Matt Damon Fell Into ‘Depression’ While Filming A Movie That Turned Out To Be Shit

Matt Damon is opening up about having to power through productions knowing a film isn’t good.

The “Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Oppenheimer” actor revealed during an episode of YouTube series “Jake’s Takes” that he fell into a “depression” while filming a movie he saw heading for disaster.

“Without naming any particular movies…sometimes you find yourself in a movie that you know, perhaps, might not be what you had hoped it would be, and you’re still making it,” Damon said. “And I remember halfway through production and you’ve still got months to go and you’ve taken your family somewhere, you know, and you’ve inconvenienced them, and I remember my wife [Luciana Barroso] pulling me up because I fell into a depression about like, what have I done?”

Damon continued, “She just said, ‘We’re here now.’ You know, and it was like…I do pride myself, in a large part because of her, at being a professional actor and what being a professional actor means is you go and you do the 15-hour day and give it absolutely everything, even in what you know is going to be a losing effort. And if you can do that with the best possible attitude, then you’re a pro, and she really helped me with that.”

Perhaps that’s why Damon is trying to take projects back into his own hands. Last year, Damon founded the Artists Equity production company with longtime collaborator and fellow Oscar winner Ben Affleck. The duo’s film “Air,” which Affleck directed and Damon starred in, debuted earlier this year. Damon is also appearing in Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls” with Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, and Pedro Pascal.

Damon’s “Oppenheimer” co-star Robert Downey Jr. similarly reflected on his past flops, calling critically panned “Dolittle” a turning point in his career post-MCU during a New York Times Magazine interview.

“I finished the Marvel contract and then hastily went into what had all the promise of being another big, fun, well-executed potential franchise in ‘Dolittle,’” Downey said. “I had some reservations. Me and my team seemed a little too excited about the deal and not quite excited enough about the merits of the execution. But at that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies.”

He continued, “The stress it put on my missus [producer Susan Downey] as she rolled her sleeves up to her armpits to make it even serviceable enough to bring to market was shocking. After that point — what’s that phrase? Never let a good crisis go to waste? — we had this reset of priorities and made some changes in who our closest business advisers were.”

by Anonymousreply 1July 14, 2023 1:50 AM

Such a tragic story.

I feel for you, Matt Damon.

by Anonymousreply 2July 14, 2023 1:58 AM

Matt, stop being such a F**!

by Anonymousreply 3July 14, 2023 1:59 AM

The Good Shepherd?

by Anonymousreply 4July 14, 2023 2:02 AM

That fracking movie? I live in fracking country and didn't even want to see it. Fracking is depressing but some of the frackers are hot.

by Anonymousreply 5July 14, 2023 2:10 AM

I’m sure the enormous paycheck must be soothing.

And yet he keeps crying and whining about it.

by Anonymousreply 7July 14, 2023 2:23 AM

This is absolutely his US/China flop “The Great Wall”

Shot in China and New Zealand

by Anonymousreply 8July 14, 2023 2:24 AM

R7 Because he’s a fag and won’t admit it.

by Anonymousreply 9July 14, 2023 2:25 AM

Matt is not a fag and I'm the dame who can prove it!

by Anonymousreply 10July 14, 2023 2:31 AM

We were fags together!

by Anonymousreply 11July 14, 2023 2:42 AM

He's been on trips around the world with his family, AND he's worth millions. Hard to feel sorry for him..

by Anonymousreply 12July 14, 2023 2:43 AM

How could Downey go through with that Dolittle movie? He has the worst taste of any talented actor ever. He also seems somewhat intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 13July 14, 2023 3:21 AM

Stuck on You the Siamese twin movie with Greg Kinnear perhaps? If I recall during the filming of this he met the future rabbit-faced wife while getting drunk at a bar where she was tending. He fucked her that night and ended up impregnating her. .

Luciana, R18. Four vowels is too many?

by Anonymousreply 20July 14, 2023 4:04 AM

Downsizing is supposed to be terrible.

by Anonymousreply 21July 14, 2023 4:12 AM

Right R14, but he's saying he relocated the wife and kids for the film in question. So if he met his wife while filming Stuck on You, then it's not Stuck on You.

by Anonymousreply 22July 14, 2023 4:13 AM

Elysium. Mexico. The End.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2023 4:19 AM

The first half of Downsizing is pretty funny. It’s worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 24July 14, 2023 4:24 AM

Wasn't the Great Wall movie a complete and total bomb?

by Anonymousreply 25July 14, 2023 4:24 AM

Bingo.

From the above article:

The 2016 movie "The Great Wall" is widely known as a critically panned disaster. Even its leading Hollywood star, Matt Damon, acknowledges it — in fact, he says he was aware of how terrible the movie was going to be while shooting it.

In an interview with Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Damon said the director Zhang Yimou was being pressured by the movie's Hollywood producers to alter the film and thus sacrifice what he envisioned for the story.

"I was like, this is exactly how disasters happen," Damon said. "It doesn't cohere. It doesn't work as a movie."

The Oscar-winning actor continued: "I came to consider that the definition of a professional actor, knowing you're in a turkey and going: 'OK, I've got four more months. It's the up-at-dawn siege on Hamburger Hill. I am definitely going to die here, but I'm doing it.'

"That's as shitty as you can feel creatively, I think. I hope to never have that feeling again."

"The Great Wall" was torn apart by critics, and it holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 35% and a Metacritic score of 42. One critic, Clarence Tsui, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, summarized: "'The Great Wall' is easily the least interesting and involving blockbuster of the respective careers of both its director and star."

by Anonymousreply 27July 14, 2023 4:27 AM

What about that we bought a zoo movie? That was utter crap

by Anonymousreply 28July 14, 2023 4:48 AM

i've never even heard of The Great Wall. And before Covid happened, I'd heard about almost every movie.

Not now, though.

by Anonymousreply 29July 14, 2023 5:02 AM

These 29 comments show he's done a lot of crap.

by Anonymousreply 30July 14, 2023 5:20 AM

[quote]'OK, I've got four more months. It's the up-at-dawn siege on Hamburger Hill. I am definitely going to die here, but I'm doing it.'

Why would an actor do that? It's not just the studio that suffers when they put out a terrible movie. Every one involved is tainted by it. Someone with his stature should have put their foot down and fixed it to make it right.

by Anonymousreply 31July 14, 2023 6:52 AM

He’s not that tall.

by Anonymousreply 32July 14, 2023 6:54 AM

He’s so ugly He’s looking like a troll.

by Anonymousreply 33July 14, 2023 7:08 AM

Period. Full stop.

by Anonymousreply 34July 14, 2023 7:15 AM

He looks like someone who would easily gain weight, and he has become an ugly porker. He needs to be on a strict diet until such time as he retires and is no longer in front of a camera.

by Anonymousreply 35July 14, 2023 7:15 AM

Maybe he got depressed when he switched looks with Jesse Plemons.

by Anonymousreply 36July 14, 2023 8:38 AM

Jesse Plemons is hot now. Matt Damon could never.

by Anonymousreply 37July 14, 2023 9:16 AM

I saw The Great Wall when it came out.

I remember looking forward to it because I'm a huge fan of Zhang Yimou, and even though the film seemed atypical of the movies he previously made, the concept sounded intriguing.

Plus it was an IMAX film.

Within a couple of minutes I knew it was going to be a stupid movie, and it got shittier as it went along.

by Anonymousreply 38July 14, 2023 9:26 AM

The Great Wall was an odd project borne out of producer Thomas Tull’s seeming obsession with Kaiju. (Also produced Pacific Rim, the Godzilla reboots)

Originally was going to be more of a traditional monster movie starring Henry Cavill and Benjamin Walker (who would have looked handsome together) and directed by Edward Zwick who made The Last Samurai.

I would say the Damon production went out of control due to the peculiarities of the terms of US/China coproductions (to be considered a coproduction, the Communist Party of China has to ensure things like “no Caucasian can be shown as being smarter than a Chinese person.” In return for meeting the CCP’s metrics, the studio gets to keep close to 50% of the Chinese box office gross instead of the usual 20% for other ‘outsider’ films.)

Embarras de richesses.... of stinkers. 90% of his filmography.

by Anonymousreply 40July 14, 2023 10:53 AM

So he's not depresed about being an ugly old closeted fag?

by Anonymousreply 41July 14, 2023 10:55 AM

He is a mediocre actor. But he’s fantastic with the media, clubbish and effortless and journalists love him.

by Anonymousreply 42July 14, 2023 10:58 AM

I don’t think anyone who has seen the Talented Mr. Ripley would claim Matt Damon is a mediocre actor.

But his issue is that he wanted to be a “movie star” rather than an actor, he got typecast as kind of bland, and actors like Joaquin Phoenix are pursued for roles which he probably could have pulled off.

I’m not feeling sorry for him, he’s obviously one of the richest people in Hollywood, but I can see why he’d be unsatisfied.

by Anonymousreply 43July 14, 2023 11:14 AM

I like Matt Damon and always found him pleasant looking over the decades. He doesn't make a lot of great movies though. He was better younger.

by Anonymousreply 44July 14, 2023 11:19 AM

R43 I saw TTMR when it came out. He tried hard and it’s very clear he was was trying hard.

He’s not capable of being a Joaquin Phoenix type actor. He doesn’t have Phoenix’s x-factor weirdness nor his ability. (Damon is sane, so he has that in his favour).

He’s best in his Bourne movies.

by Anonymousreply 45July 14, 2023 11:25 AM

I'm depressed because I wanted to see Oppenheimer, but when I saw Matt Damnon's stupid fat face in the trailer, I didn't want to watch the movie anymore.

Because I really hate Matt Damon.

He's box office poison to me.

by Anonymousreply 46July 14, 2023 11:33 AM

Ben Affleck must be even more depressed!

by Anonymousreply 47July 14, 2023 11:55 AM

Oh, boo hoo. Tell us when you're a bricklayer half-way through building some rich dick's monstrosity house and there are still months of back-breaking labor to go. AND you don't have the funds for a therapist.

by Anonymousreply 48July 14, 2023 2:27 PM

Yeah, Matt is no stellar actor. He’s always… fine enough.

by Anonymousreply 49July 14, 2023 2:29 PM

Does Matt still smoke - his skin looks awful.

And he has the smug affect of a former Hollywood pretty boy, who doesn't realize how much he has aged.

by Anonymousreply 50July 14, 2023 2:43 PM

THE LAST DUEL!!!

by Anonymousreply 51July 14, 2023 3:10 PM

We bought a zoo!

by Anonymousreply 52July 14, 2023 4:30 PM

Suburbicon is another one of his horrible films that goes off the rails and I'd be depressed if I were in it. I got depressed just seeing it!

by Anonymousreply 53July 14, 2023 6:30 PM

Well know he knows how everyone who watched The Great Wall felt

by Anonymousreply 54July 14, 2023 6:34 PM

Downsizing was his best movie of the 2010s.

He did a lot of sci-fi shit though.

by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2023 11:01 PM

He's made so many crappy movies (as others have aptly noted), I don't know how he narrowed it down to one.

This sounds like another episode of "Rich White People Chronicles" (the last episode featured Simple Jack Schlossberg bizarrely bitching about restaurants in an unfunny attempt to be funny) in which the dull, milquetoast Matt Damon complains about how he drags his family all over the world to live in expensive homes as he makes flop after flop, yet strangely enough, keeps getting cast. Are there really no other Basic White Guys out there?

by Anonymousreply 56July 15, 2023 12:31 AM

He deserves to be repeatedly slapped in the face and kicked in the balls for that whinny, pathetic article.

In reality, that useless cunt damon, should be making $15 an hour. Here he is making up to $25 million or more for 4 months work and he's bitching about it. His bucked tooth beaver of a wife didn't have to go with him. She must not trust him.

by Anonymousreply 57July 15, 2023 12:38 AM

It was all that fag stuff.

by Anonymousreply 58July 15, 2023 12:57 AM

R43 Like most of the Patricia Highsmith Ridley novels, The Talented Mr. Ridley is a great story and the 1999 movie had a very good director and a pitch perfect supporting cast as well as a wonderful tone with its 1950s period correct costumes and music and locations…but it neither relied on nor needed Matt Damon. Just about any actor in his age range could have played that role. Ridley is a shallow and clever sociopath. No layers.

by Anonymousreply 59July 15, 2023 5:14 AM

*Ripley^

by Anonymousreply 60July 15, 2023 5:18 AM

The only film I've ever enjoyed Matt Damon in was Team America: World Police.

by Anonymousreply 61July 15, 2023 10:30 AM

His Irish face is heading towards that 'retired suburban firefighter' territory.

by Anonymousreply 62July 15, 2023 10:51 AM

No Irish in Damon:

[quote] His father had English and Scottish ancestry, while his mother is of Finnish and Swedish descent;

by Anonymousreply 63July 15, 2023 3:09 PM

Doesn’t he wear tights in the Great Wall? And he was in his mid 40s? Fuck him. He’s so smug and lacks any self awareness. Every actor makes shitty films now and then. And he was paid out the ass for it and has the nerve to complain, considering what most of the actors in his union have to go through just to live. Douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 64July 15, 2023 3:21 PM

We Zought A Boo!

by Anonymousreply 65July 15, 2023 6:02 PM

Such a media whore.

“I actually negotiated in couples therapy — this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called,” Damon continued. “This is without knowing whether or not he was working on anything because he never tells you. He just calls you out of the blue. And so, it was a moment in my household.””

by Anonymousreply 74October 20, 2023 3:08 AM

Whatever, bitches.

I've loved him since Dead Poets Society.

He's a good guy.

Sincere, grounded.

by Anonymousreply 75October 20, 2023 3:17 AM

He used to be. He's a tone-deaf douche-bag now.

by Anonymousreply 76October 20, 2023 4:21 AM

Poor Matt Damon. So promising at one point until Jeremy Renner replaced him

by Anonymousreply 77October 20, 2023 4:27 AM

[quote]He is a mediocre actor.

Matt Damon is not good in "Oppenheimer".

He's giving a perfectly standard tv movie performance. His face and being are just not in the same film as the rest of the cast. He seems like the only "popcorn movie" actor in the film. Robert Downey Jr. is too, but he morphs into his role in the way Matt Damon never can.
