Actually, R34, it was a candid shot. It was taken in the South Pacific during a Japanese raid. I think this guy was swimming or something and didn't bother to put on clothes given the emergency. Men were much more comfortable being naked around each other back then.

My draft physical was much the same. We stripped to our underwear and went through the various stages. Finally, we went into a large room and lined up in two lines facing each other with about 10 ft between the lines. We were then told to drop our underwear and stand for inspection. The doctors went down the line doing the hernia check. After that, we were told to turn, bend over, and spread for the hemorrhoid check. Most medics pick those jobs. Enlistment contract. Not all certainly but most.

Some pick that mos because they want to do medical work maybe on a ship or hospital. They request that type of work.

He went in as part of the ASTP, which was similar to an officer training program, but designed for more specialized training, not leadership. They ended up discontinuing it when they ran short of cannon fodder and most of the guys ended up as infantry. It’s a very interesting story, if you are unfamiliar with it. I think Kissinger was in the program, but I think he ended up in intelligence, probably because he spoke German.

He was a difficult man, but he had his good points and I didn’t understand or appreciate how much he saw and went through before he started a family at an older age. I tried to get the records for his unit (maybe not the right term) a few years ago, but was told they were lost in a fire. I’ve looked at the after action reports.

I read two self-published (I think) books to try and learn more. One by a WWII medic and one by a gay man who was in the same unit (?or something). I don’t think my dad was gay, I just wanted to get a sense of what the overall experience was like. He didn’t talk about it, but maybe he would have if I’d known enough to ask relevant questions.

Another interesting factoid - I think his unit (?) was brought back to the US, but were told they were being sent to the Pacific. Apparently there was a lot of griping and some controversy. In the end it didn’t matter because the bombs were dropped.

I have a son in the service. I encouraged it once he showed an interest, but he’s a smart young man who makes his own choices. It’s worked out extremely week for him so far. The only thing I harped on was that once he was in, anything could happen and he’d need to accept it do what was asked of him. I think hearing about his grandfather helped him understand the commitment he was making.

R192, thank you. It's interesting that these men seem older than the recruits we usually see in WWII soldier photos. (For example, the proportion of men who are hairy-chested is noticeably higher. Not that I focus on chest hair ...) They all look to be well into their 20s, and some could be 30 or over.

Was there a higher age limit for flyers than for recruits in general? It would be logical to have a higher age requirement because (a) flyers have to be smart and cool-headed and (b) they had a much higher casualty rate; you'd want to be sure the person knew what he was getting into. Or would you? I'm not sure the Army (or Navy, as the case may be) worried a lot about that. But they definitely needed guys who could learn and stay disciplined under conditions of extreme danger without a lot of supervision.

I often wonder what it must be like to be so comfortable in your body that you can just be nude around others and not even think about it. I envy guys with that ability. I'm always so damn self-conscious.

R197, most of these guys were straight and never thought about the idea that another man might be looking at them in a sexual way when they were naked among men they knew (even slightly). They all knew about homosexuality but most had no idea how common it was and probably believed you could spot a "three-dollar bill" at 20 paces. With no sexual tension (as far as they knew), it's a lot easier to be casually naked.

In general, men were not judged by their bodies much in those days, so appearance wasn't an issue, either. Non-sexual nudity was pretty common among men in those days anyway, so they were accustomed to it.

It seemed every guy in my residence hall was naked for extended periods of time back in the 70s. We'd hang out in our rooms naked. You might have three or four friends in your room when you did it. No one ever hinted they suspected I was gay. One even sat down in his desk chair and spread his legs. Maybe he was looking for something and found me to be the most likely to give him some relief.

I grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s and didn't see a guy naked in real life til I went to a gym (with school) when I was 17. Fuck me!

Don't shoot me for bringing this up here, but R206 illustrates what many of us eldergays have been saying about locker rooms and communal showers. At a young age we were exposed (poor choice of words) to male nudity. We learned to just get on with cleaning up, changing clothes, etc. At those young ages a spontaneous, rampant erection was par for the course -you teased or got teased, but it wasn't taken seriously. Some of us would later go home and fap to some of the images we had seen, but we kept it clean in those spaces. The result is that throughout our lives we've felt okay in situations that required nudity or at least some loss of bodily privacy. (For the record, I've never thrown a rod in the showers or locker rooms. Once, at 17 or 18, I did start to get hard when I was nude in a sauna with an older straight man who was my mentor of sorts. I think he noticed, but never said anything. )

R207, and because they didn't expect other men in the locker room to be looking at them sexually, the straight guys were comfortable with it, too. That, and the fact that they weren't worried about being judged for their bodies since in those days, you pretty much had the body nature gave you, plus any muscles from athletic activities. Most guys were thin anyway, so obesity wasn't much of an issue.

I don't blame men for being modest in locker rooms now, knowing that men around them might be ogling them (which is nice if you're interested but uncomfortable if you're not) and others will be judging their pecs, etc.

Men have always ogled at other naked men, R208. They try to size themselves up against the other men. If you have a big dick, everyone will notice, and they'll make a note of it. They also look at the size of the other guys' bushes and how big their balls are. This happened since middle school for me. There was a guy who had a very full bush in sixth grade, when most of the rest of us were just starting to grow pubes. Every one of the guys in class noticed it.

Yes, that was my point, R215. That's why I said "looking at them sexually". It didn't occur to them that another guy in the communal shower was looking at them the way they would look at a naked woman.

I also think that, while men noticed other men's various attributes, there was not nearly the level of judgment about men's bodies that there is now. In fact we know this because shirtless men abound in movies and TV shows from the '60s and '70s, and most of them, even the supposedly attractive ones, wouldn't dare take their shirts off on Instagram these days.
