I don't hate wealthy people.
I noticed a long time ago that humans invented methods of measuring "value", be it currency, physical beauty, etc. and whoever controls a surfeit of it enjoys privileges that other humans don't.
We tolerate that.
When it comes to Earths elements, however, I do wonder about this inexplicable defiance, by some, of common sense.
Earth's physical materials have existed for BILLIONS of years. Humans have been around for a nano-second of that.
Yet, among us are humans who look at an ocean, a mountain, or a planet and convince themselves "I physically belong there".
Well, have at it, but I won't buy that lofty nonsense along the lines of, "But this is human exploration and research at its apex. It's worthy."
Bullshit. This is human stupidity.
And Earth is saying, " Fuck off. I ain't your personal amusement park."

The "won't somebody think of the drowned migrants" whingeing is missing the point. People aren't invested in this story because these guys are rich; people are invested because of the Titanic. I agree, r33, but other stories, like the Sago Mine disaster, certainly held the media's attention (at least in the US), as did the 2010 Copiapó mining accident. Miners aren't exactly the fat of the land. To me, the draw of this story has nothing to do with the fact they're billionaires -- that doesn't make it interesting to me. It's the (dwindling) possibility that they still might be rescued.

r36 I don't know if it makes you feel better or worse, but there are roughly 3 million shipwrecks - that we know of - in the parts of the Oceans that have been either documented or discovered. That doesn't even count all the fishermen etc who died off the various coasts of the world who went basically forgotten, or all the galley slaves who were abandoned, chained to the oars, on sinking ships. On and on.
A significant chunk of the floors of the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, etc are all littered with bodies. And these are just the ones in the West. In that sense the Titanic site is less of an anomaly than first appears.

I'm getting thoroughly annoyed with the twitter idiots demanding that the search be called off and demanding more be done to rescue the migrants off the coast of Greece.
First of all, the submersible rescue mission is off the coast of North America and Canadian and American resources are being used. We are not taking resources from Greece to search for the sub. In fact, the efforts being made are taking NOTHING from the region where the migrant tragedy occurred. If you're displeased with the rescue efforts in Greece, then complain to the UN and to the Greek government. These are two separate incidents.
Secondly, for those claiming it's a waste of taxpayer dollars, no it fucking isn't. Even if the vessel isn't recovered, this experience provides invaluable training for BOTH American and Canadian search and rescue teams. We are literally paying these people as whether they're out trying to rescue this sub or not!! Also, victims of "misadventure" or whatever it's called are often provided with a bill for search and rescue efforts - ask any mountaineers or extreme skiers who've been rescued about that.
Thirdly, people are rescued ALL the time. What about idiots who refuse to evacuate from natural disaster zones until it's too late. It's pretty rare that these people are just left to die. Others take other risks - swim in the ocean and get swept out by tides, participate in extreme sports, hike in dangerous areas etc....and we still attempt to rescue them. We may think they're idiots, but we still try to rescue them.
Finally, if you're so concerned about the plight of the migrants in Greece, then by all means, donate to a charity that endeavors to help them. But no, none of the twitter loudmouths will do that, they'd rather bitch and moan about shit they don't understand from their phones they can't live without that they bought from companies run by evil billionaires.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 21, 2023 2:53 PM |
You can't help but notice the irony of the situation but that anyone would delight in the passengers' agony is beyond me. Doesn't matter if it was Charles Manson down there. Whatever it is that fosters human empathy is broken today. I too find it hard to believe there isn't CCTV from the interior of the vessel, but I'm grateful there isn't.

The French ship Atalante, carrying a robot that can dive to 20,000ft (6,000 metres) underwater, is expected to arrive late today to join the search operation for the missing sub.
The unmanned robot, called Victor 6000, can dive deeper than other equipment now at the site in the North Atlantic and has arms that can be remotely controlled to cut cables or perform other manoeuvres to release a stuck vessel, Reuters reported, citing the robotās operator, Ifremer.
Victor āis not capable of lifting the submarine on its ownā but it can help hook the Titan sub to a ship with the capacity to lift it to the surface, Ifremerās head of naval operations, Olivier Lefort, said.
Victor is able to do visual exploration with all the video equipment it has. It is also equipped with manipulating arms which could be used to extricate the sub, such as by sectioning cables or things that would be blocking it at the bottom.
He said the 25-strong crew required to operate the robot ācan work non-stop for up to 72 hoursā once it reaches the site. He added:
[quote] We donāt know what happened. The noises that were heard give us hope the submarine is on the seabed and that people are still alive, but other scenarios are possible. Even if hope is slim, weāll go all the way.

BBC claims the banging sounds were heard to be in the vicinity of the Titanic. The fact the sounds are intermittent leads experts to believe the source is human. Rescue operations are stepped up today because there isn't much time left before oxygen runs out.
Now I'm hoping for a live rescue. It would be beyond exciting to see the lost crew and tourists walk out of this alive. Would love to hear their stories.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 21, 2023 3:12 PM |
R79 what difference does it make? The best hope now is to locate it, different drones and robots are on the way and soon will arrive to search the floor. But to to rescue them is very unlikely, it would take days or even weeks to maneuver the cables, how to attach it and pull the submarine up, it has never been done before. There were previous missions to salvage some wreckage, but not a whoe submarine, as an expert said yesterday, currently no one has the clue on how to do it.

An American couple have made history by getting married on the wreck of the Titanic, inside a submersible on the ship's deck.
New Yorkers David Leibowitz and Kimberley Miller descended to the wreck - four kilometres (2.4 miles) under the North Atlantic - in one of the submersibles used in the Hollywood movie Titanic.
They have rejected allegations that their wedding is in bad taste - an "insult" to the 1,523 people who died when the ship sank in 1912.
Captain Ron Warwick, Captain of the cruise liner, QE2, performed the extraordinary ceremony from the operations room of the Russian research ship, Akademik Keldysh.
Visits to the Titanic cost $36,000 per person - money that the Russian Academy of Sciences says it needs to fund its research projects.

I still suspect it imploded but hope Iām wrong. Best case scenario is, the searchers find it, itās tangled, the rescue sub is able to untangle them, it has time to ascend.

To 2 posters from Thread 2:
1.) As for "pearl-clutchers," my main point has consistently been the futility of attempted rescue, as is so far proving accurate. But I will add the insanity of boarding the Titan, even given its prior successful dives. It was, as has been proven, simply a matter of time, usually the case where safety isn't top priority.
2.) As for Morse code for SOS, yes, we know. But you unwittingly underscore why the "banging" noises aren't from the trapped.

They just announced the sub has about 20 hours of oxygen left. In fact letās assume less. Thereās probably shouting, crying, heavy breathing, due to extreme stress. (Assuming hull still has integrity of course.)
The French sent some sort of rescue sub thatās supposed to be there tonight. If they find it, if the rescue sub can immediately extricate it, and if it can ascend, they could be saved. All those things have to happen pretty much RIGHT NOW.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | June 21, 2023 4:05 PM |
Something I've not seen mentioned, but just having enough O2 may not be the issue. A major problem with unventilated spaces like subs and space capsules is that carbon dioxide builds up very quickly, and becomes toxic. If they have power, they would be pumping the air through CO2 scrubbers, but if not, the CO2 could kill them much sooner than lack of O2. To compound the problem, CO2 is heavier than other gases like O2 and Nitrogen, so it accumulates in a layer on the floor. And guess where these people are? If they lie down to sleep, they could easily suffocate.

I guess the difference between me and these guys - if Iām to be accused of being lighthearted - is the fact that I didnāt pay to have my life end this way. You couldnāt pay me $250g to go down in one of those things, because I know thereās a likelihood it could become my coffin. Does it give me or others the right to be cruel or insensitive? Maybe not - they still have friends and family who love and will miss them. . But it does give a bit of leeway to make light of the incredible stupidity of it all, plus to be a little upset about the fact that taxpayers are on the hook for trying to find their sorry asses. I hope the least that comes out of this is stricter regulations around these types of vessels and excursions.

The incredibly irritating thing about the wokesters is how they try to turn anything thatās caught the worlds imagination (as this has) into a lecture moment.
What weāre hearing now is, āoh everyone cares so much about billionaires on a lark, but 500 drowning poor people on an urgent exodus are ignored or blamed. DO BETTER.ā
They donāt seem to care how insufferable this makes them, and how itās likely to backfire and hurt rather than help the cause they pretend to care about.
We accuse the Right of gaslighting but wokesters do it like a champ too:
Why assume we donāt care about the 500 just because we care about the 5? False opposition.
The 500 were already dead when it became news. What are we supposed to be doing for them exactly? Hoping they reanimate?
While I understand they are fleeing poverty, and possibly even starvation and war, they are still invading another country ā which is illegal as theyāre not gaining entry as the host countries require. (Yes, yes, I KNOW those countries make it too hard.) The 5 were not invading anything.
Itās just example number twelve million of how these poseur progressives are a fucking boat anchor around our necks and a gift to the rightwing. And the worst part is, they donāt really give a fuck about the migrants. The migrants are just a mcguffin that allows them to show how piously virtuous they are ā how much more caring they are than YOU are.

Kind of maudlin.. If the vessel is recovered (doubtful) There is small chance that these guys texted their thoughts, and maybe somehow those could be recovered? (Like after you take your phone off airplance mode) I am fucking reaching probably.
However, I DID KNOW that you cannot just "break out of a sub" like the dodo bird above!
by Anonymous | reply 107 | June 21, 2023 4:24 PM |
No r104, the hope is that the little sub is stuck on something on the bottom. If the French rescue vehicle has those little arms in front, they MAY be able to untangle the trapped sub. The French sub is way too small to swallow anything up. Itās actually about the same size as the missing sub.
As I said a few times, I think a successful rescue is very unlikely. Sadly.

First off, no one is coming out of this alive.
Secondly, the only thing this sad incident illustrates is that Millionaires and billionaires in this world arenāt taxed nearly enough. That people can just piss away $250,000 on a jaunt to the Titanic just shows how fucked up this world is becoming.
Sad that thereās a 19 year old among them, but I feeling very little sympathy.

by Anonymous | reply 117 | June 21, 2023 4:48 PM |
Maybe not to this extreme, but I think we've all done reckless things just for the thrill of it. There are several people I love, very good people, who put their lives at risk recreationally because it's fun. Past a certain point, you learn to assume you'll get out of it alive because you always have. If bad things have never happened to you, it's easy to believe they never will.
What's the litmus test for deciding what the threshold is for deserved sympathy? If someone gets shot in Times Square, do they deserve it because they knew the risks of living in New York? Humor is needed in situations like this but celebrating the ghoulish deaths of a bunch of strangers makes us a part of the problem.

Amazon reviews for the controller:
"The connection between the dongle and the controller is sketch and requires a clear path. Even when using the included extender for the dongle I have been unable to get a secure connection."
"The controller constantly lose connection with the dongle so you'll be dying a lot in your game. Logitech used to make really good controllers but now they're just total trash. The only reason to buy this is to remind you how much better your wired controller is. The controller is bulk and has an extra vibration button that doesn't do anything other than vibrate when you push it by accident looking for the Start button."
"This controller looks and feels great. And that's where the good points end. It drops connection constantly, causing all kinds of annoying accidents and deaths in games. It also won't reconnect when you press a button on the controller half the time, forcing you to unplug and replug the USB dongle to connect. I hate this controlled and wish I'd returned it on day 1."
"Gamepad just stops receiving input periodically, and the 'mode' LED on the top starts blinking. This can be brief, but disastrous while gaming. Unusable as-is. Tried placing receiver right next to gamepad using the included wired extension for the receiver (probably a bad sign in and of itself), tried new and different batteries, checked that Win10 is using latest wireless driver. Same results. Returning."
"The analog sticks fail quickly. I've replaced this controller a few times, for the price, I'd expect to get more than 6 months of infrequent use out of it. The range on the wireless connection is terrible, too."
"Keeps disconnecting less than 2ft away."

Paul Henry, the presumed pilot, wrote a book about his many dives down to the Titanic. It hasn't been translated from French to English yet...
Nargeolet, 73, is a pre-eminent diver and considered to be the worldās leading expert on the Titanic wreckage and its debris field, which covers 25 square nautical miles. He is director of underwater research for Experiential Media Group, or E/M Group, and RMS Titanic Inc., and has completed dozens of submersible dives to the wreckage site, spending more time there than any other explorer. Known as āMr. Titanic,ā he is thought to be the one piloting the Titan.
Nargeolet was born in Chamonix, France, and lived with his family in Africa for 13 years, completed his studies in Paris and then spent 22 years in the French Navy, rising to the rank of commander, according to his biography on the E/M Groupās website. He led the first crewed expedition to the Titanic in 1987, just two years after it was discovered by an autonomous submersible, and was the first to recover a remnant ā a silver plate.
In 2019 he participated in the Five Deeps expedition, exploring the deepest parts of all five of the Earthās oceans, and breaking the record for deepest submersible dive, at 10,928 metres.
In an interview with the Irish Examiner that year, Nargeolet was asked whether he ever got scared diving 3,810 metres to reach the wreck. He replied: āIf you are 11 metres or 11 km down, if something bad happens, the result is the same. When youāre in very deep water, youāre dead before you realize that something is happening, so itās just not a problem.ā
Last year he published a book, In the Depths of the Titanic. The Daily Telegraph reports that he admitted at the time to sometimes pushing the envelope when diving to the wreck.
āYou stand down four, five, six, seven eight hours, which is the longest, and even then you donāt really want to come back up,ā he said. āSometimes I go to the end of the (sub) batteries and sometimes even more than to the end. Indeed, Iāve been told off for doing so several times. Then the resurfacing takes just as long, so one can be down between 10 to 12 hours.ā
by Anonymous | reply 189 | June 21, 2023 7:04 PM |
If it did somehow become tangled with the wreck and the rescue vehicle has to cut away part of it to extricate them, well imagine the outcry.
I guess I donāt get the fascination, not enough to risk your life. Itās only been down there a little over 100 years. Itās not ancient Grecian or Roman. I understand the quest to *find* it but once it was found and surveyed, after that, eh. We know what happened, how it happened. Thereās no mystery I donāt think. In a few decades it will have completely disintegrated.

A German adventurer who explored the Titanic wreckage on the same submersible that disappeared has labeled the voyage a āsuicide mission.ā
āI was incredibly lucky back then,ā Arthur Loibl, 60, told German outlet Bild of his hair-raising aquatic adventure.
He undertook the perilous underwater odyssey in August 2021, diving down over 12,000 meters to the famous wreck in the now infamous Titan submersible.
Also along for the descent, which cost Loibl nearly $110,000, were French Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet, 73 and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, CEO and founder of the submarine company OceanGate.
They and three other passengers are currently trapped aboard the missing vessel, which is possibly located as deep as 12,500 feet down off the coast of Canada.
āIt was a suicide mission back then!ā exclaimed the Bavarian entrepreneur, recalling his own journey into the abyss. āThe first submarine didnāt work, then a dive at 1,600 meters had to be abandoned.ā
Loibl explained that they ended up launching five hours late due to electrical issues ā which he suspects is to blame for the Titan crewsā current predicament.
Not only that but right before the voyage, the bracket of the stabilization tube ā which balances the sub ā tore and had to be āreattached with zip ties,ā he said.
Unfortunately, the cramped conditions on board the Titan werenāt exactly reassuring.
āYou need strong nerves, you mustnāt be claustrophobic and you have to be able to sit cross-legged for ten hours,ā described the aquanaut, who has circumvented Titanicās remains twice in Titan.
During one of the dives, he even touched down aboard the ill-fated cruise liner.
However, out of all the daredevilās adventures ā flying over Russia in a MiG-29 fighter plane and visiting both the North and South Poles ā Loibl says the Titan expeditions were āthe most extreme.ā
As such, he is praying for the safe return of all parties aboard the sunken sub. āIt must be hell down there. Thereās only 2.50 meters of space, itās four degrees, thereās no chair, no toilet,ā Loibl described.
The sub ā which is carrying British billionaire Hamish Harding and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son along with the aforementioned two passengers ā has been missing since Sunday and has fewer than 41 hours of breathable oxygen left, the US Coast Guard reported Tuesday.

Titanic survivor Edith Russell was quite the dame: "I'm accident-prone," she said. "I've been in shipwrecks, car crashes, fires, floods and tornadoes. I've had every disaster but bubonic plague and a husband."
She says that the people in the lifeboats worried that the suction of the sinking Titanic would suck them down with it. Why did that not happen?

I read that there is a very likely chance they are already dead because you don't need to be in a zero oxygen environment to die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Also, they aren't down far enough to be mushed to pieces if there was a breech - their lungs would collapse from the pressure though and they'd die nearly instantly.
Pretty sure they're dead by now.

R203 I think James Cameron's movie has everything to do with the fascination with Titanic in the past 25 years.
That movie was a phenomenon when it came out and it continues to be beloved to this day.
I think if the film had never been made, there wouldn't be this much fascination with Titanic nor the site.

Reminds me of the movie INTO THE WILD about that college graduate who went to live in the Alaskan wilderness and died of starvation.
Sean Penn directed and starred Emile Hirsch.
Anyway, that film has become a cult hit and has inspired people from around the world to make the treacherous trek to visit the abandoned bus he lived and died in.

R203 The Titanic was full of wealthy people who took their treasure and jewellery on board. These people who visit the wreckage go diving once they are down there looking for the treasures that they believe are still hidden in the cabins and amongst the corpses.
They don't publicise this of course, but that is how it works.

by Anonymous | reply 214 | June 21, 2023 8:07 PM |
R190, I think people want to visit the Titanic because it's viewed as an almost mythical ship. There's so much symbolism attached to its memory - the hubris of believing man can triumph over nature, social inequality as its most blatant (two thirds of first-class passengers surviving vs. a quarter of third-class), all that decadence ending up at the bottom of the Atlantic - that it seems almost as legendary as the Flying Dutchman. And the fact that it's so inaccessible probably makes it even more tantalising. I would never in a million years have got in that sub, but if you're a thrill-seeker with far more money than sense, I can see the appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 215 | June 21, 2023 8:10 PM |
Is there cottage anywhere of previous voyages? Or clips of passengers entering the pseudo-submarine? Our local news showed old clips of the inside of the sub and it didnāt look like there were seats. Also, no windows, just small computer screens where the passengers would see what the camera was picking up. Also, the sub was controlled by a knock off PS3 controller.
I donāt get why anyone would choose this experience. Itās not much of an experience at all.

She had not been two hours from shore When view of a ghostly shipwreck bore The captain called all hands and swore He'd take that sub in tow
When the sub had barely hit the water A wreckage piece stuck out and caught her The lights went out the gamepad fought her When she dove down low
For forty hours and maybe more The line went slack then tight once more All signals lost there were only four But still that search did go
Soon may the Coast Guard come To bring us Oxygen, TP, and rum One day when our tour is done We'll take our leave and go

The year after the movie came out, we had people coming in looking for Titanic paraphernalia.
Unfortunately, the movie released no merchandise other than two soundtrack CDs, "Making of..." book, replica of diamond necklace, and posters -- neither which we carried.
However, some other company that was making 3D puzzles (remember those?) released a Titanic version and that sold like hot cakes.
At the time as a teenager, I wondered why James Cameron didn't release a slew of Titanic-related merchandise, but I guess it would have been in bad taste.

by Anonymous | reply 298 | June 21, 2023 10:38 PM |
Seventeen bolts seal the only hatch. With two people working on removing the bolts with removers, it would still take multiple precious minutes. It's entirely conceivable that even if they find them, even if they can bring them up, even if they can get divers with bolt removing equiptment to the vessel asap, the passengers will still die while they're trying to remove the bolts. Every step will take much longer than in other maritime situations, even the very, very last one.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | June 21, 2023 10:40 PM |
R296 there is one. But think about how much pressure itās under. It has millions of tons of water pressing down on it. So extraordinary methods have to be used to keep the subās hull integrity.

As long as they're like eh you'll just pass out when the oxygen is lost. Or even rapid depressurization would be preferred to a plane crash where some survive.

So some takeaways for the next outfit that wants to try something like this:
- 4 weeks of oxygen reserves. - backup systems in place. - back up comms in place. - virtually indestructible communication device. - locator/black box. - must pass board safety regulations below certain feet. -must have insurance give the approval -must have contingency winch tow ship operation in place. - must have been accompanied by independent escort drones in case communication is lost.

Wendy Rush, the OceanGate communications director and wife of the companyās missing CEO Stockton Rush, is the great-great-grandchild of Titanic victims Isidor and Ida Straus, according to The New York Times.
Isidor Straus refused to take a seat on a lifeboat when women and children were still waiting to get off the sinking ship, and he was joined by his wife Ida, who would not leave his side.
The two were seen standing arm-in-arm on the deck of the liner when it went down

And he was very close advisor to President Grover Cleveland and served in the House of Representatives -- two full terms!

My maternal great grandparents also perished together on the Titanic's maiden voyage. We remember them in our Pesach prayers every single year. The first time I went to the Titanic on a submersible I saw their skeletons embracing still at the very bottom of the ocean. The second time I dove, I was able to lay a wreath of water lilies at their feet. L'Chaim!

I just Googled the Mary Celeste to see if they ever found the wreck. They never did, although there was a false alarm in 2001. I wonder if it's still out there somewhere. It was wrecked 27 years before the Titanic sank, and people say the latter will disintegrate within a few decades, so maybe the Mary Celeste is already gone.

Nevertheless, again, the person who recorded it would have to be awfully busy in the search for the submersible and why would they have time to do this. Anyway, here is a thought on it, and after it comes the press conference (just so you don't have to wonder what happens next type of thing) but the banging itself IS real.
Yes, I pray for these guys. R408 is right. The authorities are in touch with these peoples families who are desperate. Is it so hard to have compassion. No one deserves this.

The interior of my Volvo wagon looks bigger. Being trapped in something like that under the vastness of the ocean is a pure nightmare; the thought induces nothing but dread. And for what? If you want to see the Titanic wreckage, there are plenty of videos that have been recorded that you can watch from the safety of your own home. R326, as I mentioned earlier, it's not a matter of running out of O2 and passing out peacefully. You'll be fighting carbon dioxide, which is extremely unpleasant. To get an idea, try breathing under the covers. You'll be gasping for breath after a minute or so. That's because even though there's still plenty of oxygen in your breath and the air beneath the covers, you body is triggered by the high concentration of CO2 to think you're drowning (which you are). It would not be peaceful.

I don't see the problem on rich people expending their money, at least it pass to others and it's not just in the bank. It's not like it was a submarine tour or donations to the red cross. When they die their money will divide too. Good

R459 I played Radio Days for my mother and when they got to the part about 'Polly' my mother immediately knew what that really came from. She remembered it and told me about it, I could feel from her how deeply that was felt, still remembering after so many years, so clearly and then they found out the little girl didn't make it. She cried watching that movie, said it perfectly captured those days. I sincerely hope these people are saved, I know it looks bad for them and I know if the ending is bad I will feel bad for them like mom and like everyone back then did about that poor little girl.

[quote] I just Googled the Mary Celeste to see if they ever found the wreck. They never did,
Another ship found her sailing in good condition but without a crew so took her as salvage and sailed her to Gibraltar. The Admiralty Court suspected the salvaging ship had murdered the missing crew but lacked proof.
The Dei Gratia received only one-sixth of the Mary Celesteās $46,000 insurance policy. Each Dei Gratia crewman walked away with around $830, adjusted for inflation.
The cargoā1,701 barrels of industrial alcoholāwas still there, save for nine barrels in the hold that were empty. One of the shipās pumps had been dismantled and there was a bit of flooding (about three and a half feet of seawater) in the cargo hold.
A six-month supply of food and water remained.
The log book was still there, with a final entry dated 8 a.m., November 25. It gave the Mary Celesteās position at the time, six miles northeast of Santa Maria, easternmost island of the Azoresāclose enough to see land.
Perhaps more noteworthy is what was missing. All the people were gone, of course. Captain Briggsā sextant, chronometer, and navigation book were all missing, as well as the shipās register. This suggested an orderly abandonment of the shipāBriggs had at least enough time to get below deck and collect his navigational equipment before hitting the lifeboat.
As for the Mary Celeste in November of 1884, she was sailed right into a reef just off the coast of Haiti; wrecked by a crooked captain who was trying to scam his insurance company. He was charged with fraud and died soon after.

CNN played up MH370 for MONTHS long after all hope was lost. They're going to do the exact same with this. This has all the makings of a great cable news ratings buster:
1. Countdown clock of oxygen. Check. 2. Billionaires in trouble where their money get them there and can't get them out. Check. 3. Corrupt corporation doing corporate things. Check. 4. A computer with a game control running the show. Check. 5. Military from multiple countries bleating "international cooperation". Check. 6. Banging noises bring unrealistic shards of hope. Check.
CNN is going to play this for months. They'll still be talking about it at both Canadian and American Thanksgiving.

Whoopi Goldberg provided an unexpected voice of calm and reason after her View co-host Joy Behar claimed 'incompetence, stupidity and hubris' were to blame for the Titan submersible disappearing.
Behar made the comments on Wednesday as the panel discussed the search for Titan, the tourist vessel that has been missing since Sunday morning with five people on board, including a 19-year-old.
As fellow host Sunny Hostin tried to explain why adventurers choose to take such risks, Joy was not having it.
'It's interesting because the Titanic itself that went down because of human incompetence and stupidity and hubris, and same with this,' Joy said, referring to the 1912 sinking of the ocean liner. 'That's the irony - they're going to see the same thing that happened to them. It's sad and scary.'
A seemingly uncomfortable Whoopi then gave her measured comments about the vessel fiasco.
'I'm just going to say a prayer for everybody,' the Oscar winner said. 'That's where I'm at with it. That's as far as I can go with this. We go from there. I don't need to compound it.'
Joy added that while she has a hard time understanding 'physical risks,' she has done other risky things like 'getting up in front of audiences drunk at 2 in the morning.'
'That's a risk that I took,' said the former stand-up comedian. 'You try doing what I do at 2 in the morning.'
Bizarrely, Behar went on to liken the disaster to driving the New Jersey turnpike at 2am, when she claimed the busy road was full of drunk drivers.

The odds look increasingly thin. While the French navy have sent their super duper deep sea robotic sub that could save our intrepid billionaires, any chance of success would rely heavily on the US and Canadian navies to have precisely located Titan when the French ship Atalante arrives on location. Which still isnāt the case. Basically Titan is fucked.

[quote]To clarify and expand upon yesterdayās statement, the University of Washingtonās Applied Physics Laboratory initially signed a $5 million research collaborative agreement with OceanGate, but only $650,000 worth of work was completed before the two organizations parted ways. That collaboration resulted in a steel-hulled vessel, named the Cyclops 1, that can travel to 500 meters depth, which is far shallower than the depths that OceanGateās TITAN submersible traveled to. As stated earlier, the Laboratory was not involved in the design, engineering or testing of the TITAN submersible used in the RMS TITANIC expedition.

A cheap Bluetooth controller with a 30 foot maximum range is not something I would consider reliable. Asking for trouble and they got it.

1m JUST IN: Submersible robot "Victor 6000" deployed in search for lost Titanic submarine, Titan.
Maximum depth - 6,000 meters

the 10,000 cash was their life savings nimrod. Most Americans have a house worth 10 to 50 times that amount. Not to mention cars 4 times that amount.

This is a nail-biter r565!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 567 | June 22, 2023 10:27 AM |
Of course the Rich people are going to get rescued at the last minute. What. The. Fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | June 22, 2023 10:39 AM |
Actually, I hope just the CEO survives so he ends up having to pay for the whole damn thing and goes to jail for the lives lost. No waiver is going to hold up in court with that 30 dollar play station remote thing for starters not to mention the warnings from other marine officials that what he was doing was unsafe and unregulated.

From CNN....Investor says the submersible "is designed to come back up" after 24 hours. um..Who is going to tell him it's been four days?
by Anonymous | reply 571 | June 22, 2023 10:45 AM |
Why are people hoping they're dead? They were stupid and reckless. They're not a bunch of paedophiles or serial killers (well, not as far as we know.)
by Anonymous | reply 572 | June 22, 2023 10:45 AM |
I bet the CEO was the cool-headed one, because he had dived several times before and it was his own contraption.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | June 22, 2023 10:46 AM |
^ and yet he had no contingency plan for something like this. So cool...
by Anonymous | reply 574 | June 22, 2023 10:49 AM |
They put a lot of other people in danger just looking for them. R572. I am sure resources were diverted from other rescues.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | June 22, 2023 10:51 AM |
4 days of poop and piss from 5 guys in a small air tight capsule. I am sure it was a lot of fun.
by Anonymous | reply 576 | June 22, 2023 10:53 AM |
Itās theater, people. Thereās no way humanly or robotically possible to retrieve an object of that size from the ocean floor at that depth.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | June 22, 2023 10:54 AM |
I know that, R575, and obviously they've caused a hell of a lot of trouble, but I still don't want them to die (although I think rescue is virtually impossible at this point).
by Anonymous | reply 578 | June 22, 2023 10:55 AM |
R577 how do you mean?
by Anonymous | reply 579 | June 22, 2023 10:55 AM |
Well a lot of people get their news exclusively from DL, R502.
by Anonymous | reply 580 | June 22, 2023 10:57 AM |
R577..I hope you are right. The truth is if a couple of them kicked off because of hypothermia that extends the oxygen for those left behind. IF they survive I will be heartbroken. I am just so invested in their doom. Can't I have anything?
by Anonymous | reply 581 | June 22, 2023 10:57 AM |
Times up now - sorry billionaires!

This is a MUST WATCH:
Here is the Frenchman, who seems to be a decent, intelligent, rather nice chap, earlier explaining to an interviewer what would happen if something went very wrong on the Titan: death by hypothermia. He notes that this is a "rather pleasant way to die."
He seems he would have been interesting to know. I hope he was right and that they died exactly the way he describes in this clip.

We need a new thread!!!
by Anonymous | reply 585 | June 22, 2023 10:58 AM |
More importantly, r584, he is a HOT DADDY!
by Anonymous | reply 586 | June 22, 2023 10:59 AM |
Death by hypothermia -- isn't that how a lot of Titanic passengers died?
by Anonymous | reply 587 | June 22, 2023 11:00 AM |
Will Dylan Mulvaney be "celebrating" the dead people with another make-up ad?
by Anonymous | reply 589 | June 22, 2023 11:02 AM |
Down to the final hour per GMA....tick, tock...
by Anonymous | reply 590 | June 22, 2023 11:03 AM |
I don't get the DL love for the Frenchman.
IMO, the CEO is the conventionally attractive one. A true silver fox.

Wonder if the search will continue, even after the window of time for oxygen has lapsed?
by Anonymous | reply 593 | June 22, 2023 11:08 AM |
yes, it will be to recover the bodies.
by Anonymous | reply 594 | June 22, 2023 11:09 AM |
Why don't they have a burial at sea?
by Anonymous | reply 595 | June 22, 2023 11:10 AM |
I hear that hypothermia creates a paradoxical sensation of heat which causes people to undress. Maybe their final moments will be naked with that hot French daddy. There are far worse ways to die.
by Anonymous | reply 596 | June 22, 2023 11:12 AM |
how many hours/oxygen left?
by Anonymous | reply 597 | June 22, 2023 11:17 AM |
I wonder if any of the survivors did the Luke Skywalker sleeping bag thing with the deceased.
