How often should you take showers?

People are discussing their shower habits again and debating how often they should bathe.

It began with a new Today segment titled "How often should you..." that debuted July 18. The first topic was showering, which had Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer and Sheinelle Jones guessing how often per week a dermatologist might recommend that a person wash up. Shop Today editorial director Adrianna Brach shocked them all by saying that the "consensus is two to three times a week."

The number comes from a 2022 article where multiple dermatologists weighed in. Dr. Mary Stevenson, assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Health, was quoted with that estimation.

On July 19, America Ferrera revealed while playing a game with her Barbie castmates for Vanity Fair that her guilty pleasure is "not showering for a few days."

Both clips had people across the internet sharing their opinions.

While individuals are set in their own personal hygiene routines, there is "no one-size-fits-all answer" to the question of how many times a week somebody should shower, according to WebMD. So, as the topic appears in cultural conversations, it's ripe for conversation.

The subject has come up in the past when celebrities have spoken publicly about their own routines. In 2021, Jake Gyllenhaal told Vanity Fair, "I find bathing to be less necessary, at times." He went on to say: "There’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves."

Dwayne Johnson vehemently protested that take, sharing on Twitter that he showers multiple times in a single day.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis also found themselves mired in controversy surrounding bathing habits when they said that their kids don't have daily full body washes. "If you can see the dirt on them, clean them," Kutcher said during an appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast in 2021.

There are cases to be made about the health detriments of showering too often or not enough. Experts point out that it's important to protect the natural oils of your skin by being mindful not to strip them with too much soap and scrubbing. At the same time, it's vital to wash off bacteria, dirt and allergens that might contribute to acne and certain skin infections.

Brach of Today clarified that shower frequency does "depend on the person" and their routine — including lifestyle, activity level, skin type and age. Those who are susceptible to sweat and body odor should shower more than people who struggle with dry skin, eczema or rosacea. "At the end of the day, it’s all personal preference," she said in the segment.

There are even cultural differences that come into play. "Approximately two-thirds of Americans shower daily. In Australia it's over 80%. But in China, about half of people report bathing only twice a week," according to Harvard Health Publishing. "The daily shower is more about habit and societal norms than health. Perhaps that's why the frequency of bathing or showering varies so much from country to country."

Shower frequency may have little to do with health

"Besides considering it healthier, people may choose to shower daily for a number of reasons, including: concerns about body odor, help waking up, a morning routine that may include working out. Each of these has merit, especially considering that personal or work relationships can be jeopardized by complaints about body odor or personal hygiene. But what is considered acceptable in this regard varies from culture to culture. And some (perhaps a lot) of what we do when it comes to cleaning habits is influenced heavily by marketing." — Dr. Robert H. Shmerling, senior faculty editor and editorial advisory board member, Harvard Health Publishing

Occupation is important to consider

"If you’re someone who has a laborious job, so you’re a teacher or maybe you work in health care, you probably are showering more often than the normal person." — Adrianna Brach, Today

Your child may not need a daily bath

"If getting your child to take a bath often means a struggle, you’ll be glad to know that a daily bath may not be necessary. How often your child needs a bath depends on your child’s age and activities." — American Academy of Dermatology

Showers don't always have to include soap

"Use soap on your groin, your armpits and your feet. These are areas that are prone to bacteria and can get smelly. Any other areas are likely good with water." — University of Nebraska University Health Center

Taking multiple showers a day isn't recommended

"Some people shower in the morning, after the gym, then again before bed. That’s not necessary and can be very drying and irritating for your skin." — Dr. Shilpi Khetarpal, dermatologist, Cleveland Clinic

There are healthier ways to take a shower

If you have skin conditions, such as psoriasis, "limit your showers to 5 minutes and baths to 15 minutes or less," and "use warm — NOT hot — water every time." — American Academy of Dermatology

Once a day. Twice if I go to the gym, Sometimes I skip showering on Saturdays if I'm staying home all day/night.

I took a 30 min epsom salt bath this evening. It helped relax my body. I then rubbed Kiehl’s Crème de Corps lotion all over. I applied my routine Clinique Moisture Surge moisturizer to my face. Now I’m enjoying a glass of Evian water. Will watch the new season of Big Brother tonight.

I have heard the theory that food allergies have been exploding because of our desire kill all of the bacteria on our bodies, good and bad. I think showering depends on age and activity. Hormonal teenagers with acne need to shower every day, they smell, everything on them smells. People need to shower after working out or swimming in a pool (get rid of the chlorine etc.). Kids, older people- meh, when they are dirty, every other day. I shower every day in the spring and summer because I have horrible allergies and need to get the pollen off. In the winter, might be every day, might be every other day depending on what is on the agenda and if I have to make a public appearance.

when my own funk smells bad to me I know it's time

by Anonymousreply 8August 2, 2023 10:21 PM

I don’t want to offend.

by Anonymousreply 9August 2, 2023 10:25 PM

I can’t fully awaken or function well if I don’t shower daily. If I skip a day, I feel like a slug. Lose motivation. Sometimes I shower twice daily, especially if I’m exercising outdoors. I love my showers and I linger in them to relax my muscles.

^ I hope you live in Seattle, gurl

by Anonymousreply 11August 2, 2023 10:32 PM

Fuck this. Unless you're a hermit, showering is not merely a "matter of personal preference." It's a courtesy to those around you.

WTF is wrong with people these days?

by Anonymousreply 12August 2, 2023 10:44 PM

^ you've never been to Paris?

by Anonymousreply 13August 2, 2023 10:45 PM

It's 106 here. I can skip a day if I'm not going anywhere, but I felt itchy and grungey today and took a shower. No plans tonight, but I feel better and will probably sleep better because I feel feel/smell clean.

R5 and R10 are the only people I can relate to.

They understand the need to be clean.

R6 is there too, but he seems a bit high maintenance.

by Anonymousreply 15August 2, 2023 11:07 PM

R8, hun, when your own funk smells bad to you means it was time a week ago!

by Anonymousreply 16August 2, 2023 11:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 17August 2, 2023 11:33 PM

R5, epsom salt is for baths only? what else can we use it for?

by Anonymousreply 18August 2, 2023 11:36 PM

R1, "soap on your groin" is to me as Bambi's tongue is to the La Brea Tar Pits after a sulfur dioxide truck drove into them and exploded.

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2023 12:00 AM

Eldergays should thoroughly shower everyday to avoid that “old man odor.” Always wear freshly laundered clothes with a citrusy cologne. Dress well, to look your very best. As an eldergay myself, this boosts my confidence.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2023 12:12 AM

R19, I'm giving you two dozen WWs!

You should shower once a day. If you don't then you smell to other people.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2023 1:17 AM

I live in the swamp know as Flawduh. Cold showers twice a day are a requirement for survival.

by Anonymousreply 25August 3, 2023 1:33 AM

How long do you spend washing your crotch, under carriage and ass??

I like to lather up my crotch and use my mesh sponge to wash em. Then I re-lather em up and repeat

by Anonymousreply 26August 3, 2023 6:01 PM

Love washing my asshole!

by Anonymousreply 27August 3, 2023 11:45 PM

I sleep better if I shower before bed. I work out in the morning and need to shower then, and I prefer to shave in the shower so I’m a 2 showers a day man. The only day I might skip is Sunday if I don’t see anyone. Monday is clean sheet day.

by Anonymousreply 28August 4, 2023 12:00 AM

There’s no one size fits all? He’s never met a DLer…

by Anonymousreply 29August 4, 2023 12:02 AM

I shower a minimum of 3 times a week. I wash up every day. I work from home and I'm not a person who works out so I never get sweaty and foul. But I am clean....No, really.

by Anonymousreply 30August 4, 2023 12:05 AM

I wash my asshole 4-5 times a year
