Why didn't Sondra Locke have a bigger career?

Academy award nominee in her first film, blonde and beautiful (in the zeitgeist of the 60s and 70s), versatile, held her own as co-star with Eastwood (Gauntlet, etc.). One of the few, early, women directors. She didn't get a slide in the Oscar's "In Memoriam" when she died a couple years ago. She had a very interesting biography.

Didn't Clint blackball her? Anyone know why?

by Anonymousreply 1July 11, 2023 5:24 PM

Clint had her blackballed. Clint is a prick.

by Anonymousreply 2July 11, 2023 5:25 PM

Yup, Eastwood blackballed her and pretty much ended her acting career (and her stillborn directing career).

Locke had the goods on Eastwood: dirty behind-the-table deals, his early start as a kept boy, etc.

Eastwood was/is a mean, petty fucker.

by Anonymousreply 3July 11, 2023 5:27 PM

Funny. Dye her hair red and she'd resemble Fisher. Is that his type?

by Anonymousreply 4July 11, 2023 5:30 PM

It kills me knowing that when Clint dies he will get all of these accolades about how talented he was and all that. When he is really just another power hungry man in Hollywood who screws over people who stand up to him.

by Anonymousreply 5July 11, 2023 5:31 PM

Check out her Wiki page (OP posted) for a deep dive. A few juicy details about the palimony suit against Clint, etc.

by Anonymousreply 6July 11, 2023 5:32 PM

R4 Clint's wife of many decades (he stayed married to her in the decade he was with Locke) had a "unique" face... hard to say what his "type" was... Locke was small, fragile, delicate... Dina Ruiz, a long time girlfriend later in life was dark, big, lucious..

Maggie looks like Clint's mom in that photo. Or his sporty lesbian aunt.

by Anonymousreply 8July 11, 2023 5:41 PM

R4 And Locke was much prettier than Farmer.

Locke was married to her childhood best friend Gordon Anderson. Gordon was openly gay and they shared an unbreakable bond.

by Anonymousreply 10July 11, 2023 5:54 PM

Clint convinced Sondra to have two abortions and get her tubes tied. He told her he didn't want more children. Sondra later discovered that during their relationship Clint kept a mistress with whom he had two children. Actor Scott Eastwood is one of them.

by Anonymousreply 11July 11, 2023 5:58 PM

R10 51 years married. They were still married when she dies, though they lived separately. Eastwood bought him a house. Odd story.

by Anonymousreply 12July 11, 2023 6:17 PM

The podcast You Must Remember This recently did an episode about Locke, her relationship with Eastwood, the acrimonious breakup, and how he used his clout at Warner Brothers to bury her deal with them as a director. Locke was in treatment for the breast cancer that eventually killed her and he still wouldn’t settle their lawsuit. It was odd, he really hated her.

by Anonymousreply 13July 11, 2023 6:25 PM

She stood up to him. He didn’t like it.

by Anonymousreply 14July 11, 2023 6:28 PM

It's a pattern with Clint. When he's done with someone it's like they never existed. Sondra wasn't going to leave quietly and that enraged him.

by Anonymousreply 15July 11, 2023 6:28 PM

Never liked Clint. I hope when he dies he spends all day yelling at a chair in hell, with all the other Republican schmucks

by Anonymousreply 16July 11, 2023 6:30 PM

Sondra Locke always looked to me to be perpetually dehydrated as well as hungry. Also, I never thought she was a very good actress: kind of bland, no wow factor, nothing very compelling about her.

However, it's really a shame if Clint did blackball her and her career. He's an asshole and I agree with the poster above: it will be a shame when he dies that he will inevitably get many accolades. He's a right wing bully.

by Anonymousreply 17July 11, 2023 6:34 PM

Clint didn't tell Sondra when their relationship had ended. She came home to find the locks had been changed and her belongings were in storage. According to Sondra after this happened her friend Maria Shriver asked Arnold if he would do something so awful to her. Arnold's reply was "Well yeah, I suppose I could."

by Anonymousreply 18July 11, 2023 6:36 PM

An old friend of mine was close to Sondra and heard all the horrible details of what Eastwood did to her, the absolute devastating cruelty with which he treated her. Most of his actions are known, as this thread shows, but what galled her the most was that everyone of her Hollywood friends dropped her for fear of antagonizing Clint. Everyone. (My friend was Hollywood-adjacent and too rich to truckle to Clint.)

Hollywood is, was, and always will be, completely treacherous, power-hungry, and insincere. No place for real people. The old joke is true.

Q: How do you say fuck you in Hollywood?

A: Trust me.

by Anonymousreply 19July 11, 2023 6:40 PM

She knows why.

by Anonymousreply 20July 11, 2023 6:43 PM

I always thought Anne Heche looked like her.

by Anonymousreply 21July 11, 2023 6:44 PM

Eastwood is a nasty shit.

Period.

by Anonymousreply 22July 11, 2023 6:50 PM

[quote] It kills me knowing that when Clint dies he will get all of these accolades about how talented he was and all that

[quote] Except "Unforgiven" IS the greatest western, no matter how awful he is

And he will have earned those accolades several times over. Few big directors and stars are unblemished in their personal lives and we've never heard Clint's side of the story. Probably never will.

Face it, Hollywood is a land of louses.

Clint Eastwood is a reich wing fucktard. He thinks squinting his already beady eyes qualifies as acting. How the hell did he have a career?

by Anonymousreply 25July 14, 2023 3:58 PM

I think Sondra was trans?

by Anonymousreply 26July 14, 2023 5:52 PM

Can’t say she’s not a good actress, but she never had that “I can’t wait to see her in the next thing she does” thing stars have. Also, Eastwood gave her most of the major jobs she had, for a while. She might be forgotten, now, otherwise. I remember her mainly from he Heart Is A Lonely Hunter (she was good, not brilliant), and when she played Rosemary Clooney.

by Anonymousreply 27July 14, 2023 6:01 PM

If not for Eastwood she might have accepted bigger roles. One of the conditions of being Clint's girl was that she could only make movies with him. Even the Rosemary Clooney biopic was Clint's idea. For awhile he thought about launching Sondra into a singing career. Even Sondra thought this was absurd.

by Anonymousreply 28July 14, 2023 6:09 PM

Because Clint Eastwood is a major asshole. He's been a jerk to almost all the women he's been with from what I've read.

by Anonymousreply 29July 14, 2023 6:13 PM

She was fabulous in Every Which Way But Loose!

by Anonymousreply 30July 14, 2023 6:29 PM

R28 She was ambitious. Why do you think "even she thought this was absurd"?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 31July 14, 2023 6:44 PM

Because she said so in her autobiography. It was a weird idea that Clint had for a minute but she went along with it.

BLIND ITEM

It is tough to be a permanent A list actor and a permanent A list director, but if you live as long as this guy has, then, you might have a chance. He has definitely made and starred in some incredible movies. He also made some incredible duds. He has not been married as many times as you would think, but for someone who espouses such conservative opinions, he has lived a life that is anything but.

It can be argued that the 70’s was his prime as an actor. Women literally threw themselves at him. He was great at staying out of the tabloids and made sure the women he involved himself with could stay quiet too.

He met one of the loves of his life at a party. Not just any party. This was a no holds barred Laurel Canyon 70’s orgy. Yeah, he does not really seem the orgy type. He was the type to go to an orgy and pick out one or two women and take them to his place. Oh, and definitely no drugs. Picks up women stoned and wasted but won’t touch any for himself.

The night he met her she was being pulled into a room about to have sex with a guy and another woman. Our actor steps in and takes both of the women and leads them back to his place. So, they go back to his place and enjoy some threesome fun. The woman with whom he was about to embark on a relationship actually left the next morning while the other stayed for a few days and brought over other women. Our actor had a serious kink.

The other woman showed up a few days later and explained her situation. She was married, but was in an open relationship. Very open. Over the next few years, the couple engaged in threesomes almost every time they had sex. There would be other women and other men. The girlfriend became pregnant multiple times and had multiple abortions.

It was a crazy time. In addition to the sex there were also the fights. Legendary ones. Today, police would have been called all the time. Back then, they came a few times and when they saw the actor they didn’t do anything about it. When they split, it was one of the few times our actor was splashed all over the tabloids.

by Anonymousreply 33July 14, 2023 6:51 PM

r33 Nah, that's not Sondra. They "got together" when she was filming The Outlaw Josey Wales with him. They had "met" when she auditioned, unsuccessfully, for Play Misty for Me.... but they didn't do the deed unitil TOJW.

by Anonymousreply 34July 14, 2023 7:01 PM

Was she a Sandy Dennis type? That's the vibe I always got from her. I remember seeing her in Eastwood films when I was a kid in the '80s but I have no recollection of what she was like.

by Anonymousreply 35July 14, 2023 8:22 PM

She always seemed aloof.
