Keith Haring

How is his artist reputation, nowadays? In July I bought Haring merch on deep discount at H&M. I guess the kiddos are ignorant or blasé. Then I bothered to return the t-shirt that has a reproduction of a Warhol Polaroid portrait of Haring on it. I thought I might feel sad having to explain who he was. I like the other merch though. Looks fresh but also iconic and takes me back.

He painted. He loved black cock. He died of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 1July 30, 2023 5:38 PM

" Dear Mr. Haring."

I love him still. I have about 7 shirts in different colors with his dog on it.

He was of a time.

I hate his work, though.

by Anonymousreply 4July 30, 2023 7:30 PM

Great talent, completely original in his art and approach, whose life was cut short- imagine if he had lived and evolved in his art.

by Anonymousreply 5July 30, 2023 8:02 PM

He wasn’t bad looking nude, other than above the neck.

by Anonymousreply 6July 30, 2023 8:05 PM

Wasn’t there some kiddie porn allegations before he died?

by Anonymousreply 7July 30, 2023 8:11 PM

Radiant baby is genius

by Anonymousreply 8July 30, 2023 8:15 PM

Nice cock.

by Anonymousreply 9July 30, 2023 9:13 PM

For a geeky looking guy he was quite cute and sexy.

I purchased an AMAZING Keith Haring original, hand-drawn/painted 12" vase about 4 years ago. Got it for an incredibly low price at the time, which was the ONLY reason I was able to obtain this great piece. It exudes so much positive energy that I would never considering selling/parting with it until I die. I love his work and will eventually donate the vase to a museum. At some point, true art has 1,000 times more meaning for the viewer than a price tag can approximate.

by Anonymousreply 11July 30, 2023 9:54 PM

I think Haring's work is very one-note and overrated.

by Anonymousreply 12July 31, 2023 3:16 AM

R12 - And yet, there is no other artist whose technique/style could be confused or mistaken with Haring's (unless they are attempting a forgery . . . )

Monet was a blurry "One Note"; Rembrandt was a dark vs. light "One Note"; Georgia O'Keeffe was a pastel/vaginal "One Note". YOUR POINT?!?

by Anonymousreply 13July 31, 2023 4:08 AM

I found a survey of some of his pieces that have sold for several million each. A few are quite impressive.

This gigantic tarp painting from 1983 is very striking. Sold for $4,212,500 at Christie’s New York in 2017.

I don't enjoy looking at his art. Does that count for anything, or is his work meant to be ugly for the sake of some deeper meaning?

by Anonymousreply 16July 31, 2023 4:33 AM

Could you possible consider that many people do not find his art ugly to look at? Sheesh. You say it like your perception is absolute.

by Anonymousreply 17July 31, 2023 4:40 AM

R16 - Word of advice: Then DON'T LOOK AT IT.

Problem solved!

by Anonymousreply 18July 31, 2023 4:40 AM

P.S. R16 - What the FUCK is wrong with you?!?

I don't enjoy looking at female genitalia, so you know what I do? I DON'T LOOK AT IT.

by Anonymousreply 19July 31, 2023 4:45 AM

He has a Woody Allen vibe goin’ on.

by Anonymousreply 20July 31, 2023 4:48 AM

We are all just expressing our opinions. That’s what this thread and The Data Lounge are for.

by Anonymousreply 21July 31, 2023 5:48 AM

R16 statement means Haring's work is ugly and asks if Haring made it ugly on purpose to express a deeper meaning.

This is so insulting to Haring.

by Anonymousreply 22July 31, 2023 6:11 AM

His works have shot up in value these past couple of years. For some reason I never ever liked his stuff, and then about 3 years ago I fell in love with it.

I really wish I’d bought a couple of his prints 10-15 years ago when I was buying art.

by Anonymousreply 23July 31, 2023 6:13 AM

R23 Yes I have the same experience that I didn't feel much about it in the 80s, and then I thought it was fading in the 90s, and then now that I'm old, suddenly it speaks to me.

by Anonymousreply 24July 31, 2023 6:16 AM

This thread has reminded me that I still need to get tickets to the Keith Haring exhibit at the Broad Museum in Downtown L.A.

Keith Haring was a pop-art illustrator who was at the right place at the right time.

His work is fun but very one note. I doubt it was ever going to "evolve".

by Anonymousreply 26July 31, 2023 10:52 AM

Love his penis in OP’s photo.

by Anonymousreply 27July 31, 2023 10:57 AM

Lovely to see so many here revealing how little they know about, but are happy to give seemingly authoritative opinions on.

by Anonymousreply 28July 31, 2023 11:12 AM

I always liked his art, when it started appearing on record covers, like Malcolm McLaren back in the early 80s but I didn't know anything about him. That's probably true of the general public today, not sure if people know his name, he's probably regarded as a designer of retro t-shirts more than anything else.

I'm reading his journals at the moment, he was quite ahead of his time, thinking about incorporating CGI into his work.

I also think he was really hot.

by Anonymousreply 29July 31, 2023 11:16 AM

One trick pony.

by Anonymousreply 30July 31, 2023 12:50 PM

ROFL at anyone who has looked at his early NY SVA/Club 57 work, his socio-political work, the many media and geolocations in which he delivered his work — among many, many many other relevant details — and calls this man a one-trick pony.

by Anonymousreply 31July 31, 2023 1:03 PM

I like the dick!

by Anonymousreply 32July 31, 2023 1:59 PM

He’s not really considered cool by today’s hipsters since places like H&M and Uniqlo are using him to sell tshirts

by Anonymousreply 33July 31, 2023 2:22 PM

R33 He has outgrown that market, need serious money to buy his art these days.

by Anonymousreply 34August 1, 2023 1:03 PM

Tight bod, really nice cock.

I'm not the person you're addressing, but my point would be that you're a complete idiot if you think you're going to get anyone to believe Rembrandt was a "One Note."

by Anonymousreply 36August 1, 2023 2:48 PM

He was very generous and kind hearted. He had no problem whipping up a drawing for a fan, especially children. A mutual friend - gone now - was given a small painting by him. He painted it on the spot in NYC and inscribed it to this friend from years earlier in Pittsburgh. I have it now and prize it for both their memories.

by Anonymousreply 37August 1, 2023 3:12 PM

Still reading his journals. There are some horribly poignant moments, for example where he visits the Picasso family and wonders how much art he could create if he lived to be 50. Despite not being aware of his HIV status at this point, he already writes as if he knows he'll die young.

by Anonymousreply 38August 7, 2023 11:57 AM

I neither love nor hate his art. It reminds me of the saddest decade, the decade in which so many of my friends died. So I don't spend much time in contemplation of his art. The ten minutes I've spent looking at this thread is probably the longest time I've devoted to it in decades. As with so many people from then, I wish he had lived.

by Anonymousreply 39August 7, 2023 12:24 PM

Growing up in NYC, I remember seeing his subway drawings and seeing him arrested on the local news for graffiti. Imagine getting arrested for graffiti now? You can't even get arrested for stealing from Duane Reade!

by Anonymousreply 40August 7, 2023 12:55 PM

I like Haring, but his estate needs to chill out. It feels like they'll license his artwork to everyone and anyone for any use at all.

by Anonymousreply 41August 7, 2023 2:42 PM

Sad that he died young, but as an artist he was basically a one-trick pony.

by Anonymousreply 42August 7, 2023 5:54 PM

It was a very new and unique trick. You can spot his work and know who it is immediately

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2023 12:33 AM

It was carefully thought out. Keith was fascinated by semiotics, and he worked this interest into street art - graffiti - and still more, LGBT/HIV/AIDS issues. He was exactly the right man at the right time. A street fighter who knew how to get a message across to everyone.

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2023 2:07 PM

He did subscribe to the theory that AIDS was created by the Government to target gay men though. That's a bit of a black mark.

by Anonymousreply 45August 8, 2023 2:29 PM

My daughter did set design for plays in HS. Her peak was when they did Rent. She reproduced some basic Haring images to decorate the set. It was a really beautiful stage and there was a lot of talent on it.
