I know from personal experience being a big ole messy drunk at times in my life, that at some point, drinking loses its capacity to generate feelings of "fun" and it's just a layer of fog between you and the world. And in time just makes you feel chronically exhausted and gross and stupid. He's not "partying" anymore. He's just living in a haze.

R45 Prior to meeting Ms. Heard Depp had reached a come to Jesus moment and had given up the booze. At that time he would have been in his late 40s. If he had stayed sober, he would have been in good shape to reverse much of the cumulative damage and regenerate brain health.

But his sobriety only lasted 18 months. He went back to hardcore abusing himself with booze and drugs again for another decade. Now he's 60. I know the human body is able to heal and regenerate, but one wonders, can a man in his 60s truly bounce back from decrepitude like a guy in his 40s could? I don't know the answer. I don't see him choosing sobriety again in the decisive way he did ten years ago.

This link has a lot of very poignant quotes from Depp during times when he was completely lucid and aware of the destruction his substance abuse was wreaking on his live and his relationships, and how senseless it was. It's sad that he lost his resolve and has seemingly become resigned to his addictions. I'm think that the trauma of his horrible relationship with Heard killed his self esteem and idealism, and broke his spirit. Through in the mid-life loss of confidence that aging causes, and it can be quite a challenge to get your groove back. Way harder than it was when young and supple.

I'm sure he was ready and willing to abandon any previous attempts at sobrity to have fun with his hot young new girl, and deluded himself into thinking he could handle it. I do think Johnny gave up drinking for that year-and-a-half. That's not to say that he ever admitted to himself that he was actually a powerless addict. More that it was a choice that he could pick it up and put it down "anytime I want."

It is depressing to look at him now. He was a very handsome man at one time and he ruined his looks and his health. Johnny, the forever party guy. R75- I honestly don't know but it is very possible. He is a lifelong alcoholic and addict. Most people can't afford to indulge in their addiction to the extent he has because of work, family obligations, money. From what I have witnessed is that when an alcoholic gets to his age and condition health can take a very rapid downturn very quickly.

R77- Meant to say that he will become more and more difficult to care for. He will require a lot of help and not just physically, but his mental status will rapidly decline from alcoholic brain damage. He is lucky to have the financial resources to afford to hire help because he is going to require a lot of it. Needless to say being caretaker to someone like that is not pleasant or easy. They are very difficult to care for, they even frequently are verbally abusive to caretakers. It is a very sad and unpleasant end to what should have been a wonderful life.

I think he'll die within 5 years, but probably not within 1 year. I say "probably" because he's at risk for an OD or GI bleed or a heart attack. Now alcohol-related bleeds are usually survivable if one gets to the hospital in time, but I doubt his private island has a good hospital.

Now as I've said before he doesn't look like he's in end-stage liver failure, although I expect o see the signs soon enough. For the sake of my long-gone crush I hope that something else takes him out before his liver fails completely, liver failure is a slow, horrible, and disgusting death.
