That's an obese 31.5 BMI. There's no excuse for overeating that much. To get to the midpoint of the normal BMI range, you would need to get down to 160 pounds. That means you are 72 pounds overweight.
To get just below the line for the normal BMI, you would need to at least get down to 183 pounds, so at a minimum you need to lose 50 pounds, not 12. It can be challenging, but if you have the will power, you can do it.

Oh please R31. BMI is often a joke.
I'm 6'2". IIRC, BMI has my healthy weight at around 175. I would look like a heroin addict if I was that thin. I have a linebacker's build, with broad shoulders and legs like small states. And that's with not working out. It's just how I'm built. I should never be below 195.
Of course height plays an important role in what your weight should be. But so do other factors. Natural muscle mass for one. It's utterly ridiculous to assume everyone who's 6' tall should all way around 160.
R28, don't listen to that priss pot. Lose the 12 lbs for your health. But I bet you look great.

I'm just over 6'2", 186 lbs, 33 years old. I was skinny as a kid but got really fat for a time as an adolescent, and remained a chubby teenager. I eventually thinned out after high school, but at 21 was diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer which fucked me up bad. I had to have major surgery to remove my thyroid and hundreds of lymph nodes in my neck and chest. After the surgery, I had to avoid taking thyroid replacement hormones so that I could undergo radioactive iodine therapy. This process took about 6 months from start to finish, and I gained around 40 pounds—no energy, a hardly-functioning metabolism, my hair fell out—a total nightmare. I had never felt worse about myself. I did lose the weight over the next couple of years, but it was an up-and-down process. My brother is 6'5" and I sometimes wonder if I might have been a bit taller had I not gone through the whole thyroid debacle.
At my current weight, I think I look pretty good. If I lost 10-15 pounds, I honestly think I'd look too skinny. Like R35, I have a pretty big frame (wide shoulders, long legs). I'm comfortable at my current weight.

5'8, 162-165 lb, 60. Probably more muscle than average as I do a couple of hours exercise most days, but still wouldnt mind losing 5 lb

by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 14, 2023 8:19 AM |
6'0 179 65. I'm 10 pounds over the weight I should be. for my frame, which is small (narrow hips. narrow shoulders, small wrists and ankles). Almost all of my excess weight is carried in a little bowling ball in my front. (No love handles, no big flabby ass). I'm trying, but it's not so easy to lose weight. I love good food too much. I eat a very healthy diet (lots of vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and fish, etc) but I also snack, especially at night, and my portions are too big for my level of activity now. I look good in clothes, but I'm honest with myself and I know I should weigh less. I'd be ashamed to ask my doc to prescribe Ozembic, but I think about it!

I've always had what was called a "swimmer's build." I could lift weights all day, every day for months and I wouldn't be able to put on any of the muscle definition that I wish I could. I'm not emaciated-looking, but nothing to write home about.

Who is the BMI police woman who’s telling everyone that men should be sickly thin even if over six feet? Every body is different.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 14, 2023 6:49 PM |
Being in the healthy range on the BMI doesn't look sickly thin, at all, especially on the upper end of it. In fact you can look kind of doughy and still be in the healthy BMI category if you don't workout and have little muscle tissue.
A lot of guys think they're just built big and are muscular with a little extra they could lose if they tried. In reality underneath is a skinny person with a thick layer of fat on top that may be deposited evenly enough to give the illusion of a muscular frame.
I don't say that to disparage people who are overweight, I'm attracted to chubby guys. I just know that a lot of guys who have never really gotten lean are mistaken as to what they would look look like at 8-15% body fat.
