Remembering when Rose McGowan said gay men were more misogynistic than straight men

I was reminded of Rose McGowan's comments recently. I can't believe it was 2014, but there we are. To those who might have forgotten, she said:

“Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them.

“I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange Speedo and take molly.

“[Gay misogyny] is a huge problem.”

I seem to remember there was a bit of a backlash at the time, but it was generally deemed an OK thing for a straight woman to say about all gay men, because apparently she's a gay ally. I wonder if she still hates us.

by Anonymousreply 56July 30, 2023 6:38 AM

What a fucking CUNT!

by Anonymousreply 1July 27, 2023 7:16 PM

She shouldn’t be able to vote.

by Anonymousreply 2July 27, 2023 7:16 PM

It was all just so odd. I've never stood on top of a float, I've never worn an orange Speedo and I've never taken molly. I just think other men are sexually attractive.

If she'd made a generalisation like that about pretty much any other minority, she'd have been criticised a lot more heavily.

by Anonymousreply 3July 27, 2023 7:20 PM

I meant to add "and I don't think finding other men sexually attractive means I should have less rights".

by Anonymousreply 4July 27, 2023 7:20 PM

What prompted you to post this?

by Anonymousreply 5July 27, 2023 7:22 PM

She was treated horribly, but she's a total fucknut.

by Anonymousreply 6July 27, 2023 7:27 PM

R5 Like I say, I recently came across it. I think it was on Twitter. I vaguely remembered it, but looked up the details and realised it was worse than I thought at the time.

I'd forgotten that what prompted her comments was a boycott of the Dorchester Hotel collection, as it was Brunei owned, and Brunei had just passed a law to make gay sex punishable by stoning to death. She thought the boycott was stupid and that then led to her rant about gay men.

by Anonymousreply 7July 27, 2023 7:32 PM

Many gay men are not only not attracted to women but are not interested in women at all. Not all, but many secretly think that way. Gay men are men, and when the desire to pretend to be interested for sex is stripped away, it's even more apparent. Misogyny is a spectrum. Straight men often actively hate women because they think they owe them something.

by Anonymousreply 8July 27, 2023 7:32 PM

She's crazy, but she's not wrong about this.

by Anonymousreply 9July 27, 2023 7:36 PM

My misogyny for straight women stems from the extreme homophobia I witnessed and received from women while I was closeted. They’re horrendous, just like straight men.

by Anonymousreply 10July 27, 2023 7:36 PM

I think gay men have a.problrm with being attitudinally respectful to women. With straight men, it's attitudinal and behavioural.

by Anonymousreply 11July 27, 2023 7:43 PM

R8 I see what you're saying, but indifference isn't equal to hatred. And misogyny is hatred of women.

I think most people are indifferent to things that don't directly impact them. Most straight people are indifferent to gay rights, for example. They're not against them, and if asked to vote on them, more would be for gay rights than against them, but they wouldn't be bothered either way. Yet that rarely gets called out.

by Anonymousreply 12July 27, 2023 7:43 PM

[quote]She's crazy, but she's not wrong about this.

She is.

Most straight men don't think of women as equals. They think of them as child bearing accessories or sex toys or treat them like children. We might "seem to be meaner" but that's only because we see them as equals.

by Anonymousreply 13July 27, 2023 7:50 PM

R13 It's not only that, but calling us WORSE than the demographic who rape and sexually assault women at worrying levels makes her seem either deranged or a troll.

by Anonymousreply 14July 27, 2023 7:53 PM

What makes you think Im a misogynist, you nasty bitch?

by Anonymousreply 15July 27, 2023 7:55 PM

And I'm not a racist, either. Got it?

There has always been a strand of misogyny amongst gay men. Behind the love of divas and lip synching there are some gay men resentful of lesbians in particular and repulsed by the female body.

And more recently the amount of misogyny directed at women over the sex/gender clash because women don’t want males in their spaces.

Gay men aren’t a physical threat to women but some of most misogynistic vitriol I’ve seen directed at women has come from gay men.

by Anonymousreply 17July 27, 2023 8:01 PM

She said this almost a decade ago, and I don’t think she’s been on television for two decades; who cares about this dumb quote?

That said: there is a sometimes latent sometimes potent friction between gay men and straight women. They like us when they are young, single, and want a male companion, but when a girl becomes a Frau certain prejudices in the back of their mind can come to the front.

They start blaming us for the spread of disease, they think we want to steal their sons or their husbands, they think we need to “grow up,” or “be saved.” Basically, our sexuality becomes more and more threatening to them, and no self-respecting gay man will let a woman get away with comments like that, so we repay hate with hate…and gay men so do love to call women “cunts,” so I get how she arrives at this in her mind.

by Anonymousreply 18July 27, 2023 8:06 PM

OP, what did you think of Barbie? Just curious.

by Anonymousreply 19July 27, 2023 8:08 PM

R18 I just wondered if people still agreed with her. You make a good point that many straight women send a lot of hate back in the direction of gay men, too.

R19 I haven't seen it.

by Anonymousreply 20July 27, 2023 8:24 PM

[quote]“I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange Speedo and take molly."

That bitch!

by Anonymousreply 21July 27, 2023 8:36 PM

R21 Haha. The colour was so weirdly specific. She must have had a particular gay guy in mind when she said that.

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2023 8:37 PM

She dated Marilyn Manson, so I would discount whatever she says.

Then again, Dita Von Teese was married to Marilyn Manson and she seems relatively normal.

by Anonymousreply 23July 27, 2023 8:37 PM

Ask for more clarification. You can order a Cameo by her for $54.99. Get back to us!

by Anonymousreply 24July 27, 2023 8:40 PM

And most straight women dress like whores with yoga pants and trash clothes and we are not clutching our pearls. I also don't complain about her hideous plastic surgery. .. looks like she hates herself. CUNT.

by Anonymousreply 25July 27, 2023 8:41 PM

She online bullied Jill Messick into committing suicide. She is a cunt to the 9th degree. Whatever happens to her is too good for her.

by Anonymousreply 26July 27, 2023 8:52 PM

R25, you're the kind of person she's talking about. You just hate all kinds of women.

by Anonymousreply 27July 29, 2023 2:53 PM

[quote] I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them.

Is there any group of people or any person, for that matter, with whom she DOESN'T have an indictment?

by Anonymousreply 28July 29, 2023 2:59 PM

Gay men love their girl friends cuz, they aren't competition and they can hit on their girl friends Boyfriends.

by Anonymousreply 29July 29, 2023 3:10 PM

R28 She probably thinks she's the only perfect person.

by Anonymousreply 30July 29, 2023 3:19 PM

What a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2023 3:28 PM

It’s mutual.

As a group, straight women are typically homophobic.

Like homophobic men are like the KKK of the gay community.

Homophobic women tend to be that racist neighbor who smiles in your face but calls you the N word behind your back or says things like “when I look at you, I don’t see color”.

The most homophobic things that have been said to me were by women.

by Anonymousreply 32July 29, 2023 3:37 PM

Who cares OP? She’s irrelevant now.

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2023 3:48 PM

R33 She was irrelevant then, too.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2023 4:11 PM

Actually - I believe she said these comments because she supported a boycott of the hotel and was allegedly stand up for the gay community.

Anyways - I have to wonder what her sphere of interaction has been with gay men, particularly in Hollywood. I would have to think that many actresses spend a lot of time with gay makeup artists, hair stylists, and wardrobe assistants.

THAT demo of the gay community is some of the most stereotypical and over-the-top wannabes who say ANYTHING to get attention and to curry favor with their clients. They'll put down other actresses' looks, makeup, hair, talent, etc. to make them feel better and also so the women don't have to.

The majority of gay men lead average lives. I doubt she's had much interactions with gay men who work in law, finance, academia, marketing, or regular office or service jobs.

And some of the most hurtful things I've ever heard about gays have without a doubt come from straight women. Many straight women also will vocalize 'that's so gay' about straight men doing ANYTHING they don't feel comports with what a 'real' man is.

And, let's not dismiss how much straight women use gay men as accessories and as a way to have safe male attention directed toward them while they act wild and outrageous. We've all seen sooo many straight women in gay bars where it's 'all attention on ME please'.

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2023 4:20 PM

Well, she kinda has a point. Gay men have been making fun of women since times immemorial. Drag queens for one. And just look at the many comments of disgust re. female genitalia that you can find daily on the DL.

And yes, she has a right to say whatever she wants. You don't have to like it or accept it.

by Anonymousreply 36July 29, 2023 4:29 PM

[quote]Gay men have been making fun of women since times immemorial. Drag queens for one.

Oh please.

by Anonymousreply 37July 29, 2023 4:38 PM

R36 - gay men make fun of EVERYONE. And women talk soooo much shit about other women. They're just not used to men (gay) vocalizing the same thing.

But - I will say - there is a small vocal demographic in the gay community where saying "Eww...fish!" and other tired statements is somehow considered humorous.

I run from those queens - they're toxic AF and usually the most insecure individuals you'll ever meet.

by Anonymousreply 38July 29, 2023 4:46 PM

So many Stinkfish in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 39July 29, 2023 4:54 PM

There you have it. ^^^

by Anonymousreply 40July 29, 2023 6:19 PM

I’m not sure how the observation regarding men who have fought to wear orange speedos on a float and take molly connects to misogyny. Seems more like she was looking to off gas some pent up homophobia and feel ok about being a homophobe by it by couching it in comments about misogyny. What an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 41July 29, 2023 6:31 PM

Rose, gay men calling some evil women "cunts" is NOT on the same level as straight men murdering their partners for petty reasons. It's sad that she is THAT dumb.

by Anonymousreply 42July 29, 2023 6:45 PM

[quote]And yes, she has a right to say whatever she wants. You don't have to like it or accept it.

R36 I didn't say she should be denied the right to say whatever she wants. I just said I think that particular thing she said was bullshit. If you believe she has the right to say what she wants, then surely I should also be afforded the same privilege? And yet if you thought that, you likely wouldn't have said the bit in quotes. :)

by Anonymousreply 43July 29, 2023 7:00 PM

I wasn't talking directly to you R43. I was just addressing something in the OP's post, not the OP.

by Anonymousreply 44July 29, 2023 9:41 PM

Who gives a fuck what this woman thinks?

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2023 9:58 PM

[quote] They like us when they are young, single, and want a male companion.

NEVER buy in to this.

by Anonymousreply 46July 29, 2023 10:05 PM

[quote] In 2021, McGowan claimed that Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of California governor Gavin Newsom, attempted to bribe her in order to silence her allegations on Weinstein. A spokesperson for Siebel Newsom called McGowan's claims a "complete fabrication"

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2023 10:39 PM

I have never known someone so inconsequential who can nonetheless command so much attention.

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2023 10:41 PM

R13, yes, she is wrong. Most men who beat, rape, and murder women are straight

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2023 10:55 PM

R36, do you label straight men as misandrist if they think gay sex is gross?

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2023 10:56 PM

R32 needs to get out more because straight men are way more homophobic than straight women

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2023 10:57 PM

Outwardly? Yes, they can be. In private might be a different thing. There is shit women let gay guys get away with that they wouldnt even dream off doing with straight men. That said, women, at least the straight ones, have to deal with straight men more than gay men, so that might be a reason why they are more concerned with misogyny in them.

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2023 10:58 PM

Just look at the Britney Spears threads. The woman is out living her best life, going to sporting events and meeting up with friends. But a bunch of misogynist pigs on this board want her imprisoned, drugged into a zombie, abused, and extorted. Give me a fucking break, gays hate women.

by Anonymousreply 53July 29, 2023 11:19 PM

[quote] Just look at the Britney Spears threads.

You sound like a lunatic.

[quote] Give me a fucking break, gays hate women.

Right, all this from a Britney thread. GTFO.

by Anonymousreply 54July 29, 2023 11:50 PM

Gay men are men. Men hate women and women have this in common with men. Men and women hate women.

by Anonymousreply 55July 30, 2023 12:12 AM

R53 I don’t think basing your opinion of an entire group of people from a Britney Spears thread is a sensible idea.
