COVID was absolutely the reason WSS flopped because it was marketed toward older audiences at the holiday season and the older audiences never returned to the theaters after COVID. Everything marketed as prestige during the October-December window post-COVID has flopped. Tár, Fablemans, Banshees of Inisherin. The reason is that Netflix has trained audiences to see these films at home (Irishman, Mank, Roma, The Power of the Dog.)

The reason TPOTD lost in every category but Director at the Oscars was industry hatred of Netflix.

The film was NOT just marketed at older people, especially not with it's "woke" reimaging. If anything a reimagined more progresive take on a classic the older people already knew was probably not the best way to reel older people in. Millenial/Z-ers were just not interested, they either had never heard of WSS or had because they already saw the original and saw no reason to see it again. Also, musicals are usually a bust, especially with younger crowds, just look at "In the heights" of the same year. You can still launch a gonzo scifi art picture (Everything Everywhere, $141 ww, March opening) or a talky drama about a WWII scientist (Oppenheimer) but you cannot do it as a fall prestige picture. Those films were "Mirror, Mirror", with Julia Roberts as the Wicket Queen, and "Snow White and the Huntsman", with Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart. "MM" had a bit of camp value, mostly due to the costume designer, but was pretty terrible overall. I rather liked "SWatH", it was very atmospheric and Theron was awesome, even if Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth were not.

The sequel to "SWatH" was the one with Blunt and Chastain joining Hemsworth, it was godawful. I forget what it was called.
