"Greening Out" from smoking weed?
I never heard anyone mention this back in the '80s or '90s. Never even heard the term. Never happened to me or anyone I knew. Then suddenly it became a thing on the Internet a few years ago.
Why is this happening now? Is it because these Millennial people are lightweights who can't handle their weed?

Weed has a lot more THC in it today. It's far more potent than in the past.

The weed is today is much stronger than in years past. High levels of THC in the brain repeatedly day after day does not bode well.

Why are these people smoking it so much then? Don't need to do it all day everyday.

What R5 said, plus edibles take a long time to kick in. A lot of people take one or two edibles, and then after 25 minutes when they aren't feeling anything, they take two or three or four more when they should have stuck with just one or two and waited 45-60 minutes for that ONE to kick in. Twenty minutes after taking all the extra edibles, the first one finally kicks in, followed soon after by the rest, and then the person starts tripping balls.

The strongest weed I have ever smoked in my life was some Maui Wowee, this was probably almost 50 years ago. It made me throw up it was so strong. I've smoked lots of good pot in the years since. I smoke good pot now, but nothing like that Hawaiian years ago.

I have a prescription-- I usually only take my dose at night (25mg), but sometimes on the weekend I will have a 5mg every few hours. My sleep has improved tremendously. I don't wake up in an existential crisis five nights a week anymore. I don't think that's good for one's brain or overall health, either. I must have been chronically sleep deprived, because my mood is much better the following day.
Still, I've been going at this rate for about 8 months now, and it is very expensive, and I will admit that my working memory is not what it should be. I would like to dial it back at night, and maybe not have to use it every night. That night demon/anxiety is something else, though.

My coworker's 20-year-old daughter has been hospitalized twice for cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome in the past couple of years. She was throwing up for ten days straight.
I never heard of any single person in my peer group ever throwing up after getting high, not even once, ever, in the 80s/90s. And I'm talking wake and bakers.
What's that all about?

"Cannabis is involved in roughly 50% of psychosis, schizophreniform psychosis, and schizophrenia cases. Likewise, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse Cannabis Research Report, individuals smoking high potency marijuana daily may be five times more likely to develop psychosis than their non-smoking counterparts."

Weed is so much more potent now than in was in the 90s, 80s or worse the 70's. The fact that cultivation is so rampant has cause a market saturated with strong weed.

Gee, I wonder if weed is much stronger today than in the 70s and 80s. I wish someone could tell us! :D
But seriously, why do they make it so strong? I was never much of a pot smoker, but you see people in movies, both old and new, smoking a joint like it's a cigarette. Shouldn't you really be taking just a couple of hits and then putting it away?

Some people, including me, just can't handle marijuana. I smoked it in my teens and 20s.
For me, the effects were a crap shoot. The most enjoyable highs involved munchies and food. The worst "highs" involved extreme paranoia. Even the good highs had an element of paranoia.
I consider some MJ almost a hallucinogenic. As teens, I smoked some backyard-grown weed with my neighbors and we all remember that it was a semi-hallucinogenic experience.

My self care during lockdown was spinning records and smoking weed. I still procured it thru channels not legal. The dispensary stuff make me feel like I’m at AutoZone trying to buy an air filter. “You should try the vanilla gorilla wedding cake.” Just get me high, bitch.

R15, I’m R12, a moderately heavy user. I have never gotten sick, but my husband, who very rarely uses has gotten sick twice— once at a party where he passed out afterward (I had never heard of such a thing), and another time at home.
The last time, he took a whole 10mg when he was supposed to have only taken half. Every was fine, he was lying in bed with his headphones watching a show on his phone, when he suddenly sprung up and sprinted across the house— but he was about four feet short of the bathroom door when he vomited with a great deal of force.
It seems to be a never-user or rarely-user phenomenon, something that happens to people with little to no tolerance. I know the dispensary has a FAQ that mentions this as a potential side effect to some who overdo it.

I recently started edibles to help me sleep. I used to smoke when I was a teen but it made me paranoid or "dumb" and sleepy. I quit around 20.
I'm now 59 and the first edible I took said take one. It didn't help me sleep. I was edgy and almost hallucinating. I've since cut it down to a quarter and sleep well. I can totally see how this stuff can be bad.

In the 80's you'd get plenty of nasty comments for smoking weed at a concert. There was a period when it was definitely out of fashion and associated with dullwitted hippies.
Also, frankly, it does dull the senses and the fools I know who haven't quit act like zombies.

Not sure how my tolerance is so high (I've been mostly doing edibles for the past 6 years. Prior to that I smoked maaaaaayybe 5 times in my entire life. Oh, and I'm 45 and look 45). I can take 300-500mg at a time without being all wonky. I started to help me quit drinking but I'm spending way more money on it than booze for less of an effect.

R26 Mushrooms and psilocybin is legal in my county in CA... legal in the whole state of Oregon. Psychedelics, especially as a form of therapy, will be used more and more as we move into a world of more mental illness, more digital-derived isolation and depression. Psychedelics, used properly, not just to dance to stupid IDM or seek a machine-elves escape from what you can't escape... it's absolutely a good thing. And there will be collateral damage - as we try to respond to angry tribalism, hollowed-out souls, and life on a dying planet.
It isn't just that weed is stronger - it's carefully grown now for different effects (indica to plant you in the sofa for 12 hours), form ("hash", moon rocks, dabs, tincture), and method of ingestion (through the liver, not the lungs). It can, and is, abused - too much, too soon (too high, too fast.... I saw the whole of the moon) - and is much, much less of a problem than alcohol, which hurts the internal organs.
As a man over 70, I no longer have the right to all these psychic toys: but I do CBD full spectrum with enough THC to spark the good stuff, and it helps me sleep, keeps my joints and muscles less inflamed, diffuse old-fart anxiety: plant-based relief. A gift from the gods to make human life more meaningful and help the body be more comfortable.

I’ve been hearing, “The weed is so much stronger these days” since 1987. Thank goodness it has gotten stronger and more reliable.
Just like alcoholics and booze, there are people who should not toke. Weed works much differently for our folks dealing with schizophrenia and/or other mood disorders. That post-use boomerang of anxiety seems to hit them faster and then come back for more.

Right?
I don't have a gigantic tolerance myself. When I have some high potency flower I just take one bong hit and wait at least half an hour before taking another one. No issues with being too high and you're also smoking less since you need less. It's just not a problem.
