How Jason Aldean's 'Try That in a Small Town' became a political controversy
Country Music Television (CMT) says it will no longer air the music video "Try That In a Small Town" by Jason Aldean after critics of the video said it contained lyrics that glorified gun violence and conveyed traditionally racist ideas.
A CMT spokesperson confirmed the move to NPR on Thursday, but offered no comment on the reasoning.
Since the video's release on Friday, it's emerged as a familiar kind of political litmus test, with interpretations of its message often falling along voting divides.

The fact he purposely chose to show BLM protests is the problem. I am loathed to agree with Whoopi Goldberg but as she pointed out, the BLM protests were about protecting the rights and lives of Black People and you turned it into a song about shooting them, preaching the Qanon mantra that the government is coming for their guns.

The other thread was mysteriously closed for some reason (hmm...), but here's a good point that was made in it:
[italic]The song, coming from this guy, is fraudulent on its face, since he’s not even from a small town to begin with. The video was filmed at the site of a 1940’s race riot and the 1927 lynching of a black man, and is rife with clips of BLM protests. If he's such a cop-loving patriot, then why not include clips of the cops being beaten to a pulp on Jan 6th? Why not include clips of bigots marching through Charlottesville carrying torches or running a car through a group of anti-racism protestors and ultimately killing a girl? Why not include footage from one of your own concerts in which multiple people were killed by the very weapon glorified in your song’s lyrics?
While there may not be anything overtly racist in the song itself, the lyrics certainly evoke imagery of the sundown town era of the still-virulently racist South, and of a time when black people had to travel through those “small towns” with a green book telling them where they could and could not go.[/italic]

You have to admit that there is currently a war against the right of self-defense, for better or for worse, so that would have a lot to do with it. Aldean put himself in the line of fire by suggesting that people in a small town wouldn’t just acquiesce to their town being destroyed. That’s currently considered wrongthink.

MAGA deplorables and racists use "I feared for my life" as a get-out-of-jail free card when they gun down black people. Just watched the video. Aside from the message, it’s not a great song. Not very catchy, the lyrics are very repetitive, and the tune is very generic country.
I didn’t notice anything overtly offensive in the song (didn’t listen that closely, though), but the video definitely made it so.
The message that a lot of the BLM protesting was objectionable and not something to be tolerated (but that doesn’t mean vigilante justice) might have been OK if done differently, but that would be challenging. And why would a white country singer think he should go there? Which is why I don’t think this was something innocent that got executed poorly.
The video went beyond criticizing BLM by making the song an explicit threat. I expected the video to be not as bad as people are saying. If anything, it was worse.
I know there are rap songs that glorify violence, but are there rap songs or videos that suggest that white people and those that support them had better watch their step in black neighborhoods? Even if there are, that is different (but not OK).
I think there are parallels to ESG investing (I’m using this example because it’s less emotionally loaded, I’m not equating racism and environmentalism). It’s not ethically wrong to have the opinion that ESG factors are difficult to measure, there are unintended consequences to incorporating them, the drag on economies isn’t worth it, etc. But when people want to create or allocate to specifically anti-ESG investments you have to wonder about their character. You can not believe in man made global warming and be a good person. You can believe it’s too late to do anything and be a good person. But if you are burning tires in your backyard to piss off your neighbor with a save the planet bumper sticker, you are an asshole.

R65, you are probably an asshole but you have a point about my post. I put that poorly and was trying too hard to preclude objections that this or that rap song is not offensive. It is potentially different, but including acknowledgment of that was unnecessary.

Why is rap music included in this discussion? Even if there was agreement that rap glorifies violence, that agreement would not nullify or cancel out the depravity of Aldean's song.
Equally, hating blacks doesn't elevate the hater. To the bigot troll who keeps defending Aldean, we know you fear black men. Maybe you think black men have bigger dicks or that they could handily beat your pasty ass (without a gun) - who's to say? You're obvious.

From what I saw during the 2020 BLM protests, the vast majority of those causing destruction, riots, and violence were White (likely progressive) people. The peaceful protestors were mostly Black. Just saw his video and the main individuals highlighted during the BLM protests were, in fact, all of those crazy White folks who were fucking shit up. Mostly in our communities which...don't get me started on that.
But of course, the media tried to make it seem like it was us doing it when in reality it was those of "the other persuasion." Kinda makes you wonder about their true motives. Did they really care about racial injustice or were they just using the BLM movement to raise hell? A lot of those (mostly White) kids came from the suburbs into urban areas to start riots. Facts.

Whatever the case may be, music has the ability to influence emotions and, to a degree, behavior. This song is basically "Knuck If You Buck" for White supremacists. People have actually been shot in the club when that song came on because it as undertones of incitement of violence. Many clubs refuse to play it to this day because it tends to start fights. The same applies to this record. Aldean knew exactly what he was doing. Sorry. Not sorry.

I come from a small town. Smaller towns of with population of 700 can 25 minute ride away from me. They are sundown towns, but no one speaks of it. A town will be majority black but the next town over will be majority white. These racists down here love to say: "you don't know the history," but some of us unindoctrinated, or with a shred of critical thinking may know otherwise.
The song is an attempt (of many) for all those bumpkins to feel better about themselves about living in their shitholes. I'm from one: our community has been hollowed out for decades, by white flight, by climate change, by the total collapse of local industry, by gun violence, by preventable disease.
Frankly, I don't even recognize the "small-town" in Mississippi I grew up in.
You are dealing with people trying to find small-town dilapidation charming; I find it embarrassing. At least they haven't figured out that we own guns, too.

"Oh, Dearing" my grammar, but didn't that dude that DL loves that shot those assholes live in a "small-town?" Isn't Uvalde a small town? The town near the river where where Emmitt Till was beaten into human pulp is a small town, too.
Our governor in Mississippi tweets about how this song was #1 on iTunes (that's a different laugh, when five songs on the chart are various remixes of one kpop song). Meanwhile, our rural hospitals are closing, both cities and towns don't have clean water, and private insurance is pulling out of protecting at-risk (i.e. small, Black) communities from natural disaster.

All conservatism begins with lies about history. This song is part of that. Emporia, Kansas was once the most liberal town in the country, a beacon for people who wanted government to better people's l ives. There has been a non-stop right-wing propaganda effort beginning with World War I, when southern bigot Woodrow Wilson hired 75,000 speakers to tour the country lying for the government, to make rural people into morons, and it has worked.

"The song is an attempt (of many) for all those bumpkins to feel better about themselves about living in their shitholes."
Yes. It's an attempt to convince themselves that although their shitholes may be a meth-cooking "Sundown Town", where domestic violence is routine, people are so afraid of their psycho neighbors that they think they need home arsenals to stay alive until dawn, and people mysteriously vanish while in police custody, that "crime" is really an urban problem.
That what goes on in this here shithole isn't actually "crime", even if people end up dead, it's not "crime", not unless a black person is arrested for it.

I think there's an expectation that rap is mostly bluster and bullshit. I'm not familiar with country music. Are vaguely violent titles common? 'Try That in a Small Town' and ... what? The good ole boys are going to kick your ass? You'll get your head blown off?
I saw something on Reddit saying most school shootings happen in small towns leaving those communities devastated. Not a good ole boy in sight to stop it. Those lyrics are just as stupid and hollow as any rap song.
I don't know whether anyone needs those sentiments right now. But it's all about $$$ in the end. His record company will be pleased that such a lame, dreary song is generating so much controversy.

There is not a war on self-defense there is a war on USING self-defense as a means to commit crimes. George Zimmerman is the poster boy for that. He killed an unarmed kid and got off because he felt threatened. Florida and other states have a stand-your-ground law where you can legally kill someone just by saying you felt threatened. People will scoff and say that is not true but it is. Happens all the time. Tell me what happened to the old guy who shot a black kid point blank for knocking on his door and asking for directions? I just saw in Ohio a truck driver was chased for 30 miles because he was missing a mud flap. He was so scared he called the highway patrol to come out. He stood there unarmed and they released a police dog on him.

I absolutely loathe this song, but even so that doesn't make any sense as a criticism that it is somehow "fraudulent" because it does not accord with his life experience.
When you sing the lyrics to a song, you assume a persona. It doesn't have to be from directly autobiographical experience.
No one thought when Madonna sang "Papa Don't Preach" that she really was pregnant and her father was pressuring her to have an abortion, or that Terry Jacks was claiming he was literally dying when he sang "Seasons in the Sun."

Country singer’s heavily criticised song Try That in a Small Town has been streamed 11.7m times while the video has boomed online
The controversy around the country singer Jason Aldean’s latest single, whose lyrics and video feature threats of violence toward police protesters, has boosted its profile.
In the week since backlash to the song brewed online and amid fellow country artists, streams of Aldean’s Try That in a Small Town have risen 999%, from 987,000 to 11.7m, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sales of the song have also increased from 1,000 last week to 228,000, according to the music data company Luminate.

I grew up in a small town. Let's compare and contrast two recent "cancellations" shall we?
Case 01: A trans person does a 15-second piece of sponsored content for a mass market beer. The Right is *still mad about it. People videotaped themselves stomping on, shooting and otherwise destroying the beer. The trans person had to go into hiding due to the avalanche of death threats. Right-wing political figures took up the "cause" and are now threatening the beer company with "investigations" and whatnot.
The Left does - not much. There's online defenses of the trans person but no elected officials get involved. The "woke corporation" folds in an instant.
Case 02: A country singer releases a song/video threatening violence against BLM protestors and vowing to murder anyone who is weird in his imagined hometown The Left tweets some things. Others write Op-eds. It's possible left-wing politicians denounce the song but don't threaten the singer's career or the singer's record company. The country singer's tour continues. There's protests but nothing violent or scary. He doesn't go into hiding. He keeps his record contract. One radio network said "no thanks" but in this era, that's not too effectual. People can access music in 1000 ways.
The Right - goes apeshit again. This time, performatively buying up copies of the song. One imagines they are sad they don't get to shoot anything and put it on TikTok.

Sure, there's an obscure Talking Heads song from 45 years ago that says flyover country sucks but there's also literally an entire TV network whose sole product is movies about stressed-out, high-strung city women moving to the country to find love and a real men.

R213, you know that’s not realistic. Most stressed out, high strung women probably LEAVE the country for the big city because their career goals don’t include being a farm hand or general store clerk.

R213, the request was:
[quote] I'd love to know of one song, movie, TV show, anything who's premise is that living in a big city is in every way better than a small town.
I posted one. What's your beef?

City songs about the country: “the country is boring, the people are boring. I like the city”
Country songs about the city: “people who live in cities aren’t really people”
Not exactly equivalent. And let’s face it: complaining about “city” people is, in America anyway, usually just a coded way of complaining about black, brown, gay and “un-American” people in the city.
There’s the old country mouse/city mouse cliché that’s as old as Aesop, and then there is this song.

Incest is rampant in small towns. I’m sure it is in cities, also, but don’t act like there are zero crimes or abominations in small towns.

Well, yes, Mrs. George Jones; perhaps we SHOULD look at the history of any specific site before filming there. Unless you think that maybe Yusuf/Cat Stevens could make a video at the site of the WTC without you or Aldean or your fellow Bumpkins saying Word 1 of opposition.
People yapping against "Woke" are trying to bully and intimidate and bend others to their will. If they can no longer depend on community support for lynchings, they will pass laws allowing for discrimination by businesses; they will close school libraries; they will re-define Black American Studies; they will gerrymander voting precincts and defy court orders to undo them; and they will stonewall investigations into White on Black violent crime until forced to investigate.
My new slogan: "Democrats Are Woke Because Republicans Are a Nightmare."

Thank you, R204...we need a little MTM every so often.
Still love the look of the old lady with the blue scarf over her perm at the end!!!
Jason Aldean's song reflects the serious divisions in the country between urban/suburban/rural; red state/blue state; conservative/liberal; black/white to name a few
There's controversy too about the white, straight male who did his own take on Tracy Chapman's song, and it reflects all those divisions plus gay/straight.
Somehow we need to overcome this by not reducing everything to neat categories while still recognizing the importance of those categories.
I just don't know how the fuck to do it! And that scares me.

Well that's easy. You try to treat people as individuals but if you see a certain type of person walking on the street at night, you always cross the street to get away from them.

Conservatives freaked out at Bud Light for Dylan Mulvaney. Bud Light lost tens of millions of dollars. Conservatives freaked out about Target Oride merch. Target lost many millions of dollars. Liberals freaked out about this racist video from Jason Aldean. His shitty song that was released months ago is now number one in the country. Conservatives 3/3 wins. Liberals 0/3. This country is fucked.

r245 not really. Bud Light fucked themselves. WHo drinks beer? Rednecks. Piss them off lose business. Target didn't lose anything. Conservatives made that song #1 by buying it to push it to #1 the same way they made DON THE CON Jr.s a NY Times best seller. They bought thousands of copies to get it to #1.

I think what it means is that all the Klan Grannies mooing about the "woke mob!" and calling college students "literal Maoists!" are all full of shit.
If you want to see a mob, ask Dylan Mulvaney. Ask the Dixie Chicks. Ask the Capitol police.
