How is she going to fit all her side characters, his hospitalization, the sessions with his therapist, the nick/sarah beach scene, the i love you scene. i dont want to be alarmist but if she doesn’t get a 4th season, Charlie's story would get the back burner treatment. I have no idea how they would be able to do it properly if it has to be wrapped in one season.

I’ve been thinking that this season is almost definitely going to end in a cliffhanger for a while. The first season was obviously written in a way where it worked as a stand-alone series, a bit to the detriment of logic (the walking off and big cinematic kiss are great, but the entire school is dumb if they don’t suspect anything). This time they have the freedom for a cliffhanger with the guaranteed third season.

I'm not dooming and glooming, but not exactly sure what people expected from S2 when it was just going to be Vol 3. All Charlie's stuff comes later. Alice also added more Nick scenes that were much later in the comic too and the added dad scene. Think he's mostly going to be supporting Nick and suffering in the background for the season before Nick finally notices he actually needs help. Just too much going on for them to get too much into it. I'd guess Prom is the last episode.

I agree with r507 about waiting for the DLer input, even as someone who has very low expectations for the material they’re giving joe. But tbh since we found out this was going to be volume 3 focused I’ve come to think joe stans need to accept he’s not likely to ever get the main attention in this show. Nick had the coming out storyline, which Kit played excellently and opposite Olivia in s1. S2 sounds like (waiting on input) another season where nicks struggles and thus the big acting moments are in the forefront, and Charlie’s are backburner. S3 I do think and hope will have a lot of Charlie storylines, but I think we need to be prepared for Emmy voters seeing Kit opposite Olivia in “love can’t cure mental illness” and giving it to him.

Joe has marvel, he’ll have an amazing career, and Kit deserves every ounce of praise he’s gotten, but I don’t think it’s likely HS will ever give Joe his full “credit” so to speak.

So Charlie is going to get sidelined this season? Well, there goes my interest to watch this new season.

Besties wake up, a very DL Season 2 review just dropped.

Needless to say, spoilers ahead! Mostly general, though if you have specific questions I will try to answer if it doesn’t seem too “leaky.” I’m also not adverse to dropping more detail closer to August 3. Came with receipts attached so you know I’m legit.

I will say most of the concerns we’ve had about season 2 are thankfully unfounded. Nick and Charlie are still the main focus. Elle’s new friends barely show face, and the time and attention spent on the other characters add value to the story - especially Darcy’s as we did deeper into TarDarcy. I felt Kizzy really stepped up this season. The exception to this is Isaacs story. It absolutely was just thrown in to give aroace representation and didn’t contribute anything to the series itself. Thankfully it wasn’t much screen time. DL fave Bradley was… meh. Certain Charlie scenes we discussed about possibly being given to other characters were not.

Let’s get right into Bash/Ben. I could be biased but he really has the most punchable face - how did I not notice before? I counted about 10 total minutes of screen time for him, I know hstwt is going to have a meltdown on that one. The scenes written with Ben worked, but also could have easily gone without. Other characters could have found ways to add to the drama in those scenes. I can see how it would be possible for him to show back up on season 3, but where we left his story it’s not absolutely necessary r379. It does feel like Alice almost tried to head down the redemption route at the end (even though she said she wouldn’t) so we’ll see. The solitaire scene in question was not in this season.

Can’t talk about Ben without mentioning Imogen. Yep, you guessed what those two are up to. Quite honestly could have cut her out too and then Ben definitely wouldn’t have been needed. For anyone concerned, while she is still portrayed as a close friend of Nick’s, she doesn’t take over for Tara.

Tao annoyed me in season 1 but I found his goofiness quite endearing here. Lots of TaoElle for any fans out there, it’s sweet.

Tao and Nick have a few sentimental scenes together as well.

The amount of Ajayi/Farouk scenes were just right. Love Fisayo but I wasn’t really feeling Nima as Farouk.

It’s an absolute tragedy how little Tori is on this season.

Kits French was impressive, to my American ears at least.

The coloring was much more flattering to Joe this season but frequently made anyone Asian or ginger look a bit jaundiced.

The overall run time is slightly longer this season. Looking back most of Season 1 ran 27-32 mins. These are 30-35 with credits.

R365 the hickey scene closely mirrors the comics. I would have appreciated additional angles for that one, but Joe was fucking hot.

R379 The chemistry is INSANE. So palpable even through the stupid embargo watermarks. there are many, many kissing scenes. I think I counted 10 in the first half of episode 1 (kind of a montage). Some are sweet and wholesome if the mood calls for but plenty of passionate ones too. The ice cream scene in Paris - oh oh oh! Really hope Alice releases the selfies Nick and Charlie take for instagram like they did with the snow and photo booth scenes. Overall they didn’t shy away from being horny teenage boys, even though it didn’t venture past kissing. And yes, Kit absolutely throws Joe around a bit and picks him up several times. Charlie straddling Nick after a pillow fight in episode 7 is everything. The size difference is very noticeable and insanely hot.

Speaking of, Kit has a shirtless scene. Actually Will does too. Ohhhh but Kit.

R379 I wouldn’t say it’s the Nick Nelson show exactly, and Charlie is not sidelined - he has many strong moments that could be used for Joe during awards season. Particularly his interaction with Ben in episode 7 and heart to heart with Nick in episode 8 (Kit is excellent in this one too.) Charlie’s growing confidence is also showcased. But it really only starts to scratch the surface on his ED, seems the heavier stuff that will be in his favor won’t be until season 3. The imagery of the bad thoughts Charlie had from the 1st season mostly happen with Nick. And seeing as he spends most of this season coming out again and again and again, while dealing with his daddy issues, he does still feels like the focus. Now that it’s all out of the way though I do think season 3 will be Charlie-centric.

Hstwt and fans of the comics will be happy to know most major moments are included. As best as I recall, the only missing one people will probably be upset about is Charlie telling Nick he wants to push him against a wall. That scene is still almost identical to the comic, minus that dialogue.

The Soundtrack has way more songs than season 1, though many of them are French. Even scored a T Swift song. I believe very recently someone here posted their dislike for baby queen, particularly Colours of you. My apologies in advance for what’s to come there. And of course Wasia has a familiar song to close the last episode.

I question whether it will keep its pristine rating on rotten tomatoes, only because it’s not shiny and new anymore. But I think it will still be highly regarded by critics, and most fans will satisfied with how everything was handled (except Ben.) Hope this helps alleviate some of the fears we’ve had.

Saying this as someone who completely understands why there's dissatisfaction with the meat of Charlie storyline being a third season thing, Charlie being super supportive of Nick (and Tao now) is part of his downward spiral. Alice said in an early interview that Charlie neglects himself in worrying about Nick. From what DLer implied, it sounds like the other shoe drops at the end of the season. I like the idea of his story simmering and then boiling over and setting up the next season, but I get why others wouldn't.

I’m sure Joe lost some content to the editing process because Patrick and Netflix would have wanted to maximise Kit but I suspect S3 will be the “dark” season with Joe in the lead. I actually think Kit and Joe were pretty evenly split S1, so S2 Kit and then S3 Joe makes sense to me. But definitely understand the disappointment. I wanted more for him too. At least with the story in S3 he will have so much acting experience now he will be unstoppable

Eh, I can't say I'm surprised by the sidelining of Charlie. I got into HS relatively late and I remember my early vague impression of the show from reviews and promo was that it was mostly about Nick. I had really low expectations of Joe's portrayal of Charlie and he ended up being my favourite and the one I much more closely related to. I think just generally, predominantly male critics have a hard time relating to characters like Charlie. He's more femme coded (the assault and subsequent rescue from Nick, the protective best friend, the soft voice, the aggressive cuteness) and he's not trying to be any other way. Sensitive rugby lad Nick is much more of a relatable character trope and gay male critics especially go crazy for that sort of thing.

On top of that, as much as Alice might feel defensive of her characters and expect us as fans to say "Don't worry, we understand you still love Charlie as much as Nick", at the end of the day she sold her material to Netflix who are going to want to milk the Kit/Nick engagement for all its worth. Heartstopper is not going to be the show that gives Joe Locke his flowers and it's time for us to stop expecting that. He'll get there eventually because he's already such a fantastic young actor but it'll be in his future career not in a show that already has already placed its entire success model on Kit's shoulders.

Obviously I am a little bitter about it all but I'm just going to ignore the stuff around buzz/accolades etc and just focus on Joe's amazing performance which I know he'll continue to give.

Really think everyone is acting like joes more experience means he’ll get more credit. Critics and awards are lazy. Two seasons of Kit getting all the hype? They won’t give Joe a second look.
