"The Dark Mirror": Dim Suspense Benefits from Olivia de Havilland's Dual Performance

Just saw 1946's "The Dark Mirror" for the first time. While Olivia de Havilland gives skilled and subtle performances as twin sisters--one good, one bad, natch!--the story is pretty contrived. Lew Ayres is the psychiatrist who determines which one is a sociopathic killer, and Thomas Mitchell as the cop on the case. Fair film noir fun, but watch for Olivia, who didn't play a villain again until "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte."

Here's an excellent, free 1080p copy of the mild film noir, "The Dark Mirror," worth watching for Olivia...

R1- Oh, thank you! This movie is just the kind of film noir that I love and I have never seen it! 😘

Yawn.

I think Ann Jillian did a television remake of this movie. Love Ann, but it was pretty wretched.

Though Loni Anderson was the queen of bad TV remakes in the '80s, it was neither she or Ms. Jillian--it was Jane Seymour in the "Mirror" remake. Stick with Olivia!

Not as much fun as "A Stolen Life," if only because the latter inspired the very funny Carol Burnett parody "A Swiped Life"

If I were an identical twin, I would make [italic]sure[/italic] my twin and I often wore identical outfits as adults, and matching necklaces with our names printed on them (so people who knew which was which).

reply 6, I enjoyed "A Stolen Life" more because it was very romantic, young Glenn Ford was hot, and Bette's bad twin wasn't totally wicked... then there's "Dead Ringer from '63, bonkers!

Dead Ringer is so great for many reasons, including that almost all of the cast are shown constantly smoking (even Estelle Winwood as an Alta California duenna named "DoƱa Anna" wearing a black lace mantilla).

I had barely been out of the army and was back home in Steubenville, Ohio when I saw this at the movies, OP. I was captivated by it!

by Anonymousreply 10July 26, 2023 2:02 AM

Did Lew Ayres only play physicians?

by Anonymousreply 11July 26, 2023 2:38 AM

My bad. KILLER IN THE MIRROR was actually a remake of DEAD RINGER.

R11 I thought he was sexy as Hepburn’s hot mess of a brother in Holiday. By then he had become a big star as the German soldier in All Quiet on the Western Front.

Here's a so-so copy of the so-so remake of "The Dark Mirror," with Jane Seymour, Stephen Collins as The Shrink, and Vincent Gardenia as The Cop. Was made for Lifetime, natch!

Olivia is such a dull actress. They needed to use the name necklaces to differentiate the two sisters. Bette didn't need such devices!

by Anonymousreply 15July 26, 2023 2:55 PM

IMO, Joan Fontaine was the dull acting sister, her MO was one arched eyebrow and a slight smirk...

by Anonymousreply 16July 26, 2023 2:57 PM

[quote]Olivia is such a dull actress.

Poor, dear Olivia...she tried so hard to make this movie work.

If only they had cast a more versatile and talented actress to play her sister in this movie...it could have been absolutely stellar.

by Anonymousreply 17July 26, 2023 3:01 PM

Joan aged into playing sensual types which I could not see Olivia in. About the only ODH performance I can stand is The Heiress for which I think William Wyler deserves all the credit.

by Anonymousreply 18July 26, 2023 3:02 PM

Yes, Joan was certainly a hot piece in "Island in the Sun!"

by Anonymousreply 19July 26, 2023 3:05 PM

Olivia and Jane Wyman were both great actresses but they were sexless.

by Anonymousreply 20July 26, 2023 3:28 PM

To be fair, the effect of the plot depends on the viewer never being entirely sure (until the end) which sister is which. If Olivia had played them more individually, the plot wouldn't have worked.
