The preachers literally told people that God hated them for being disgusting sinners and was on the verge of smiting each of them down any minute. It's about the fact that when you argue over what words in the Bible mean, you're doing nothing but lending it underserved credence. Who cares what it says? One of the issues with Christianity is that it can be molded to fit whichever community it finds its way into, usually by the community itself over time. There are very few guidelines and rules and traditions when compared to other religions and even Catholicism, so things can be 'customized' to make the community feel good rather than make them follow rules. Basically, modern Christianity seems to tell parishoners what they want to hear vs what they maybe need to hear.

You cannot persuade them with logic, facts and reason and if you avoid talking about the Bible, specifically the version that they read, you miss your greatest opportunity to reach them where they live.
