Not making excuses in any way for the homophobia or obviously the killing, but if you read the article there was clearly a lengthy confrontation with lots of exchanged words. People are fucking nuts nowadays. If someone’s confronts you like this, especially late at night in Brooklyn, it’s not worth it to argue back. People are snapping over minor things.

I fear the man who stabbed the victim is going to get away with it. It's infuriating and unfair, but because the victim apparently wanted to continue the confrontation, the killer will say he feared for life. The victim, who lost his life, is going to get blamed for his own death.
It infuriates me because the perp's friend started the whole confrontation because he thought he had the right to tell a group of men, minding their own business and having fun, to stop dancing. Because it offended as a Muslim. I don't give a fuck! I get offended every day and I can still mind my own business. I'm sure this little asshole will get away for instigating this fight because he's a teenager.
I agree that we should not engage with people who are provoking confrontations. But I feel for the group of men who were dancing. It's infuriating to have a bunch of homophobic shit stains try to control your actions and behaviors that are ultimately hurting no one. That you are offended is irrelevant.

I’ve seen so many gay men share this saying the guy was “killed for dancing.” No one is talking about what many of us have mentioned on this thread: the need to de-escalate. This is a tragedy, first and foremost, and viciously homophobic. But if we want to help young gay people right now, in these crazy times, we need to teach backing down from someone who wants to do us harm.

R74 You're right that we need to teach people to avoid unnecessary conflict. A lot of people want to provoke so they can get their anger out on other people. Never get in fights with strangers.
However, it's also understandable that people are angry about these young men starting the confrontation. Because we also need to teach people to mind their own business. We also need to teach people that they don't own others and shouldn't be telling other people, especially grown men, how to behave. We need to teach people that your personal beliefs, based on your religion or personal philosophy, does not give you license to start a confrontation with anyone.
I think the advice to de-escalate is sound, but it goes both ways.

One of Sibley's friends, Otis Pena, posted about the incident on Facebook, mourning the loss of his "brother" and accusing his killers of being motivated by hate.
"They hate us cause we are gay," he wrote. "Screaming we Muslim and we don't like gays!!!!! As we are innocently pumping gas and y'all decided to stab one of us!!!"
Pena included numerous photos from the scene showing his hand red from Sibley's blood, which also covered the sidewalk where he was killed.
Sibley moved to New York from Philadelphia to pursue a career in dancing. He has been remembered as "funny, unique, charismatic and [someone who] always knew how to have a good time."
His death caused widespread outrage, and even caught the attention of Mayor Eric Adams. "This young man was experiencing a hate crime," he said. "We will find this person. It shakes our confidence."

It is worth pausing over every murder that goes on in this city. But a brutal killing this week deserves special attention.
Not least because it tells us something it appears we don’t want to know.
O’Shae Sibley was a talented 28-year-old dancer and choreographer.
He was stabbed to death last Saturday night at a gas station in Brooklyn.
This drew the attention of another group of men at the station.
Words were exchanged and Sibley was stabbed. His friends and some bystanders called 911 and tried to help him.
But he bled to death on the sidewalk.
Sibley happened to be black and gay.
Normally either of these things — let alone both — would attract serious attention from the media and campaign groups.
Yet while the killing has widely been reported as a “hate crime,” 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 “𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙚.” One that doesn’t fit the dominant, enforced narrative of our time.
Had the group who confronted Sibley and his friends been white and shouted that they didn’t like gay people, or black people, this country would be in meltdown right now.
Every Presidential candidate would be condemning it.
All the “community groups” who make a profession out of campaigning against “hate” would be in full fund-raising mode.
The New York Times would have cleared the pages for days of reflections on what this said about America.
But that is not what happened.
Here’s what happened according to the people who were there.
One of the friends who was with Sibley when he was murdered posted a photo on social media of the bloodied sidewalk and wrote: “They hated us cause we are gay! Screaming we Muslim and we don’t like gays!!!!! As we are innocently pumping gas and y’all decided to stab one of us!!! #justice.”
Yet there is a second witness who has spoken to a local website.
An employee at the gas station said : “These people were like ‘We’re Muslim, I don’t want you dancing.’ The gay people, they were not trying to fight.”
Yet these facts don’t fit the narrative. The victim was gay and black. The perpetrator was Muslim.
Our era is obsessed with “hate-crimes.” So much so that it sees them in places where they don’t even happen.
Yet last Saturday in Brooklyn was a hate crime. And the media are actually covering it up.
All because Sibley’s assailants were not hood-wearing members of the KKK or “MAGA” hat-wearing Republicans.
Instead they come from another group that our media identifies as a victim class.
The fact that the men were Muslim is why the media has been actively dishonest in its reporting.
The New York Times has written about the case. But it has not bothered to inform its readers of why Sibley bled out on a Brooklyn sidewalk.
But because the identity and motive of the perpetrators are an awkward glitch in that paper’s big narrative the Times simply covered over the facts.
The 𝙂𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚. 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙦𝙪𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙮’𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙄 𝙦𝙪𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙.
The Guardian happy to leave its readers with the impression that white Christian rednecks or Orthodox Jews might have carried out the killing.
Shamefully the gay press has done the same.
Some gay groups have even tried to link the killing to recent debates about transgender issues.
Obviously such false reporting is another reason why so many people don’t trust the media these days.
But this cover-up also displays an appalling cowardice.
Nobody should be murdered because of who they are. But nor should a murderer be given cover because of who they are.
The most that newspaper could bring itself to say was that an eyewitness said that the perpetrators mentioned “defending their religious beliefs” during the confrontation.”
Apparently dancing to Beyonce can be an assault on some peoples’ religious beliefs.

I love a good protest but Vogueing as a sign of protest is far too complicated to ask of people. Although that twat Madonna should show up. Sibley was like a throwback to the Blonde Ambition tour dancers.
“The killing has shocked New Yorkers and galvanized the gay community with grief. Some are planning vigils and others have called on the public to gather at the Mobil gas station on Coney Island Avenue and “vogue as an act of resistance,” a reference to the stylized dancing that Mr. Sibley and his friends performed, one that mimics models’ poses and blurs the lines of gender.”
Gift article linked for you cheap sluts. Yes, I’m talking to you R105.

The suspect in the deadly gas station stabbing of O’Shae Sibley is in police custody after turning himself in at a Brooklyn station house, a senior law enforcement official said. The suspect’s name has not yet been released by police.
New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov said on Twitter that the man turned himself in on Friday and was in custody. A senior law enforcement official confirmed that the individual was in custody.

The suspect is going to claim self defense. If I read early reports correctly, the fight conflict had simmered down and the two groups were moving away from each other and then Sibley decided to charge the perp. Who then stabbed Sibley.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the killing of O’Shae Sibley, who was stabbed to death on July 29 after a dispute over his dancing at a Brooklyn gas station.
Who cares? The world does not need to acquiesce to your religion:
“Summy Ullah, a 32-year-old gas station attendant who witnessed the confrontation, said one of the men who approached Mr. Sibley and his friends had said: “I’m Muslim. I don’t want this here.”
So this was a racist incident, too:
“The men yelled homophobic slurs and anti-Black statements at Mr. Sibley, who was Black, and his friends, Mr. Kenny said, all while demanding they stop dancing.”
Where is the larger black community representation? Oh right...he is gay so the larger black community does not care"
“At the news conference on Saturday, flanked by leaders from the city’s gay and Muslim communities, Mr. Adams emphasized that Mr. Sibley’s killing was not evidence of hatred directed at L.G.B.T.Q. people by Muslims in New York, and spoke about how both groups have been victims of hate. The two communities “stand united against fighting any form of hate in this city,” he said.”

"Security camera video showed the two groups arguing for a few minutes. Both sides had walked away when Sibley and a friend abruptly returned and again confronted one of the young men, who had stayed behind recording on his phone. In the video, Sibley could be seen following the teen and then lunging at him before the two disappeared out of the camera’s view. A moment later, he walks backward into view, checking his side, and then collapses to the sidewalk."
This trial is going to be messy and the perp is going to get involuntary manslaughter at most. A good lawyer will get him off on "self-defense". I don't want that result to be probably but the situation is not clear.
The black men were unquestionably the subject to race based verbal harassment but once the conflict turned physical it becomes messy.
Then the fight had ended and Sibley was not in any danger.
Then Sibley CHOSE to return and jump the muslim 17yo, for video taping them.
The 17yo is going to argue he feared for his life, perhaps by a bigger and stronger man, so he overreacted out of self preservation. Sadly, it is a good argument.

I've viewed the video several times and have never seen any footage of Sibley lunging at the kid. All I've ever seen is the kid and Sibley appearing to walk together, rather casually, out of camera range, then suddenly you see the kid jumping back into range, which was the moment at which presumably he had just stabbed Sibley. Now maybe the video I saw was edited but that's all I've seen of the incident up to this point.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | August 7, 2023 11:11 PM |
well the trial is going to be messy. There were points were both parties could have walked away with no bodily harm. Sibley friends were retreating, Sibley with them. The muslim kids friends were retreating. Opposite directions. Something provoked Sibley to reengage but it meant moving back into danger, or perhaps at that point, he became the aggressor, and the muslim teen was deadly ready. Or some other scenario entirely.
What is clear is that the rumble was verbal for the most part, and the muslim teens didn't gang up on the black men with bodily force and in the process stab Sibley.

R187 yea and maybe he’s just a regular white American.
When everyone thought he was Muslim it was all of a sudden the shared responsibility of every Muslim alive and every Muslim American…and now that he’s a white American it’s all of a sudden his immigrant status, or his Russian heritage that’s the issue.
This is because white Americans view themselves as a multi-faceted group of people with many different types, whereas they look at any group that’s not them as singular and unified, this is especially true of white people that don’t know any (for instance) Muslim people, or black people personally.
You’re able to make a distinction to separate any connection between you and him (the murderer), whereas if it’s a Muslim person, or a black person, they’re all the same. The way this thread is going is such a perfect illustration of this.
