She sure looks like one.
Was Suzy Knickerbocker a gay fave back in her day?

She's STILL a gay fave, silly!

Not particularly.

She was fabulous on the original What's My Line?.
While the other panelists had cards identifying them as MISS FRANCIS and MR. CERF, hers just read SUZY.

Suzy also was one of the cameos on Batman when Batman and Robin are scaling a building and some celebrity pops open a window to chat with them briefly. What a strange choice; I'm sure 95% of the country had no idea who she was.

SPY Magazine used to make fun of her quite a bit because she was often drunk at public appearances. I remember photos of her stepping out of her shoes by accident, barely aware of what was going on, underneath the headline "TEE MANY MARTOONIS?" in their hilarious "Party Poop" section.

No.

She was tired ass and cut rate. Nobody gave a crap about her column.

There was a real hierarchy of NY gossip columnists in the 80s. Liz Smith was at the top (she was the most read, even though she was the nicest and so had the least good dish), and Suzy was near the bottom.

See? This thread is going nowhere because at the end of the day, what is there to say about little Miss Aileen Mehle?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 6, 2023 1:42 AM |
I have no idea whatsoever who that is, but she looks like a drag queen doing 80s Tina Turner.

Read the article, r14, it will tell you all you need to know.

Was she Cholley's daughter, wife or mother?

Was there anyone else, R11, besides Liz, Cindy Adams, Claudia Cohen and Suzy?

Rex Reed was on the scene.

Suzy. Knew her. Big hair. Texan. Class gal. Ate at Patsy's. Loved parties. Sinatra confidante.

If only Jane Fonda had played her, 10-20 years ago.

I remember her as a guest panelist on What's My Line? in which they surprised her with her own son as a contestant (she and the panel were blindfolded). He was a very conservative young man, IIRC in a military uniform, not at all what you'd expect from a swinging sophisticated NY gossip columnist.

And I remember her in an episode of WML where she guessed the identity of Mystery Guest Hugh Hefner but literally groaned in obvious disdain as she said his name.

"Cholly Knickerbocker" was a pseudonym for a gossip column which was written by a number of writers over the years who assumed the [italic]nom de plume[/italic]. There was never a real Cholly Knickerbocker.

James Revson (of the Revlon family) was a newly hired gossipeuse at Newsday when he broke the story that Suzy had written about a Met gala she hadn't attended (she was out of town) and gotten the guest list wrong. She'd made the whole thing up.
Suzy went BALLISTIC on his ass but later admitted she wasn't there.
One simply didn't criticize Suzy, darling.

I was a research associate for a year after college and read the gossips just like Tess did in Working Girl. I got hooked on them and it came in handy later on when I passed through big ticket cultural philanthropy for a couple years. Those were the days. Aileen and Cindy were already way past their prime but I browsed through them anyway. I like the Cindy Adams skits on SNL.

Did you ever hear of Suzygate?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 8, 2023 12:27 AM |
At the height of Suzygate, NY magazine ran a cover story on the "scandal".
