I got up from our table, found our waitress, explained that my friend's family member had a medical crisis, and that we needed to get to the hospital right way. Could I please get my check?

She was very sympathetic, got my check together right away, brought it to my table and took my card, then came straight back so I could sign it. This is a restaurant that is normally fairly leisurely about bringing the check, but she got right on it when I told her what was happening.

It took maybe three minutes all together.

Related to the topic, when I was a freshman in college, I went with a schoolmate to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break. We picked up a friend of his who has just gotten out of the army.

We stopped at a Denny's in the middle of nowhere Florida and said friend said he would cover his share of the gas by paying for the meal. We all had two full meals. He grabbed the check and told us to go get the car.

You can see where this is going. He comes running out of the restaurant, jumps in the car and yells "drive".

It was so stupid and I can't believe we didn't get caught. The state highway that we were on was the only one going through that town.
