Remembering the time that Rae Dawn Chong called Oprah Winfrey a Field Nigger

And wondering if I’m the only one who finds this hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 136July 22, 2023 4:39 PM

The link is annoying so here's the full quote:

“The thing that’s really great about Oprah that you can’t take away from her is that she’s a great brown-noser,” she admitted in the audio clip obtained by TMZ. “If you were in a room with her, she would pick the most powerful person and she’ll become best friends with them. When we worked with her the one thing about Oprah, she was that fat chick that was the wannabe cheerleader in school, that was the student council president that was best friends with the principal…She was that fat chick in school that did everything and everybody loved her. That’s Oprah.”

“You got to respect her no matter how vile she is, ultimately because she’s all about Oprah and she’s boring,” she continued. “But aside from that you have to kind of go, ‘hello, hats off. You’ve done an amazing thing. You have actually shifted the DNA of the Universe.’ In terms of thinking of power structure… If you looked at the way she looks, she looks like if it was 60 years ago she would’ve been a housekeeper, luckily. She would’ve not been a house nigger, she would’ve been a field nigger…so I give her props.”

by Anonymousreply 1July 8, 2023 7:38 AM

Well, that's a quote for the ages if I ever saw one. Hilarious, plus no word of a lie.

by Anonymousreply 2July 8, 2023 7:48 AM

“You’ shur is ugly!”

by Anonymousreply 3July 8, 2023 7:55 AM

There's no way to be able to apply current reasoning to definitely conclude that someone would have had a role in the house or in the field.

by Anonymousreply 4July 8, 2023 7:57 AM

Whaaaat?!

Cocaine is a helluva drug!

by Anonymousreply 5July 8, 2023 8:13 AM

R4 She's saying that Oprah is so ugly she wouldn't be allowed in the house.

by Anonymousreply 6July 8, 2023 8:43 AM

Is this the woman with raisin titties?

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2023 8:43 AM

R6 = Martha Stewart, Domestic Goddess

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2023 8:44 AM

I thought slaves who were working in the house were the preferred ones, regardless of their looks?

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2023 9:31 AM

That's how celebrity works, whether you're a chamber maid or a field n*gger. You suck up to the people who can do you some good. Add a little smarts and good timing and you're a winner. Most truly successful people started out rather humbly. The nepo-babies don't get it because life is too easy. They don't have to work for it

This women sounds like sour grapes, because I had to google her. No one has to google Oprah

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2023 9:50 AM

This is an utter classic.

NOW THIS A READ FOR THE AGES!!!!

She read her for filth, took a breath, dragged her again- the read her for good.

by Anonymousreply 11July 8, 2023 10:05 AM

R9 Depended on the owner, but lighter-skinned slaves were often used in the house.

by Anonymousreply 12July 8, 2023 10:16 AM

"You just a HEIFER, haha"

by Anonymousreply 13July 8, 2023 10:24 AM

It's funny that DL prints the N-word but not Еdwin (or Mоntаnеz).

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2023 11:01 AM

Daaaamn! That is quite a quote. Why did Rae hate Oprah so much?

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2023 11:19 AM

Wow, first C. Thomas Howell goes off the rails and now her. What happened on the set of "Soul Man" all those years ago? Will Julia Louis-Dreyfus be next?

by Anonymousreply 16July 8, 2023 11:20 AM

Jealousy. RDC was very pretty and a nepo baby. She was jealous of Oprah’s success

by Anonymousreply 17July 8, 2023 11:22 AM

[quote] She read her for filth, took a breath, dragged her again- the read her for good.

That really was a lot of vitriol.

Oprah must be a really horrible person, to elicit that kind of strong emotion.

by Anonymousreply 18July 8, 2023 11:24 AM

[quote]No one has to google Oprah

Which is pretty much exactly what Ms. Chong was saying. I don't see it so much as insulting as an incredibly back-handed compliment.

by Anonymousreply 19July 8, 2023 11:24 AM

Big talk from a woman who only has a career because she fucked her away across the D list.

by Anonymousreply 20July 8, 2023 11:24 AM

[quote] And wondering if I’m the only one who finds this hilarious.

You are, OP.

And since you asked for honesty:

The caftan makes you look fat because you ARE fat.

The odor is coming from your perineum because you wipe back to front.

You are 63 and you don't look 45.

No , I don't think your mother called you a "lousy, fat sodomite" because of the dementia.

by Anonymousreply 21July 8, 2023 11:26 AM

[quote] Jealousy. RDC was very pretty and a nepo baby. She was jealous of Oprah’s success.

"Very" may be an exaggeration.

by Anonymousreply 22July 8, 2023 11:28 AM

And where is Rae D(ong) Chong these days?

Not an Oprah fan (at all), but come on, Rae. The field ni**er accomplished way more than you will ever be able to do so.

by Anonymousreply 23July 8, 2023 11:30 AM

Harpo??

Who dis woman????

by Anonymousreply 24July 8, 2023 11:32 AM

Rae Dawn also “discovered” Chris Pratt, so fuck her for that.

by Anonymousreply 25July 8, 2023 12:28 PM

Why, after ten years are we even talking about this? Does anyone doubt Oprah is a sycophant?

by Anonymousreply 26July 8, 2023 12:40 PM

R18, no- this is more than hate- this is bigotry of the first order. Very ugly and not at all funny. This is not a too many cocktails private conversation. This was an interview for the public. This kind of shit is exactly what gives permission for trolls to act on their bigotry- think MAGA a few years later.

Oprah, by the way, was great in Color Purple.

by Anonymousreply 27July 8, 2023 12:50 PM

Op is using this story as a way to type the N-word in the subject line of his thread, and pass it off as "But I didn't say it. Rae Dawn Chong said it!"

Disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 28July 8, 2023 12:58 PM

Oprah reached the heights, so her methods cannot be denied. I doubt she cares who was left in her wake. But, people like her who blatantly ass kiss VIPs are going to engender hate. You can be an Oprah, or you can be a Keanu who's nice to everyone. Oprah's methods work fine for her as she made it to the top and is obscenely wealthy, i.e., she has FU money. But most people would be smart to be nice to everyone because you may see them again going diwn the ladder.

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2023 12:59 PM

Going Dawn the Ladder???

by Anonymousreply 30July 8, 2023 1:03 PM

How come I never read about Barbara Walters being an ass kisser? She definitely cultivated top celebs and politicians, and eventually, she gained popularity and credibility. Sort of like Anderson Cooper. In fact of all the so called journalists who are out here with similar jobs, Anderson is probably the only one who never had to kiss ass. Oprah came long way. A very long way. And she had to cultivate celebrities to get they on her show, to help build her brand. Ellen did it too. In fact Ellen was very obvious about it.

by Anonymousreply 31July 8, 2023 1:03 PM

[quote]But most people would be smart to be nice to everyone because you may see them again going diwn the ladder.

Yes, don't be ambitious or bigots will be justified spewing their vile bigotry about you during future radio interviews.

by Anonymousreply 32July 8, 2023 1:05 PM

The insult is very confusing because, in theory, “field” would be real and “house” be fake and insulting.

by Anonymousreply 33July 8, 2023 1:08 PM

would be*

by Anonymousreply 34July 8, 2023 1:10 PM

R33, light skinned people worked in the house and darker people worked in the field, back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 35July 8, 2023 1:12 PM

Rae Dawn, honey, can you sleep with one eye open? Better start practicing.

Or as DL fave Whoopi Goldberg so eloquently told us so many years ago "You in danger, gurl."

by Anonymousreply 36July 8, 2023 1:28 PM

Does Ray Dong have a Fan Club President? May I apply?

by Anonymousreply 37July 8, 2023 1:47 PM

Since Oprah can probably buy and sell Raw Dawn Chong a thousand times over and still have plenty of money left over, Oprah would be entitled to say " who's the field nigger now, bitch?"

by Anonymousreply 38July 8, 2023 1:54 PM

[quote] At 19 years old, Chris Pratt was waiting tables at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant in Maui when he was scouted by Chong; she cast him in her directorial debut, the short horror film Cursed Part 3, which was filmed in Los Angeles in 2000.[7][8][9]

The Nepo Baby who unleashed AWG Chris Pratt upon Hollywood has opinions about self-made women.

I thought she was good in the horror anthology and the Jagger video.

Oprah’s crimes against humanity: Dr Phil & Dr Oz

Rae Dawn Chong’s: Chris Pratt

by Anonymousreply 41July 8, 2023 3:54 PM

Tom Cruise for a redemption. Sorry, but she came along when I needed a strong black woman on tv and she did it.

We’re pissy because we haven’t seen weird shit. She was right about Letterman.

by Anonymousreply 42July 8, 2023 5:28 PM

I always remember Chris Rock's bit on her. "Rae Dawn Chong is like I'm Chinese, I'm Irish, I'm Scotch. Bitch, you black."

by Anonymousreply 43July 8, 2023 5:34 PM

I absoutely agree with Rae Dawn Chong and the quote about Orca. It's a great quote because it is true!!

by Anonymousreply 44July 8, 2023 5:37 PM

@r41, "—Dead Even Tie"

Nah, I can fuck Chris Pratt

by Anonymousreply 45July 8, 2023 5:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 47July 8, 2023 5:50 PM

I liked her in Commando.

Or was it young Alyssa Milano whom I liked in that?

At any rate, yes the quote is funny and some of you people in this thread are very much not fun.

by Anonymousreply 48July 8, 2023 6:01 PM

OP that is right up there with the stepmother saying Oprah yelled "Negroes in the house!" when she and her father visited Oprah.

Why does nobody call out the fake Stedman relationship? I will give Rae Dawn Chong credit for speaking out, even though she inflicted the worst Chris on us.

by Anonymousreply 49July 8, 2023 6:17 PM

Oprah and Rae Dawn Chong were both cast in The Color Purple, although Rae Dawn had a much smaller part. I recall reading somewhere that Oprah was apparently a real cunt to her.

by Anonymousreply 50July 8, 2023 6:20 PM

If that’s the case, R50, then Rae’s criticism of Oprah ten years ago is well deserved.

Once a cunt on the set of a film, ALWAYS a cunt. Right, DL? That’s the standard.

by Anonymousreply 51July 8, 2023 6:42 PM

Isn't that incorrect usage of the phrase.

Shouldn't Oprah be a House version, not a field version since she's treated better and gets all the benefits of working in the big house.

by Anonymousreply 52July 8, 2023 6:44 PM

[quote] She was right about Letterman.

What did Oprah say about Letterman?

by Anonymousreply 53July 8, 2023 6:47 PM

That she's still pissed at the Uma bit?

by Anonymousreply 54July 8, 2023 6:50 PM

R52 The way I read it was that Rae Dawn was saying that if Oprah had no natural ambition/charisma, she would have been a field nigger. But that if Oprah was Oprah then, she'd be a housekeeper. Now though, she gets to be a billionaire and an icon.

by Anonymousreply 55July 8, 2023 6:52 PM

I interpreted it as Rae saying Oprah kissed whitey’s ass (and the right whitey, not just anyone) and so they let her sit with the power players. Which manages to make Rae sound like a whiny victim and completely dismisses Oprah as any sort of a talent all one fell swoop.

by Anonymousreply 56July 8, 2023 6:58 PM

R40 - or the master's mixed kids from rape...

by Anonymousreply 57July 8, 2023 7:12 PM

Stedman’s in the house

by Anonymousreply 58July 9, 2023 12:04 PM

After reading the entire statement, she really must have had some issues at the time. She didn't just say it on the spur of the moment, it was totally thought out for a long, long time. In fairness, she was also going through her divorce to C. Thomas Howell, but I really wondered how anyone could have such genuine dislike for someone. It wasn't just an observation, it was completely personal.

by Anonymousreply 59July 9, 2023 3:40 PM

I know nothing about the bad blood between Rae Dawn Chong and Oprah but I’m always happy to see that Oprah is not immune to criticism.

Oh, I don’t take issue with Oprah’s ambition or even her obscene wealth (though I do think people at that level of wealth have a greater obligation to pony up when so many are homeless and hungry.

But what I really take issue with is Oprah’s cultivation of this public image as a compassionate, intelligent, sensitive, woke individual when she parties with the likes of Clarence Thomas and members of the Horatio Alger Association.

Yes, she worked extremely hard. But she is 100% phony.

by Anonymousreply 60July 9, 2023 4:10 PM

I think Oprah underestimates the role that luck (right place, right time) played in her success.

Of course she is a very hard worker and deserves her success. I think she’s done a lot of good, especially earlier in her career when she really did seem to want to help people.

But then she became more about slinging merch and snake oil salesmen.

I’ve said this before, but Mel Robbins’s podcast gives me early Oprah vibes. Very earnest and geared towards breaking things down into usable, doable steps. I find it really helpful. I’m interested to see if Robbins becomes the new Oprah.

by Anonymousreply 61July 9, 2023 8:53 PM

Maybe I’m just conflating her with the character Sophia, but I doubt someone would have gotten much work out of her in either location/role.

by Anonymousreply 62July 9, 2023 9:49 PM

Isn’t Oprah the same fatso who got $50 million from Sirius XM to create a channel and did zero work?

by Anonymousreply 63July 9, 2023 9:55 PM

R31 Barbara Walters' father owned one of those swaggy 50s nightclubs and he was friends with some powerful and influential men in various businesses. One of her father's wealthy friends made a loan to her when she was just starting out in the business. She never really had to kiss ass because she was a somewhat known entity.

by Anonymousreply 64July 9, 2023 10:15 PM

Just thinking bad thoughts about Oprah invited retaliation. Scary lady.

by Anonymousreply 65July 9, 2023 10:26 PM

Light skin blacks - usually the product of rape, worked in the house and took care of the family. Dark skin blacks worked in the field. It’s the beginning of the great divide between light skin and dark skin blacks - ie the paper bag test. So for generations like skin black people received preferential treatment and access in society that dark skin people did not. The shit still exist to this day.

Rae is just saying given the way Oprah looks, 60 years ago (ambition or no ambition) the only role in society she would have been able to play is a maid due to her fatness. her darkness and her ugliness.

I picture Oprah with some Tracy Flick level of ambition. Rae was the bigger star at the time of Color Purple. At least she was known and had a famous father and I am guessing grew up in Hollywood circles. I am just guessing on the set Oprah probably buddy buddied up to her at first until she realized she was of no real use in helping her. I am guessing Rae in the beginning took pity and was nice to her but felt dissed when this unknown and less attractive talent had the nerve to dump her and chase bigger fish. She probably witnessed first hand Oprah’s manic social climbing (Andy Cohen levels) and was disgusted by it. I am sure she thought worse of it when she saw it actually worked.

The biggest read to me and probably the most true is that Oprah is boring.

by Anonymousreply 66July 9, 2023 10:44 PM

Thomas Jefferson was nice enough to let the children of the girl he kept locked away and raped repeatedly work as slaves in his home.

by Anonymousreply 67July 9, 2023 10:46 PM

This is still one of my favorite Oprah interviews.

“Girl I’ll buy you and sell you back to yourself for less…”

I always thought Walters was a nepo baby. Those popular nightclub connections in NY in the 50s could be very powerful for the ruthlessly ambitious. God Walters is unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 69July 9, 2023 11:12 PM

Rae Don Chong, the one who WASN'T Shari Belafonte.

All I really remember Rae from was as the homo Sapien who taught the other cave people how to fuck face to face in "Quest for Fire". She deserved a golden globe nod for that, in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 70July 9, 2023 11:32 PM

Rae Dawn is still thin and attractive and not broke so she wins.

I remember the Oprah Show immediately after "The Color Purple." Massive sucking of Quincy Jones' dick even when he wasn't a guest.

by Anonymousreply 71July 9, 2023 11:55 PM

R71=RDC posting from her one bedroom apartment in Tarzana wondering when the heat will break.

by Anonymousreply 72July 10, 2023 12:39 AM

Oprah's life will forever be about yoyo dieting, unveiling her latest weight loss, promoting some charlatan to guru status, exploiting has-been trainwrecks, and showing off her rarified taste in powdered truffles, cashmere sweatsuits and mail-order lobster pot pies. Her achievements are massive tut I am no longer a fan. If you enjoy her, that's your prerogative.

by Anonymousreply 73July 10, 2023 1:26 AM

Whatever grudge Rae Dawn is carrying is probably based in real interactions she had with Oprah, but it’s a bit gross for someone who benefited intensely from family money and connections to insult someone who truly did make herself. Who gives a shit if Oprah was a grasping, social climbing, Tracey Flick of the worst order? She grew up very poor, in an unstable household where she was abused, giving birth when she was fourteen to a stillborn child conceived as the result of rape. That’s more awful than most can imagine, and as an adult Oprah could have done any number of destructive things, or (like many of us) made nothing of herself. Oprah couldn’t afford to play patty-cake with the likes of Rae Dawn Chong when Oprah’s goal was to climb as high as she possibly could. Yeah, she’s probably an annoying suck up and likely a fairweather friend to everyone but Gayle, with whom she’s *very* good friends. But, as someone said upthread, nepo baby Rae Dawn can’t relate to the desperation one might feel as a non-nepo baby. She never needed to kiss ass to get a foot in the door, and never had to worry that missing an opportunity meant missing the only chance at success.

I think as a country we’re collectively a little bit dumber because some of the “live your best life” shit Oprah produced (no one’s best life should have room for Dr. Phil in it, seriously, what the hell) but Oprah also didn’t make us meaner. The bar for such an accomplishment is in hell, but she cleared it.

Meanwhile, I’m an elder millennial (but look like the Gerber Baby) and I can’t recall seeing Rae Dawn Chong in anything. I didn’t even know she discovered Chris Pratt (a social climber for whom I have no sympathy).

by Anonymousreply 74July 10, 2023 1:35 AM

Big O is on the Big O, she must be taking Ozempic because she is thinner now than she has been in decades.

by Anonymousreply 75July 10, 2023 1:41 AM

Who the hell has to google Rae Dawn Chong if you’re a Gen Xer or older? Beat Street, Quest For Fire, American Flyers, Soul Man, Commando, Fear City, The Color Purple, The Principle, Tales From the Darkside The Movie…she’s Tommy Chong’s daughter, for fucks sake!

by Anonymousreply 79July 10, 2023 2:04 AM

This thread is weird 😞 People are posting shit that seems nearly 100% made up to fit the narrative in their heads -not based on any facts that are easily accessible across the Internet and on YouTube. From r66:I am just guessing on the set Oprah probably buddy buddied up to her at first until she realized she was of no real use in helping her. Quincy Jones-one of the producers on TCP, saw Oprah on her talk show and insisted she be cast in the movie . I'm in agreement that Rae Dawn Chong was of no use to Oprah professionally, since Oprah was hosting her OWN talk show at the time and the famous PRODUCERS of the movie-Jones and director Spielberg- cast Winfrey personally. Chong was a bit player at best in a movie full of iconic performances and hardly anyone talks about her role in the film. Whatever negative feelings the women have towards each other -and it appears more one sided on Chong's part -runs deeper and reads more like jealousy that Oprah surpassed her despite all the obvious racial roadblocks that could have held her back.

by Anonymousreply 80July 10, 2023 2:33 AM

R80 You do realize that Oprah’s talk show didn’t start until a year after the Color Purple came out, right?

by Anonymousreply 81July 10, 2023 3:00 AM

R81, her talk show was already very well known in Chicago which is how she got the syndication deal. In one season, she toppled the previously unbeatable Donahue.

by Anonymousreply 82July 10, 2023 3:17 AM

R82 Let me try explaining this again. The Color Purple came out in 1985. Oprah’s talk show started in September 1986. It is therefore impossible for Oprah to have gotten the part in The Color Purple because of her talk show.

by Anonymousreply 83July 10, 2023 3:21 AM

Her Chicago talk show was so well known that she did several appearances like the Joan Rivers Show and even on One Life to Live. Listen, I'm on your side, and I agree that she had to go through all the auditions everyone else did but she was not some total unknown.

by Anonymousreply 84July 10, 2023 3:31 AM

R84 Are you fucking retarded? Her talk show started AFTER the Color Purple. AFTER! You illiterate jackass.

by Anonymousreply 85July 10, 2023 3:33 AM

Oprah took over AM Chicago in 1983. By 1984 She was beating Phil Donahue, also based in Chicago, in the 9:00am slot. AM Chicago has always been kind of a joke post-Steve Edwards, and she came in like a ball of fire.

She got The Color Purple role early 85 and the King World deal of turning AM Chicago into The Oprah Winfrey Show effective fall 1986. She still filmed at ABC7 studios until 90-91sh.

#superfluous

by Anonymousreply 86July 10, 2023 3:57 AM

Some of us were Chicagoans back then and watched her show before and after syndication.

by Anonymousreply 87July 10, 2023 4:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 88July 10, 2023 4:08 AM

I also remember her being Oprah Winfrey the talk show host when she was cast in the Color Purple, and I didn’t even live in Chicago. I think I knew about her from stories in the press about her beating Phil Donahue in the Nielsen ratings. She rocketed to fame in the span of a few years.

Agree. Oprah makes a show of being affable, almost obsequious, but she is actually rageful, imperious, judgmental, discontent and insanely ambitious. I admire her greatly because her superpower is allowing herself to be underestimated and then upending reality and rolling people (like Rae Dawn) when they realize they fell for it. Oprah is a billionaire who doesn't allow herself to be touched by supplicants and Rae Dawn is a (once pretty) actress begging for scraps.

Oprah and her billions wreak havoc on the psyches of the broke bitches of DL. They all share a little bit of Rae Dawn Chong's DNA -- Irish, Scottish, Chinese and Black Caribbean -- and would only like Oprah if she were their maid.

To which Oprah replies: "Who?!"

by Anonymousreply 98July 10, 2023 11:17 AM

Yes, everyone who doesn't like Oprah is a loser racist. It certainly isn't that she foisted the Drs. Oz and Phil on the public, or put herself on the cover of every issue of her magazine or has a closeted relationship with Gayle or has forced endless footage of their vacations upon a hapless public or championed Scientologists John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Tom Cruise on her show or squeezes charitable donations from her audience when she could just as soon write a check herself or feigned surprise when she interviewed her good friends and business partners Harry and Meghan or took a cut out of all that shit she peddles as "Oprah's Favorite Things" and on and on.

The woman was brilliant and entertaining once but hasn't been for years. She's bored with us and the feeling is mutual.

by Anonymousreply 99July 10, 2023 11:38 AM

Phil Donohue did a great job completely changing the talk show - bringing in politics and controversy and gays and compassion. He gave a fuck!

Oprah took that to the moon 🌚 cheers to both of them

R80 here:that's what I was trying to say r87 ,some of us oldsters believe it or not watched Oprah's show and experienced her casting as Sophia in TCP in real time- as it was happening. I'm amazed how social media has emboldened so many to just say whatever they feel like without expected to be checked by people who actually witnessed all of this when it played out. Oprah indeed had her OWN Talk show in Chicago where she was a local phenomena and seen by Quincy Jones and subsequently cast in TCP. Her show as we all know now was syndicated nationally not long after and the rest is history. I'm not a big Oprah fan but I was around and a young adult when all this went down so I know that a lot of what is being posted here is incorrect.

I was a kid but I remember Oprah was given a huge push of publicity around the time of The Color Purple and the syndication of her talk show. She was kind of the face and phenomenon pf that movie if I recall

I have the weirdest association with the syndication of the Oprah Winfrey show. I was a kid in Cleveland at the time and I was a child actor on a show called Hickory Hideout. It was a silly early Sunday / Saturday morning show syndicated in LA, Philly, Cleveland and some other random places. I did like four episodes. Actually Kathryn Hahn was on the show with me, where she got her start. Anyway, I remember being in the dark break room by myself between takes. I was a bit nervous all of the time because I was a kid in a very adult world of studio production and I always felt I was doing something wrong, about to get fired. Anyway the commercial for Oprah's upcoming show was airing constantly on a loop on the closed circuit NBC station. I think It was like a fancy black tie dinner party with a grand piano and everybody starts whispering "Oprah is coming, Oprah is coming." And I think she sweeps into the room or something. Does anyone else remember that OR am I remember it wrong? It was unique because her name was so unique. People were like, "what the fuck is a Oprah?"

Oprah gave us President Obama so she's definitely going to Heaven. She withheld decades of political capital just to unleash it on unsuspecting suburban white women in 2007. They were so dazzled and besotted, Obama was in the White House before they even realized what they'd done.

Since we're talking about the talk show wars, this is my piece. I was taking communication at UCLA and one of the guest lecturers was the current head of programming at KNBC, the LA affiliate. He was discussing how Donahue (on NBC) had totally destroyed the recent syndicated attempt "America". One thing he did for LA was to have Donahue do his shows live in LA the week "America" was to debut and it circumvented any momentum "America" might have had. Cut to the next year. Oprah began and the Programming director tried the same thing. It didn't work this time. Oprah beat him after day two. In an interview on the ABC affiliate, Oprah sagely noted that even though Phil was in LA, "he has to go home sometime". If you'll recall, Oprah began beating him so decisively that he moved his home base from Chicago to New York.

Rae Dawn??

I feel a Julia Sugarbaker rant coming on...

by Anonymousreply 108July 10, 2023 2:26 PM

Oprah is the very definition of the American dream. She came from nothing, worked hard, met the right people who helped get into the right places and turned that into something. She'll always get a pass from me. I don't care that she became the messiah of white housewives, I don't care about her spirituality crap - whatever she has, she deserves it and more.

by Anonymousreply 109July 10, 2023 2:33 PM

How did she say this shit and is still alive? Damn. I don't agree with the sentiment nor how it was expressed but you have to admire with what craft she wove sheer hate and bitterness into the takedown.

by Anonymousreply 110July 10, 2023 2:55 PM

WHEN did she say it?

She sure didn't mind Oprah when she appeared on her show circa 2008 or so for a Color Purple reunion.

by Anonymousreply 111July 10, 2023 2:57 PM

I loved her in Choose Me. It's one of my all-time-favorite movies. Check it out if you can -- I believe it's free on YouTube.

I didn't even know she was Tommy Chong's daughter! And just think, back in the day, I could recite "Big Bambu" word for word!

by Anonymousreply 112July 10, 2023 3:42 PM

Why did you feel the need to use the full word in the title? Just an excuse to use it I see. Don’t you claim to be a lawyer???

by Anonymousreply 113July 10, 2023 3:51 PM

I mostly know RDG from the 80-est of 80's action movies, Commando, with Arnold Schwazenegger....I still feel swindled that we never got to see if her character ever got a taste of Arnold's bratwurst....they sadly left it inconclusive

Also RDC defends herself here, apparently some words were made up by TMZ.

R113 I just think it’s hilarious that the media has to print “n*gger” because they are so terrified of saying the work nigger. This is the only racial slur that gets this kind of treatment. If someone makes a derogatory comment about Asians or Jews, the media never prints “ch*nk” or “k*ke.” As Howard Stern once said, the word nigger is the only word in the English language that can actually start fires.

Rae Dawn lost the role of Charlene on Diff'rent Strokes to Janet Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 117July 10, 2023 4:27 PM

She was great as the manipulative MJ in the ensemble film When The Party's Over (which featured a pre-famous Sandra Bullock).

Rae Dawn, Ola Ray, Jennifer Beals, Vanity and Irene Cara were the “it” black actresses in the ‘80s.

by Anonymousreply 121July 10, 2023 7:31 PM

r119 the fact that that was the list for the "It" black actresses in the 1980's is proof positive that the "Field Nigger / House Nigger" mentality was still very much strongly at play in deciding who gets to be up on screen and who doesn't. It is much worse for black women then. You have maybe one or two dark black men slip through to the screen. But definitely not many. You had to be lighter than a paper bag to get parts.

by Anonymousreply 122July 11, 2023 5:43 AM

Whoopi was an anomaly back then, and still is in some ways. That a dark-skinned woman with dreads could ascend to the upper echelon of Hollywood in the '80s was a marvelous feat.

R122- l once posted here that black America gets exactly ONE black actress each decade to represent the majority and was roundly panned. Yet, to date,no one has proven me wrong.I even struggled to come up with this 😭 list 😕:

1930s-Hattie McDaniel 1940s-Lena Horne 1950s Dorothy Dandridge 1960s-Diahann Carroll 1970s-Cicely Tyson 1980s-Whoopi Goldberg 1990s-Angela Bassett 2000s-Halle Berry 2011s-Viola Davis 2020s-??????????

Diana Ross made a splash in 1972 with Lady Sings The Blues and was Oscar nominated the same year as Cicely Tyson was for Sounder ,but she subsequently starred in only TWO more theatrical films -Mahogany in 1975 and The Wiz 1978.

I would argue that a comparative list could also be made for African American male stars as well-with exactly ONE representative of each decade .

by Anonymousreply 129July 11, 2023 3:49 PM

That's Ms. Ross to you, r129

I presume that Ms Chong died in a tragic freak accident shortly after she said this shit?

Not only is red tagged troll #6070 an arrogant, raging asshole, he's also a racist wannabe murderer.

Quelle surprise.

The troll boastfully posted

He’d never get roasted

But now all his posts are red-tagged!

Rae Dawn is not only alive and well, but she often posts astute and observant comments to her various social media pages about Trump and the MAGA shit show that our country has become. She just posted yesterday that she’s hitting the picket lines.

by Anonymousreply 135July 22, 2023 4:28 PM

The "n" word is repellant. Oprah is obnoxious. Both of these can be true at the same time.
