200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time

From Chic to Skrillex, from Chicago house classics to festival rave anthems, from songs that filled the floor at the Loft and the Warehouse to ones that blew up on TikTok.

What do we mean by “dance songs”? Good question. In a sense, any song that ever got any one person moving in any perceptible direction is a dance song. The Beatles made great dance songs — as did Slayer. Nearly all the hip-hop and reggae ever made is great dance music. But to make our list of The 200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time, a song had to be part of “dance music culture.” It’s a more specific world, but an enormous one too, going back nearly fifty years and eternally evolving right up to today and into the future.

First time I've been impressed by RS in years. Very Good selection, wide ranging, and the article is well designed with links to all the songs.

by Anonymousreply 1August 13, 2023 6:28 AM

It’s a pretty respectable list. I’m shocked given how much RS caters to stan audiences on Twitter. I was expecting Gaga’s “Just Dance” or Taylor Swift’s “Message in a Bottle” to be #1.

by Anonymousreply 2August 13, 2023 7:16 AM

The list is immediately not valid when 'Last Dance' by Donna Summer is #200. Should be much, much higher on the list.

by Anonymousreply 3August 13, 2023 7:26 AM

Did you get to #1 R3?

by Anonymousreply 4August 13, 2023 7:30 AM

R4. Yes, I did. Donna Summer's 'Last Dance' (#200) and 'I Feel Love' (#1) should trade places

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2023 7:40 AM

Madonna's "Into the Groove" is #91. Glad it's on the list, but it should be in the top 10.

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2023 7:41 AM

New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle should be on the list.

Laura Branigan - "Gloria" isn't even on the list and should be in the Top Ten.

Blondie - Heart Of Glass isn't on the list but deserves to be in the top 100.

Diana Ross - The Boss

Not on the list but deserves to be in the Top Three.

I thought it was a pretty fair and balanced list for once from Rolling Stone.

The list is from 2022. It's a very well-rounded list considering it covers quite a large chunk of time.

by Anonymousreply 11August 13, 2023 7:58 AM

Cher - Believe

Not on the list. Should be in the Top 20.

New Order Blue Monday is in the right place.

I was actually surprised Madonna made the list 3 times.

by Anonymousreply 13August 13, 2023 8:02 AM

I wouldn't say Heart of Glass is a dance song R9. They were brilliant but they were pop/rock.

by Anonymousreply 14August 13, 2023 8:04 AM

Tina Turner is more rock but deserves a place on the list with her very danceable, 'The Best.'

by Anonymousreply 15August 13, 2023 8:11 AM

Oh, bullshit, R14.

Blondie and the Clash created dance-rock.

by Anonymousreply 16August 13, 2023 8:13 AM

Kind of kitschy, but ABBA and 'Dancing Queen' deserves a spot on the list

Black Box's Everybody Everybody picked over Ride On Time, one of the biggest hits in Europe of 1989?

by Anonymousreply 18August 13, 2023 8:16 AM

Chic deserved to be the top 5, but not Good Times. All the Chic-related choices are so lazy.

The fact that Le Freak is down in the 80s is nuts—it sold seven million copies, went to #1 three separate times, and presaged Good Times, hip-hop, Bowie's Let's Dance. It's the Chic track that led to everything.

by Anonymousreply 19August 13, 2023 8:18 AM

Come on, Cyndi Lauper isn't even on the list but deserves a spot in the Top 20

The journalists picking the list of clearly gone for more obscure Techno dance, Electro dance, soul dance, disco over out and out pop dance classics.

by Anonymousreply 26August 13, 2023 8:51 AM

"All time"??? Are they really sure none of those flute and lute combos from the 1450s aren't better?

All kidding aside, 100 years ago the Charleston and it's song were all the rage. 100 years later most people recognize the song and know about the dance. I'd say it belongs on the list. Same with 'Let's do the Twist' (60 years ago)

by Anonymousreply 27August 13, 2023 9:45 AM

They didn't include Turkey Lurkey TIme?

^ was The Twist on the list?

by Anonymousreply 29August 13, 2023 10:09 AM

the RS piece is ONLY AN OPINION by that writer.

by Anonymousreply 30August 13, 2023 10:42 AM

“Don’t Leave Me This Way” should be #2, not left at #121.

by Anonymousreply 31August 13, 2023 1:04 PM

3. YMCA

2. Agadoo

1, Macarena

by Anonymousreply 32August 13, 2023 1:06 PM

R31, totally agree.

by Anonymousreply 33August 13, 2023 2:29 PM

Where is "Disco Duck"?

"Who Let the Dogs Out"?

"Kung Fu Fighting"?

THIS LIST IS BULLSHIT!!!!

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2023 2:35 PM

YMCA is on the list R32. I think Agadoo is too. The Macarena isn't.

What the flowerstan gays of a. certain age haven't picked up about the RS list is that it is not a list of greatest "Dance Hits" of 40 years of gay bars and discos in Indianapolis and Omaha. The list is reasonably "clubby". I think there is a large percentage of people who have never set foot in a real night club spinning the progressive dance music of the moment.

by Anonymousreply 38August 13, 2023 3:43 PM

Pump Up the Volume should be tied for 7th!

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2023 4:06 PM

I think part of the reason some of the songs don't make the list is that their definition of "dance song" is nebulous.

To me, "dance song" is something you'd hear at a Sunday Tea, rather than Saturday night at a club.

Songs like Wonderwall, Let Me Love You Tonight, Forever Young (remix), Come Rain Come Shine, or Sky High
