Your Favorite Midsomer Murders Episode

All the threads of the Australian woman poisoning her dinner guests with mushrooms made me want to revisit one of the greatest detective series of all time, Midsomer Murders. I've decided to start from the beginning and I've been contemplating what my favorite episode is.

Of course, my all time favorite is the first one, The Killings at Badger's Drift (1997). Nothing will ever top the insanity of the eccentric mother and son duo of Iris Rainbird and her son Denny. There's incestuous overtones as well as incest driving the main plot. No, I won't spoil it.

And then there are a few other episodes that stand out. The Black Book (2009), Beyond The Grave, (2000), Destroying Angel (2001) [which also happens to be the same plot of the Australian mushroom murder saga], A Talent for Life with Honor Blackman (2003), The Christmas Haunting (2013), Murder On St. Malley's Day (2002), The House In The Woods (2005), and I'm sure there are countless others that I have forgotten -- which is why I am starting to rewatch them all.

My favorite episodes are usually the earlier episodes as they're more quaint and eccentric just like the earlier episodes of Murder, She Wrote. However, there are gems in the later seasons as well. I cannot believe they are about to start airing season 24. This series has been on since 1997! My favorite Barnaby is definitely Tom Barnaby played by John Nettles but I also do have a soft spot for his "cousin", a younger replacement, John Barnaby played by Neil Dudgeon. There have also been 5 different detective sergeants: Sergeant Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey), Sergeant Dan Scott (John Hopkins), Detective Sergeant Ben Jones (Jason Hughes), Detective Sergeant Charlie Nelson (Gwilym Lee), and Sergeant Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix). Troy, Scott, and Jones have been my favorites.

John Nettles was 54 when the series started and 68 when Neil Dudgeon replaced him. Neil Dudgeon was 50 when he started and is now 62. I wonder how long before he will be replaced by a younger Barnaby if the series continues for a few more years. How long can it actually go on!? The writing and acting are still up to part so I hope it continues for a long time.

Anyway, what are your favorite episodes and why?

Joyces' hairdresser secretly hated her.

That hair was the real crime.

by Anonymousreply 2August 17, 2023 4:22 PM

R2, I thought her cooking was.

by Anonymousreply 3August 17, 2023 4:28 PM

I’ve caught a few shows here and there and wondered if the series was worth watching. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll start at the beginning.

Any overall favorite seasons?

by Anonymousreply 4August 17, 2023 4:41 PM

I binged the series in the early days of Netflix when they were the only streaming service. What a large selection of tv shows they had.

by Anonymousreply 5August 17, 2023 4:52 PM

R5 the first 5 seasons are my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 6August 17, 2023 4:54 PM

Season 1 was "beyond murderous& funny "and Episode #1 was brilliant.

I still want to retire to rural England, but do I live in Midsomer or St Mary Mead (and have Miss Jane Marple as my neighbor) so she can teach me how to grow an English garden& solve murder together.

by Anonymousreply 7August 17, 2023 5:09 PM

Midsomer was categorised as an entire county, which made the murder rate rather less extreme, though it must still greatly outdo counties like Wiltshire or Herefordshire.

by Anonymousreply 8August 17, 2023 5:20 PM

I'm with you, OP. That first episode, The Killings at Badger's Drift, was what drew me into the show, and that episode remains one of my all-time favorites for all the reasons you list. So many other great eps too, though, but that one definitely stands out because you almost always remember your first time.

by Anonymousreply 9August 17, 2023 6:30 PM

R9 did you watch the later episodes where the actors who play Iris Rainbird and her son also play her cousin and her son? It’s like they knew we wanted more.

by Anonymousreply 10August 17, 2023 7:09 PM

Watching the first episode now. Ms. Rainbird looks like Mrs. Doubtfire! I can’t unsee it, although I’m liking it so far.

by Anonymousreply 11August 18, 2023 5:50 AM

You know Denny Rainbird was a DLer.

by Anonymousreply 12August 18, 2023 8:36 AM

Oh gosh Jonathan Firth was gorgeous in the first episode, it was such a great pilot, I remember watching it with my mum as a kid and not quite getting it!

I loved lots of episodes, mostly the early ones:

Written In Blood: a cozy book club member gets murdered. Whacky characters, cross dressing, gay undertones

Death's Shadow: schoolboy secrets come back to haunt three men as someone takes revenge for a past mistake. Murder by decapitation, fire and arrow.

Strangler's Wood: Is a serial killer back in action and targeting young women, or is it a copycat?

Dead Man's Eleven: Lady of the manor bludgeoned to death at her husband's quarry. Who is trying to get even with the family? Includes a cricket subplot

Judgement Day: A 'best village's competition is overshadowed by murders. Special guest appearances by Orlando Bloom's bum and death by pitchfork

Market For Murder: Members of a women's investment group hide secrets. Who's got a screw loose and starts randomly bumping people off? "Bookie's daughter!"

Ring Out Your Dead: Local bellringers get bumped off to the theme of "Ding Dong Bell".

The Maid In Splendor: Was the first murder a case of mistaken identity? Locals up in arms about changes to the village pub

The Straw Woman: Pagan festivals, witchcraft, spontaneous human combustion and Dan Scott getting laid!

Blood Wedding: A maid of honour is killed after a wedding and sets off a series of murders to hide a family secret.

The Creeper: A cat burglar is on the loose and murders abound. They help knock Joyce down the stairs but she manages to survive.

The one about the hot rugby guys and their “physio”. The victim was found frozen solid in the cold storage recovery room thingy.

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2023 8:03 PM

They had many hot guys on the show over the years.

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2023 8:53 PM

R10 - YES! I recognized them instantly and was so pleased. I've seen the male actor in a number of other BBC crime dramas/mysteries as a side character, and it always makes me smile because he's so recognizable.

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2023 9:26 PM

PBS Passport holders may watch all but the most recent years.

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2023 9:28 PM

Midsomer Murders was my comfort watch through the Pandemic. Reading all of these comments is making me want to rewatch the series, which I shall do beginning this weekend. The show definitely makes me fantasize about moving to one of these cozy English villages/towns where murder and eccentric characters seem to be rampant. Even though I know that's not a realistic portrayal, I still want it to be!

by Anonymousreply 19August 18, 2023 9:30 PM

R13 did his homework!

R15 which episode is that? That’s one I don’t remember. Perhaps I’ve missed an episode. The horror!

Death Shadow is on right now in the local PBS. The one with the ministers who kills.

I’ve got A Picture of Innocence on in the background right now. Not one of my favorites but I’ll take it. MM is great background music.

One of my favorites is Dark Autumn. The ending bugs me, but I love the tiny village of Goodman’s Land, the Aunt Sally match, and the surrounding hills. “Bit of a fresh air freak.”

I was beyond delighted when I landed in a village in Yorkshire and found a sign on a tree on the green advertising the weekly hours for the visit from the fish and chips van.

Also love Market for Murder, but it’s so sad because all the victims are so decent. I blame the passive doctor. “I find it very shaming.”

Death’s Shadow is great. “I should have done it years ago!”

Love The Creeper! Mostly for Sid, the beautiful fox. And speaking of beautiful foxes 🦊, The Green Man is another atmospheric episode.

Music is fantastic in so many episodes.

Some of the sidekick detectives have been so attractive dressed in suits. Yum

by Anonymousreply 24August 19, 2023 1:42 AM

I’ve been watching it, with commercials, for free on Tubi.

by Anonymousreply 25August 19, 2023 3:09 AM

I want to pull Detective Dan Scott's pants down and fellate his truncheon, right in the middle of Aspern Tallow!

by Anonymousreply 26August 19, 2023 7:08 AM

Painted In Blood is on right now and I forgot the intricacies of it.

by Anonymousreply 27October 9, 2023 10:30 AM

Any that feature Cully.

by Anonymousreply 28October 9, 2023 11:12 AM

I was going to describe the one R15 and R22 mention. The younger deputy has a scene in a towel in a locker room and It gave me a boner.

by Anonymousreply 29October 9, 2023 1:03 PM

I think this is Midsomer but honestly, we blow through the English mystery shows like butter, so I may be wrong: the episode where once a year, men from an adjoining village invade another and kidnap/rape the wives. This time, murder is involved.

We rewatch the series out of order now and I’ve forgotten how little I liked Joyce’s character - no reason, she just seemed bland. Julie is annoying in her own way: works full time running a school yet still has time to constantly chair the various fetes. And why has their daughter (Betty?) completely gone missing?

Still, we love it and yes, I also Imagine living in a flower- and murder-filled village.

by Anonymousreply 30October 9, 2023 1:20 PM

There was one episode where they show his sidekick (the second one, I think) in the shower.. full frontal!!

The show caught some flack for it's lack of visible minorities and then more when the producer (or director?) said that was because he wanted to show the 'real Britain'. He was quickly replaced and Midsomer became much more diverse.

by Anonymousreply 31October 9, 2023 2:17 PM

[quote]Judgement Day: A 'best village's competition is overshadowed by murders. Special guest appearances by Orlando Bloom's bum and death by pitchfork

Well done, R13

I came to post about "Judgment Day" with Orlando Bloom at the peak of his beauty. It's also a well-done episode, and I like the other episodes you cited too.

by Anonymousreply 32October 9, 2023 2:28 PM

^ but why does Joyce Barnaby have to poke her nose in every episode?

A villager is selected to be a guest judge of the Prettyist Village contest...and here's Joyce.

Barnaby and Troy stop to chat with some prostitutes...and here's Joyce.

And don't even get me started on that horrid Cully!

by Anonymousreply 33October 9, 2023 2:31 PM

The episode with Bloom also has a young Tobias Menzies as his thieving partner.

by Anonymousreply 34October 9, 2023 3:08 PM

Neil Dudgeon plays a gardener in a 2000 episode 11 years before he took the reign as the new Barnaby.

by Anonymousreply 35October 9, 2023 5:19 PM

R31 fuck off! If only he'd gone nude, he was dreamy!

R30, that episode is Night of the Stag. Creepy!!

by Anonymousreply 42October 11, 2023 1:07 AM

Happy to R41! I was the OP of the Joyce thread and she still gets in my nerves, especially in later episodes!

by Anonymousreply 43October 11, 2023 9:24 AM
