Emmy Predictions 2023

I am sorry but I find it absurd that everyone has Brian Cox as Lead for this years Emmys. He was lead for seasons 1-3 but he 100% was supporting in season 4. Did they really enter him as Lead for season 4?

I know the Television Academy announced Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook were no longer eligible for the Supporting category with season 4 and were bumped to Lead in season 4. Wouldn’t they movie Cox from Lead to Supporting? The man was essentially barely in 3 episodes out of 10.

by Anonymousreply 182September 1, 2023 4:16 AM

There are no rules for lead versus supporting. Actors and their camp decide where they submit themselves.

Cox decided he wanted to still submit under lead

by Anonymousreply 1July 9, 2023 6:35 PM

R1 false. There are rules.

by Anonymousreply 2July 9, 2023 6:40 PM

I’m other awards. Emmy’s just allow the actors to place themselves in lead or supporting, which is stupid.

by Anonymousreply 3July 9, 2023 6:42 PM

In*

by Anonymousreply 4July 9, 2023 6:42 PM

No there aren't dear r2.

The only one that has rules is guest actor. Lead versus supporting is up to the actor.

You could literally Google this instead of arguing something you don't understand.

by Anonymousreply 5July 9, 2023 6:43 PM

There are a lot of rules for the Limited categories but not Drama or Comedy. Which should be updated. The idea that someone like James Galdofini could have entered himself as Supporting despite being the definite Lead is disturbing

by Anonymousreply 6July 9, 2023 6:46 PM

It's the same with the Oscars. No rules separating lead versus supporting.

Anthony Hopkins won the "Lead" Oscar for Silence of the Lambs when he had about 15 minutes of screen time.

by Anonymousreply 7July 9, 2023 6:50 PM

A case could be made based on the shadow he cast over the entire show.

But these predictions kind of suck, at least a lot of them. Don’t start me on Beef, which went off the rails.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2023 6:52 PM

R6 I agree that it’s time to update the rules for who is eligible in what category for both the Emmys and the Oscars. The Oscars used to have strict rules that were later done away with, as did the Emmys. Now it’s anyone can be in any category.

But I think if a definite lead of a series like Gandolfini in Sopranos or Bea Arthur in Maude tried entering in Supporting categories they would just not receive the nomination most times. There have been times people who were expected to get nominated didn’t because the majority of voters didn’t vote for them in the category they entered themselves.

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2023 6:53 PM

R7 Hannibal was the lead character of Silence of the Lambs. He was definitely Lead despite limited screen time.

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2023 6:55 PM

I hope Nick Offerman wins for his beautiful performance in The Last of Us. And I wish the guest actor awards would be presented at the main ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2023 6:56 PM

R8 didn’t Squid Games win awards last year when I thought it was an uneven mess. Beef is no different. Netflix shows in general are so overhyped. Wednesday was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 12July 9, 2023 6:57 PM

I hope they don't forget about Alexander Skarsgaard. For actress, I think Bella Ramsey will be hard to beat even for Sarah Snook.

by Anonymousreply 13July 9, 2023 6:57 PM

R11 Guest Actor has not been presented at the main event for decades buddy. They’ve always been at the separate event and the winners usually are asked to present at the main event after.

Nick Offerman should barely be nominated. The young black man from episode 5 deserves a nomination way more than Offerman or Bartlett. I can’t believe how overhyped episode 3 of The Last of Us was on here simply because it was about a gay couple. They at least got to live their lives. The two black youths was far sadder.

by Anonymousreply 14July 9, 2023 7:01 PM

R13 Snook is in. They aren’t giving it to Ramsey. She’s too young and new. Snook is the frontrunner.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2023 7:02 PM

Skarsgaard is not eligible for Guest Actor this year. He is in Supporting this year and many predict he will get in. Why? I don’t know. I prefer Alan Ruck finally get a nomination over Skarsgaard

by Anonymousreply 16July 9, 2023 7:03 PM

No, R9. The Oscars never had strict rules concerning who is lead and who is supporting. It was even possible to be nominated for both categories for the same performance, and Barry Fitzgerald did just that for Going My Way.

There was never a rule that only actors who gave actual supporting performances could be nominated in that category, and what we now call category fraud happened almost from the introduction of the supporting awards. Richard Burton is on screen for 85% of My Cousin Rachel (1952) while Charles Coburn is in almost 75% of The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), and both men earned supporting nominations.

by Anonymousreply 17July 9, 2023 7:08 PM

R17 yes. They did. The Oscars rules changed many times over the years. Look up why James Dean was nominated for Lead in Giant despite being Supporting. At the time he was ineligible for the supporting category.

Don’t play yourself

by Anonymousreply 18July 9, 2023 7:10 PM

R17 AGAIN, screen time doesn’t equal lead or supporting. I can be in almost every scene of the movie as the leads sidekick and that makes me a supporting character. Your role in the story played a part in whether you were supporting or lead, not who you saw more of.

by Anonymousreply 19July 9, 2023 7:11 PM

R15 That would be fine with me, I like both actresses very much.

by Anonymousreply 20July 9, 2023 7:14 PM

Bridget Everett deserves to have her name called. Best performance of the year.

Lisa Ann Walter for Abbott? She’s too over the top.

by Anonymousreply 21July 9, 2023 7:17 PM

Maria Bello is always wonderful but her role in Beef was too small and insignificant (aside from her character’s ridiculously gory ending).

by Anonymousreply 22July 9, 2023 7:19 PM

It probably won't, but I would love to see Andor nominated. In a world of terrible franchise shit, Tony Gilroy actually made a great TV show within the Disney machine.

by Anonymousreply 23July 9, 2023 7:19 PM

I hope Janelle James is nominated for "Abbott." She is terrific on that show.

by Anonymousreply 24July 9, 2023 7:32 PM

She was already nominated last year r24, I don't think you need to worry about her not getting nominated again.

by Anonymousreply 25July 9, 2023 7:36 PM

Liev Schreiber definitely deserves a nomination for A Small Light. But, I have the feeling he will be snubbed and Bel Powley will also be snubbed.

by Anonymousreply 26July 10, 2023 3:32 AM

R25 exactly. It’s not like she wasn’t nominated last year. She was. She just didn’t win.

by Anonymousreply 27July 10, 2023 3:35 AM

I hope that god awful fuggo Jenna Ortega doesn't get an Emmy nomination. Wednesday was an overrated garbage show.

by Anonymousreply 28July 10, 2023 4:01 AM

They’ve forgotten the dark horse… Sara Ramirez for her groundbreaking role as The Most Hated Character in TV history!

by Anonymousreply 29July 10, 2023 3:31 PM

I think Best Drama Series will be between Sucession and The Last of Us. Both are seriously popular.

by Anonymousreply 30July 11, 2023 12:41 AM

Lmao popular doesn’t equal a win. The nomination is the reward for those shows usually. GOT was one of the few shows that were truly popular that were winning the top award.

Succession is winning with no competition

by Anonymousreply 31July 11, 2023 1:08 AM

Yeah the Last Of Us has no chance of winning. It was better than a normal zombie show, but voters certainly don't respect it the way they respect Succession.

The biggest competition Succession has is The White Lotus. But Succession has already won for it's last two seasons and will certainly win for the final season. There isn't much suspense there.

by Anonymousreply 32July 11, 2023 1:36 AM

R32 agreed. Succession won for seasons 2 and 3 and will walk away with this win easily, especially because the final season was far superior to seasons 2 and 3 with better writing and acting all around from its cast. They really stepped up this final season in all aspects.

by Anonymousreply 33July 11, 2023 1:39 AM

I think "A Small Light" will garner more nominations than other shows mentioned here. Everyone knows the story of Anne Frank. Miep Gies' role has never been fully drawn out. This show does it, and by all accounts, it is extremely accurate. Finally, a new piece of the story.

by Anonymousreply 34July 11, 2023 1:53 AM

A Small Light wouldn’t be in the drama category

by Anonymousreply 35July 11, 2023 1:59 AM

In the late 80s, there was a TV movie called The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank which did focus a bit on Miep Gies. Mary Steenburgen played Miep. It was a decent TV movie. A Small Light was much better and I liked that the miniseries had the theme of flawed people trying to do their best under horrible circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 36July 11, 2023 2:04 AM

It's funny they're sticking to just a handful of shows for their predictions, although I agree "Succession" and "The White Lotus" are likely to vacuum up a bunch of nominations (though i doubt as many as they're suggesting).

Just three years ago "The Crown" dominated everything, but for acting nominations they're predicting only Elisabeth Debicki (who was wonderful as a hilariously neurotic and self-obsessed Princess Diana).

by Anonymousreply 37July 11, 2023 2:05 AM

R37 like all shows that stay around for years, The Crown has passed its time. It’s no longer a top contender. Look at what happened last year with This Is Us.

by Anonymousreply 38July 11, 2023 2:19 AM

I loved seasons 1-4 of the Crown, I didn't even bother finishing season 5.

by Anonymousreply 39July 11, 2023 2:34 AM

Limited Series Actress is a REALLY stacked category, but it would be a shame if Riley Keough doesn’t get a nomination for DAISY JONES & THE SIX. She was fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 40July 11, 2023 2:58 AM

R38, The Crown has always been a much bigger awards player than This Is Us, which so often functioned as a filler in major categories when bigger players took the year off. I don’t think it has a chance to win this year, but I doubt it will collapse in support the way that some expect.

by Anonymousreply 41July 11, 2023 3:17 AM

R41 as far as winking? Yes. But This Is Us was never filler in its categories and a frontrunner to win its first 3 seasons but missed despite winning the Globes and Critics choice and SAG ensemble awards.

Let’s not rewrite history.

by Anonymousreply 42July 11, 2023 3:20 AM

The limited series category is light on great shows.

Beef is the favorite but lost the plot.

The Patient? Sigh. A miss.

Dahmer was well liked but a Ryan Murphy piece.

Fleischman is in Trouble didn’t totally work.

by Anonymousreply 43July 11, 2023 6:42 PM

[quote] but it would be a shame if Riley Keough doesn’t get a nomination for DAISY JONES & THE SIX. She was fantastic.

I couldn't disagree more. I thought she was miscast and was way overshadowed by the other two women in the cast.

by Anonymousreply 49July 12, 2023 12:57 AM

Matthew McFadyen is 100% going to win best supporting actor for drama. And he should-he was fantastic as Tom in Succession.

I really want Anthony Carrigan to win best supporting actor in comedy for Barry. I just hope he doesn’t lose to Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein.. (The only acceptable one to loss to is Phil Dunster as Jaime because he was good. Roy was just there.). I’m just not sure NoHo Hank had enough to do this year.

by Anonymousreply 50July 12, 2023 1:14 AM

Is SJP in the running for Best Equetress?

by Anonymousreply 51July 12, 2023 1:15 AM

Brett doesn’t deserve to even be nominated for season 3 of Ted Lasso. Season 3 was so bad.

by Anonymousreply 52July 12, 2023 1:16 AM

R50, Carrigan and Dunster would be my top 2 choices for that category, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach from The Bear #3. I believe the winner will be Tyler James Williams from Abbott Elementary. He’s also deserving, and is on a comedy that’s actually, you know, FUNNY.

by Anonymousreply 53July 12, 2023 1:35 AM

I haven’t seen Abbot Elementary. Is it worth watching? I thought he was great as Chris in Everybody Hates Chris years ago.

by Anonymousreply 54July 12, 2023 1:50 AM

R54 I feel like you kept asking the same question last year too.

Yes, it’s worth it, hence r53 saying he’s on a show that is ACTUALLY funny.

by Anonymousreply 55July 12, 2023 3:05 AM

R34 I thought it was brilliant, but is A Small Light eligible this year?

by Anonymousreply 56July 12, 2023 3:09 AM

I'm still sticking with Bella for the win.

by Anonymousreply 57July 12, 2023 3:20 AM

For Drama Actor I think Strong and Culkin were equals. I'm glad I don't have to vote.

by Anonymousreply 58July 12, 2023 3:28 AM

Abbott is terrific. Always funny.

by Anonymousreply 59July 12, 2023 9:55 AM

R56 It's eligible.

by Anonymousreply 60July 12, 2023 12:20 PM

The weird thing is The Bear is actually eligible for Season 1 not Season 2, even though really voters will have season 2 fresh on their mind.

by Anonymousreply 61July 12, 2023 12:26 PM

R61 season 2 just dropped like two weeks ago. Of course it isn’t eligible

by Anonymousreply 62July 12, 2023 3:31 PM

The nomination announcement is happening now!

by Anonymousreply 67July 12, 2023 3:42 PM

Yvette Nicole Brown cheering for her favorites while announcing the nominations was incredibly obnoxious.

by Anonymousreply 68July 12, 2023 3:44 PM

I love that James Marsden is nominated for playing himself in Jury Duty.

by Anonymousreply 69July 12, 2023 3:44 PM

Five White Lotus ladies in the Supporting Actress Drama category.

by Anonymousreply 70July 12, 2023 3:46 PM

Yvette appears to be sporting Ozempic face.

by Anonymousreply 71July 12, 2023 3:46 PM

Succession holds this year's top spot with 27 Emmy nominations followed by The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (23) and Ted Lasso (21).

Performers with multiple noms this year: Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World), Murray Bartlett (The Last Of Us and Welcome To Chippendales), Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Family Guy), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary and Saturday Night Live), Bill Hader (performance, directing and writing for Barry), Sharon Horgan (performance and writing for Bad Sisters), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets and The Last of Us), Jason Sudeikis (performance and writing for Ted Lasso), and Ali Wong (BEEF and Tuca & Bertie).

by Anonymousreply 72July 12, 2023 3:50 PM

I wasn't expecting the actress who played Geri on Succession to be nominated for Supporting so that's a pleasant surprise.

by Anonymousreply 73July 12, 2023 3:54 PM

They basically nominated everyone from Succession this year, and J. Smith-Cameron didn't have any major competition in her category from the show with Snook elevated to Lead. She's always been great as Geri, but in terms of the final season, Justine Lupe probably had more to do.

I'm really glad they didn't stink up the Supporting nominations in Comedy with anyone from SNL like they've been doing for the past decade. Emmy voters didn't even flood the Guest Actor category with hosts like they normally do (only Quinta Brunson and Pedro Pascal got in).

by Anonymousreply 74July 12, 2023 4:09 PM

Jeremy Strong will win Lead Actor drama

Matthew Macfadyen will win Supporting Actor Drama (glad Ruck was nominated, Braun shouldn’t have been, he’s not exceptional or anything)

Sarah Snook definitely will get Lead Actress drama

Succession will win best Drama, writing and directing ( it should, Connor’s Wedding episode was fantastic).

I do think Murray or Nick Offerman will get the Guest star in a drama. That’s the one category Succession will lose. Actually, J. Cameron Smith isn’t going to win Supporting, but it’s good she was nominated.

It’s going to be a very successful Succession Emmys

by Anonymousreply 75July 12, 2023 4:10 PM

Are you sure Better Call Saul will be shut out?

by Anonymousreply 76July 12, 2023 4:13 PM

I think Jennifer Coolidge has the Supporting Actress in a Drama Emmy sewn up. That'll keep Succession from sweeping every major category, like The Crown and Schitt's Creek both did in recent years. I don't think it has a great shot at the Guest Acting categories either, although it's always possible.

Better Call Saul has never won even a single Emmy in its many seasons on the air. I don't see why that would change now.

by Anonymousreply 77July 12, 2023 4:17 PM

I’m so glad Lizzy Caplan was deservedly nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series. She was perfect in Fleishman…

I was also pleasantly surprised Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso) and Megan Fahy received deserved nominations.

All 3 elevated the material and stood out in shows stacked with talent!

Too bad the same people will probably win as always 🤮

by Anonymousreply 78July 12, 2023 4:19 PM

A Small Light was snubbed. Liev Schreiber should have had a nod for that.

Wednesday is a crappy show and Jenna Ortega can't act her way out of a paper bag.

by Anonymousreply 79July 12, 2023 4:20 PM

Glad for Christina Applegate.

by Anonymousreply 80July 12, 2023 4:26 PM

Why is Yellowstone always snubbed? Kelly Reilly does a lot of great work on that show.

by Anonymousreply 81July 12, 2023 4:26 PM

I'm glad that the Long Long Time episode of The Last of Us has a directing nomination.

by Anonymousreply 82July 12, 2023 4:39 PM

Soo. Did Harry and Meghan’s Netflix thing get any nominations 😏

by Anonymousreply 83July 12, 2023 4:53 PM

Ted Lasso is going to do well again, despite season three being mediocre. Emmy voters seem to love it.

The only acting award that would be deserved would be Phil Dunster. If Brett Goldstein somehow wins, idek, it wouldn’t make sense.

by Anonymousreply 84July 12, 2023 4:55 PM

I don't watch Yellowstone r81, and I imagine a lot of emmy voters don't either. It's the type of show more popular with middle America than the coastal crowd I believe.

by Anonymousreply 85July 12, 2023 4:58 PM

I'm shocked how all 5 women for the White Lotus made it into Supporting Actress.

I know they just nominated everyone from White Lotus, but we are kidding ourselves to say Will Sharpe deserves an Emmy nomination. But whatever, I'm sure he is happy.

by Anonymousreply 86July 12, 2023 5:00 PM

Very happy Jury Duty was nominated as was James Marsden. Wasn't sure the voters would give love to that show, but I enjoyed it a lot.

by Anonymousreply 87July 12, 2023 5:02 PM

House of the Dragon managed a best drama nom, but none of the cast got nominated.

by Anonymousreply 88July 12, 2023 5:05 PM

I’m hoping Jeremy Allen White wins for The Bear.

Why are there so many supporting actress/actor nomination spots? There’s eight for drama, but only five for lead. I think there should be five for all categories.

Only nominate the very best.

by Anonymousreply 89July 12, 2023 5:07 PM

R89, the number of slots depend on the number of submissions.

20 – 80 submissions = 5 nominations 81 – 160 submissions = 6 nominations 161 – 240 submissions = 7 nominations > 240 submissions = 8 nominations

by Anonymousreply 90July 12, 2023 5:32 PM

The idea is it let's more things be nominated, but supporting this year is just dominated by White Lotus and Succession.

But it's no surprise voters are in love with those two shows.

by Anonymousreply 91July 12, 2023 5:36 PM

Long Long Time should win for writing, acting, gardening, everything.

by Anonymousreply 92July 12, 2023 5:44 PM

Nick Offerman should win for the little giggle he let out when he saw those strawberries. That was freaking adorable.

by Anonymousreply 93July 12, 2023 5:56 PM

R74 r73 she was nominated last year for season 3 as well. This isn’t her first nomination.

by Anonymousreply 94July 12, 2023 6:23 PM

R81 it was nominated for Best Drama last year

by Anonymousreply 95July 12, 2023 6:26 PM

R80 why? Everyone predicted her getting nominated. Her nomination wasn’t a surprise to anyone. Everyone knew it was gonna happen lol

by Anonymousreply 96July 12, 2023 6:27 PM

R85 it has fans everywhere lol. It’s viewed as a soap opera by most though.

by Anonymousreply 97July 12, 2023 6:28 PM

R91 false. The amount of shows and performances submitted now is 4x+ what it used to be even just 20 years ago because of the Academy allowing streaming shows to get nominated as well. Now there are so many shows from so many channels and streaming platforms that they up the nominations based on the amount of submissions. It has nothing to do with trying to nominate everyone. If that was the case the lead categories would also have 8 nominations. The lead categories have less because there are much less lead performances submitted than supporting.

by Anonymousreply 98July 12, 2023 6:31 PM

The Bear is a comedy?

by Anonymousreply 99July 12, 2023 6:33 PM

Hon we are saying the same thing r98.

More submissions in a category leads to more nominations in a category, therefore it gives the possibility for more of those things to be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 100July 12, 2023 6:34 PM

Very happy for Sharon Horgan. Bad Sisters was a great show. And thrilled for Keri Russell. Many predicted she would be a surprise nominee and 2 out of 3 people who did the EW predictions named her as who they want to see as a surprise nominee.

by Anonymousreply 101July 12, 2023 6:53 PM

I am SHOCKED Will Sharpe and Theo James got nominated. Literally no one expected them to get nominated. Everyone predicted Plaza, and Fahy while pretty much saying Coolidge and Abraham were 100% getting nominated. Abraham was the only male they predicted getting nominated from the show.

by Anonymousreply 102July 12, 2023 6:57 PM

There was one website that thought Tom Hollander had a shot at being a surprise nominee and possibly Sabrina Impacciatore but that was it. No one predicted Theo James or Will Sharpe.

by Anonymousreply 103July 12, 2023 7:00 PM

House of the Dragon was not very good, but the man who played the king was phenomenal. Oh, well.

by Anonymousreply 104July 12, 2023 7:01 PM

Hey, not all of us got nominated.

by Anonymousreply 105July 12, 2023 7:01 PM

Yep r102. People underestimated how much voters loved The White Lotus.

by Anonymousreply 106July 12, 2023 7:06 PM

No one expected The White Lotus to get as many acting nominations with season 2 as it did with season 1. I am thrilled for all of them though, and wouldn’t have nominated the ones not nominated either, although Tom Hollander should be nominated over Theo James. Someone upthread mentioned Will Sharpe but he was much better than James.

by Anonymousreply 107July 12, 2023 7:16 PM

I am thrilled for Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodards nominations for The Last of Us. Even moreso than Offerman and Bartlett. Their story was far more sad and tragic. At least the two white gays got to grow old together and chose when to end their lives.

by Anonymousreply 108July 12, 2023 7:20 PM

It should be 5 nominations per category period.

by Anonymousreply 109July 12, 2023 7:48 PM

Nah. Too many shows entered now. It makes sense that they nominate more now

by Anonymousreply 110July 12, 2023 7:51 PM

Everyone predicted Harrison Ford would be a double nominee but he was snubbed. Elizabeth Olsen was also snubbed but I actually didn’t think she should be nominated. Her Candy was nothing like the actual Candy.

by Anonymousreply 111July 12, 2023 8:14 PM

I think Anthony Carrigan is so hot; I wish he'd had some gay sex scenes on Barry.

by Anonymousreply 112July 12, 2023 8:23 PM

Can you stop with the “no one thought they’d be nominated” and “no one expected”?! Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 113July 12, 2023 8:30 PM

As of right now, the Emmys are not happening with the Waiter’s Strike going on.

by Anonymousreply 114July 12, 2023 8:32 PM

Cousin Greg was nominated? Ew

by Anonymousreply 115July 12, 2023 8:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 121July 12, 2023 9:21 PM

R121 ummmm no. Braun was good but he was given almost nothing to do this season. His nominations for seasons 2 and 3 were worthy and he should have been nominated for the first season also.

I am thrilled Alan Ruck finally got recognized

by Anonymousreply 122July 12, 2023 9:24 PM

[quote]I think Anthony Carrigan is so hot; I wish he'd had some gay sex scenes on Barry.

Out of all the nominees from Supporting Actor in a Comedy, you want a sex scene from Anthony Carrigan? Phil Dunster, James Marsden and Brett Goldstein are right there, and even Ebon Moss-Bachrach is a lot of people's type. That category is stacked with some legitimately hot men.

(Sorry, Henry Winkler, but it's not 1976 anymore.....)

by Anonymousreply 123July 12, 2023 9:29 PM

R74 she was nominated for season 3 last year.

I think you are missing that Anthony Carrigan plays a gay character in Barry r123. It could have actually happened.

by Anonymousreply 125July 12, 2023 9:53 PM

I would’ve appreciated a Hank/Cristobal fuck scene. Definitely could’ve been hot.

by Anonymousreply 126July 12, 2023 9:56 PM

I have a feeling that voters will be torn between Strong and Culkin therefore will vote for Cox.

by Anonymousreply 127July 12, 2023 10:28 PM

R127, or me, finally.

by Anonymousreply 128July 12, 2023 10:29 PM

Cox isn’t winning. He should have entered as supporting. He would 100% win there. He was in only 3 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 129July 12, 2023 10:32 PM

Wednesday in for Best Comedy but not Poker Face???

And only one Guest Actress nom from Poker Face—Judith Light? I thought Ellen Barkin, S. Epatha Merkenson, Chloe Sevigny, and especially, Cherry Jones might get nominated. I am glad Cherry got a not for Succession, but she was even better on PF—campy and evil.

by Anonymousreply 130July 12, 2023 10:48 PM

Even if he did go Supporting, I don't think Cox could beat MacFadyen. People have been praising Culkin, but I think MacFadyen got the best and showiest material out of anyone on that final season.

R130, I'd also add Lil Rel Howrey for Guest Actor. Poker Face should have earned far more nominations than it did.

by Anonymousreply 131July 12, 2023 10:50 PM

MacFayden has the most punchable face ever

by Anonymousreply 132July 12, 2023 10:52 PM

I think Cox has his best chance of winning in Lead Actor. There’s no way he would win against Matthew McFadyen. MM has it locked up. There still is a minuscule chance he could beat Culkin or Strong.

I think Jeremy Strong will win.

by Anonymousreply 133July 12, 2023 10:53 PM

Alexander Skarsgard doesn't stand a chance against MacFadyen. Shit.

by Anonymousreply 134July 12, 2023 10:53 PM

No one does. He was perfect as Tom. He made that character so interesting/funny/pathetic/likable/detestable/embarrassing/etc.

The character had a roller coaster of a season and MacFadyen nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 135July 12, 2023 10:58 PM

R133 he did great but he was not a lock last year and isn’t this year. He will most likely win but a lock he ain’t. He was an upset last year. Culkin was the frontrunner.

by Anonymousreply 136July 12, 2023 11:18 PM

I agree with r133. Matthew MacFayden is a lock, it's not even conceivable to me that someone else might win that race.

He wasn't a lock going into the Emmys last year, but that was last year.

by Anonymousreply 137July 12, 2023 11:23 PM

You also claim everyone in Hollywood is desperate to work with him Lmao. Boy please.

by Anonymousreply 138July 12, 2023 11:25 PM

All I have to say is that Sarah Snook better count her blessings that Euphoria season 3 can’t seem to happen because if it did we would be seeing Zen get Emmy #3

by Anonymousreply 139July 12, 2023 11:32 PM

R136 if Culkin was still in supporting, I’d agree Macfadyen might not have this in the bag. But since culkin’s lead, the only possible competition is F. Murray Abraham for White Lotus. ASkars was good in Succession, but not better than Macfadyen.

The fight on the balcony, the phone convo on the plane with the kids after Logan died, and the post-Bitey ‘I like nice things’ scene with Shiv are getting him that second Emmy.

by Anonymousreply 140July 12, 2023 11:51 PM

r75 What do you think are Hiam Abbas, Cherry Jones, and Harriet Walter's chances in the Guest Actress Drama category?

by Anonymousreply 141July 12, 2023 11:53 PM

I think most predictors think Harriet Walter has the Guest Actress in a Drama Emmy easily.

by Anonymousreply 142July 12, 2023 11:54 PM

She should win for Ted Lasso too. Double Emmy wins for being a bad mother

by Anonymousreply 143July 13, 2023 12:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 144July 13, 2023 12:04 AM

Also, how did Better Call Saul get 2 episodes nominated for writing? Succession only has one episode up for writing ("Connor's Wedding"), but I can think of at least 3 other episodes that could easily have qualified.

[quote]I think most predictors think Harriet Walter has the Guest Actress in a Drama Emmy easily.

Interesting; I think Walters is always great and a scene-stealer in that role, but I think Hiam Abbas killed it in her triumphant return to the show this season. Her final line in the show ("He broke my heart -- and yours, too.") destroyed me. Coincidentally, Harriet Walter is a Guest Actress nominee this year for both comedy and drama.

by Anonymousreply 145July 13, 2023 12:04 AM

R145 DESTROYED YOU? It was that serious?

by Anonymousreply 146July 13, 2023 12:07 AM

r146 This is a gay site -- what are we if not drama queens?

And for future reference, the correct response to a post such as mine is MARY!

by Anonymousreply 147July 13, 2023 12:11 AM

R145, some shows choose to only submit single episodes for categories like Writing in order to maximize their chances of winning. It's probably Jesse Armstrong's decision to only choose what he thinks is the best episode of the season (and I think he chose correctly).

by Anonymousreply 148July 13, 2023 12:15 AM

"Fire Island" received 2 Emmy Nominations...Writing for Joel Lee Booster& Best Television Movie(Booster was EP on the movie).

Did Billy send "Congrats" to Joel or a Letter Bomb?

Best Trailer "Bros"...I don't WTF happened to the movie, Luke was Great in the movie though!!

by Anonymousreply 149July 13, 2023 12:27 AM

R141, I don’t think their chances are great, but I wouldn’t rule any of them out either. Melanie Lynskey is probably the one to beat in that category. If not her, it’s probably a toss-up between any of those the three Succession women.

What probably hurts them so that none of them really have a showcase episode. All of them have effective scenes, but they don’t dominate any episode in which they appear.

by Anonymousreply 150July 13, 2023 1:31 AM

I’d choose Hiam Abbas personally just because I loved the scene of her letting Kerry sit with Logan’s exes at the funeral. That was so funny to me.

Cherry was great in her one episode, but we didn’t get enough of her. I wanted more Nan.

by Anonymousreply 151July 13, 2023 2:21 AM

Is Hiam related to Mahmoud.

by Anonymousreply 152July 13, 2023 2:24 AM

R151 she isn’t the one who let Kerry sit with them. Carol went and got her and told her to sit with them, not Marcia. Marcia just finally showed a little compassion to her.

by Anonymousreply 153July 13, 2023 2:39 AM

The over-the-top adoration for Abbass on Succession is one of those DL quirks that I don’t quite share, but I still appreciate. It feels like a very specific thing to DataLounge, in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 154July 13, 2023 2:50 AM

Oops, you’re right r153. Thanks!

by Anonymousreply 155July 13, 2023 2:53 AM

MacFayden has a distractingly huge head. He reminds me of a Thanksgiving Day parade balloon

by Anonymousreply 156July 13, 2023 5:30 AM

I can’t believe I thought he was attractive when he placed Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice…although the role does seem to attract actors who age poorly (see Colin Firth).

by Anonymousreply 157July 13, 2023 7:18 AM

It seems like no regular network shows get nominated for an Emmy any longer. It's all streaming shows.

Nothing on a regular network is worthy?

by Anonymousreply 158July 13, 2023 8:22 AM

It sucks that Helene Yorke was overlooked for Best Actress/Comedy for The Other Two.

She should have gotten Christina Applegate's or Rachel Brosnahan's spot.

by Anonymousreply 159July 13, 2023 8:34 AM

Same, R154. I also didn't understand the adoration for the other supporting actors like Karl and Frank. Rewatching the whole series, they had very little to do until the last season where they had a line or two more per episode. "Oh, they knocked it out of the park, blah, blah." Sure, they were good in their roles but not outstanding. Same for Cherry Jones.

Regardless, it will be a tough choice between Culkin and Strong. Tom ftw in Supporting. I do have horses in this race. And Brian Cox as Lead Actor? Fuck off!

by Anonymousreply 160July 13, 2023 10:10 AM

[quote]Nothing on a regular network is worthy?

Ahem.

by Anonymousreply 161July 13, 2023 11:26 AM

R157 I’m the opposite- didn’t like him in P&P (hated the hair) but found him quite attractive as Tom. The big forehead and big nose don’t put me off. I bet he’s hot as hell in person. And he’s very tall.

Colin held on to his looks for a long time, too.

by Anonymousreply 162July 13, 2023 11:55 AM

R158 Andor and The Crown are the only streaming shows that were nominated for Best Drama.

by Anonymousreply 163July 13, 2023 12:04 PM

MacFayden isn’t particularly attractive and has never been regarded as such. Why you are desperately trying to act like he’s some beauty is weird. He’s talented. If he were more attractive he would probably have been tried to make into a leading man years ago by Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 164July 13, 2023 12:08 PM

Succession, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, Yellowjackets are all premium cable shows that get added to the channels streaming platform also. They aren’t “streaming shows” though. The Bachelor is added to streaming hours after it airs also, doesn’t make it a streaming show though. It’s still on ABC. All shows are added to streaming now. But these shows all originally air on a channel.

Better Call Saul is a basic cable network show that is then added to AMC+. Again, a channel show.

Andor and The Crown are streaming shows.

by Anonymousreply 165July 13, 2023 12:13 PM

R164 to each his own. I think he’s hot. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I didn’t know I was being desperate about it!

He definitely is talented, we agree on that.

by Anonymousreply 166July 13, 2023 12:47 PM

I don’t think Sarah Snook is really that great. Am alone in this? How difficult is it to play a super cold bitch? All the brothers and Tom broke my heart at various points in this series. Shiv was just nasty.

by Anonymousreply 167July 13, 2023 2:08 PM

R167 what???? Lmaooooo You should have kept this comment to yourself. Between this and you thinking Marcia is the one who invited Kerry to sit with the exes, I’m convinced you didn’t even really watch the show.

by Anonymousreply 168July 13, 2023 2:12 PM

Are there any trannies or drag queens that are gonna steal awards from the real men, like the did at the Tony's?

by Anonymousreply 169July 13, 2023 2:15 PM

R168 I thought Marcia invited Kerry to sit with them, not r167. We’re two different people :)

I should do a rewatch, though.

by Anonymousreply 170July 13, 2023 3:13 PM

Way too many noms from the same few shows when there is so much great work being done on TV these days.

by Anonymousreply 171July 13, 2023 5:37 PM

The guy who played Karl in Succession deserves at least a nomination for his speech to Kendall before the presentation. “I know a thing or two about a thing or two…”. One of my favorite moments from the whole series. He 2as fantastic

by Anonymousreply 172July 13, 2023 6:43 PM

So if the strike is still going on when the Emmys air, will nobody attend? Or will they all wear some color or pin in solidarity?

by Anonymousreply 173July 14, 2023 2:01 PM

So Amber Riley was actually on live last night explaining the strike and why actors are getting more involved this time, and yes it’s to support the writers but it’s also for more job security for actors also. She said it has a lot to do with what they’re trying to do with AI now.

by Anonymousreply 174July 14, 2023 2:17 PM

Rumor is Emmys might have to be lushed to January. A week after the “new” Golden Glibes?

by Anonymousreply 175July 16, 2023 4:36 AM

[quote]So if the strike is still going on when the Emmys air, will nobody attend? Or will they all wear some color or pin in solidarity?

If it's anything like the 1980 SAG/AFTRA strike, none of the actors will attend and the hosts will be has-beens. The only acting nominee to show up was Powers Boothe, and he actually won, but he was never nominated again. The only attendees were writers and producers; it was the most boring Emmys ever.

by Anonymousreply 176July 20, 2023 3:37 AM

Elton John was nominated for Best Variety Special (Live) for his Farewell from Dodger Stadium special.

If he wins, he'll have the EGOT.

by Anonymousreply 177July 21, 2023 10:33 PM

I wish the actors on What We Do In the Shadows would get nominated, since it’s a comedy with actual laughs and humor. They are all great, but Matt Berry as Lazlo is the best comedic performance on tv.

by Anonymousreply 178July 23, 2023 4:43 AM

Yes, Matt Berry is fantastic!!

by Anonymousreply 179July 23, 2023 5:21 AM

[quote] If he wins, he'll have the EGOT.

Such a meaningful achievement!

by Anonymousreply 180July 23, 2023 5:25 AM

Niece Nash deserves it for Dahmer.

by Anonymousreply 181July 23, 2023 5:38 AM

I'll say!
