What’s up with the usage of the word fag lately? I have noticed it is frequently used, and I find it offensive. Do I need to take a sensitive pill, or do others find it offensive too?
Give it to me straight, DL’ers

For me, there's only one okay usage of the term--if it's used in the context of a submission/degradation fetish and actually helps people getting off.
My impression was that, within the community, it was mostly used by trans and genderqueer people in a bizarre mix of affirmation and alleged 'reclamation.' And they can go fuck themselves!
Then again, maybe I'm in a bubble and haven't met actual gay men yet who use it regularly.

Only a bunch of fags would complain about using fag!

R3, what's the Wicked Witch of the West doing in a pantsuit?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 6, 2023 10:00 AM |
OP, you know how bitchy fags can be.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 6, 2023 10:23 AM |
It’s all Matt Damon’s fault.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 6, 2023 11:48 AM |
Ok, you all have made me think. I feel I maybe I need to take off my drama tiara and not be so sensitive. Shame on me! I will not be triggered by the use of fag on DL.
Although, I still do not want my family and/or friends referring to me as the “family fag” or he meet my friend, John the fag. If they do you might see an episode on Dateline, “The fag who was triggered and killed.”

Then maybe stop begging for men to fuck you...and just stop acting like a faggot

I voted for "I Don’t Give A Damon" in the poll.

And here I thought it was a DL survey of current cigarette usage. So happy to see it is yet another thread about labels especially self labels. It’s been a long few days since we had one of those.
After all smoking is bad
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 24, 2024 7:49 PM |
I read on DL that fags have "puny cocklets"
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 24, 2024 7:55 PM |
I think it's fine for gays to use it about themselves like Black people use the n word.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 24, 2024 7:59 PM |
I reclaimed the word faggot& retard(retarded too)
Fuck the assholes.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 24, 2024 8:01 PM |
It doesn't bother me. Mostly because people who use it are usually trying to be 'edgy'. When I detect anyone is trying to offend/annoy, it has the opposite effect on me.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 24, 2024 8:03 PM |
I love it if it's funny.
I hate if it's not.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 24, 2024 8:09 PM |
Like Cunt, it had its moments and I’ve dropped it - even when referring to myself.
The newbie name caller we have on DL has no rhythm - every comment is forced, like a cat hacking up fur.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 24, 2024 8:47 PM |
My good friend calls me an AIDS infested faggot, but he's gay too.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 24, 2024 8:52 PM |
As with most things of this type, it's a matter of context. Someone shouting, "DIE, FAGGOT!" at me from a passing car is not cool. My good Judy saying to me, "What does that faggot over there think she's doing?" is fine.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 24, 2024 8:53 PM |
Some faggots are really faggoty and deserve to be called faggots.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 24, 2024 8:53 PM |
I love using fags in real life.

Only within the gay community.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 24, 2024 9:04 PM |
I’ve mainly seen straight women on DL use the word when they lash out if someone they perceive as gay disagrees with them.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 24, 2024 10:32 PM |
[quote] My good Judy saying to me, "What does that faggot over there think she's doing?" is fine.
What is a "good Judy"? is that like "Bad Ronald"?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 24, 2024 10:37 PM |
Is it an age thing? I’m 70 now and when I was in my 20s/30s and we grabbed back “faggot” and “dyke” and “queer” and used them among ourselves to shore up our little tiny in-group it felt powerful.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 24, 2024 10:42 PM |
But OP says nothing about the racism and misogyny at DL.
Fag.

Not offensive when used by other gay men in a non hostile way.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 24, 2024 11:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 25, 2024 1:26 AM |
Not appropriate and degrading—and I use it on occasion.

I have no idea why DL does not just publish a,list of banned words that can’t be used because they trigger people. It’s important we can protect people.
Queer, fag, Trump, retard, are all words people complain about seeing here. Words hurt.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 25, 2024 10:00 AM |
My nickname growing up was Retarded Faggot.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 25, 2024 10:23 AM |
Mostly it's just a lame attempt at a Matt Damon joke.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 25, 2024 10:28 AM |
Gays use the F word the same way blacks use the N word. Perfectly acceptable but only within that demographic.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 25, 2024 12:51 PM |
Hate it as an ugly word, quite apart from its focused contempt. It's as bad as the N-word or the Y-word. There are books, courses and exhibitions about Queer Theory and Queer Art, where F-Theory might not fly so well.
It could conceivably be reclaimed (if it hasn't been already) by say a super-sharp in-your-face drag troupe called Faggots With Attitude, who own it, sneer at prejudice, and affirm and assert gay identity all over again. Ugliness somehow thrown back.

Am i remembering correctly that in the late 60s when film completely opened up in terms of language and content..... the word fag was thrown in with some frequency...... two mainstream films that stick in my memory was
Midnight Cowboy / by dustin hoffman
owl and pussycat / by Streisand
my memory was it didn't have the kneejerk negative connotation....maybe i'm wrong. .
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 25, 2024 8:45 PM |

Oxymoron alert!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 25, 2024 10:52 PM |
[quote]my memory was it didn't have the kneejerk negative connotation....maybe i'm wrong. .
In the 1960s, it didn’t have the knee jerk reaction but it was used to put someone down, often used in reference to a straight man who couldn’t get it up.
When I was in high school in the 1970s, in gym we sometimes had to play flag football also known as fag football.
Up until the 1980s, gay men socialized with their own groups, so they hadn’t really “reclaimed” words like fag and queer.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 25, 2024 11:16 PM |
In the UK it's rarely used as a homophobic slur, but as a slang word for a cigarette. We don't really have a homophobic slur that's as serious as f*ggot.
Poof is more humorous that offensive, as is bender and queer (the latter being mostly reclaimed anyway).

“They’re just a couple of fags!”
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 26, 2024 10:37 AM |
I once saw this documentary about an all-gay crew sailing a ship with sails, and one hollered at another, " C'mon, man- don't fag-out on us!". It made me realize there is this whole other world of butch gay guys being ruff 'n rowdy.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 26, 2024 10:58 AM |
Reminds me of a sort-of controversy about 'Fairytale of New York.' One of the greatest Christmas songs ever - but it contains the line, 'You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot...' To my mind, any broadcast bleep would be foolish - only drawing more attention to the verboten word, which in context is evocative, believable.
The word was rightly uncensored when the great song was performed so touchingly at Shane MacGowan's funeral.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 26, 2024 11:12 AM |
What a joke.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 26, 2024 11:41 AM |
R62 It seems pointless for a gay person to use that phrase, though, because they're gay and aren't "fagging out", so why would they then criticise others for being lazy by using their sexuality as a basis of that insult?
I mean, it doesn't offend me (before I get accused of being a sensitive fag or similar), I just find nonsensical insults to be pointless. At least make a slur relevant if you're gonna use one.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 26, 2024 1:08 PM |
R65
I also don’t like it when people are in the middle of a very physically demanding stressful and dangerous competitive event and they don’t take more time to carefully consider the words and phrases they use to spur on a coworker who is falling behind.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 26, 2024 2:04 PM |
R66 Yeah that's true. Some people use slurs but don't really mean them to insult all gay people, it's just a word they reach for in the moment.
When I came out, several of my male friends were very apologetic about slurs/gay jokes they'd uttered around me in the past. I wasn't bothered though because I knew they weren't homophobic, they just thought they were being funny and did what they thought was expected of them.
