I found an article with a picture of the victim. It seems that they had an ongoing romantic relationship. With all due respect, RIP, but he was nothing special to look at. Sancho's father has now said he has released the Spanish lawyers he had hired to help his son.

This may be in direct response to frustration with the Spanish lawyers blaming the Thais for everything including their own missteps, but also from some pointed advice by Spanish TV personality Frank Cuesta who hosted a long-running series "Frank de la Junga" about jungle life in Thailand. Cuesta's ex-wife, a Thai native, was arrested for possession of 0.005 grams of cocaine in 2012 and served 6-years of a 15-year sentence. Cuesta maintains that his ex-wife was imprisoned in retaliation for her fight against illegal animal trafficking, but his own bad experience with the Thai legal system was hampered by foreign lawyers. He issued a press statement to Sancho's father telling him that his only hope is to fire the Spanish lawyers and defer to the Thai system, that to do otherwise raises hackles as it is seen as disrespectful.
