I saw Mary Poppins in London just before COVID lockdown, and out comes Petula Clark singing "Feed the Birds". I spontaneously burst into ugly tears because I had no idea she was in the cast and both she and the song were big parts of my childhood. I think that may have been the campest moment of my life.

R111, I just watched Peggy Dow as a double-dealin’ dame in Woman in Hiding staring Ida Lupino. (Currently on Criterion as part of a Gothic Noir series.) She was great! She retired shortly after this film when she landed an oil baron.
When I looked up the cast, I was stunned to see Peggy Dow will be turning 96 in a couple weeks. Then I wondered if she’d been added to this nonagenarian list.
Of course a gay was already on the job!
by Anonymous | reply 272 | March 3, 2024 1:23 PM |
For some reason as a kid watching old movies on TV I really liked Peggy Dow. I think because I was a little kid, I loved the one where she played a reincarnated horse, opposite Dick Powell. I don't remember the name. Then I saw her in Harvey, and a movie about the home front during the Korean war, called I Want You (with some bigger stars, Dorothy McGuire, Dana Andrews, Farley Granger). Years later I looked her up and was surprised her career was so short.

W. Michael Blumenthal, Jimmy Carter's Treasury Secretary, is not only alive at 99, but robust enough to be present, along with Steven Mnuchin, Robert Rubin, Henry Paulson, Lawrence Summers, Timothy Geithner & Jack Lew, at a traditional dinner gathering of former Treasury secretaries to welcome the new secretary, Scott Bessent, into the fraternity.
In a NYT article about the gathering, "Bessent was pressed over the strategy behind the tariffs and the impact that they would have on the economy, according to Mr. Blumenthal and other people familiar with the dinner." Blumenthal said "the mood was somber." He added, Bessent "didn’t just smile. There he is — he has to defend it." Blumenthal said "he wished Mr. Bessent luck in a job that is more complicated when 'what is best for country is different than what the president wants.'”
[quote] He added that traditionally the welcoming meals were light on policy discussion or advice from Treasury veterans.
[quote] This time was a very special occasion.

Speaking of nonagearians, I just found out one of my favorite teachers from high school passed away a few weeks ago at 99 - just two months shy of her 100th Birthday. She wasn't famous world-wde, but very well-known and respected in regional and national education groups for all she did for students in public schools for the forty years she taught. Her obit is listed with every award imaginable - she deserved them all.
I had her for US History in my junior year (1979-80) and she used to tell us back then that Jimmy Carter would go down in history books as one of the most generous and caring Presidents ever (she hated Reagan), and we wouldn't appreciate him until years after he left the WH (boy was she right). Back then, teachers could share their political beliefs, and she used to tell us she was a 'staunch, Jewish Liberal' and advised us students at 17 years old to vote Democrat all our lives. (This stuck with me, as I had so much respect for her and the education she gave me - and have always voted Democrat mainly because of her. Funny enough - there was a period of time from 1987 - 2010 where I would run into her frequently (I had a store and she became one of my customers and she remembered me). I always reminded her in our conversations, 'You made me a lifelong Democrat and I'm glad I listened to you.' She'd smile from ear to ear. When Obama was elected, she told me she was so happy to live long enough to see a Black man as President. She used to say, "Now if I can live long enough to see a woman President..." She almost did.

Yeah, r462, I appreciate that your teacher made a positive impression on you, but she stepped over a line that teachers have followed to a point that teaching and activism have blurred into a single entity, with the latter now often leading the former.
I had a similar experience with a very conservative teacher in high school. I hated listening to him drone on about his beliefs when I knew I was still forming mine, which were not heading in his direction at all.
Teachers imposing their political views on their students is a mistake. This isn’t their job, and while it may win admiration from one camp, it engenders resentment in others.
You hold your teacher in high esteem, but all I see is casual arrogance and misuse of the profession as a pulpit.
On another note, happy 90th birthday to Bobby Vinton!
