Tech exec who ‘trashed’ his body for 23 years now spends $2 million a year to reverse the damage

Bryan Johnson, the California tech founder known for his efforts to reverse the biological processes of aging, admits on Twitter he has not always been rigid about his quest for longevity.

“My body and mind were trashed in every way for 23 years,” he writes. “Chronic depression, obesity, terrible sleep, raising 3 kids, startup founder/CEO grind culture behavior (and even growing up w/ excess sugar, sun exposure, junk food).”

In his “Project Blueprint,” 45-year-old Johnson religiously monitors his eating, exercise, and sleep. He also takes a range of tests to measure the age of his organs. According to the results he makes public, he has slowed the aging process by about 31 years, and has bodily inflammation 66% below the average 10-year-old.

This month, Johnson told Fortune Editor in Chief Alyson Shontell at our Brainstorm Tech conference in Deer Valley, Utah that he commits to about 100 protocols each day to reverse his biological age, including taking 61 pills each day, eating 70 pounds of vegetables every month, and adhering to 8:30 p.m. bedtimes. It’s costing him $2 million a year.

“No matter how extreme I’ve had to be, no matter how eccentric people perceive me to be, because I’m outside the norms, demonstrating that age can be arrested would change everything,” the former CEO of Braintree said at the conference.

Johnson admits he’s the happiest he’s ever been and relies on his team of doctors and results to tell him the next steps.

“My mind was always a rascal and doing things that were self destructive in nature. I flipped it and I said I’m going to put my body in charge of me,” he said at the conference.

He adds, “I pity the previous version of me that was on this roller coaster searching for his next hit all the time.”

Since beginning his longevity journey about two years ago, he touts he is at “near perfect whole body health markers,” based on measures of his biofluids, among other things. He wants to “inspire” people, so they know it’s not too late to change routines.

However, to many, he is still a “walking experiment,” as longevity expert and Blue Zones LLC founder Dan Buettner previously told Fortune.

If you mean a DLer 45 which in regular people years would be 67, then sure.

Otherwise, no.

Not to mention, he's unsurprisingly a terrible person. Look at how his face has aged in a few short years. He's clearly had work done on his face - don't give me "reversing" aging to explain the difference in his face.

I believe in leading a healthy lifestyle, but anything taken to an excess is excess. Just eat mindfully, with some awareness of nutrition, get regular rest, be active physically , preferably daily, without going crazy, exercise your mind, make and keep friends, and most importantly, laugh heartily as often as you can. You're still gonna die when it's your time, but you will likely be healthier for the bulk of your life than people who don't do any of these things. But I'm speaking from the perspective of someone whose mother is 101, so other people might have a different perspective.

I know that I want to be healthy, and sharp and good mobility in my old age rather that be housebound and trying to extend my life regardless of quality of life. I'd rather live to a very healthy and active 85 rather than a bedridden and unhealthy 98.

[quote] but died at 79 from ALS ,which he suspected may have been triggered by the time he spent in the oxygen-deprived atmosphere of Biosphere 2

Nonsense. While researches have yet to determine what causes ALS, being “oxygen deprived” isn’t one of them.

"Unfortunately for Walford and for the scientific community, Roy Walford died at the age of 79 on April 27, 2004 in Santa Monica, CA due to complications from ALS. It is possible that the "nerve damage" Walford claimed to have suffered because of oxygen deprivation in Biosphere II was actually the beginnings of the dreaded motor neuron disease. It is also possible Walford's restricted diet allowed him to escape the ravages of this disease for longer than he might have otherwise. Nevertheless, Walford's dream has not died with him -- his work helped to spark an interest in gerontology research that has implications to help treat many human diseases and lead us to a greater understanding of the aging process."

[quote] Controversial tech millionaire says his father, 70, is now biologically 46 thanks to injections of his 'super blood'

Tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson claims he has slowed his father's rate of aging by 25 years by giving him transfusions of his "super blood."

"My super blood reduced my Dad's age by 25 years," Johnson said Wednesday in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The multi-millionaire, who is known for his controversial anti-aging treatments, said his father was injected with one liter of his plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood.

Since then, he said, his 70-year-old Dad, who had been aging at the rate of a 71-year-old before the injection, has been aging like a 46-year-old.

"I am my dad's blood boy," Johnson said on X.

Johnson was careful to frame his own findings. In the post on X, he noted that he based his assessment of his father's aging on one biomarker, which is a medical sign that can be picked up by tests. Johnson didn't state which marker he was using.

Though biomarkers are a useful tool to hint at what's going on in the body, they aren't an accurate measure of the body's aging on their own, lead physician, Oliver Zolman, previously told Insider.

It is also not possible to know from one intervention if it is the injection that led to the change in the rate of aging, or whether there could be something else going on, Johnson noted.

Johnson passed his plasma to his father about six months ago, he said on X. On the same day, Johnson himself received plasma from his 17-year-old son, though he later said he personally saw no benefit from the procedure.

Johnson, who considers himself a "professional rejuvenation athlete", has been trying dozens of interventions on himself to see if he can slow aging. These range from a carefully controlled diet and strict exercise regimen to fat injections and laser treatments.

Some clinics in the US are offering injections of plasma from young donors as an antiaging treatment, but there is "there is no compelling clinical evidence on its efficacy," the FDA said in 2019.

In some circumstances like wound healing, it may make sense to use a person's own plasma. That science is quickly evolving, but even then, there's no solid evidence that it could reduce aging, per a post from John Hopkins University.

[quote] Anti-aging guru Bryan Johnson, 46, claims he beat balding and stopped going gray: ‘It’s been a lot of hard work’

He’s trying to make hairstory.

Bryan Johnson, the Los Angeles biohacker famed for his $2 million-a-year mission to reverse the aging process, claims that he has beat both balding and graying in a hair-raising new video posted to YouTube.

“Genetically I should be bald,” the 46-year-old declared at the outset of the clip, which has already garnered over 505,000 views.

The tech guru took viewers through the 3 tactics he uses to keep his locks looking luscious — a routine that forms part of his Project Blueprint initiative to stay forever young.

“The best time to work on your hair is before you start losing it,” Johnson insisted, telling followers in their 20s to start taking precautionary measures before their strands start to thin or shed.

Below, the 3 top tactics for his tresses — plus the two products he uses to stop his hair going gray

The first thing Johnson does every morning to keep a full head of hair is red light therapy.

The tech guru dons a on a battery-powered red light therapy cap for six minutes, saying the device “increases blood flow and also stimulates hair follicle activity.

He said studies on the cap “are pretty good” and while it isn’t the most powerful step in his hair health protocol, when combining it with other treatments it’s helpful.

After using his red light cap, Johnson applies a topical treatment every single morning.

“I apply this topical to my scalp on a daily basis,” he stated. “You’ve probably heard of topicals like Rogaine and Minoxidil 5% – both are effective.”

However, Johnson uses a special concoction made from the following ingredients: Caffeine USP 1%, Finasteride USP 0.25%, Minoxidil USP 5%, Azelaic Acid 1.5%, Diclofenac 0.5%, Tea Tree Oil 5%, Rosemary Oil 0.37%, Ginko Biloba 0.05%, Biotin 0.01%, and Melatonin USP 0.0033%.

He said that people can apply this formula once in the morning and once in the evening for a more aggressive hair growth strategy.

Johnson is also a proponent of microneedling, which he does to “enhance the effects of the topicals.”

During the procedure, a healthcare provider uses a roller with small, fine needles on it, moving over areas of hair loss to create punctures in the skin. It’s believed that the small injuries caused by the needles help provoke hair growth.

Johnson admitted her hasn’t been consistent with microneedling since as he has also been doing a specialized platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and didn’t want to cause too much trauma to his scalp.

However, he told viewers that microneedling is “efficacious.”

Johnson also revealed that he is additionally testing out laser treatment and would keep fans updated on the results.

Meanwhile, Johnson also dished his top tops for fighting graying hair.

The age-defying biohacker began going gray in his 20s, and the first signs of gray appeared right near his temples. He said his lifestyle may have contributed to this.

“It was kind of a crazy time in my life,’ he recalled.

‘I was building Braintree, Venmo, I had three little babies, I was in a challenging relationship, trying to leave my born into religion … a lot going on,” he said. “Also, I was really depressed.”

He said that by his mid-to-late 30s he was “basically all gray.”

Johnson said while he dyed his hair at a salon in the past, he now uses two products to battle grays, but his hair is also coloring itself.

The two products he uses are GR7, an anti-hair loss and anti-gray treatment which he applies three or four times per week, and Mayraki, a colored herbal extract that he applies once a week.

“We biopsied my hair, we looked at under the microscope and we see that the color is being produced beneath the scalp – so it’s actually working,” he explained.

He said those who feel overwhelmed by hair loss treatments and don’t know where to start could begin with using 5% of Romaine or the generic version, Minoxidil.

“You don’t need the longer formulation that I have,” he said.

Fine, R58.

But did you create Venmo?

Yeah, I didn't think so. He's crazy, but I think he looks good.

And you probably never had this level of stress (and heredity), which he points out contributed to early graying and hair loss:

[quote] ‘I was building Braintree, Venmo, I had three little babies, I was in a challenging relationship, trying to leave my born into religion … a lot going on,” he said.

So given all this, he looks damn good.
