Mama's Family episode "Rashomama" is a classic

Even if Bubba Harper's hot bulge is nowhere in sight...

It's still one of the funnier episodes, though I generally enjoy the later episodes with hot Bubba more than the earlier season episodes.

"Come here, look at me. Are you in there?"

These things have got more spots than a windshield in Alabama.

Where did they (the spots on the jelly jars) go?

Spot heaven, Mama.

by Anonymousreply 1August 20, 2023 7:43 PM

"Oh stuff it, Eunice."

by Anonymousreply 2August 20, 2023 7:47 PM

Take care Eunice next time you might not be so lucky…

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2023 7:48 PM

Just the title of the episode "Rashomama," was classic.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2023 8:01 PM

My favorite episodes (yes, I know I have no life) are the ones like this where the cast gets to play different versions of themselves. Other favorites are the one where they're all dreaming about being married, and Iola has turned into Naomi (and vice versa) and the "film noir" episode where everyone is cast as a 1940s detective movie archetype.

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2023 8:05 PM

"Well, what the..."

oooh a group rub

by Anonymousreply 8August 20, 2023 8:42 PM

That episode had 4 writers and 2 directors!

Didn't Dorothy Lyman just transfer her character from All My Children over to Mama's Family? Is she a one-trick pony?

by Anonymousreply 9August 20, 2023 8:49 PM

What was it, a rear ender?

I think a weakness (or possibly strength considering your belief in the concept) is that we never get a definitive sequence. I think it's fair to believe that Eunice and Ellen were the ones who accidentally hit Mama with the pot, and I do think Naomi's version is probably closest to the truth. But part of the fun of these sitcom takes on Rashomon is that we finally see what actually happened.

by Anonymousreply 10August 20, 2023 9:00 PM

A lot of the time when I say “for fuck’s sakes” in my head, I catch myself doing it in Mama’s voice.

by Anonymousreply 11August 20, 2023 9:15 PM

^ that's funny - sometimes when I find myself staring at a man's big sexy bulge, I'm thinking about Bubba Harper

by Anonymousreply 12August 20, 2023 9:43 PM

Did Vicki Lawrence also wear yellow face?

by Anonymousreply 13August 20, 2023 10:24 PM

^ she wore gray face...she pretended to be older than she actually was

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2023 9:40 AM

After appearing as Eunice Higgins in this episode, Carol Burnett never played the character again.

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2023 10:42 AM

Burnett came back and did an unseen cameo on the the mamas birthday episode when she called her towards the end of the show to wish/sing her happy birthday.

I think she was supposed to be in more shows after rashomama but at that point Carol was divorcing Joe Hamilton who was also EP of the show and their split was getting ugly. I think Betty White ended up doing more episodes that season than she was initially scheduled for.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2023 12:05 PM

I think it's time for Carol and Vicki to reboot Mama's Family....

with Bubba's bulge of course

by Anonymousreply 17August 21, 2023 1:54 PM

Everyone is still alive, except Vint.

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2023 2:02 PM

R16 I think that was a Burnett impersonator.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2023 2:04 PM

I'd love a reboot.

Have Mama, Naomi & Eunice in the house with Iola still the neighbor.

by Anonymousreply 20August 21, 2023 2:11 PM

^ that was a voice impersonator who did Eunice's voice on the telephone...

But Bubba's bulge was ALL real...what a body!

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2023 2:13 PM

[quote]"Come here, look at me. Are you in there?"

R23, I was talking about the superior version of Mama's Family (The Iola and bulge years), not that NBC version.

by Anonymousreply 25August 21, 2023 2:50 PM

[quote]I was talking about the superior version of Mama's Family (The Iola and bulge years), not that NBC version.

That's a perfect name for the reboot "The Iola and Bubba's Bulge Show"!

(Although I'd prefer to give Bubba's big bulge top billing.}

by Anonymousreply 26August 21, 2023 3:17 PM

Nope it was Brunetts voice on the “Mamas Voice” episode.

Carol and Vicki had a falling out over the syndicated version of mamas family. Vicki signed on with Joe Hamilton to do the syndicated show and not long after Carol called and asked Vicki if she wanted to do a syndicated sketch show just focusing on the family. Vicki told Carol she signed with Hamilton and carols was furious and didn’t speak to her for a few years.

by Anonymousreply 27August 21, 2023 7:52 PM

Christmas carols

by Anonymousreply 28August 21, 2023 8:04 PM

I always thought it was wrong of Carol to get mad at Vicki for signing on with Joe or for putting Vicki in the middle of all that in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 29August 21, 2023 8:07 PM

Thelma: Where in blue blazes have you been?

by Anonymousreply 34August 21, 2023 10:51 PM

It should have been a two part episode with the second having Vint's version and the correct version with Mama. Iola hadn't been introduced yet but it would have been funny to see her take on it.

by Anonymousreply 35August 22, 2023 12:49 AM

The chili episode was a classic too.

by Anonymousreply 36August 22, 2023 12:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 37August 22, 2023 1:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2023 2:48 PM

[quote]Here's a preview of the "Soup to Nuts", featuring a young Bubba...before he started wearing the tight jeans that showed off his smokin' hot body

I often wonder if there was a meeting in the producers' office where it was decided that they were going to tighten his jeans and restyle his hair. I just wonder how that conversation gets started and who is the first to bring it up.

And doesn't Bubba have a brother named Billie Joe?

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2023 3:56 PM

There was a Rashomon-type episode of All in the Family involving a black man and a knife. A repair man and his black apprentice work on the Bunker's refrigerator. Gloria did not witness anything.

Archie claimed that the black man had a huge switchblade or hunting knife (I forgot). Mike claimed the black man had no knife at all.

Edith produced the knife because the black apprentice had forgotten to take it when he exited the Bunkers' house. It turned out to be a small pen or pocket knife. (The black man had used it to peel an apple.)

Gloria took to task both Archie and Mike for giving grossly exaggerated / inaccurate accounts of what happened.

by Anonymousreply 44August 22, 2023 4:28 PM

[quote]And doesn't Bubba have a brother named Billie Joe?

MF is different from The Family.

Otherwise we'd have heard of Bubba's brother, Ellen's two daughters, Phillip, etc...

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2023 5:58 PM

Ellen: Mama, either stop volunteering to make the jam or invest in an air conditioner to cool off this swamp.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2023 7:07 PM

Noami: I don’t know when I’ve had so much fun. I’ve never done anything like this before.

Eunice: It’s about the only thing you haven’t done before.

by Anonymousreply 47August 22, 2023 7:08 PM

Eunice: What the hell is the matter with you? You been sniffing those gooseberries?

by Anonymousreply 48August 22, 2023 7:26 PM

Not from this episode but one of my favorite quotes:

Mama: "Well, I bet the neighbors are just loving this!"

by Anonymousreply 49August 22, 2023 7:43 PM

Mama: Next time I make jam with you bruisers I'm going to wear a football helmet.

by Anonymousreply 50August 22, 2023 7:51 PM

Maude also had a Rashomon episode. It was concerning Maude's broken punchbowl. We find out that Mrs. Naugatuck broke it in a drunken gesture but both Arthur and Vivian told stories that minimized their own fears, Vivian for being rejected by Lyle Waggoner and Arthur for being scared of Lyle Waggoner.

by Anonymousreply 51August 22, 2023 7:51 PM

Why did Mama say to Eunice, "You're my third born..."

Eunice was clearly the middle child and the second-born - younger than Ellen and older than Vint.

by Anonymousreply 52August 22, 2023 7:55 PM

[quote]Vivian for being rejected by Lyle Waggoner and Arthur for being scared of Lyle Waggoner.

Interesting that Rue also dreamed and lusted after Lyle Waggoner as her character Blanche Devereaux on "The Golden Girls".

by Anonymousreply 54August 23, 2023 9:15 AM

One of my favorite quotes is from the "The Wedding" Eunice shows up before the wedding with a plate of chili dogs.

Mama: Chili dogs ... at a wedding?

Eunice: Mama, don't you ever read? Chili dogs are all the rage in Hollywood. Merv Griffin threw a party and Pia Zadora put away six of these suckers.

by Anonymousreply 55August 23, 2023 9:20 AM

I love this from the episode "Mama Gets a Job" - Mama was being questioned by Job Interviewer

Job Interviewer (JI): Are you married?

Mama: No, I'm widowed.

JI: I'm sorry.

Mama: So is he.

JI: Did you graduate from college?

Mama: No.

JI: High School?

Mama: No

JI: But you did complete Grade School.

Mama: Well, boy, this is sure Pick on Thelma Harper Day, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 56August 23, 2023 10:13 AM

Job Counselor: Do you know how to answer a phone?

Mama: No, usually when it rings I just run around in little circles yelling "What'll I do, What'll I do!"

by Anonymousreply 57August 23, 2023 10:25 AM

Travel Agency Customers: We're going to Tahiti!

Mama: Tahiti?! Well you wouldn't know it by the look of the two of you that you had a nickel to your name!

by Anonymousreply 58August 23, 2023 10:48 AM

I love the "spot heaven" line too.

Ellen: Now let's just take these dishcloths and clean up those jars.

Eunice: There is nothing wrong with those jars.

Naomi: Now how does this think work? I've never dried a dry jar before.

Eunice: I think you've stepped off one curb too many.

Mama: Hey looky everybody, look: if you use a dish towel these spots rub right off.

Mama looks up in the air in wonder: Mama: Where did they go?

Ellen: Spot heaven Mama.

by Anonymousreply 59August 23, 2023 10:57 AM

^ Eunice: (about Mama) If that old lady gets any worse we're going to have to bring out the whoopee squad.

by Anonymousreply 60August 23, 2023 11:08 AM

Ellen: Did you get the sugar Naomi?

Naomi: Yea. (to Eunice) Hand this over to Ellen.

Eunice: You birdbrain. This is powdered sugar!

Naomi: Was I supposed to buy the liquid?

by Anonymousreply 61August 23, 2023 11:20 AM

Naomi: Oh it is so hot in this kitchen. (looking down her dressI can practically hear those beads of sweat popping out all over me.

Mama: That's the berries,you tramp!

by Anonymousreply 62August 23, 2023 11:31 AM

Naomi looked more "trampy" with the curly hair in the syndicated version than she did with the straight hair in the network epsiodes.

by Anonymousreply 63August 23, 2023 11:32 AM

Mama: Naomi, did you remember to buy the sugar?

Naomi: Oh I never buy sugar. (pours a bunch of sugar packets out of her purse)

Eunice: Well Naomi, you unpredictable little scamp. What is all that?

Naomi: Well this is my sugar packet collection. I pick them up in motels. Each and every one has a different name on it.

Ellen picks one up. Ellen: Arthur's hideaway and laudaret. You tumble,we dry?

Naomi: Yea.

Mama: Well that is disgusting. I can't take jam to a church bizarre made with x-rated sugar!

by Anonymousreply 64August 23, 2023 11:39 AM

The jam starts bubbling: Naomi: I'll get the doorbell.

Eunice: That's the berries you nitwit!

by Anonymousreply 65August 23, 2023 12:01 PM

Mama: Ahhh, Betty, hand me that pot.

Eunice and Ellen both grab it.

Eunice: She said Baby...

Mama discovers Bubba is running his OnlyFans account out of her basement in her house on Old Decatur Road.

Although still caring for her elderly mother, Iola Boylen has agreed to help Bubba, so she can earn money to take a cruise with Mama on the luxurious Dixieland Belle Mississippi River cruise.

by Anonymousreply 98August 24, 2023 2:54 PM

On a serious note, a lot of people don't consider Mama's Family a good sitcom, but it was consistently #1 in the syndication ratings and only ended because they reached the magic # of 100 episodes. The show should have had, at least, a 6th and final season to wrap everything up.

Also, Mama's Family correctly captured a certain type of rural life, that a lot of people don't see or understand just in a "sitcomy" way.

by Anonymousreply 99August 24, 2023 3:22 PM

Well said, R99

by Anonymousreply 100August 24, 2023 4:58 PM

One of my favorite episodes was the flashback where they revealed how Eunice got drunk and the two of them got into a huge fight in front of the Ladies Church League. The early scenes of Mama as a loving, caring, nurturing mother seemed very consistent as well as the bitterness she had to have felt with those horrible kids.

And to dovetail Rashomama, I think Mama really did feel closer to Naomi than her daughters. Naomi was very good hearted and extremely loyal to Mama and she knew that. After the Beauty Pageant episode (a classic), when Mama lost Naomi said very angrily "I thought you did real well Miz Harper until they slipped you that trick question." You could never imagine Ellen or Eunice saying anything like that.

DUKE REEEVES!!

by Anonymousreply 104August 24, 2023 6:13 PM

Some bloopers that made it to the screen included:

Naomi cracking up at Mama going off on the rest of the family for giving her grief as she works the breakfast counter alongside Bubba.

Vint is playing with making balloon animals and Mama pops one and the remains of the balloon land on her head. Vicki reacts to it by smiling and turning towards the camera, but Iola just keeps playing the scene out instead of stopping it.

Mama finally gets to spend some time alone and discovers that she really misses having everyone around. Vint and Naomi come home from a weekend at a cabin where they had to stay in because of terrible weather. They claim it was very romantic and they decide to extend that in the basement. Vint tells Naomi to "get the tuna" and you can see Vicki cracking up and turning away from the camera. Obviously an adlib that caught Vicki off guard.

BTW, to see Bubba at his bulgiest, watch the episode where Mama gets a job as a consumer advocate on the radio. Yikes!

Ellen marching with the Twirlettes is given the best advice that her Mama can give her: "Ellen, baby, don't do the cartwheel!"

[quote]Also when Vinton fixed the phone or doorbell and Thelma goes, "Vinton, remind me to kill you later."

I liked Ken Berry in his other roles, but I found him mostly annoying on "Mama's Family",

but I realize they had to make him goofy to make Mama more likeable...certainly more likeable than she was on The Carol Burnett Show or in the network version of the series.

I liked it when Vint had man-to-man talks with Bubba...

I never get tired of the episode with Liz Torres as the channeler.

Iola's momma discovers that she is allergic to the chicken fat that she has been using as lip gloss.

Mama's Gypsy Queen outranks Madam Rita who is only a Duchess. Madam Rita lets them all know that Queen Esmerelda is a GYPSY and she is not to be trusted!

SILENCE!!!!!

I think it was a shame that Aunt Fran was dead and gone by the time her great nephew Bubba got sprung from Juvenile Hall. You just know that she would have guided him into manhood with some expert cougar moves. Rue most certainly would have lusted after the tender, young hard bodied Alan Kayser. She had written about her seduction of her young Broadway co-star, Brad Davis, in one of her biographies a while back. Apparently, she lured him to her NYC abode and ravished the poor kid all over her back yard. They made so much noise that they raised the ire of her neighbors. Rue was married at least 7 times, so you know she loved the cock.

Some guest stars I really enjoyed on the show:

Yeardley Smith as "the Keek." Loved Mama speaking her brand of "Swedish" to the Keek at the dinner table.

Anne Raney never disappointed as Alberta Meechum. "You don't have to bite anything, Thelma!"

William Windom as the old "come with me to the cabin" boyfriend.

All of Mama's Girls doing that old tap dancing stuff that I love so much.

Dorothy Van (Aunt Effie) was a terrible actress and an even worse dancer, but she and her husband, JIm Evering, wrote some damned good episodes.

Carol Burnett got to strangle Gloria DeHaven at the Pepper Pot Playhouse rehearsals. Loved it.

"I Do, I Don't" - the one where they fantasize about being married. Iola acting like Naomi (and vice versa) is hysterical.

"Naomi's Identity Crisis" - Naomi has amnesia and Mama convinces her that she's the perfect Stepford wife.

BTW, does anyone else find LOGO unwatchable due to the incessant MyPillow commercials? They should be ashamed to air them. And why does MyPillow guy think it makes sense to advertise right after a gay-themed show, PSA, or commercial? (Not that he's in his right mind anyway.)

Iola - Pink

Naomi - Yellow

Thelma - Purple/Lavender

Vint - Mostly tan, with gray and brown

Bubba - Mostly greens/light blue (his had the most diversity)

I loved seeing Skeeter become a happy homemaker after getting bonked on the noggin by that swinging kitchen door. (That coffee is 10 minutes old!)

I loved seeing Iola teach the Harpers about the meaning of friendship after they sneakily attempted to sell off all of her crafts at the yard sale. Iola wasn't quite through eating yet. She requested a few more niblets of that corn and Mama obliged by putting about three of them on her plate.

Iola's romantic hay ride ended in tragedy when the wagon swerved to miss a possum in the road and Iola fell out of the back of the wagon.

"Shut up and sit down before I strangle you with that ugly dress!"

Ellen Harper Jackson and Eunice Harper Higgins are going at it in Mama's kitchen during the gooseberry jam making session. Eunice accuses Ellen of passing her by twice out on route 5 (in that air conditioned Cadillac Seville of hers) before Ellen lets her know:

"I didn't even see you and take my word.....I would know that dress anywhere!"

If it is true about Vicki asking for a spiffed up Alan then that would explain something that I have always noticed in certain "spiffed up Bubba" episodes. Mama is sometimes seen casting side glances directly at the Bubba Bulge. The more prominent the VPL, the more Mama finds reason to check it out. It always amused me that in that Skeeter as a happy home maker epi, Bubba holds his new huge aquarium right in front of his package. I can only imagine how all that water magnified the crotch in Mama's eyes.

by Anonymousreply 280September 2, 2023 3:38 PM

Mama was tamed a little in season 2, but she’s still a far cry from the relatively nice (but still fussy) Mama in the syndicated episodes. Also, Sonia had stopped smoking weed and became a normal, non-zombie person (the weed smoking was only implied).

by Anonymousreply 281September 2, 2023 3:45 PM

I had to stop watching the series. It's just stupid and unfunny. Roseanne and Married With Children were funny shows about white trashy people but this one, I just find it so boring. Vicki Lawrence isn't funny as Mama. She was 33-34 years old when the show started. She doesn't look like an elderly woman. Estelle Getty as Sophia on The Golden Girls was funny because she looked like she was 80 and her lines were funny. I just can't get into it.

by Anonymousreply 292September 4, 2023 2:02 PM

Mama's Family aired on NBC, debuting on January 22, 1983. After several timeslot changes and a subsequent drop in ratings, the network cancelled the series; the final episode of this two-season NBC incarnation of the series aired on April 7, 1984. NBC broadcast reruns until September 1985, which unexpectedly performed well in ratings.

by Anonymousreply 293September 4, 2023 5:58 PM

Two years after its cancellation, original series producer Joe Hamilton Productions (JHP) revived Mama's Family for new episodes in first-run syndication on local stations across the United States. The reincarnation, distributed by Lorimar-Telepictures, premiered on September 27, 1986.[2][3] The modified four-season series revival gained substantially higher ratings than its first incarnation, eventually becoming the highest-rated sitcom in first-run syndication, with its final episode airing on February 24, 1990.

I wonder if syndicated shows weren't eligible for Emmy Consideration or just weren't considered at all. Beverly Archer and Ken Berry should have received nominations, as well as the costuming department. There are also a handful of episodes that should have been nominated for writing.

by Anonymousreply 325September 7, 2023 1:28 AM

R325, let's not get carried away...

by Anonymousreply 326September 7, 2023 4:29 AM

Another excellent episode is the one with Iola meeting a new best friend at a cooking class. Arlene Madison, played by the late, outstanding character actress, Mary Pat Gleason, sweeps Iola off her feet with her sophistication. Mama pretends not to care, but her real feelings bubble up. Archer is so good in this episode, she makes your heart hurt for her after Arlene accuses Iola of "suffocating" her. Mama saves the day by convincing Iola that she and Arlene fought over her friendship. ("And I won!")

by Anonymousreply 327September 7, 2023 5:01 AM

Archer didn't have her big break until 1976 with the Nancy Walker Show but I think she would have been great in Lucy's Mame as Gooch.

by Anonymousreply 328September 7, 2023 5:16 AM

[quote][R325], let's not get carried away...

I stand by my statement.

Just based on the 1986 Emmy Nomination alone...

I love Golden Girls as much as the next DLer, but it was just as sitcomy as Mama's Family. And I would put up Beverly Archer's performances against Justine Bateman, Lisa Bonet, Julia Duffy, Estelle Getty, and Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Rhea Perlman (who won) any day.

I would also put up Ken Berry against Tom Poston, John Ratzenberger, Malcolm Jamal Warner, George Wendt, and John Larroquette (winner).

As for writing, The Golden Girls -A Little Romance won that year, which would have been tough to beat, but the Chili Episode could have easily beat all the others nominated that year.
