What was so great about them? The skin around them was loose and floppy, even though he was young during his killing spree. Yeah, his cheekbones were high, but his face wasn't a pleasant shape.
Other people with great cheekbones have skin that covers them better, not gaunt and flappy like Richard's cheekbones.

Well developed cheek bones look nice but you need enough subcutaneous facial fat to soften them otherwise they look too severe/skeletal, like in Richard's case.
