"This Property is Condemned" Not Top Tier Tennessee Williams, But Cast Gives Value

Natalie Wood would have been 85 July 20. My look at Nat's second teaming w/ Robert Redford, in Tennessee Williams' "This Property is Condemned." The 1966 film was a critical & commercial flop at the time, but Wood has some wonderful moments as fabulist Williams belle Alva Starr. Sydney Pollack was an excellent actors' director, getting good work from the leads & Mary Badham, Charles Bronson, Robert Blake, & especially Kate Reid as Nat's monstrous mother. My extensive take on this "Property."

I like this movie

Nice photo of two great looking people

Mary Badham is excellent. I think it's one of Nat's best performances and she looks gorgeous. Redford is Redford.

I remember it from years ago - I liked it. Beats the hell out of a Marvel movie.

Here's some stills of a deleted scene between Natalie's Alva Starr and a gentleman she's hustling at the train station, played by then newcomer Dabney Coleman, which I write about in my review...

There was a similarly-named (mid/late?) 70s TV movie featuring Bette Davis, among other oldesters.

Too lazy it IMDB it.

Natalie Wood's showdown scene between Alva and Mama, a recurring theme in Natalie's movies and real life. Hard to believe that Kate Reid (who's great in this) was only 8 years older than Natalie!

Love this film. I know a guy who was an extra in the film. He worked for food and beer, got a little cash, but is always adamant about what a nice lady Natalie Wood was. She would always greet everyone at the beginning of the day, and say goodbye at the end. Class!

Interesting.

Redford in the 50s and 60s - gorgeous.

But, this has always been my favorite.

Astrud Gilberto recorded a version of "Wish Me a Rainbow" from "This Property is Condemned."

Natalie was having an affair with Sydney Pollack and was hoping he would divorce his wife and marry her, but he decided to remain married and ended their affair.

I hate this movie

Mary Badham’s other key role was in what became the final episode of The Twilight Zone—unfortunately, you don’t get to really appreciate her work. The sound recording of the outdoor scenes was badly done, and so they had to record a dub in the studio (June Foray dubbed for Mary?!).

Funny to realize that Mary’s brother John was also in the business…he directed Saturday Night Fever.

I had no idea that Mary Badham was in another movie.

by Anonymousreply 16July 20, 2023 12:27 PM

I never knew that John Badham was Mary's brother...

by Anonymousreply 17July 20, 2023 1:34 PM

Interesting family…not your run of the mill Alabamians.

Mary recently toured in the stage version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

by Anonymousreply 19July 20, 2023 7:40 PM

She played Mrs. DuBois, yes?

by Anonymousreply 20July 20, 2023 9:47 PM

DuBose*

The senior Mr. Badham was an Army General. Mrs. Badham was a wannabe actress from England.

Zero effort was made in this Depression-era-set movie to make the hairstyles, makeup, and clothing look anything but mid-'60's.

[quote]Not Top Tier Tennessee Williams

So very little is.

by Anonymousreply 24July 20, 2023 10:39 PM

Reply #23, When it came to styling the actresses, seldom was there any true authenticity to the period portrayed in 60's movies--Harlow, Hurry Sundown, Reflections in a Golden Eye, Bonnie and Clyde--it would be easier to list the movies that did...

by Anonymousreply 25July 20, 2023 11:33 PM

I remember watching this a while ago, it was good but depressing.
