Gender reveal parties
I fucking hate them. Just learned my cousin wants us all there for her second child's on my one week of vacation. Why do these fraus think we're all on the edge of our seats to find out? Your baby is yours to enjoy.
I wish they'd just tell us in the group chat so I could text a simple congrats.

What do women expecting an XXY intersex child do for these parties?

What if the kid is non-binary?

I don't get gender reveals at all. I believe part of the excitement of having a child is waiting until he/she is born to find out the gender. 🤷♀️

Take donuts and hot dogs.

R4 - you'll be happy to know that some parents still wait. My son and daughter-in-law didn't know until she was was born (last week!!)

The only party an unborn child needs is the baby shower. I'm glad to support the couple with the baby stuff they need, but gender reveals are just about parents' vanity.

R2 Regardless of the kid’s chromosomes. I think it would be fun to shoot purple confetti out of the cannon and see the reactions.

These bitches just want more gifts.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 9, 2023 7:53 PM

Just to be sure - the baby shower is a separate event, right? Do you need to bring gifts for both?

Just send a card afterward that says CONGRATULATIONS, IT HAS A DICK! or CONGRATULATIONS, IT HAS A PUSSY!.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 9, 2023 8:02 PM

I didn't think about that either, R10, but they'll just get a card from me regardless. She's planning for another baby shower, which is already iffy to do after the first child is born imo

An invitation to a party is not a court summons or subpoena.
Hint: you don't have to go, nor do you have to come up with an elaborate reason.
Extra hint: after the party, just ask someone whether it's a boy or girl if you're interested. If you're not, don't bother until the kid is born. If you're really not interested, don't bother asking. Wait until someone seeks you out to inform you.

It’s your cousin. Just don’t go.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 9, 2023 8:08 PM

Just ignore the whole thing. Dead silence to her invitation.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 9, 2023 8:11 PM

Just send her a note and tell her that you like to be surprised, OP. To be told ahead of time ruins the magic for you, 😂.

Miss Manners would tell you that no reason is needed, elaborate or otherwise. "I'm sorry, I won't be able to make it" is the only response required. You don't "owe" them any further explanation. If you're asked for a reason, keep repeating "I just can't make it" until they get tired of asking.

Just send her a voucher for Abortion Hut.
And for Christmas, you can get her husband a voucher to Vasectomies R’ Us.

Gender reveal parties = Death and mass destruction.
You've all read the news stories on DL.

You don't even have to lie, as r1 suggests. Just send your regrets. If you want to not make waves, send a gift. But there is absolutely no obligation to go if you think the whole idea is stupid. Invitations are not commands.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 9, 2023 8:27 PM

R20- I agree. They aren't going waste an invitation on someone who isn't going give them gifts.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 9, 2023 8:32 PM

Stupidest new idea for a party yet, not to mention laughably egocentric. No one gives a fuck what gender your baby is, difficult as this might be for you to believe.

So they are assigning a gender even before birth? How dare they!!

Exactly.
The ONLY reason people DEMAND to know why is that they want to judge whether that reason is sufficient in their estimation. It also opens you up to argument and discussion about why you're wrong and why your reason is insufficient to miss their big day. Asking "why" is the preamble both trying to argue that that reason is not good enough, as well as the first salvo in their guilt tripping you to "make it up to them" for missing it.

Literal violence! That may be the reason why so many gender reveal parties end up being literally violent!

My sister and brother-in-law did a balloon popping by themselves let us know by sharing the video. It was tasteful... They had their cute reveal without making everyone come out.

OP: Don't get yourself all worked up. Just don't go. Politely decline the invitation by whatever excuse fits the bill (e.g., It's my vacation, and I won't be around.)
Once you get this monkey off your back, you will feel great and be free to enjoy your vacation even if you are doing nothing...providing you truly don't want to attend some stupid gender reveal gathering, since it certainly isn't a party, at least not for you.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 9, 2023 10:11 PM

OP: The sooner you decline the invitation, the better you'll feel. You will also soon realize that the reveal party is not about you. Expecting parents who do this kind of shit, are egocentric and will quickly move on to the details of their party and to the other guests who are attending. It's a burden for you now, because it's awkward to say NO. But once you cordially decline, you will feel like a burden has been lifted. Enjoy your vacation without this nonsense on your schedule.

Thankfully I’ve never been involved in something so tawdry. I went to a baby shower once and it was disgusting. They were measuring things with string and there was no booze. I left early

My sister's friends organised her a baby shower, a decade ago. I was forced into attending. Her friends melted different chocolate bars in diapers and the guests had to taste them and guess what bars they were. The whole thing was hideous and undignified.

Is it really a gender reveal party in 2023 if no one has burned down a forest, filled grandma with shrapnel, or watched a plane crash after it belched out pink mist?
Fuck gender reveal parties, fuck the parents that plan them, and fuck the people that encourage this shitty ritual

These parties are out-of-date and passé. These days, kids CHOOSE their gender. So what's to reveal? It's all just provisional.

Wouldn’t cutting into a cake dyed pink or blue under white icing be sufficient? To much death and destruction has resulted from these celebrations.

I abhor them, and have never attended one. It's all about the vanity of the parents.
My niece and her husband did not want to know the gender for either of their kids. The 'theme' of the nursery was jungle (lots of green print). For the first child, the decorations (and gifts) were pandas and zebras. For the second child, the theme was lions/giraffes. With the same green print curtains/sheets/shams used again in the room.
I know that lions, giraffes and zebras do not live in a jungle. But the black/white and yellow/brown accents looked awesome in a green room. Lots of recycling, and nothing supported that silly pastel pink/blue dichotomy of baby decorations.
