by Anonymousreply 3June 23, 2023 2:47 AM

r2, you know that every time you bitch and complain about "BEARKING" you assure that posters will keep on using it?

by Anonymousreply 4June 23, 2023 2:48 AM

[QUOTE] FF for the stupid bearking

We will permit it exclusively for this Titanic submarine crap, but once that’s over we can go back to FF bombing anyone who makes a thread with it, R2.

Did someone say Carey?

The OceanGate website is gone. We know it can't be maintenance because that wasn't their strong suit.

OP here. I didn’t start “BEAR KING” for the submersible thread. But I felt compelled to follow the structure from the prior threads.

Hey, we aren’t getting sucked through tiny openings in a negligently constructed tube 12000 feet below the Earth’s surface because Stockton Rush had to be a douche.

By comparison, seeing “BEAR KING” seems minor.

by Anonymousreply 9June 23, 2023 2:54 AM

The BEAR KING giveth, and the BEAR KING taketh away.

by Anonymousreply 10June 23, 2023 2:57 AM

Keri on.

by Anonymousreply 11June 23, 2023 2:58 AM

Blessed be the name of the BEAR KING, r10.

by Anonymousreply 12June 23, 2023 2:59 AM

[quote] What needs to be done is Universal or Disney should come up with a Titanic experience ride.

This would also be a good time for Disney to resurrect the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride where you’d get into Captain Nemo’s submarine and look out of the portholes.

by Anonymousreply 13June 23, 2023 3:02 AM

Bringing this archived "application" that was on Ocean Gate's website from the last thread. Looking over it really gives me the creeps - not 'that' different from an ad for a cruiseline's Alaska cruise or something like that. Egads.

R9/OP - I am the OP of the first thread and I didn't use BEARKING

Here's my proof

I specifically said prior threads - not original thread.

I am smarter than OP of part 1.

by Anonymousreply 18June 23, 2023 3:09 AM

So to be clear, the composition of the Titan 'crew' was:: American, British, French, Pakistani?

by Anonymousreply 19June 23, 2023 3:10 AM

^According to that website, they take two diving threesomes (a total of six paying customers) on each cruise from Canada to the North Atlantic. One threesome plus two crew members see the Titanic on one day, and a day or two later the second threesome goes down. How about the other threesome that’s on that ship right now? I wonder if they had already made a successful trip to the bottom and back or if they would have been up next. Yikes. Or maybe this particular time they didn’t have the second group.

by Anonymousreply 20June 23, 2023 3:11 AM

I was supposed to be on this excursion.

by Anonymousreply 21June 23, 2023 3:16 AM

How heartbreaking that the 19-year-old was apparently terrified of the trip, but didn't want to disappoint his father.

by Anonymousreply 22June 23, 2023 3:18 AM

R20 I bet they probably feel like Buddy Holly's band member who lost the coin toss to Ritchie Valens on their doomed flight with the Big Bopper.

by Anonymousreply 23June 23, 2023 3:19 AM

Lucy was supposed to go on this trip but Gary Morton talked her out of it

by Anonymousreply 24June 23, 2023 3:19 AM

^His advice finally paid off.

by Anonymousreply 25June 23, 2023 3:22 AM

Joe Manganiello would have been on board but he was too busy.

by Anonymousreply 26June 23, 2023 3:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 27June 23, 2023 3:23 AM

Ritchie Valens was another one who had a fear of flying and should have listened to his instincts.

by Anonymousreply 28June 23, 2023 3:24 AM

The light bulb finally lit up over my head (probably on all the time with everyone else!), to wit:

"It's The Mystery, Stupid." Disappearances, perhaps more than observable tragedies and disasters, enthrall us, become the stuff of movies, if not legends. Hence, the massive search efforts in this case.

MH-370. The Bermuda Triangle. Amelia Earhart. The Roanoke Colony. The Mayans. Atlantis.

And now, the Titan.

by Anonymousreply 32June 23, 2023 5:04 AM

It:

● Doesn't roll off the tongue

● Is Tardfucked

by Anonymousreply 45June 23, 2023 11:15 AM

I just hope in that micro second they had before they imploded the father apologised to his son for forcing him on the trip, and that the son said ‘I love you dad’. Then at least they would have been at peace together before the nasty mess.

I was thinking that the families might take a nice boat out to the spot above the crash and throw flowers into the water whilst saying prayers. Maybe if she is well enough Celina Dion could join them and sing a gentle acapella version of My Heart Will Go On. It would be a nice tasteful send off, and also closure for those of us who have been following this tragic trip.

I don't think they have any idea how long it took this thing to implode or whether they knew it was happening or not. One expert said the window might have been compromised and started cracking before the main event. We will never know if they suffered or not, realizing that the thing was about to implode.

by Anonymousreply 98June 23, 2023 6:14 PM

I believe the sub HAD to have made a low, groaning sound, even if they only got to hear it for a fraction of a moment. But it may have been so fast that their brain heard that groan and didn’t even have time to compute what it meant for them.

R108, r103 means "the stupid word" "Bearking," not the common "canon." He means the poster is trying to make "Bearking" part of the DL lexicon, like "cak" and "graxy."

R107, It is quite true. The explosion was the separation of the parts, with the astronaut capsule's falling intact until.....

by Anonymousreply 111June 23, 2023 9:33 PM

Yes r107, it really really really is true. Do NOT read that.

by Anonymousreply 112June 23, 2023 9:38 PM

Cak was instantly accepted.

The arguments over graxy were endless.

by Anonymousreply 113June 23, 2023 9:41 PM

The difference between cak and graxy, as well as WHET, is that those three terms started as typos that were eventually adopted as part of DL's lingo. "Bearking" is nothing but a contrivance that someone thought was funny and should be used all the time in place of "breaking."

by Anonymousreply 114June 23, 2023 9:52 PM

[quote]I don't think they have any idea how long it took this thing to implode or whether they knew it was happening or not.

Reading between the lines, it seems like they had more than an inkling they were in trouble because, by many accounts, they had shed their ballast in an attempt to quickly return to the surface. Instead, the vessel plummeted straight to the ocean floor - and very much faster than its normal rate of descent. To me, that sounds like the final plunge was AFTER the vessel had imploded. The submersible broke up and sank like a stone (as useless tons of debris will).

by Anonymousreply 118June 23, 2023 11:32 PM

This is the OceanGate three hour tour of threads.

by Anonymousreply 119June 24, 2023 12:09 AM

Given the water pressure at that depth, I never understood how unopened bottles of wine from the Titanic, still with their corks and their contents intact, managed to stay intact on the ocean floor for many decades after the sinking. I saw some of them at a Titanic artifacts exhibition.

by Anonymousreply 124June 24, 2023 1:43 AM

[quote]OMG, I looked up a better article on Challenger — I cannot unread what I read. Do NOT look it up if your brain is obsessive because you will be filled with morbid thoughts for possibly many months. Eerie and absolutely one of the more disturbing things I’ve read, and I’ve studied serial killers.

I'm not sure about the recordings - most of the crew would have lost consciousness almost immediately based on where they were seated at the time - but at least one person was still alive as it plummeted towards the ocean because some of the switches for emergency oxygen had been manually switched on.

by Anonymousreply 125June 24, 2023 1:45 AM

Here is one link from my r110 post — I only linked to this site because they’d formatting made it easier to read. Just just Google “challenger explosion transcript” and it looks like multiple sites have it.

Maybe I’m just too shook up from the sub story, if you read it and think I was just being a sissy, I welcome your feedback. I was in 7th grade when it happened, watching the take off when it exploded, so maybe it’s also hitting me because I lived through it?

Another reason I think it’s terrible is because the transcript doesn’t match the official story at all (there was indeed a cover-up). Americans were told that they died instantly. Americans were also told that there was no recording of them on the black box, and while technically true, the cover up is that the female astronaut has a recorder on her body, so that recorder picked up all the audio that occurred after the explosion, so they weren’t technically “lying” but they did fail to tell the public because the recording is fucking awful. But the truth is that they were conscious the entire time as their capsule was hurtling through the air — the capsule was full intact, all of the astronauts were alive.

So because the capsule remained intact and there wasn’t any change in their air pressure, they were wide awake. They were all screaming, cursing, begging for their lives, praying the Our Father, saying goodbye to family, telling each other they loved each other, all as they watch the ocean come closer and closer as they dropped. It sounds like they were alive for a full three minutes, they were totally awake and absolutely knew they were about to die, and there was nothing they could do. So I guess imagine if someone put you on a butchers table and they are running the saw, and you know they’re about to cut you in half, but there is no escape. That’s how terrible it is, that was the horror and agonizing suffering. And NASA covered up that part to protect the org and their funding.

by Anonymousreply 126June 24, 2023 1:55 AM

R125, Why do you think any of the Challenger lost consciousness? There is no evidence of that. I did read years ago that Judith Resnick had been holding hands with another astronaut during....

by Anonymousreply 127June 24, 2023 1:57 AM

I seem to remember reading that the pilot was trying to control the capsule as it was falling.

by Anonymousreply 128June 24, 2023 1:59 AM

R125, I believe you are mistaken, read the transcript and you’ll understand what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 129June 24, 2023 2:01 AM

R127, if the transcripts are true, they were indeed holding hands.

by Anonymousreply 130June 24, 2023 2:03 AM

That transcript is fake! WTF…can’t any of you read? The Snopes piece tells what did NOT happen, including the fake words. My god.

by Anonymousreply 131June 24, 2023 2:12 AM

R126, Doesn't (your link to) Snopes debunk that purported transcript?

Now I don't know what to believe.

As for the Titan: I don't think any of the passengers detected anything wrong with the hull, for I believe "anything wrong" would last a nano-second before total hull and human destruction.

Think Hiroshima Ground Zero. Photo #10.

I’ve studied the Challenger explosion and it’s pretty clear that they were alive til they hit the ground. Nothing was said about it back in the 80s but recent books and articles have made their initial survival very clear. Wouldn’t surprise me if this transcript is legit.

I did say “if true”. We cannot verify if these transcripts are true.

It seems pretty convenient they could calmly get most of the lord's prayer out like that.

Not even the Our Father…but the 23rd psalm! I heard they found a last will & testament written out in longhand while they cruised down to the Atlantic.

[quote]Why do you think any of the Challenger lost consciousness?

Because of the TUC and the fact that they were in flight suits at the time.

by Anonymousreply 139June 24, 2023 2:44 AM

But r139, our government did confirm that switches were touch after the explosion, so at least one crew member was conscious…..which means they all were potentially awake.

by Anonymousreply 140June 24, 2023 2:47 AM

There's a big difference between having a few seconds to switch on the manual oxygen and sitting there having a conversation and reciting the lords prayer.

I've been thinking about the wreck a lot lately. Those 1,500 people all became whale fall. Imagine what the wreck looked like a day, a week, a month after the sinking. All those bodies strewn about, still intact, and then slowly being eaten away. Little ecosystems everywhere. It's kind of morbidly fascinating.

by Anonymousreply 145June 24, 2023 3:49 AM

R145 It was like the Great Famine ended and potatoes rained from the sky.

by Anonymousreply 146June 24, 2023 3:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 147June 24, 2023 3:55 AM

The only thing I find really creepy about the Titanic wreck was all the pairs of shoes which used to have feet in them.

by Anonymousreply 148June 24, 2023 3:59 AM

So I watched "Ghosts of the Abyss" last night, about James Cameron's 2001 dives to the Titannic wreck. Bill Pullman was our "entry character" with Cameron himself getting less screentime, but Cameron was actually piloting one of the ROVs through the wreck itself, and it was weird how he knew every damn room! "Oh," he would say, "Here's the captain's quarters", or "This is stateroom #1, and the passenger was......... and what happened to him during the wreck was...."., etc. Every room looked algae-plagued and identical, but Cameron knew exactly where the ROV was and what it would see next It appears that Cameron is a genuine expert on the Titanic wreck, after 33 dives down there.

Which gave me an idea for the inevitable ripoff movie about the Titan! Okay, a tourist submarine vanishes at a deep-sea wreck, and it turns out that the world's greatest expert on the wreck is a Hollywood actor (or director or producer) who's enough of a geek to have dived the wreck 100 times and who knows ever nook and cranny. Of course a good chunk of the movie is played for laughs, as this egotistical geeky director has to deal with real life for once, but then shit gets real and this spoiled jerk has to actually save lives, at the risk of his own...

by Anonymousreply 149June 24, 2023 4:31 AM

I don't see where the movie comes in, r149. I mean, wouldn't it start right where your post ends? And why, exactly, would this "spoiled jerk" (how is "egotistical" a synonym for "spoiled," again?) "[have] to actually" do anything at all, never mind "save lives"?

Also, a central element of hideous deaths isn't usually "played for laughs."

by Anonymousreply 150June 24, 2023 4:48 AM

I wondered if Piers Morgan will be all over it. I don’t watch much TV and caught a lot of CNN when I was travelling in South American for 2 months after the MH370 from Malaysian airlines. Every night Morgan and Richard Quest would obsess over the trickle of data available like it was Hitler’s diary. My parents back home said the the local news stopped discussing the disappearance weeks ago, I thought it was still a huge story because these two bozos were obsessed.

I went to Twitter and the only way Piers Morgan could be write more about the Titanic submarine would be if Meghan Markle paid for the passage of the father and his teenage son.

R125- Thanks for the link. I have always heard that there is a tape, but it has not and will never be revealed to the public out of respect and decency for the family members. The Challenger catastrophe blackened the reputation and trust of space shuttle program and many believe it eventually caused the downfall of NASA. They would never allow such a recording to be heard by the public.

R164, I'm not the poster you were addressing, but Snopes debunked it in the link at R126. Even if that were not the case, the transcript doesn't ring true at all. Astronauts are very aware of the risks they take with every mission and make their wills and other such arrangements beforehand, and moreover, some of them were former air force pilots. They would undoubtedly be panicked, but also focused on trying to do everything possible to stay alive. Audio of pilots' responses to catastrophic incidents is probably more true to what was happening, and is distressing enough without any over the top drama.

Amelia Earhart is fine! She sends her love!

by Anonymousreply 172June 24, 2023 9:39 PM

If it was published in a tabloid the first time it leaked then it's the work of a good writer.

I went down a rabbit hole and read transcripts from a lot of black box recordings. Usually the pilots are too freaked out in the moment to have a coherent dialogue. Way more swearing.

by Anonymousreply 173June 25, 2023 1:36 AM

OMG, r169! Claustrophobia City! Like sardines in a tin can, packed with no way to escape! An 8-12 hour drop into utter blackness, waiting to crush the life out of all interlopers.

Frankenstein's Monster bolts for the hatch. Crushable fiberglass for the hull. Game-Boy controls. Lone porthole certified for less than Titanic's depth of 13,000 feet. And the ignominy of a lunchbox-sized "commode."

I saw an episode of "Air Disasters" wherein a repair on a large passenger plane had been done inadequately. But it held, and it held again; for more than a few takeoffs, flights at altitude, and landings---the repair held.

Until it didn't.

The young man in the video got lucky with the weather for his appointed dive, when Neptune looked at him and said, "Not today, Jake; not today."

And now he knows exactly how lucky he was.

by Anonymousreply 174June 25, 2023 2:34 AM

That video at R169 is just terrifying. It looks about as safe as sitting cross-legged in the bed of a pick-up truck. Even if this implosion hadn’t happened and I was watching that video for some reason, I would still never want to get in that thing in a million years, not even for free. And I’m not claustrophobic or afraid of boats or anything. I just think it looks awful.

I hope we hear from the crew of the Polar Prince now that they’re ashore…..very curious about what went on on the ship…. Also want to know more about Wendy Rush and how big a role she played in Ocean Gate and whether she was aware of the serious safety issues.

And finally I did some online digging and found out that Stockton’s daughter Quincy is getting married in early September…..the wedding website was still online as of yesterday….

by Anonymousreply 184June 25, 2023 5:06 PM

Wendy Rush is ironically the great-great granddaughter of the Strausses, Isodor and his wife - who died on the Titantic together. He was a founder of Macy's department stores. She is descended from one of their daughters, per the Fail this past week. I wonder if her family ties fed into Stockton's obsession.

R190 Wasn't all this on the Internet already? These people looked at the plastic game controller and said yes. Even if Stockton never disclosed anything it was obviously an amateur operation. He bragged about doing it on the cheap. It's best not to start economizing at the bottom of the ocean.

Jesus Christ—you can’t realize how fake that is? As noted over and over again, their messaging system was quite limited. Only short words and a letter code were used because of the great difficulty in transmitting through a depth of water. This wasn’t a space shuttle for chrissake.

This is the real Challenger transcript. The one NASA doesn't want you to read.

Real Transcript, not fake at all:

F: omg!

M: it appears this is not good.

F: indeed. Indeedy, deedy doo.

M: hey, look there's the water! Maybe we can water land!

M: Swell idea! Damn those bastards at NASA I-

F: wait are we going to die? No! No the humanity! Nooo!

M: Oh dear! Well let's tell our families we love them!

M: put your life preserver on!

F/M: start singing a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria.

M: well folks, it's been a privilege flying with you. I shall see you in the great beyond.

F: I see my angel! Oh the light it's so beautiful. Such peace! I don't want to go back to Earth!

M: Are you God? Yes, all the answers of ife. Silly how could I have forgotten. -laughter-

M: For God sakes people hold yourself together! This is no time for hallucinations! We've still got a minute to think

F: well it's simply too bad you know? This is not what I imagined would happen.

M: who cares! Heaven is real! Yippee! Is thing going to crash soon?

F: Captain I think we've hit a time warp of some kind

M: the Bermuda Triangle?

M: Damn!

F: oh no! What happens now?

M: the alien says he's not Got. He's invited us to a portal to another universe.

F: really? How exciting!

M: all we have to do is fly through the water where we're about to land.

M: fascinating! Well we have some time who's up for a game of Jenga?

F: nah let's have a pi recitation competition!

M: 3.14159-

Voice: welcome to alien world! Have a nice stay!

M: wow!

End of recording

Right after minute 2, the 19 year old's mother said he had "wanted to do that for a very long time" (go deep and solve the Rubick's cube) -- so, why was she the one who was originally scheduled to go and she gave him her seat? As rich as they were, if the boy really desperately wanted to do this, why would they not have scheduled him to go in the first place? (and all three of them if she wanted to go, as well)

It doesn't make sense to me. Makes me think she doesn't want her husband's legacy to be that he pressured or talked his son into going.
