Worst performance from an actor/actress you like?

For me: Dustin Hoffman in A Series of Unfortunate Events.

by Anonymousreply 41July 30, 2023 2:37 PM

I thought Annette Benning was really over-the-top in American Beauty. She was nominated for an Oscar so I guess that's an unpopular opinion

I've liked him in some things but James Franco in Queen of the Desert was like something out of a high school play. So amateurish and miscast

by Anonymousreply 1July 29, 2023 5:05 AM

I loved Gregory Peck in anything BUT a western. He was in plenty of them and he stunk as a cowboy but he was great in anything else.

by Anonymousreply 2July 29, 2023 5:21 AM

Barbara Stanwyck in Union Pacific. Her Irish accent is pretty bad. That's the only bad performance I've seen from her

by Anonymousreply 3July 29, 2023 5:26 AM

Joan Crawford in that soap opera "The Secret Storm" circa 1968

by Anonymousreply 4July 29, 2023 5:37 AM

Halle Berry in “Moonfall”. Dull surprise throughout, no reactions to anything.

by Anonymousreply 5July 29, 2023 5:41 AM

Jodie Foster in Elysium. She seemed to channel Suze Orman and was terrible. Elysium is the only film starring Foster that I thought was godawful.

by Anonymousreply 6July 29, 2023 6:51 AM

First one that popped into my mind:

Oscar Isaac in MOJAVE (2015).

by Anonymousreply 7July 29, 2023 6:51 AM

Oh honey, do we really have to like the actress to answer this question? If not, I have the PERFECT example. Actually, I have so many examples I could close the fucking thread.

by Anonymousreply 8July 29, 2023 7:32 AM

Renee Zellweger in Cold Mountain

by Anonymousreply 9July 29, 2023 5:52 PM

Fredric March in "Inherit the Wind." He unwisely went full-on hammy.

by Anonymousreply 10July 29, 2023 6:28 PM

Speaking of hammy....Lionel Barrymore in Duel in the Sun

by Anonymousreply 11July 29, 2023 6:32 PM

Dustin Hoffman in "Hook." But then, that whole movie was a steaming pile of crap.

Also, Dustin Hoffman in "Death of a Salesman," shmacting all over the place in his old age makeup, opposite the horribly unattractive John Malkovich, completely miscast as Biff.

by Anonymousreply 12July 29, 2023 6:36 PM

Jodie Foster in "Nell"

Gwyneth Paltrow in "Shakespeare in Love"

by Anonymousreply 13July 29, 2023 6:41 PM

Well, sometimes it's just a matter of miscasting, like Bette in Beyond the Forest or Meryl in Still of the Night.

by Anonymousreply 14July 29, 2023 6:52 PM

Meryl in Into the Woods

by Anonymousreply 15July 29, 2023 7:12 PM

Who would have you cast, r15?

by Anonymousreply 16July 29, 2023 7:16 PM

Meryl was fine in that, but Bernadette Peters should've played The Witch.

by Anonymousreply 17July 29, 2023 7:19 PM

Denzel Washington in "John Q."

I found his character completely unlikeable.

by Anonymousreply 18July 29, 2023 7:29 PM

Meryl as Julia Child.

by Anonymousreply 19July 29, 2023 7:39 PM

Laurence Olivier in "Cat," in that shitty Harold Robbins film, Shylock Lear, well, look, just about anything past 1979..........last let it rip performance, "Sleuth." .......Most brilliant, "I have arrived as the greatest English living actor," .........."That Hamilton Woman." ..........His crowning achievement that no living English speaking actor will ever top...... "Othello."

by Anonymousreply 20July 29, 2023 7:48 PM

Laurence Olivier in The Jazz Singer

by Anonymousreply 21July 29, 2023 7:54 PM

Martin Short in Clifford and Eddie Murphy in Norbit. I think Murphy is a comic genius but what he did in Norbit made me want to assault someone when I left the theater.

by Anonymousreply 22July 29, 2023 7:59 PM

Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman.

by Anonymousreply 23July 29, 2023 8:06 PM

Gene Hackman in [italic]A Bridge Too Far[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 24July 29, 2023 8:10 PM

I found the Kenneth Branagh remake of Murder on the Orient Express quite excruciating. Only Johnny Depp gave a noteworthy performance; the rest ranged from bland to wretched, and sadly, Michelle Pfeiffer, one of my favorite actresses, fell into the latter camp: stiff and out of her element (maybe because it was such a bad picture?), she not only failed to make a mark as a bright spot, she made the film even worse.

Matt Damon in The Last Duel

by Anonymousreply 26July 29, 2023 8:32 PM

Sigourney Weaver in SNOW CAKE, playing an autistic woman. To be fair, the script was poor, reaching I AM SAM-level treacle.

Meryl in FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN. There's nothing remotely seductive or captivatingly mysterious about her performance. Even she doesn't like it.

Judy Davis in ABSOLUTE POWER. Not a good film anyway but she tends to camp it up in films where the material is bad.

Pacino has many performances in this category. His acting in ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL is at least as bad as in SCENT OF A WOMAN.

Daniel Day Lewis in A ROOM WITH A VIEW. Cecil Vyse should be a slightly humorous character but DDL can't do amusing to save his life. Just awful.

Maggie Smith in TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT. Mannered beyond belief, though she does have one funny moment where she faints sideways. Luckily Alec McCowen was good in it.

by Anonymousreply 27July 29, 2023 8:59 PM

Clooney as Batman. I've liked him in some other movies but not this one.

by Anonymousreply 28July 29, 2023 10:10 PM

Daniel Day Lewis in "The Age of Innocence".

by Anonymousreply 29July 29, 2023 10:32 PM

R25, I agree - it was jammed with talent turning in schlock performances.

The original version - I can't recall a single dud line.

by Anonymousreply 30July 29, 2023 10:50 PM

Debra Winger in Forget Paris. I love Deb, I actually think she might be the most talented cinematic dramatic actress of the past fifty years, but comedy is not her forte.

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2023 11:09 PM

Meryl in Big Little Lies. I like some of the other performnaces in this series, but M just missed the mark.

by Anonymousreply 32July 29, 2023 11:11 PM

Paul Newman and Julie Andrews in Torn Curtain. Not an ounce of chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2023 11:15 PM

William H. Macy in Seabiscuit. Excruciatingly annoying.

I’m mostly ambivalent on him, but I couldn’t stand his character in Seabiscuit.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2023 11:19 PM

Goldie Hawn in Deceived

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2023 11:28 PM

Winona Ryder - Bram Stoker's Dracula

by Anonymousreply 36July 30, 2023 12:48 AM

R36, actually everyone in that film sucked (tee-hee! I am twelve years old!), and it was a very talented cast. Not even Oldman made it work.

by Anonymousreply 37July 30, 2023 1:04 AM

Liv Ullmann in Lost Horizon

by Anonymousreply 38July 30, 2023 1:23 AM

Phyllis Diller in Barbie.......Yeah, Phyllis Diller............. Are you going to tell me that dyke from SNL, didn't look like her when she made her entrance into the film. All she needed was a long cigarette holder, Fang, and Bob Hope's timing.

by Anonymousreply 39July 30, 2023 2:19 AM

Kate Hepburn in DRAGON SEED.

by Anonymousreply 40July 30, 2023 2:10 PM

John Hurt in PARTNERS, with Ryan O'Neal.
