stops metabolizing its own corticosteroids.

I was on high doses for extended periods during much of my childhood. It wasn't fun. Besides all the usual side effects, there were fears it would stunt my growth (which was monitored and ultimately fine). A few times I picked up infections and recovery took longer than usual.

Like R7, I slept excessively once insomnia wasn't a factor. My weight went back to normal quickly. For some people it takes up to a year. As an adult, the nooks and crannies of my house are never cleaner than when I'm back on (shorter-term) steroids.

by Anonymousreply 8August 23, 2023 12:07 PM

I had to be on steroids following brain surgery. I could.not.sleep!

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2023 12:13 PM

Careful babe, you gonna kill someone!

by Anonymousreply 10August 23, 2023 12:14 PM

The worst side effect is you will always be hungry. Hang in there!

by Anonymousreply 11August 23, 2023 12:22 PM

I took it when I got bronchitis and I had no adverse reactions. Of course I followed the directions.

by Anonymousreply 12August 23, 2023 12:26 PM

I’ve taken the 7-day dose a few times which tapers down so you don’t have withdrawal. I’ve never felt more clearheaded and energetic in my life. That shit felt magical. I understand why people abuse it.

by Anonymousreply 13August 23, 2023 12:37 PM

High dose takers may not cope, and instead turn into raging bitches.

by Anonymousreply 14August 23, 2023 1:02 PM

It's really bad for your bones. Take calcium - lots of it.

by Anonymousreply 15August 23, 2023 6:44 PM

It wipes out your immune system at higher doses.

by Anonymousreply 16August 23, 2023 6:46 PM

Intense sweating, irritability, increased appetite, high blood pressure, stomach ulcer flares, those are my side effects. I’m on 30 mg daily for 2 weeks followed by a 2 week taper down of 5 mg.

by Anonymousreply 17August 23, 2023 6:49 PM

I took the 7 day version and gradually tapered off. Seems like I get respiratory infections once a year requiring prednisone.

by Anonymousreply 18August 23, 2023 7:26 PM

OP = Ivy from Smash

by Anonymousreply 19August 23, 2023 8:02 PM

Let your pharmacist or doctor know about the side effects....those seem extreme.

by Anonymousreply 20August 23, 2023 8:41 PM

I know someone who goes manic on that shit. It's not to be trifled with.

by Anonymousreply 21August 23, 2023 11:38 PM

Prednisone can’t you be true?

by Anonymousreply 22August 24, 2023 12:35 AM

I drank wine and had the worst headache I ever experienced. I had a weird reaction twice—once I had to be wheeled out on a stretcher from work, which was a huge embarrassment. I couldn’t hold my head up and was mumbling about hot dogs of all things. The medics were hot but thought I was nuts.

You must taper it or you’ll probably get sick.

I was also more aggressive. This was the last resort for me to get rid of a sinus infection I had for almost a year. Thank god for my elderly, persistent doctor who saved me.

by Anonymousreply 23August 24, 2023 12:49 AM

Allergy suffer here, Assume you will gain a minimum of 10 pounds, you can't eat enough.

by Anonymousreply 24August 24, 2023 3:25 AM

Last day of 20 mg for 5 days with no wind-down. Canceled all plans for the weekend in case the withdrawal is bad. Yesterday was the worst. Alternately amped and exhausted all afternoon.
