[quote] Investigators matched him to the crimes by tracking the phone calls made from burner phones to the victims' cell phones over 10 years ago. The location of the phone calls matched Heuermann's home address and his office address.
The guy kinda missed the point of using a burner.

From the NYTimes:
[quote]The first case to come light began in May 2010, when Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old from Jersey City, N.J., who worked as a prostitute, was reported missing on Long Island.

Won't link to it, but the Daily Mail already has a ton of stuff up; pics of his shithole house, and even his marriage announcement. Can you imagine what the wife is going through right now?

I read the book Lost Girls which was all about this case. It was chilling. After killing one of the escorts, he began calling the escort's younger teenage sister and taunting her with how slowly and painfully he tortured her before murdering her. Nuts.

R11 - I do not know what kind of a sick fuck kills a toddler, but Mr. Massapequa is NOT linked to that case. He's indicted on 3 murders and is the lead suspect for a 4th murder, but not the toddler. At least 10 bodies have been found along that lonely stretch of Ocean Parkway around Gilgo Beach.
Ah, Massapequa NY... the town that keeps on giving! Christina Jorgensen, the band The Stray Cats, Jerry Seinfeld, Joey Buttafucco (remember him? Decades ago he fucked an underage Amy Fisher, who shot his wife), the Baldwins, the Gambino crime family lived there - yes, Carlo. Oh! And Liberty DeVito, who was once Billy Joel's drummer.

I don’t understand his connection to the shannan Gilbert murder. She was called out to a party on oak beach, ran off and was murdered. People said for awhile the suspect had cop connections—hmm
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 15, 2023 2:34 AM |
The police believe that Shannan Gilbert got lost in a patch of high reeds and died of exposure, R52. It's not as crazy as it sounds when you listen to her 911 call. She was in a very bad state, obviously drunk or high on something.

Watching him in the interview posted up thread, I'd never guess he's so evil. Those poor girls, he tortured them, too. He's probably killed other girls, too. Do they know who killed the toddler? The families have suffered all these years. Sick and disturbing. I hope they're watching him so he doesn't kill himself. I want that fat bastard to to answer for this and hear that prison cell door close on him. He was stalking the families, too. Unbelievably evil.

I can't believe it," the neighbor said, before noting that other criminal cases in Massapequa Park were giving the city a poor reputation. "It's giving Massapequa Park people a really bad name. But I got to tell you, this is one of the best communities to live in. I mean, we got a great school system," he told PEOPLE, later adding that it was "very unfair" that crimes like these put a "big schmear" on the community.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | July 15, 2023 9:55 AM |
The 'quiet' or 'loner' description for pretty much any killer they can make it fit for is such a trope. I find it annoying because most of these killers were just normal people with normal social relations - it's demonizing quiet people (yes, I am one myself).
by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 15, 2023 10:08 AM |
(I mean, normal people as in that in a lot of these cases nobody thought it of them, so they were passing as normal people.)

I did not follow this case, but overall this is one lurid, tragic, and disturbing story..

Massapequa Park is right next to Amityville so maybe he can blame the house.
I still don’t understand how he was in Oak Beach. Vacation home? Friend’s house? Architecture job?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 15, 2023 11:39 AM |
r86 it was just a short drive from his house and he probably knew about it because he may have done work there or had known someone there. I grew up 10 minutes away from Massapequa in Levittown and I don't ever remember even hearing the name Gilgo Beach so it must have been pretty private. I only knew about jones Beach.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 15, 2023 11:52 AM |
R87 I live in Long Beach and we usually drive via Ocean Parkway when going to Suffolk county (it is a scenic drive) The Jones Beach communities are basically just a single road with maybe 50 - 100 houses and no normal other things so a random car would stick out and I imagine everyone knows everyone and all of their guests.

by Anonymous | reply 93 | July 15, 2023 1:02 PM |
Woodworking= dismembering corpses and stuffing the remains in burlap sacks?
Shannan's remains was not cut up? Is this why cops know she isn't one of his victims? Did Shannan od out there?
The perp cried to his attorney and said he didn't do it. He is telling the truth, he did not kill Shannan but all them other women? And who knows how many? he did.
The wife's DNA being found on or near the victims is a shocking twist. The wife and kids were out of town when he went on a killing spree. What dna was found and where.

R89- Would someone be kind enough to gift that article? Tia
I remember watching a documentary about this case years ago. It was very creepy and disturbing. I only remember that four of the victims had been discovered at that time, each buried eerily alike right off of the beach ( looked sandy) road. This was still at a time when they didn't know if the victim who called for help and disappeared onevid his victims or not. There were a lot of rumors about a law enforcement officers being involved in these murders.

NYT description of the dumping ground — For a killer looking to hide evidence of his crimes, it was the perfect spot. The straight, quiet stretch of Ocean Parkway would give him plenty of time to listen and watch for coming cars. I’m listening to the LISK podcast now from 2020. It can be a bit of a slog, especially because it paints the girls and their families out to be saints despite the fact that they’re all white trash. (I come from white trash and I know we are far from angels.)
In the episode about Melissa Barthalmey, they cover the calls he made of Melissa’s 15 year old sister using the dead girls cellphone. He would taunt her about Melissa’s death. He also knew things about the 15 year old sister that he learned from the phone. He mocked her as a bastard and a half-breed (bio father black).
It took the police forever to do anything about this. Eventually they were able to trace the cell tower one of the calls was made from — Massapequa.
This girl was 15 and already traumatized by the disappearance of her half-sister.
If this guy is convicted he should be tossed alive into a furnace.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | July 15, 2023 6:16 PM |
Cops did a great job rounding this guy up. They knew early on what town he lived in based on the pings from the cell phone towers and they used the same data to conclude he commuted to work.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | July 15, 2023 6:19 PM |
Does anybody know why it took them so long to figure it out using the cellphone data? Is this newer analysis technology? It does seem the investigation got bogged down in other issues with the local police over the last decade, but I still don’t understand why it took so long to solve this puzzle if they’ve had the cellphone data (and the description of his car) for the last decade.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | July 15, 2023 6:23 PM |
I don't know but I am guessing the investigators took extra precautions to not botch the case.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | July 15, 2023 6:28 PM |
I'm fascinated with the forensics used to catch this guy. I see it in action on the ID murder shows. Phone data, DNA on discarded trash, surveillance cameras, and good old witness observations. It warms my heart that evil deviants get caught this way. And yet so many cold cases are still unsolved. Humans can be so cruel.
There is at least one documentary on this case out there. I saw one about the woman who ran off from a "date" and was banging on doors before disappearing. What a dreadful way to die, and after she messed up her life by going into sex work.

It took me a little while to make the connection but the perp looks very much like a guy I used to know. He was a probation officer who not long into the job was arrested and convicted for coercing female probationers into sex.
Didn't at all see it coming. He seemed serious about his job and from casual contact a nice enough guy despite his unfortunate appearance.

Here’s the thing. This guy is obviously a monster. But what do lawyers call it when they are aggravating circumstances? I don’t know the term, but the fucking phone calls he made to the sister, for me, they take it to an even higher level if that’s even possible. Just like EARSON, who also looooved to torment victims with repeated prank calls “I’m gonna kiiiiiillll you! I’m gonna kiiiiiilll you!” It is a very special level of sadism that I think is uncommon, *even amongst serial killers*. YES, they’re all not human. But to torture the family AFTER horrifically ending a sibling’s life? That is indeed next level.
What does that say? I think it says his heart is as purely filled with hatred, it’s a hatred so deep, so putrid, so twisted and distorted, that not one of us here can truly understand it or comprehend it. We aren’t built to comprehend it. And that is why, while I despise the pigs in most ways, we MUST respect those who deal with this level of violence. Once it enters your psyche, you are not the same person any longer. It marks you. It changes you.
I am the person who volunteers in a jail. I work with violent offenders weekly. But the funny thing is, none of them in five years have ever felt evil at all!!! But the ones who go to classes and seminars actually want to change and grow. I know there are indeed those in the jail who are “monsters” or whatever word you choose, but I don’t interact with them because they don’t choose to attend classes. Only one person scared me because he pursued me romantically, and I set firm boundaries, but he was a genius and a manipulator, and the last time I looked in his eyes — I felt afraid. I don’t want to say who he killed, but it was disturbing enough that I had him removed.
This guy will likely also not engage in any programming in jail and then prison. He will keep to himself. His size will give him enormous protection, though there may be a crazy person who still tests him by trying to fight him. I sure as fuck wouldn’t want to share a cell with this creature.
I just hope the families can start healing. I don’t like calling people white trash — these are the poor, it’s that simple. And they belong to us, we need to own that we built this society. These poor girls did not deserve to die, and they DO deserve justice, just like any other victim.

R152- Brilliant. Great insight. And yes, the taunting messages are the key indicator to me that this guy is next level.
The only serial killer (or any killer) I have ever heard of taunting victims/families was EARONS (and possibly the Zodiak Killer?)
by Anonymous | reply 155 | July 15, 2023 11:02 PM |
There are others too, they just aren’t as famous. Years ago I read Mindhunter, there was a case where a girl was kidnapped (and murdered) and the family thought she was still alive and I think he even had the girl write her family a long letter prior to him murdering her. So other cases do exist, but yes, Zodiac and EARSON are the big one that I can think of.
I would imagine many of them *want* to contact the family, but they know it increases the odds of being caught.

To the person who asked about the beaches, please read the geography section in the link below. The Western end of the Island with Jones Beach State Park and the theater is very busy over the summer, but has no housing. The central and Eastern portions have small single street “communities” running parallel to the parkway on the north side, some with marinas and beaches to the south of the Parkway. The beaches in these areas are all restricted to some extent; either to the homeowners on the North side of the Parkway or to town of Babylon residents.

Also Long Island is weird because lots of towns make up a “Town.” Babylon is in Babylon, but so is Lindenhurst and Deer Park and Amityville and and and.
When it isn’t beach season there isn’t much traffic on Ocean Parkway except for people coming to or from Long Beach Island from the East. Even in a place like Merrick the Southern State Parkway or Sunrise Highway are faster.

If it's such a small community where everyone knows one another and their visitors and who owns what car I am interested in knowing how one resident was able to order "dates' and neighbors not know what was up.
Shannan Gilbert was on a date, started flipping out and the date was canceled. The John tried to get her out of his home and she would not leave. She called the cops and told them " they are after me". She didn't know where she was and to the cops credit, they kept their patience to try to get a coherent answer from her. Her driver forcibly removed Shannan from the Johns home and she started screaming and ran out in the street.

^ Shannon’s story is the most curious part of this saga. Did this guy in fact kill her — or no? Did someone post that he told his lawyer he did not kill her (alluding that the others were his)? At first I thought that she had a psychotic breakdown AND that he killed her. Now I think that she had a psychotic break and that it is very possible someone else actually killed her! Which is insane. They had the record of the house she was at, they know who that John was, and there was that creepy dude who inserted himself in her case. Could it be that he is her killer (other creepy dude) but not this giant troll?

If it refers to Shannan Gilberts death, he told the truth.
He is being charged with the murder of four victims not including Shannan Gilbert's.
Investigators found the remains of 11 people including an Asian male and a toddler.

So what was this beach, just a convenient place for anyone with a dead body to drop it off? Are the charges for four murders because those are all they have evidence for implicating him? Because there’re still seven more dead people. Four is creepy enough. Creepier to think if there’s more than one serial killer.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | July 16, 2023 1:00 AM |
I don't know the cause of Shannan Gilberts death. The only connection between her death and this serial killer is that her death revealed the remains of many others. This guy used dismemberment of the remains wrapped in burlap to get rid of his victims. I don't know if the other victims were found in this condition.
Investigators kept things quiet and deserve credit for the dedication and discretion. It's one thing to know a guy did it and another thing to prove he did.

Shannan was a sex worker who had a slight build, she had this in common with the victims. One neighbor who opened the door to her called the cops and described Shannan as a 14 year old kid.
Shannan advertised on Craigslist to find clients, this is also a shared set of circumstances with his victims.

R178, I have long hair and went to lunch yesterday in a friend's car. Return trip, I noticed one of my long hairs on the dashboard. I don't know why but long hair will get everywhere --- maybe each hair is weightier, or it's more noticeable.
Happens even when brushed thoroughly, so I usually wear it up, and always when cooking or serving guests.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | July 16, 2023 1:35 AM |
R184- Very good example ,I remember leaving strands of my hair when it was long as well. Animal hair is another example. by Anonymous | reply 185 | July 16, 2023 1:44 AM |
Shannon Gilbert was bipolar and stopped taking her meds according to her parents. She went off with one of the guys to score drugs. She went to peoples houses for help. They let her in and she ran off again. Those people called the police, including a woman. Shannon either had a psychotic break or was on something. The 911 tapes make this clear. Even the guys are heard on the phone asking her to leave. That she’s scaring them. Her responses don’t even make sense.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | July 16, 2023 1:54 AM |
If this perp did not do "it", how did his wife's hair (or DNA) end up on or near the remains of three victims?
The investigation revealed that wife was out of town when the victims were killed.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | July 16, 2023 2:19 AM |
He is being charged with four murders. All of them were found by him through the adult service advertising in Craigslist.
The investigation revealed that he was communicating with these victims up to the point of their murders.
And in one instance even after killing he contacted a victims family and used precise language only the killer would know about the victim.
So that leaves all those other bodies found including the unidentified Asian male and a toddler.
It's already been said many times that it's unlikely that multiple serial killers are using the same dumping ground.
Mafia dumping ground?
by Anonymous | reply 188 | July 16, 2023 2:30 AM |

Shannan did not escape from a home. She got way high, was canceled by her date but wouldn't leave his house until her driver attempted to forcibly remove her from the date's house. Then she ran out of the house and banged on the door of at least two other homes.
I only know this from listening to her 911 call and the 911 calls of neighbors who tried to help her.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | July 16, 2023 2:44 AM |
This is just odd. Two serial killers using the same dumping ground? If they both kill a victim the same night do they flip a coin to see how gets the burial site first? Serial killer ethics? "When Amanda answered the phone, you know, she was so excited," Barthelemy said. "'Oh my God, Melissa's finally calling me.' And then, there's a guy on the other end."
"And this voice is saying, 'Oh, this isn't Melissa,'" Cohen explained.
"...he was soft-spoken and had -- a very controlled and comfortable manner of speech, which made his horrific messages all the more devastating ... he began to toy with her ... And for the very first time, she heard the voice of the killer."
Suffolk County police told "48 Hours" that they believe the caller was, in fact, Melissa's killer.
"I was just hysterical, totally hysterical," said Barthelemy.
The calls didn't stop coming. There were eight in total, including one in which the likely killer spoke to Lynn. He claimed he was with the NYPD and wanted to know if she had filed a missing persons report. But mainly he focused on Melissa's little sister and called to terrify her.
"And the killer said some pretty horrible things to Amanda," Cohen told Moriarty. "Sexually explicit things as to what he had done to Melissa, sexually explicit things as to what he was going to do to Amanda."
After the third call, police asked Verizon to tap Amanda's phone.
Authorities were able to trace some of the calls to a handful of busy locations in midtown Manhattan: near the Port Authority, the Empire State Building and Times Square. The caller always hung up before he could be identified. But the police were learning a lot about him based on his voice.
"I believe that he is between -- his late 20s and his late 30s," Cohen said. "I've been led to believe by Amanda and by the data that I have that he is a white male."
Much has been made about the caller's familiarity with police investigative techniques. He knew what locations would be difficult to trace and how long he could stay on the phone. That sense of confidence may have driven the caller to reach out to Amanda one last time on Aug. 26, 2009, with a chilling message.
"And he said, 'Do you know what I did to your sister?' And she said, 'No.' He said, 'Well, I killed Melissa,'" Cohen said. "And he also left one of the conversations with the threat that he knows where Amanda lives and might come after her."
by Anonymous | reply 210 | July 16, 2023 5:31 AM |

The police are going to have a hell of a time verifying when his first kill really happened, we may never know. This man was very very cunning. It is possible that in his youth, his hunting ground was Manhattan. Then as he got older, he got slightly lazier and honed his craft, and opted to do it from his home turf. If he was killing sex workers in Manhattan, I seriously doubt that they will ever be able to prove it, UNLESS they reopen old cases and test for DNA. Needle in a haystack.

by Anonymous | reply 223 | July 16, 2023 8:12 PM |
It obvious he was hired muscle for the mob to get rid of these young pros who had witnessed things they should not have. Simultaneously he was also a psychopath who got off on killing prostitutes. His participation in an underground sex ring which involved the most prominent members of high society including the NYC mayor, was his hunting ground. Meanwhile a prominent doctor used the slaying to cover up the murder of his wife. The wife had started an affair with the chief of police and the chief was framed for her slaying. Simultaneously an anti vaccine group begins protests around the city arguing that vaccines cause autism. And the serial killer’s wife shoots the murderous doctor in open court ending in a cliff hanger that will be resolved on our sister show Law & Order: Organized Crime.

I recently met a social worker who worked with serial killers in the prison system. She said each one was a pathological narcissist and they get caught because they have grandiose fantasies that they are smarter than everyone else. So they get sloppy and leave evidence because they assume they won’t be captured.
This sick fuck—call the girls’ families from their phones and taunting them. The death penalty is too good for him I hope he’s brutally tortured in prison every day of his miserable life.

R226 It wasn’t Rex who called Shannen’s family. That’s the only victim with known calls to the family but she was killed by someone else or an accident. Her actual cause of death is ruled accidental.

R231 It is very true which is why I made a thread about it. The former Suffolk County police chief went to prison for corruption and was adamant the FBI not be involved.

R232, if you have a link I would love to read your thread — I do recall that part of the story too. When that happened, I really did think we had a cop who was the killer. It made my spidey senses go off witnessing what the police did, but corruption is caused by many factors so it’s possible that their corruption had zero to do with why this case stalled, or the stall was a red herring and had no basis in the case itself.

R240- I'm not buying it or the that two SK's picked the same dump site , and until I read the cause / manner of death for Shannon I am not believing she wasn't murdered by him either. I have no idea wth is going on , but this is actually insulting, imo. They could have at the very least come up with a credible lie.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | July 17, 2023 2:19 AM |
R244, I honestly don’t know enough to have an informed opinion, but I will say this — the police have not stated that they don’t believe he committed ALL of the killings. We have assume that they don’t yet have enough evidence to win those other cases in a prosecution. That also don’t need mean that there won’t be additional charges coming. For all we know, he could even make a full confession a la BTK style in open court. Time will tell, it’s always best in these types of cases to reserve judgment until more information is made public.

They needed to get this guy in custody as soon as possible to prevent him from killing again. What don't you get about that?
by Anonymous | reply 247 | July 17, 2023 2:28 AM |
R245- Thank you for the clarification and my apologies for not understanding what was being said. I thought the police were claiming two different SK used the same dump site. But if iirc, there were rumors of the possibility of two different killers , at least the first 2 or 3 years into the investigation. One suspect was a doctor, I believe. Also there has been quite a lot talk of police officers being involved in as well.
by Anonymous | reply 248 | July 17, 2023 2:30 AM |
r246 Hurricane Sandy decimated that beach so a lot of stuff was lost and maybe more bodies. I doubt very much that anyone is currently using it as a dumping ground because it is being watched so closely.
The police said they are now looking into whether they can connect this guy to any of the other murders. I think they wanted to get him on the ones they were sure about.

My goodness r248, you are so welcome! I remember that rumor too. I’m not sure what to think about one versus two killers because I still can’t understand what happened to poor Shannon. If the cops knew her John was not him, then what are the odds that he heard her racket that night and took her out? Does anyone here know how close Shannon was to this demon’s house that night?
Also, I love Elderlez. She’s a smart cookie, do not fuck with her or I will cut you.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | July 17, 2023 2:38 AM |
No. You are wrong again. He is charged with the four murders because cops know he communicated with these 4 victims right up to their disappearance. With a burner phone. He found his victims on Craigslist Adult services. And he disposed of his victims in a similar fashion. Three victims had his wife's DNA on or around their remains. He did not kill Shannan Gilbert. What do you not understand about this? He is not responsible for all of the rest of these bodies including the Asian male and the toddler.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | July 17, 2023 2:40 AM |
R252- I have no problem understanding what they are saying, my problem is believing them. What can't you understand about that? They make these claims but will not say why not give any information on why her death wasn't considered a murder. If it was accidental what happened? What kind of accident? She was very close to his home, confused, terrified and her body found at his kill site?
by Anonymous | reply 253 | July 17, 2023 2:49 AM |
r253 the reason they didn't believe she was murdered was because she kept going from house to house for help and when they would try to help her she would run off and go to the next house. She acted like a looney tune.

I looked up the cause of death for Shannan Gilbert last night on Google and it was declared undetermined.
That girl was higher than a kite. She may have overdosed but the medical examiner does not know what caused her death.

by Anonymous | reply 257 | July 17, 2023 3:05 AM |
Hold the phone. Wasn’t Shannon’s body found with her pants down??? I remember that quite clearly. Yes, Shannon had a complete break with reality. But that doesn’t explain her pants. It is an incredible coincidence that she ended up in that particular location. Wouldn’t a human have survived the night? Sure, you could get terribly lost in the brambles, but you would also hear the ocean and when the sun rose, she would have been able by sound to gradually find her way to the beach or the road. I believe it was around 2:30am when she called 911, so dawn would have begun in just a few hours from when she got “lost” in the dumping grounds of a serial killer.
Oh! And she also just happened to be a prostitute too. Come on, it’s just soooo many coincidences, though I do understand that they can happen, they just seem to be too big to me.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | July 17, 2023 3:07 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 259 | July 17, 2023 3:09 AM |
R255, whether she OD’ed or was drugged, wouldn’t the autopsy require a toxicology report? I do think it’s possible she was drugged (and mentally ill) at the same time. How does a prostitute end up in a killing field with other dead prostitutes, but it just coincidence? I just can’t buy that.
Undetermined does not eliminate murder. It only means they just don’t know, so we cannot rule out her murder, sorry kids. Doesn’t matter what the coppers say, “undetermined” means exactly that. We just do not know. I want to know if they did a toxicology screening on her.

@r172 as baffling as it is, it’s hard to tie RH to Shannan Gilbert. He would’ve had to have been at the party or around, it seems he worked alone. So strange that she died 6 miles away from where another SK was killing SWs.

Point taken r269, I guess I hadn’t considered that perspective. But no, I never imagined RH was hanging out in beach brambles. I guess what I envisioned is that she was captured and killed, THEN disposed of in those brambles after her death. Also the fact that Shannon kept using the word “they” made me wonder if there was more than one John. Could RH have known this John/doctor or whoever he was? Idk. Everything in me believes she was murdered, but I also own that I may be completely wrong lol.

How long after the party was Shannon's body discovered? I'm confused why the coroner couldn't find a COD. The police were called immediately during her freak out, so it had to have been rather quickly, right? Or did it take a while and she was in such a state of decomposition that a COD couldn't be determined.
She was removed from the party by her driver. Did she break free from him and he lost her? Was he an the party guests questioned? And who were the guests, VIPs?

I find it strange that Rex Heuermann lived in Massapequa Park and had no residence on Oak beach but yet evidently chose that as his dumping ground. Remains of 3 girls he's linked to (I'm assuming they will find all 4 are linked to him) all craigs list sex workers with 4 more remains only a few miles apart. One, an Asian male is also thought to be connected to the sex trade, the other remains belong to a toddler. This beach though not far from Heuermann's house in Massapequa Park is a big coincidence the remains all there in this more or less desolate strip of land and all have connections to the sex trade. Was it a ring? Same guy? They think Shannon Gilbert is not connected but she also has a lot of similarities to the others. Craig's list prostitute, tiny female, found on same island not far away.

[quote] Prior to the bombshell arrest on Thursday of Rex Heuermann over several of the Gilgo Beach murders, the case had been hampered by a series of scandals inside the police department leading the investigation. The disgraced former chief of Suffolk County Police Department, James Burke, was at the center of the storm, which culminated in his imprisonment in 2016 for 46 months for battering a thief who stole a bag from his police car which contained porn and sex toys. Shocking details emerged about Burke's alleged fondness for drugs and prostitutes. Burke is also accused of stymying the Gilgo Beach case in its early stages by blocking the FBI's role in the investigation.

During his tenure as the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the Suffolk County Police Department, James Burke considered himself untouchable,” United States Attorney Robert Capers said in a statement. “He abused his authority by brazenly assaulting a handcuffed prisoner, he pressured subordinates to lie to cover up his criminal acts, and he attempted to thwart the civil rights investigation into his conduct.
“With today’s sentence, Burke learned that no one is above the law and that the consequences for such egregious behavior are severe.”

Hearing that Heuermann's family was using food stamps brings Joshua Powell to mind. Powell would give his wife Susan only $10 a week to feed their sons and herself; meanwhile he would get himself pizza (if I remember correctly) and spend thousands on computer equipment. I wonder if Heuermann let his family live in a near-impoverished state while he indulged in his vices.

Amber Costello met with him and ran a scam on him, having an appointment for sex interrupted and she kept the money. Since he got no sex and asked for credit, met with her the next day. The day she disappeared. Since she scammed him I'm thinking it angered him and he probably tortured her before killing.
"Amber Lynn Costello, who was the last of the four Gilgo Beach victims to be killed, invited him into her West Babylon home — and scared him off with a ruse in which her friend pretended to be her irate boyfriend. She then pocketed the money Heuermann left behind before she ever had a chance to perform any sex acts on him. The witnesses with her described him as a large ogre-esque man and identified his first-generation Chevrolet Avalanche to police.
“That was not nice so do i [sic] credit for next time,” Heuermann later texted Costello from Massapequa Park, according to court documents. The records show the witness told investigators, “Amber told us that he wanted to see her again, but he didn’t want to come back to the house because of her boyfriend.”
She was last seen alive the following day after leaving in a vehicle matching the description of Heuermann’s pickup".

Oh good, websleuths fraus have entered the chat at r358 and r359.
You didn’t like the fact that I pointed out that the wife may have known and done nothing about it, but you couldn’t really argue with that point, so instead you chose to pretend that I said something else. That I was claiming she’s the real killer. That’s sad because it’s so foolish. Try harder.
If you think someone who’s only five feet tall can’t scratch of punch while the life is being strangled out of them, I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn that’s a steal. I don’t care if he’s 100 feet tall. A person being murdered by strangulation struggles — HARD — as long as they’re not tied up.
Whether she was away when he committed the crimes or not, there’s no way he killed all these women by strangulation and got away bruise and cut free every single time, and as I mentioned it’s almost guaranteed he murdered more of the Gilgo Beach dead than the ones he’s being charged with.
If she knew he was hurting people while she was away and did nothing, she contributed to the deaths that followed. It’s as plain as the mooncup in front of you.

^ correct r368. We know so much less than the little tiny pile of answers we have at this moment.
More will come out, you can bank on it. That’s part of their fantasy world, and they most certainly don’t want to risk the wife interfering with their fantasies. It is possible that she knew, but I would say not only unlikely, maybe even improbable, based upon all other known American serial killers married to women.

Isn’t it possible that it was “all of the above”? A former bomb shelter (though with him being in the construction/renovation industry, he likely has oodles of contractors in his network who could have done the framing/drywall/electrical for him, then he would do the soundproofing himself (and/or had them install that specialized sound reduction drywall too).
He used the space both for sex play/torture, AND as a butchery. Horrific for sure.
Part of me wants to believe he couldn’t come close to Gacy in numbers because of modern surveillance, but the flip side is that he is clearly extremely intelligent (I would say smarter than Gacy actually), combined with his age, location, MO, cunning, and audacity (calling the sister on a victim’s phone more than once) and it sounds like at a minimum we have another Israel Keyes. I will not be shocked if his numbers go into the 20’s, though it’s still ridiculous speculation and way too early to say. I would imagine the cops might have more evidence that’s giving them a better sense of total victims, though who can say how much material they are processing?
It’s all conjecture right now.

The case was closed until the new commissioner took the job. And the lead that helped nab him wasn't followed up for 12 years? Jesus, how could this be?
[QUOTE]The commissioner reopened the case last year, creating the joint Gilgo Beach Task Force, which he said he planned to keep in service and continue the investigation into all of the bodies found along the South Shore.
[QUOTE]Harrison formed the unit after taking office, with the squad identifying Heuermann as a suspect by March 2022 — in part by following up on a 2010 tip from a witness whose dormant lead eventually helped put Heuermann in handcuffs.

What compelled him to own an arsenal? And it's not a mini arsenal. Are he and his brother some kind of nutters waiting for the apocalypse or a race war?

The clown story on that AHS season could have been way more creatively done. As I recall he ended up just being retarded or something and not a maniacal killer at all. I found this interview interesting.
Former escort Nikkie Brass said Heuermann talked about the Gilgo killings during their meeting at a Port Jefferson restaurant in 2015. "It didn't seem like a true crime fan who just knows information they've seen on TV and read it – seemed like somebody who was reliving it," says Brass.
Brass went on to say that Heuerman then talked about how a killer could potentially get rid of the bodies by carrying burlap sacks through the marsh.

R470, Back atcha, DEAR.
"IS" is a verb of BEING, not ACTION. In mathematical terms, A = B, so the pronoun after the verb is in the same form as preceding, aka the Nominative, not the Subjective.

R489 Ann Rule was great. I honestly felt sorry for her, believing so strongly in Bundy and finding out at last how wrong she was. He got to her with his charms. Some say she was in love with him. He must've also liked her promising her (strangely enough) no harm would ever come to her young daughter and it never did.
I haven't been able to find it again but long ago I read during his trial in Florida at which she was present sure of his innocence, he as his own lawyer put up that huge photo of his teeth to prove it and she finally saw through him. She got up and ran down the hall to the bathroom and threw up.

“I had long since managed a degree of detachment when dealing with photographs from homicide cases. They no longer upset me as they once did, although I make it a point not to dwell on them. By the time I stood in Shirley Lewis’s office, I had seen thousands of body pictures. I had seen pictures of Kathy Devine and Brenda Baker in Thurston County, but that was months before it was known there was a “Ted.” Of course, there were no bodies to photograph in the other Washington cases, and I had had no access to Colorado or Utah pictures. Now, I was staring down at huge color photographs of the damage done to girls young enough to be my daughters—at pictures of damage alleged to be the handiwork of a man I thought I knew. That man who only minutes before had smiled the same old grin at me, and shrugged as if to say, “I have no part of this.” It hit me with a terrible sickening wave. I ran to the ladies’ room and threw up.” ― Ann Rule, The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy: The Shocking Inside Story

That is why I put up the article. I thought it gave some reasonable explanations for this and I thought it a well thought out article.I don’t have a clue about anyone else having this phenomenon. No time to search. Maybe you could.

I wish they knew what happened to Shannon Gilbert. I get they don't think that she's related to this guy. I wonder if they are checking just the same but what I read was Gilbert was not found in burlap, was on a different side of the road then the Gilgo 4 but gee a killer can change sides of the road can't he? However, I understand, yes, they probably have information I don't. But Gilbert's last phone call is so poignant. I think of her voice on that call from time to time feel so bad for her and wonder what did happen there. The second autopsy paid by the mother and done by a private investigator said her hyoid bone was broken and that indicates strangulation. Originally they said she ran out into the weeds and died of exposure, then I read the weeds are like 12 foot tall, full of stickers and at that time of the year there is 2 to 3 foot of water out there and that she had no shoes and no pants on. Those were found quite a ways from her on the other side of the weeds. With weeds that high I can't see them floating through. She screams on her 911 phone call after saying they're after me, they're going to kill me. They believed she was on drugs and she ended up dead on that lonely stretch of highway in a line a few miles apart or so of other bodies. What the heck, can there really be several killers out there picking this one spot to dump bodies and they are all unconnected?

Funny. "In 2022, the Suffolk County Police Department in collaboration with the FBI teamed with Othram to determine if advanced DNA testing could help to identify Fire Island Jane Doe. Forensic evidence was sent to Othram’s laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. Othram scientists developed a suitable DNA extract from the forensic evidence and then used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive genealogical profile. After successfully completing the process, the DNA profile was delivered to the FBI's forensic genetic genealogy team and the FBI team performed the necessary work to generate investigative leads".
And yesterday they wanted a DNA swab from Rex Heuermann.
"In April 1996, the legs of an unidentified woman were recovered inside of a black garbage bag at Blue Point Beach in Suffolk County, New York. Later, in April 2011, the woman’s skull was recovered near Ocean Parkway west of Tobay Beach in Nassau County, New York".
Tobay Beach is just down the line moving in a sw direction from Gilgo Beach. Blue Point Beach is actually ON Long Island, on the Great South Shore Bay side, across from Fire Island and about 27 miles up the road from Massapequa Park. Rex Heuermann lived there all his life and so I'm guessing he was there then, he would've been about 32 years old.
I wonder, like everyone else does at this point if

Sorry, not trying to derail the thread but since Bundy's been mentioned...
The account of the Chi Omega sorority house murders in Ann Rule's book reminded me of what we know of the U. of Idaho killings - probable stalking, frenzied attacks, occupant/s sensing "unreasoning terror" and locking themselves in their room. Maybe Kohberger's a Bundy fan?

The remains may have washed onto the shore from somewhere else. Still if RH had a boat there he could have dumped his victims into the great south bay or left the corpses on the little marsh islands that dot Jones Inlet and Reynolds Channel.

Wow. "Former state Sen. Phil Boyle has long been critical of Burke’s handling of the Gilgo Beach killings — even going so far as to ask the state to look into the former top cop’s actions.
On Tuesday, Boyle reiterated that he believes Burke hampered efforts to solve the case for years".
Wonder what's up with that.

Police chief who bungled ( or hampered ) case is gay.
A disgraced former top cop on Long Island was arrested in a prostitution sting after allegedly exposing himself and trying to solicit a sex worker at a park, officials announced.
Former Suffolk Police Chief James Burke was arrested around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Suffolk County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Selden, the county executive's office said. A law enforcement source told NBC New York that the county park rangers set up a sting operation at the spot in the middle of County Road 83.
Burke, 58, was accused of soliciting a male prostitute and exposing himself. He was charged with public lewdness, indecent exposure, criminal solicitation and offering a sex act, according to the county executive's office.
An attorney for Burke could not be reached. The Suffolk County District Attorney did not respond to a request for comment.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said county park rangers made the arrest at the start of an undercover operation, responding to complaints about sexual solicitation at the park. The rangers apparently had not realized, at first, they had arrested the disgraced former chief of the department.
At the time of his arrest, the commissioner said Burke tried to use his name to avoid arrest.
"He was expressing to us how this would be a public humiliation for him," Sgt. Brian Quattrini, with the park rangers, said.

"According to court documents, Burke beat up Loeb in 2012 after Loeb stole a bag full of sex toys and a porn DVD showing women being tortured from Burke's patrol car".

Don't forget, the former District Attorney is in jail. For being involved in the Burke drama.
I'm not defending any murderers, but my boss was murdered in that county and they (the police & D.A) did a LOT of fucked up things to the people related to and friends with the person/people they thought commited the murder. It was my boss's wife that murdered him. I'm pretty sure her boyfriend helped, maybe not the murder but at least with the clean up. They wanted to arrest him, but they didn't have any evidence, so the D.A (tommy spota) had the police pickup 4 of the boyfriend's friends and family members as they were driving to work and brought each of them to different police stations all around Suffolk County. Nobody knew where they were and the police wouldn't release them , wouldn't let them call anyone and were questioning them, even though they all asked for attorneys. And they threatened them with all kinds of things they could arrest them for (which was all bullshit) and that they would take their kids away and put them in foster care. They even hit them. They hit the wife in the head. They eventually released them, and the people sued the county and it was eventually settled out of court many years later. But they picked up the guy's wife (who he was getting a divorce from because he was cheating with my boss's wife). She didn't know anything. She was being cheated on. She was a social worker and they scared her so much about taking her kids away she peed her pants and had a nervous breakdown and had to go to a mental hospital to recuperate. And has PTSD from that experience. That's the kind of shit this county pulled on people when Spota and Burke were in charge. They basically kidnapped people and threatened them. That's standard operating procedure in Suffolk County, NY. That's why the guy with the bag of videos and sex toys was terrified. They did the same thing to him as did with the family of the guy who was involved in my boss's death. The police kidnap people, threaten them, assault them.
My boss's murder trial was really fucked up too. The assistant district attorney who prosecuting the case (and eventually became D.A) sent in an informant to suggest beating her and children up. The boyfriend didn't come up with this. It was the informant. And the boyfriend said something like, "how funny would that be if she and her kids disappeared before trial"?. And the assistant district attorney didn't say anything for a long time. She waited until the opening of the murder trial and said, "the defendant wants to kill me & kidnap my children. She didn't have a case. She didn't have DNA. She didn't have video. She didn't have anything. This is the kind of shit that she had to pull to win the case. Of course she wasn't allowed to use at trial, because it was pure entrapment, but the jury was there and heard say all of that. And when the jurors were questioned after the trial, they mentioned it. Despite the judge saying to ignore it, that actually factored into the boyfriend being found guilty. An one of the jurors even said something, "the boyfriend wasn't there (when the murder occurred), but he's still a bad and deserved to go to jail so I voted to convict him of this murder".
That wasn't the jury instructions. They were only supposed to find him guilty if they thought he did it. If they thought he was there and committed the murder with his own hands. And the jurors said, "he wasn't there, but he was probably involved".
That's not right. You're not supposed to convict someone because you think they might have been involved, even though they weren't there. There's supposed to be evidence.

And the female ADA took over for Spota & knew all about the police kidnapping those 4 people and holding them hostage in police station for almost a day. She was just as bad as Spota was. This is a really, really corrupt county. I would not be surprised if the police and/or the former D.A spota knew about these women's murders, or might have even been involved in this or at least suspected Heurrman did this and just looked the other way. Half or more of the police department are crooked as can be. I wouldn't doubt it if evidence "accidentally gets contaminated" or lost. Or only half of it was collected. They're a very crooked county. And a lot of police and prosecutors have a lot to hide. Thank goodness that female district attorney (janet albertson) has since retired, but that bitch knows everything that went on in that county for the past 30 years. She literally and figuratively knows where all the bodies are buried
