Patricia Clarkson

Born to a medical school professor and a politician, her original plan was to become a speech pathologist, but "somehow" ended up with a Masters in Fine Arts from Yale.

From New Haven to New York, she instantly became a Broadway regular. This led to Brian De Palma casting her as Kevin Costner's wife in 1987's The Untouchables. Since then, she has become a dependable actress, from Jumanji to The Green Mile to Far from Heaven to All the King's Men.

Always poised, always elegant, and always patrician. Let's discuss the American actress Patricia Clarkson.

Loved her as Kelsey Grammer's perfect match in Frasier.

by Anonymousreply 1July 26, 2023 2:57 AM

Lover her in Law & Order as a socialite who ran the premier prostitution ring in New York City.

by Anonymousreply 2July 26, 2023 2:58 AM

Always liked her. I think the first thing I ever saw her in was a low-budget horror movie called "Wendigo", which was actually pretty good. I've followed her career ever since and will watch pretty much anything she's in—she's just a consistently good actress. I went to a musical showcase at Lincoln Center several years back while I was in grad school, and she sat behind me. I recognized the voice immediately.

A fun interview with her!

She’s a good friend of a friend of mine so I’ve been with her in social situations a few times. She’s delightful and has a keen sense of humor and a great laugh.

by Anonymousreply 5July 26, 2023 3:10 AM

She’ll be starring opposite Brian Cox in Long Day’s Journey Into Night in London next spring.

I loved her in the horrendous Sarah Michelle Gellar romcom Simply Irresistible. That’s the film where Betty Buckley was not only fired at a lunch break, she was personally escorted off the soundstage in Long Island City.

by Anonymousreply 6July 26, 2023 3:19 AM

Echoing what others are saying - when I see a movie in which she's been cast, it always piques my interest and she does a consistently good job with her roles. She's funny and you can definitely tell she'd make a great friend. She seems like a real down-to-earth type that doesn't take herself too seriously.

by Anonymousreply 7July 26, 2023 3:20 AM

Down to Earth, yet understated and elegant; she is a class act. Above the Hollywood fray of tabloids, multiple divorces, and substance abuse.

by Anonymousreply 8July 26, 2023 3:22 AM

She can also be a damn good dramatic actress as showcased here.

Loved her in The Station Agent and Six Feet Under.

Re: The Station Agent, I showed it to my elderly parents, who were captivated. Of Peter Dinklage’s performance, my mother said, “That little fellow is a good actor.” Oh, Mom. ❤️

by Anonymousreply 15July 26, 2023 3:40 AM

R15 I like both, but Clarkson is the better actress

by Anonymousreply 16July 26, 2023 3:47 AM

I liked her as the heroin addicted lesbian in High Art

by Anonymousreply 17July 26, 2023 3:50 AM

That voice! I could listen to her read the phone book. She's just one of those actors that never disappoints and is incapable of giving a bad performance.

by Anonymousreply 18July 26, 2023 3:53 AM
She’s no Patty Heaton.

But she *was* Agnes Moorehead.

Would have loved to have seen her as Blanche

by Anonymousreply 25July 26, 2023 4:37 AM

I love the frau I've been working so hard sore neck pose. Women do this all the time. Plus I think she would have made a better Dorothy.

I loved her as Tammy One on Parks and Rec.

She gives an excellent performance as usual in the recent drama Monica as the dying mother of a trans woman; the movie itself is a bit of a slog.

Far From Heaven, The Station Agent, and Sharp Objects feature her best work IMO. And she’s wonderful as the lead in under-recognized indies like Cairo Time, Learning to Drive, and The Dying Gaul. Sexy lady, too.

by Anonymousreply 28July 26, 2023 5:34 AM

Don't watch much TV or see many films, but she seems to pop up often in the few things I chose to watch, and she's reliably wonderful. The episodes of Six Feet Under with Patricia, Frances Conroy, and Kathy Bates were to die for.

by Anonymousreply 29July 26, 2023 5:52 AM

She was amazing in Far From Heaven and excellent paired with RDJ in Good Night and Good Luck.

I admit sometimes she's the sort of actress that I expect to be a bit better than she usually is. I also admit I don't know why.

by Anonymousreply 30July 26, 2023 6:08 AM

I like her in easy A

by Anonymousreply 31July 26, 2023 6:43 AM

In a different year she'd have been nominated for Lars And The Real Girl

State Of The Union with Brendan Gleeson is also worth a watch.

by Anonymousreply 32July 26, 2023 7:31 AM
It’s all hard, Ruth. We just made different choices.

As somebody who has a complex relationship with his sister, this is probably one of my favourite scenes of any television series. And Clarkson - always effortlessly great - is sublime.

She is the best. I wish I had seen her Blanche. She is certainly underused by the industry, she can do it all.

by Anonymousreply 34July 26, 2023 8:14 AM

She was wasted in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She had that kind of Woody Allen dialogue where the character voices banalities that a narrator then repeats and explicates.

by Anonymousreply 35July 26, 2023 8:58 AM

Perfectly cast in Sharp Objects as this Demeter-like spiteful, overbearing and ethereal mother. Her "look what you did" at Amy Adams as she pricks her finger while pruning roses still makes me laugh.

And the voice... pure class.

by Anonymousreply 36July 26, 2023 10:00 AM

R6

I’ve never heard this story - do go on…

by Anonymousreply 37July 26, 2023 10:04 AM

I got a Cameo video from Joanna Cassidy and she told me that Patricia shouldn't have won in the year when they were up against each other. I was kind of surprised she said it that openly.

by Anonymousreply 38July 26, 2023 10:15 AM

^Won the Emmy (for SFU)

by Anonymousreply 39July 26, 2023 10:21 AM

She was terrific on Home Improvement.

by Anonymousreply 40July 26, 2023 10:25 AM

I second her performance as Greta in High Art - the heroin-addicted Fassbinder actress. She is fucking sublime in that. When she comes stumbling out of the bathroom after shooting up with that mad glassy-eyed stare.

Also the sex scene with Ally Sheedy. Im a gay guy but it was pretty hot. Clarkson was so sultry and ravishing in that.

I was at Citroen, the bar over Joe Allen, one night and she was there with a few gay guys. Her laugh is delightful. They were gossiping, cracking jokes and chatting with the table next to them. As she left she said to me and my partner “Have a lovely evening boys!”

I know I’m gushing but she is a real class act and a fabulous actor. Love her.

by Anonymousreply 41July 26, 2023 10:26 AM

She is like Bonnie Hunt, you can always count on her to make you laugh, even in the worst material.

by Anonymousreply 42July 26, 2023 1:16 PM

She and Tucci made a great married couple in Easy A.

by Anonymousreply 43July 26, 2023 1:36 PM

The Let's Discuss Mary is back.

by Anonymousreply 44July 26, 2023 2:49 PM

She should have won an Emmy for Sharp Objects.

by Anonymousreply 45July 26, 2023 2:54 PM

She should have won the Oscar

by Anonymousreply 46July 26, 2023 5:59 PM

She was fantastic in Lisa Cholodenko's. High Art

by Anonymousreply 47July 26, 2023 6:41 PM

R40, most Gen Z people can't even remember Home Improvement. Idiot.

by Anonymousreply 48July 26, 2023 6:42 PM

I too like her a lot. She usually elevates the material (though role in House of Cards was horrible, but that was probably the script).

That said, she is one curious case where she looks older than her age. I was very surprised to learn that at time of the Dying Gaul in 2005 she was mid-forties only, thought she was well into her fifties by then.

by Anonymousreply 49July 26, 2023 8:11 PM

She reminds me of those women way past their expiration date who think they are still hot 'n sexy. When they actually never even were. Naughty, flirty, hair-tossy.

by Anonymousreply 50July 26, 2023 8:23 PM

She has *great* bone structure and a signature voice. A bit softer in her ingenue days...

Looks like Cate Blanchett

by Anonymousreply 52July 26, 2023 8:58 PM

I don't much care for Clarkson's on-screen presence, which seems a bit self-conscious and arty to me, but I may just have missed her most natural performances. Anyway, I've never heard a negative word about her as a person. She seems to be a very nice, funny and kind person.

by Anonymousreply 53July 26, 2023 9:35 PM

She did well in [italic]Good Night and Good Luck[/italic] playing Robert Downey, Jr.'s wife. They were believable as a couple who were hot for each other, and she gave him some gravitas.

by Anonymousreply 54July 26, 2023 10:13 PM

She always seems so classy, so it was a hoot to see her in the follow-up to the iconic and hilarious "Dick in a Box" skit on SNL. She was one of the MILF's that Justin Timberlake and/or Andy Samberg was hitting on.

She only had a bit part in The Green Mile, but it made an impact, despite the tragic "dying" makeup they put on her.
She was one of the MILF's that Justin Timberlake and/or Andy Samberg was hitting on.

That's not what's going on in that sketch.

by Anonymousreply 56July 26, 2023 10:47 PM

Met her a bunch of times through my association with the Vineyard Theater in NYC. Great person. No airs or attitude at all. We are on a first name basis and everyone calls her Patty. She lives in the West Village and you can sometimes bump into her walking her dog.

by Anonymousreply 57July 27, 2023 12:23 AM

I like her. By golly, I REALLY like her!!

by Anonymousreply 58July 27, 2023 1:02 AM

So weird seeing this now. We were both waiting at the same crosswalk in Chelsea yesterday afternoon. Bucket hat and sunglasses, but that profile was unmistakable. She was giving someone a dressing down on the phone in that velvety voice of hers. Impeccable manicure.

by Anonymousreply 59July 27, 2023 4:57 PM

She was totally wasted in She Said.

by Anonymousreply 60July 27, 2023 8:58 PM

R60, can you blame her?

by Anonymousreply 61July 27, 2023 10:27 PM

I'm sorry to report that she was dreadful in the Kennedy Center STREETCAR. Since in theory she had everything the part needs, I'm guessing that she was terribly misdirected by Garry Hynes. A shame.

by Anonymousreply 62July 27, 2023 10:41 PM

Loved her in Sharp Objects.

She's great.

by Anonymousreply 63July 27, 2023 10:44 PM

Adored her in The Untouchables. I would want to come home to bang that.

She seems sweet

by Anonymousreply 65August 4, 2023 3:26 AM

R65, I like her, but that seems an odd word to describe her. “Sweet” makes me think of someone simple and guileless. Patricia strikes me as someone of great complexity.

by Anonymousreply 66August 4, 2023 3:36 AM

She is fab-u-lous.

Is she another addition to the short list of actors everybody on DL likes?

by Anonymousreply 67August 4, 2023 3:44 AM

I see her around the West Village quite a bit, socializing. She seems to have a lot of friends.

by Anonymousreply 68August 4, 2023 3:47 AM

She's amazing

by Anonymousreply 69August 4, 2023 3:47 AM

Like me, she's charming, vivacious, witty, and much-loved. Light and breezy--but with intelligence. And edge! I like her very, very much!

by Anonymousreply 70August 4, 2023 3:54 AM

R70 yes, but people like me...

by Anonymousreply 71August 4, 2023 4:10 AM

Fucking LOVE. And the poster who mentioned Clarkcson's distinctive voice...I like it too.

R72 is Far from Heaven a good movie? I have always wanted to watch it but haven't.

Great cast: Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Viola Davis, Jams Rebhorn, and Patricia Clarkson.

by Anonymousreply 73August 4, 2023 1:09 PM

R62 I can see how her take on Blanche would lead to an interpretation that wouldn't work within the context of the play. I read that new book about the different actresses who took on Blanche over the years-- Patricia was included and had some interesting insights.

by Anonymousreply 74August 4, 2023 1:21 PM
